Fluorinated Nanosized Zeolitic-Imidazolate Frameworks as Potential Devices for Mechanical Energy Storage

Fluorination is one of the most efficient and universal strategies to increase the hydrophobicity of materials and consequently their water stability. Zeolitic-imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs), which have limited stability in aqueous media and even lower stability when synthesized on a nanometric scale, can greatly benefit from the incorporation of fluorine atoms, not only to improve their stability but also to provide additional properties. Herein, we report the preparation of two different fluorinated ZIFs through a simple and scalable approach by using mixed ligands [2-methylimidazole, as a common ligand, and 4-(4-fluorophenyl)-1H-imidazole (monofluorinated linker) or 2-methyl-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-imidazole (trifluorinated linker) as a dopant], demonstrating the high versatility of the synthetic method developed to incorporate different fluorine-containing imidazole-based ligands. Second, we demonstrate for the first time that these nanoscale fluorinated ZIFs outperform the pristine ZIF-8 for water intrusion/extrusion, i.e., for storing mechanical energy via forced intrusion of nonwetting water due to the improved hydrophobicity and modified framework dynamics. Moreover, we also show that by varying the nature of the F-imidazole ligand, the performance of the resulting ZIFs, including the pressure thresholds and stored/dissipated energy, can be finely tuned, thus opening the path for the design of a library of fluorine-modified ZIFs with unique behavior.

Highly sensitive and highly selective lead ion electrochemical sensor based on zn/cu-btc-nh2 bimetallic MOFs with nano-reticulated reinforcing microstructure

Identifying ultra-trace amounts of divalent lead ions (Pb2+) with high response and selectivity, continues to be a pressing issue in identifying environmental pollutants and preventing health complications. This paper details how the in-situ electrodeposited Zn/Cu-BTC-NH2 metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) boosts Pb2+ concentration for amino adsorption and facilitates ion transfer between Cu element and Pb2+. The modified coating of the glassy carbon electrode (GCE) exhibits a unique nano-reticulated structure loaded with octahedron particles, the nano-reticulated structure ensures the structural strength of the modified electrode layer, while the loaded octahedral particles enhancing electrocatalytic activity. The ultra-trace detection of Pb2+ at concentrations below μg·L-1 is accomplished by using the square wave anodic stripping voltammetry (SWASV) method, the fabricated Zn/Cu-BTC-NH2 modified electrode signifies a detection threshold of 0.021 μg L-1 and a clearly ascending linear interval prior to the rise in Pb2+ concentration to 120 μg L-1. The reported electrochemical method for the precise identification of Pb2+ in water-based solutions offers a practical approach for modifying MOFs materials and detecting heavy metal ions.

Spatially Confined π-Complexation within Pore-Space-Partitioned Metal-Organic Frameworks for Enhanced Light Hydrocarbon Separation and Purification

Ultramicroporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are demonstrated to be advantageous for the separation and purification of light hydrocarbons such as C2H2, C2H4, and CH4. The introduction of transition metal sites with strong π-complexation affinity into MOFs is more effective than other adsorption sites for the selective adsorption of π-electron-rich unsaturated hydrocarbon gases from their mixtures. However, lower coordination numbers make it challenging to produce robust MOFs directly utilizing metal ions with π-coordination activity, such as Cu+, Ag+, and Pd2+. Herein, a series of novel π-complexing MOFs (SNNU-33s) with a pore size of 4.6 Å are precisely constructed by cleverly introducing symmetrically matched C3-type [Cu(pyz)3] (pyz = pyrazine) coordinated fragments into 1D hexagonal channels of MIL-88 prototype frameworks. Benifit from the spatial confinement combined with π-complex-active Cu+ of [Cu(pyz)3], pore-space-partitioned SNNU-33 MOFs all present excellent C2H2/CH4, C2H4/CH4, and CO2/CH4 separation ability. Notably, the optimized SNNU-33b adsorbent demonstrates top-level IAST selectivity values for C2H2/CH4 (597.4) and C2H4/CH4 (69.8), as well as excellent breakthrough performance. Theoretical calculations further reveal that such benchmark light hydrocarbon separation and purification ability is mainly ascribed to the extra-strong binding affinity between Cu+ and π-electron donor molecules via a spatially confined π-complexation process.

Zirconium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks with Free Hydroxy Groups for Enhanced Perfluorooctanoic Acid Uptake in Water

Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a highly recalcitrant organic pollutant, and its bioaccumulation severely endangers human health. While various methods are developed for PFOA removal, the targeted design of adsorbents with high efficiency and reusability remains largely unexplored. Here the rational design and synthesis of two novel zirconium-based metal‒organic frameworks (MOFs) bearing free ortho-hydroxy sites, namely noninterpenetrated PCN-1001 and twofold interpenetrated PCN-1002, are presented. Single crystal analysis of the pure ligand reveals that intramolecular hydrogen bonding plays a pivotal role in directing the formation of MOFs with free hydroxy groups. Furthermore, the transformation from PCN-1001 to PCN-1002 is realized. Compared to PCN-1001, PCN-1002 displays higher chemical stability due to interpenetration, thereby demonstrating an exceptional PFOA adsorption capacity of up to 632 mg g-1 (1.53 mmol g-1), which is comparable to the reported record values. Moreover, PCN-1002 shows rapid kinetics, high selectivity, and long-life cycles in PFOA removal tests. Solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance results and density functional theory calculations reveal that multiple hydrogen bonds between the free ortho-hydroxy sites and PFOA, along with Lewis acid-base interaction, work collaboratively to enhance PFOA adsorption.

Atomically Contacted Cs3Bi2Br9 QDs@UiO-66 Composite for Photocatalytic CO2 Reduction

Metal halide perovskite quantum dots (QDs) are widely studied in the field of photocatalytic CO2 due to their strong light absorption and long carrier migration length. However, it can not exhibit high catalytic performance because of the radiative recombination and the lack of effective catalytic sites. Metal organic frameworks (MOFs) encapsulated QDs can not only solve the aforementioned problems, but also maintain their own unique characteristics with ultra-high specific surfaces area and abundant metal sites. In this work, lead-free bismuth-based halide perovskite QDs are encapsulated into Zr-based MOF (UiO-66), which combines the advantages with high power conversion efficiency of QDs and the high surface area and porosity of UiO-66. In addition, benefiting from the close contact between the Cs3Bi2Br9 QDs and the UiO-66 enables the photogenerated electrons in the QDs to be rapidly transferred to the MOF. As a result, the Cs3Bi2Br9@UiO-66 composite exhibits a higher yield for photocatalytic CO2 reduction than that of the prepared large-sized composite of Cs3Bi2Br9 and UiO-66.

Defect-Engineered Metal-Organic Framework/Polyimide Mixed Matrix Membrane for CO2 Separation

Defect-engineered metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with outstanding structural and chemical features have become excellent candidates for specific separation applications. The introduction of structural defects in MOFs as an efficient approach to manipulate their functionality provides excellent opportunities for the preparation of MOF-based mixed matrix membranes (MMMs). However, the use of this strategy to adjust the properties and develop the separation performance of gas separation membranes is still in its early stages. Here, a novel defect-engineered MOF (quasi ZrFum or Q-ZrFum) was synthesized via a controlled thermal deligandation process and incorporated into a CO2-philic 6FDA-durene polyimide (PI) matrix to form Q-ZrFum loaded MMMs. Defect-engineered MOFs and fabricated MMMs were investigated regarding their characteristic properties and separation performance. The incorporation of defects into the MOF structure increases the pore size and provides unsaturated active metal sites that positively affect CO2 molecule transport. The interfacial compatibility between the Q-ZrFum particles and the PI matrix increases via the deligandation process, which improves the mechanical strength of Q-ZrFum loaded membranes. MMM containing 5 wt.% of defect-engineered Q-ZrFum exhibits excellent CO2 permeability of 1308 Barrer, which increased by 99 % compared to the pure PI membrane (656 Barrer) at a feed pressure of 2 bar. CO2/CH4 and CO2/N2 selectivity reached 44 and 26.6 which increased by about 70 and 16 %, respectively. This study emphasizes that defect-engineered MOFs can be promising candidates for use as fillers in the preparation of MMMs for the future development of membrane-based gas separation applications.

Hierarchical porous amorphous metal-organic frameworks constructed from ZnO/MOF glass composites

For the first time, hierarchical porous amorphous metal-organic frameworks (HP-aMOFs) containing ultramicropores, micropores, and mesopores were synthesized by etching a composite of MOF glass (agZIF-76) and ZnO using ammonia. These materials show potential applications in the adsorption of C2 hydrocarbons.

Functionalisation of MUF-15 enhances CO2/CH4 selectivity in mixed-matrix membranes

MUF-15 (MUF = Massey University Framework) is a metal-organic framework with pores that can be tuned by ligand functionalisation. Crystallites of MUF-15 and derivatives were blended with the organic polymer 6FDA-DAM to produce mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs). At a loading of 30 wt%, membranes with MUF-15-F, MUF-15 with an appended fluoro group, exhibited a CO2 permeability of 1300 Barrer and CO2/CH4 selectivity of 37.1. These values surpass membranes with the parent MUF-15 and exceed the Robeson upper bound.

Metal-organic framework (MOF)/C-dots and covalent organic framework (COF)/C-dots hybrid nanocomposites: Fabrications and applications in sensing, medical, environmental, and energy sectors

Developing new hybrid materials is critical for addressing the current needs of the world in various fields, such as energy, sensing, health, hygiene, and others. C-dots are a member of the carbon nanomaterial family with numerous applications. Aggregation is one of the barriers to the performance of C-dots, which causes luminescence quenching, surface area decreases, etc. To improve the performance of C-dots, numerous matrices including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent-organic frameworks (COFs), and polymers have been composited with C-dots. The porous crystalline structures, which are constituents of metal nodes and organic linkers (MOFs) or covalently attached organic units (COFs) provide privileged features such as high specific surface area, tunable structures, and pore diameters, modifiable surface, high thermal, mechanical, and chemical stabilities. Also, the MOFs and COFs protect the C-dots from the environment. Therefore, MOF/C-dots and COF/C-dots composites combine their features while retaining topological properties and improving performances. In this review, we first compare MOFs with COFs as matrices for C-dots. Then, the recent progress in developing hybrid MOFs/C-dots and COFs/C-dots composites has been discussed and their applications in various fields have been explained briefly.

Metal-Organic Framework Based Sensors for Benzene Vapor

Sensing of benzene vapor is a hot spot due to the volatile drastic carcinogen even at trace concentration. However, achieving convenient and rapid detection is still a challenge. As a sort of functional porous material, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have been developed as detection sensors by adsorbing benzene vapor and converting it into other signals (fluorescence intensity/wavelength, chemiresistive, weight or color, etc.). Supramolecular interaction between benzene molecules and the host framework, aperture size/shape and structural flexibility are influential factors in the performance of MOF-based sensors. Therefore, enhancing the host-guest interactions between the host framework and benzene molecules, or regulating the diffusion rate of benzene molecules by changing the aperture size/shape and flexibility of the host framework to enhance the detection signal are effective strategies for constructing MOF-based sensors. This concept highlights several types of MOF-based sensors for the detection of benzene vapor.

Discovery of two predictable (3,18)-connected topologies based on Wells-Dawson type cages for the design of porous metal phosphonocarboxylate frameworks

Highly connected molecular building blocks (MBBs) have been demonstrated to play a crucial role in reticular chemistry, particularly in predicting the topologies of metal-organic frameworks. Metal phosphonate clusters exhibit considerable advantages in constructing high-connectivity MBBs, owing to the multiple coordination modes offered by phosphonic ligands. Herein, four metal (M = CoII, MnII) phosphonocarboxylate frameworks (CoPCF-1,2 and MnPCF-1,2) were successfully prepared under solvothermal conditions by utilizing the phosphonocarboxylic ligand, 4'-phosphonobiphenyl-3,5-dicarboxylic acid (H4pbpdc), and their structural characterization was performed using single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD). The structures feature a duodenary nuclear M12(µ3-OH)2(CO2)12(PO3)6(DMF)6/(CH3COO)4.5 cluster, bearing resemblance to the well-known Wells-Dawson ion from polyoxometallate chemistry. It is the first time a Wells-Dawson type cage has served as an 18-connected molecular building block, forming two kinds of porous metal phosphonocarboxylate frameworks with novel (3,18)-connected gez and gea topologies. Their permanent porosities were confirmed through N2 adsorption studies. Notably, the MBB Co12 cluster-based CoPCF-1 shows a loss and recovery process of µ3-OH through single-crystal-to-single-crystal (SCSC) transformation. The magnetic properties of the four compounds exhibit antiferromagnetic behavior.

A Highly Stable Microporous Calcium-Based MOF for C2H2/CO2 Separation with Low Regenerative Energy

Most of the porous materials used for acetylene/carbon dioxide separation have the problems of poor stability and high energy requirements for regeneration, which significantly hinder their practical application in industries. Here, we report a novel calcium-based metal-organic framework (NKM-123) with excellent chemical stability against water, acids, and bases. Additionally, it has exceptional thermal stability, retaining its structural integrity at temperatures up to 300 °C. This material exhibits promising potential for separating C2H2 and CO2 gases. Furthermore, it demonstrates an adsorption heat of 29.3 kJ mol-1 for C2H2, which is lower than that observed in the majority of MOFs used for C2H2/CO2 separations. The preferential adsorption of C2H2 over that of CO2 is confirmed by dispersion-corrected density functional theory (DFT-D) calculations. In addition, the potential of industrial feasibility of NKM-123 for C2H2/CO2 separation is confirmed by transient breakthrough tests. The robust cycle performance and structural stability of NKM-123 during multiple breakthrough tests show great potential in the industrial separation of light hydrocarbons.

Heteroatom-Doped Ag25 Nanoclusters Encapsulated in Metal-Organic Frameworks for Photocatalytic Hydrogen Production

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters (NCs) with unique optical properties and abundant catalytic sites are promising in photocatalysis. However, their light-induced instability and the difficulty of utilizing the photogenerated carriers for photocatalysis pose significant challenges. Here, MAg24 (M=Ag, Pd, Pt, and Au) NCs doped with diverse single heteroatoms have been encapsulated in a metal-organic framework (MOF), UiO-66-NH2, affording MAg24@UiO-66-NH2. Strikingly, compared with Ag25@UiO-66-NH2, the MAg24@UiO-66-NH2 doped with heteroatom exhibits much enhanced activity in photocatalytic hydrogen production, among which AuAg24@UiO-66-NH2 presents the best activity up to 3.6 mmol g-1 h-1, far superior to all other counterparts. Moreover, they display excellent photocatalytic recyclability and stability. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and ultrafast transient absorption spectroscopy demonstrate that MAg24 NCs encapsulated into the MOF create a favorable charge transfer pathway, similar to a Z-scheme heterojunction, when exposed to visible light. This promotes charge separation, along with optimized Ag electronic state, which are responsible for the superior activity in photocatalytic hydrogen production.

Trace SO2 capture within the engineered pore space using a highly stable SnF62--pillared MOF

Developing reliable solid sorbents for efficient capture and removal of trace sulfur dioxide (SO2) under ambient conditions is critical for industrial desulfurization operations, but poses a great challenge. Herein, we focus on SNFSIX-Cu-TPA, a highly stable fluorinated MOF that utilizes SnF62- as pillars, for effectively capturing SO2 at extremely low pressures. The exceptional affinity of SNFSIX-Cu-TPA towards SO2 over CO2 and N2 was demonstrated through single-component isotherms and corroborated by computational simulations. At 298 K and 0.002 bar, this material displays a remarkable gas uptake of 2.22 mmol g-1. Among various anion fluorinated MOFs, SNFSIX-Cu-TPA shows the highest SO2/MF62- of 1.39 mmol mmol-1 and exhibits a low Qst of 58.81 kJ mol-1. Additionally, SNFSIX-Cu-TPA displays excellent potential for SO2/CO2 separation, as evidenced by its ideal adsorbed solution theory (IAST) selectivity of 148 at a molar fraction of SO2 of 0.01. Dynamic breakthrough curves were obtained to reveal the effective removal of trace SO2 from simulated flue gas (SO2/CO2/N2; v/v/v 0.2/10/89.8) with a high dynamic capacity of up to 1.52 mmol g-1. Furthermore, in situ TGA demonstrated the efficient and reversible capture of 500 ppm SO2 over 20 adsorption-desorption tests. This durable material presents a rare combination of exceptional SO2 capturing performance, good adsorption selectivity, and mild regeneration, thus making it a good candidate for a realistic desulfurization process.

Fluorinated MOF-Based Hexafluoropropylene Nanotrap for Highly Efficient Purification of Octafluoropropane Electronic Specialty Gas

High-purity octafluoropropane (C3F8) electronic specialty gas is a key chemical raw material in semiconductor and integrated circuit manufacturing industry, while selective removal of hexafluoropropylene (C3F6) impurity for C3F8 purification is essential but a challenging task. Here we report a fluorinated cage-like MOF Zn-bzc-CF3 (bzc=5-(trifluoromethyl)-1H-pyrazole-4-carboxylic acid) for C3F6/C3F8 separation. The incorporation of -CF3 groups not only provides suitable pore aperture size for highly efficient size-exclusive C3F6/C3F8 separation, but also creates hydrophobic microenvironments, endowing Zn-bz-CF3 high chemical stability. Remarkably, Zn-bzc-CF3 exhibits high C3F6 adsorption capacity while excluding C3F8, achieving ideal molecular-sieving C3F6/C3F8 separation. Breakthrough experiments show that Zn-bzc-CF3 can efficiently separate C3F6/C3F8 mixture and high-purity C3F8 (99.9 %) can be obtained.

Isoreticular Contraction of Cage-like Metal-Organic Frameworks with Optimized Pore Space for Enhanced C2H2/CO2 and C2H2/C2H4 Separations

The C2H2 separation from CO2 and C2H4 is of great importance yet highly challenging in the petrochemical industry, owing to their similar physical and chemical properties. Herein, the pore nanospace engineering of cage-like mixed-ligand MFOF-1 has been accomplished via contracting the size of the pyridine- and carboxylic acid-functionalized linkers and introducing a fluoride- and sulfate-bridging cobalt cluster, based on a reticular chemistry strategy. Compared with the prototypical MFOF-1, the constructed FJUT-1 with the same topology presents significantly improved C2H2 adsorption capacity, and selective C2H2 separation performance due to the reduced cage cavity size, functionalized pore surface, and appropriate pore volume. The introduction of fluoride- and sulfate-bridging cubane-type tetranuclear cobalt clusters bestows FJUT-1 with exceptional chemical stability under harsh conditions while providing multiple potential C2H2 binding sites, thus rendering the adequate ability for practical C2H2 separation application as confirmed by the dynamic breakthrough experiments under dry and humid conditions. Additionally, the distinct binding mechanism is suggested by theoretical calculations in which the multiple supramolecular interactions involving C-H···O, C-H···F, and other van der Waals forces play a critical role in the selective C2H2 separation.

Hierarchically Structured Metal-Organic Framework Polymer Composites for Chemical Warfare Agent Degradation

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have captured the imagination of researchers for their highly tunable properties and many potential applications, including as catalysts for a variety of transformations. Even though MOFs possess significant potential, the challenges associated with processing of these crystalline powders into usable form factors while retaining their functional properties limit their end use applications. Herein, we introduce a new approach to construct MOF-polymer composites via 3D photoprinting to overcome these limitations. We designed photoresin composite formulations that use polymerization-induced phase separation to cause the MOF catalysts to migrate to the surface of the printed material, where they are accessible to substrates such as chemical warfare agents. Using our approach, MOF-polymer composites can be fabricated into nearly any shape or architecture while retaining both the excellent catalytic activity at 10 wt % loading of the MOF components and the flexible, elastomeric mechanical properties of a polymer.

Non-CO2 greenhouse gas separation using advanced porous materials

Global warming has become a growing concern over decades, prompting numerous research endeavours to reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) emission, the major greenhouse gas (GHG). However, the contribution of other non-CO2 GHGs including methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N2O), fluorocarbons, perfluorinated gases, etc. should not be overlooked, due to their high global warming potential and environmental hazards. In order to reduce the emission of non-CO2 GHGs, advanced separation technologies with high efficiency and low energy consumption such as adsorptive separation or membrane separation are highly desirable. Advanced porous materials (APMs) including metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), covalent organic frameworks (COFs), hydrogen-bonded organic frameworks (HOFs), porous organic polymers (POPs), etc. have been developed to boost the adsorptive and membrane separation, due to their tunable pore structure and surface functionality. This review summarizes the progress of APM adsorbents and membranes for non-CO2 GHG separation. The material design and fabrication strategies, along with the molecular-level separation mechanisms are discussed. Besides, the state-of-the-art separation performance and challenges of various APM materials towards each type of non-CO2 GHG are analyzed, offering insightful guidance for future research. Moreover, practical industrial challenges and opportunities from the aspect of engineering are also discussed, to facilitate the industrial implementation of APMs for non-CO2 GHG separation.

Crystalline Dual-Porous Covalent Triazine Frameworks as a New Platform for Efficient Electrocatalysis

Crystalline covalent triazine frameworks (CTFs) have gained considerable interest in energy and catalysis owing to their well-defined nitrogen-rich π-conjugated porosity and superior physicochemical properties, however, suffer from very limited molecular structures. Herein we report a novel solvent-free FeCl3 -catalyzed polymerization of 2, 6-pyridinedicarbonitrile (DCP) to achieve the first synthesis of crystalline, dual-porous, pyridine-based CTF (Fe-CTF). The FeCl3 could not only act as a highly active Lewis acid catalyst for promoting the two-dimensional ordered polymerization of DCP monomers, but also in situ coordinate with the tridentate chelators generated between pyridine and triazine groups to yield unique Fe-N3 single-atom active sites in Fe-CTF. Abundant few-layer crystalline nanosheets (Fe-CTF NSs) could be prepared through simple ball-milling exfoliation of the bulk layered Fe-CTF and exhibited remarkable electrocatalytic performance for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with a half-wave potential and onset potential up to 0.902 and 1.02 V respectively, and extraordinary Zn-air battery performance with an ultrahigh specific capacity and power density of 811 mAh g-1 and 230 mW cm-2 respectively. By combining operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy with density functional theory calculations, we revealed a dynamic and reversible evolution of Fe-N3 to Fe-N2 during the electrocatalytic process, which could further accelerate the electrocatalytic reaction.

Modular Customization and Regulation of Metal-Organic Frameworks for Efficient Membrane Separations

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are considered ideal membrane candidates for energy-efficient separations. However, the MOF membrane amount to date is only a drop in the bucket compared to the material collections. The fabrication of an arbitrary MOF membrane exhibiting inherent separation capacity of the material remains a long-standing challenge. Herein, we report a MOF modular customization strategy by employing four MOFs with diverse structures and physicochemical properties and achieving innovative defect-free membranes for efficient separation validation. Each membrane fully displays the separation potential according to the MOF pore/channel microenvironment, and consequently, an intriguing H2 /CO2 separation performance sequence is achieved (separation factor of 1656-5.4, H2 permeance of 964-2745 gas permeation unit). Taking advantage of this strategy, separation performance can be manipulated by a non-destructive modification separately towards the MOF module. This work establishes a universal full-chain demonstration for membrane fabrication-separation validation-microstructure modification and opens an avenue for exclusive customization of membranes for important separations.

Selectivity Control in the Direct CO Esterification over Pd@UiO-66: The Pd Location Matters

The selectivity control of Pd nanoparticles (NPs) in the direct CO esterification with methyl nitrite toward dimethyl oxalate (DMO) or dimethyl carbonate (DMC) remains a grand challenge. Herein, Pd NPs are incorporated into isoreticular metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), namely UiO-66-X (X=-H, -NO2 , -NH2 ), affording Pd@UiO-66-X, which unexpectedly exhibit high selectivity (up to 99 %) to DMC and regulated activity in the direct CO esterification. In sharp contrast, the Pd NPs supported on the MOF, yielding Pd/UiO-66, displays high selectivity (89 %) to DMO as always reported with Pd NPs. Both experimental and DFT calculation results prove that the Pd location relative to UiO-66 gives rise to discriminated microenvironment of different amounts of interface between Zr-oxo clusters and Pd NPs in Pd@UiO-66 and Pd/UiO-66, resulting in their distinctly different selectivity. This is an unprecedented finding on the production of DMC by Pd NPs, which was previously achieved by Pd(II) only, in the direct CO esterification.

A general large-scale synthesis approach for crystalline porous materials

Crystalline porous materials such as covalent organic frameworks (COFs), metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and porous organic cages (POCs) have been widely applied in various fields with outstanding performances. However, the lack of general and effective methodology for large-scale production limits their further industrial applications. In this work, we developed a general approach comprising high pressure homogenization (HPH), which can realize large-scale synthesis of crystalline porous materials including COFs, MOFs, and POCs under benign conditions. This universal strategy, as illustrated in the proof of principle studies, has prepared 4 COFs, 4 MOFs, and 2 POCs. It can circumvent some drawbacks of existing approaches including low yield, high energy consumption, low efficiency, weak mass/thermal transfer, tedious procedures, poor reproducibility, and high cost. On the basis of this approach, an industrial homogenizer can produce 0.96 ~ 580.48 ton of high-performance COFs, MOFs, and POCs per day, which is unachievable via other methods.

Stepwise construction of multi-component metal-organic frameworks

Multi-component metal-organic frameworks (MC-MOFs) are crystalline porous materials containing multiple organic ligands or mixed metals, which manifest new properties beyond the linear combination of the single component. However, the traditional one-pot synthesis method for MOFs is not always applicable for synthesizing MC-MOFs due to the competitive coordination of multiple ligands and metals. Therefore, the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs has been explored, which enables more precise control of the heterogeneity within the ordered MC-MOFs. This review provides a summary of the synthesis strategies, namely, ligand exchange, coordinative modification, covalent modification, ligand metalation, cluster metalation, and use of mixed-metal precursors, for the stepwise construction of MC-MOFs. Furthermore, we discuss the applications of MC-MOFs with ordered arrangements of multiple functionalities, focusing on gas adsorption and separation, water remediation, heterogeneous catalysis, luminescence, and chemical sensing.

Kilogram-Scale Fabrication of a Robust Olefin-Linked Covalent Organic Framework for Separating Ethylene from a Ternary C2 Hydrocarbon Mixture

One-step adsorptive purification of ethylene (C2H4) from a ternary mixture of acetylene (C2H2), C2H4, and ethane (C2H6) by a single material is of great importance but challenging in the petrochemical industry. Herein, a chemically robust olefin-linked covalent organic framework (COF), NKCOF-62, is designed and synthesized by a melt polymerization method employing tetramethylpyrazine and terephthalaldehyde as cheap monomers. This method avoids most of the disadvantages of classical solvothermal methods, which enable the cost-effective kilogram fabrication of olefin-linked COFs in one pot. Furthermore, NKCOF-62 shows remarkably selective adsorption of C2H2 and C2H6 over C2H4 thanks to its unique pore environments and suitable pore size. Breakthrough experiments demonstrate that polymer-grade C2H4 can be directly obtained from C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 (1/1/1) ternary mixtures through a single separation process. Notably, NKCOF-62 is the first demonstration of the potential to use COFs for C2H2/C2H6/C2H4 separation, which provides a blueprint for the design and construction of robust COFs for industrial gas separations.

Recent advances in the chemistry and applications of fluorinated metal-organic frameworks (F-MOFs)

Metal-organic frameworks are a class of porous crystalline materials based on the ordered connection of metal centers or metal clusters by organic linkers with comprehensive functionalities. The interest in these materials is rapidly moving towards their application in industry and real life. In this context, cheap and sustainable synthetic strategies of MOFs with tailored structures and functions are nowadays a topic widely studied from different points of view. In this review, fluorinated MOFs (F-MOFs) and their applications are investigated. The principal aim is to provide an overview of the structural features and the main application of MOFs containing fluorine atoms both as anionic units or as coordinating elements of more complex inorganic units and, therefore, directly linked to the structural metals or as part of fluorinated linkers used in the synthesis of MOFs. Herein we present a review of F-MOFs reported in the recent literature compared to benchmark compounds published over the last 10 years. The compounds are discussed in terms of their structure and properties according to the aforementioned classification, with an insight into the different chemical nature of the bonds. The application fields of F-MOFs, especially in sustainability related issues, such as harmful gas sorption and separation, will also be discussed. F-MOFs are compounds containing fluorine atoms in their framework and they can be based on: (a) fluorinated metallic or semi-metallic anionic clusters or: (b) fluorinated organic linkers or (c) eventually containing both the building blocks. The nature of a covalent C-F bond in terms of length, charge separation and dipole moment sensibly differs from that of a partly ionic M-F (M = metal) one so that the two classes of materials (points a and b) have different properties and they find various application fields. The study shows how the insertion of polar M-F and C-F bonds in the MOF structure may confer several advantages in terms of interaction with gaseous molecules and the compounds can find application in gas sorption and separation. In addition, hydrophobicity tends to increase compared to non-fluorinated analogues, resulting in an overall improvement in moisture stability.

Electrochemical or Photoelectrochemical Alkenylpolyfluoroalkylation of 3-Aza-1,5-dienes: Regioselective Entry to Polyfluoroalkylated 4-Pyrrolin-2-ones

An electrochemical or photoelectrochemical regioselective polyfluoroalkylation/cyclization cascade of 3-aza-1,5-dienes with sodium fluoroalkanesulfinates is presented. This protocol proceeds with a broad substrate scope and good functional group tolerance under mild, oxidant-free, transition-metal-free, and electrolyte-free conditions to provide 3-polyfluoroalkylated 4-pyrrolin-2-ones in one step from readily available N-vinylacrylamides, and it is readily scalable to the Gram scale.

Highly Efficient CO2 Capture from Wet-Hot Flue Gas by a Robust Trap-and-Flow Crystal

Highly selective CO2 capture from flue gas based on adsorption technology is among the largest challenge on the horizon, due to its high temperature (>333 K), lower partial pressure (0.1-0.2 bar), and competition from water. Due to the designable and tunable pore system, porous coordination polymers (PCPs) have been considered as the most exciting discoveries in porous materials. However, the rational design and function-led preparation of the pore system that permits highly selective CO2 capture from flue gas (CO2/N2/O2/CO/H2O) remains a great challenge. Herein, we report a highly selective CO2 capture from wet-hot (363 K, RH = 40%) flue gas by a robust trap-and-flow crystal (NTU-67). Crystallographic analysis showed that the flow channel provides plausible CO2 traffic, while the confined trap works as an accommodation for captured gas molecules. Further, the hydrophobic pore surface endows the function of the channels that are not influenced by hot moisture, a major obstacle to overcome direct CO2 capture by PCPs. The integral nature of NTU-67, including good stability in SO2, meets the key prerequisites that are usually considered for practical applications. The molecular insight and highly efficient CO2 capture make us believe that different nanospace with their own duties may be extended into ingenious design of more advanced adsorbents for cost-effective and promising for CO2 capture from flue gas.

Pore Space Partitioning MIL-88(Co): Developing Robust Adsorbents for CO2/CH4 Separation Featured with High CO2 Adsorption and Rapid Desorption

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have attracted significant attention as sorbents for gas separation and purification. Ideally, an industrially potential adsorbent should combine exceptional gas uptake, excellent stability, and a lower regeneration energy; however, it remains a great challenge. Here, by utilizing the pore space partition (PSP) strategy, we develop three isostructural MOF materials (Co-BDC-TPB, Co-DCBDC-TPB, and Co-DOBDC-TPB) based on pristine MIL-88(Co). The three pore-space-partitioned crystalline microporous MOFs have triangular bipyramid cages and segmented one-dimensional channels, and among them, Co-DOBDC-TPB exhibits the highest CO2 uptake capacity (4.35 mmol g-1) and good CO2/N2 (29.7) and CO2/CH4 (6.2) selectivity. The selectivity-capacity synergy endows it with excellent CO2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separation performance. Moreover, Co-DOBDC-TPB can complete desorption within 10 min. The satisfactory CO2 adsorption ability can be attributed to both microporous aperture arising from PSP and modification of the pore surface by the polar hydroxy group, which enhances the interaction between Co-DOBDC-TPB and CO2 molecules significantly. The exceptional regeneration property may be due to its lower CO2 isosteric heat of adsorption (23.6 kJ/mol). The developed pore-space-partitioned MIL-88(Co) material Co-DOBDC-TPB may have potential application to flue gas and natural gas purification.

Tetrahedral Imidazolate Frameworks with Auxiliary Ligands (TIF-Ax): Synthetic Strategies and Applications

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) are an important subclass of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Recently, we reported a new kind of MOF, namely tetrahedral imidazolate frameworks with auxiliary ligands (TIF-Ax), by adding linear ligands (Hint) into the zinc-imidazolate system. Introducing linear ligands into the M2+-imidazolate system overcomes the limitation of imidazole derivatives. Thanks to the synergistic effect of two different types of ligands, a series of new TIF-Ax with interesting topologies and a special pore environment has been reported, and they have attracted extensive attention in gas adsorption, separation, catalysis, heavy metal ion capture, and so on. In this review, we give a comprehensive overview of TIF-Ax, including their synthesis methods, structural diversity, and multi-field applications. Finally, we also discuss the challenges and perspectives of the rational design and syntheses of new TIF-Ax from the aspects of their composition, solvent, and template. This review provides deep insight into TIF-Ax and a reference for scholars with backgrounds of porous materials, gas separation, and catalysis.

Temperature-dependent rearrangement of gas molecules in ultramicroporous materials for tunable adsorption of CO2 and C2H2

The interactions between adsorbed gas molecules within porous metal-organic frameworks are crucial to gas selectivity but remain poorly explored. Here, we report the modulation of packing geometries of CO₂ and C₂H₂ clusters within the ultramicroporous CUK-1 material as a function of temperature. In-situ synchrotron X-ray diffraction reveals a unique temperature-dependent reversal of CO₂ and C₂H₂ adsorption affinities on CUK-1, which is validated by gas sorption and dynamic breakthrough experiments, affording high-purity C₂H₂ (99.95%) from the equimolar mixture of C₂H₂/CO₂ via a one-step purification process. At low temperatures (<253 K), CUK-1 preferentially adsorbs CO₂ with both high selectivity (>10) and capacity (170 cm³ g^-1) owing to the formation of CO₂ tetramers that simultaneously maximize the guest-guest and host-guest interactions. At room temperature, conventionally selective adsorption of C₂H₂ is observed. The selectivity reversal, structural robustness, and facile regeneration of CUK-1 suggest its potential for producing high-purity C₂H₂ by temperature-swing sorption.

Highly Productive C3H4/C3H6 Trace Separation by a Packing Polymorph of a Layered Hybrid Ultramicroporous Material

Ultramicroporous materials can be highly effective at trace gas separations when they offer a high density of selective binding sites. Herein, we report that sql-NbOFFIVE-bpe-Cu, a new variant of a previously reported ultramicroporous square lattice, sql, topology material, sql-SIFSIX-bpe-Zn, can exist in two polymorphs. These polymorphs, sql-NbOFFIVE-bpe-Cu-AA (AA) and sql-NbOFFIVE-bpe-Cu-AB (AB), exhibit AAAA and ABAB packing of the sql layers, respectively. Whereas NbOFFIVE-bpe-Cu-AA (AA) is isostructural with sql-SIFSIX-bpe-Zn, each exhibiting intrinsic 1D channels, sql-NbOFFIVE-bpe-Cu-AB (AB) has two types of channels, the intrinsic channels and extrinsic channels between the sql networks. Gas and temperature induced transformations of the two polymorphs of sql-NbOFFIVE-bpe-Cu were investigated by pure gas sorption, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD), variable temperature powder X-ray diffraction (VT-PXRD), and synchrotron PXRD. We observed that the extrinsic pore structure of AB resulted in properties with potential for selective C₃H₄/C₃H₆ separation. Subsequent dynamic gas breakthrough measurements revealed exceptional experimental C₃H₄/C₃H₆ selectivity (270) and a new benchmark for productivity (118 mmol g^-1) of polymer grade C₃H₆ (purity >99.99%) from a 1:99 C₃H₄/C₃H₆ mixture. Structural analysis, gas sorption studies, and gas adsorption kinetics enabled us to determine that a binding "sweet spot" for C₃H₄ in the extrinsic pores is behind the benchmark separation performance. Density-functional theory (DFT) calculations and Canonical Monte Carlo (CMC) simulations provided further insight into the binding sites of C₃H₄ and C₃H₆ molecules within these two hybrid ultramicroporous materials, HUMs. These results highlight, to our knowledge for the first time, how pore engineering through the study of packing polymorphism in layered materials can dramatically change the separation performance of a physisorbent.

Near- and Long-Range Electronic Modulation of Single Metal Sites to Boost CO2 Electrocatalytic Reduction

Tuning the electronic structure of the active center is effective to improve the intrinsic activity of single-atom catalysts but the realization of precise regulation remains challenging. Herein, a strategy of "synergistically near- and long-range regulation" is reported to effectively modulate the electronic structure of single-atom sites. ZnN₄ sites decorated with axial sulfur ligand in the first coordination and surrounded phosphorus atoms in the carbon matrix are successfully constructed in the hollow carbon supports (ZnN₄ S₁ /P-HC). ZnN₄ S₁ /P-HC exhibits excellent performance for CO₂ reduction reaction (CO₂ RR) with a Faraday efficiency of CO close to 100%. The coupling of the CO₂ RR with thermodynamically favorable hydrazine oxidation reaction to replace oxygen evolution reaction in a two-electrode electrolyzer can greatly lower the cell voltage by 0.92 V at a current density of 5 mA cm^-2 , theoretically saving 46% of energy consumption. Theoretical calculation reveals that the near-range regulation with axial thiophene-S ligand and long-range regulation with neighboring P atoms can synergistically lead to the increase of electron localization around the Zn sites, which strengthens the adsorption of *COOH intermediate and therefore boosts the CO₂ RR.

Tetranuclear CuII Cluster as the Ten Node Building Unit for the Construction of a Metal-Organic Framework for Efficient C2 H2 /CO2 Separation

Rational design of high nuclear copper cluster-based metal-organic frameworks has not been established yet. Herein, we report a novel MOF (FJU-112) with the ten-connected tetranuclear copper cluster [Cu₄ (PO₃ )₂ (μ₂ -H₂ O)₂ (CO₂ )₄ ] as the node which was capped by the deprotonated organic ligand of H₄ L (3,5-Dicarboxyphenylphosphonic acid). With BPE (1,2-Bis(4-pyridyl)ethane) as the pore partitioner, the pore spaces in the structure of FJU-112 were divided into several smaller cages and smaller windows for efficient gas adsorption and separation. FJU-112 exhibits a high separation performance for the C₂ H₂ /CO₂ separation, which were established by the temperature-dependent sorption isotherms and further confirmed by the lab-scale dynamic breakthrough experiments. The grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations (GCMC) studies show that its high C₂ H₂ /CO₂ separation performance is contributed to the strong π-complexation interactions between the C₂ H₂ molecules and framework pore surfaces, leading to its more C₂ H₂ uptakes over CO₂ molecules.

Fluorido-bridged robust metal-organic frameworks for efficient C2H2/CO2 separation under moist conditions

The modern technology for acetylene production is inevitably accompanied by the contamination of carbon dioxide and moisture impurities. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), with rational configurations of fluorine as the hydrogen-bonding acceptor (HBA), exhibit excellent affinities to capture acetylene from the gas mixtures. Currently, most research studies feature anionic fluorine groups as structural pillars (e.g., SiF₆ ^2-, TiF₆ ^2-, NbOF₅ ^2-), whereas in situ insertion of fluorine into metal clusters is rather challenging. Herein, we report a unique fluorine-bridged Fe-MOF, i.e., DNL-9(Fe), which is assembled by mixed-valence Fe^IIFe^III clusters and renewable organic ligands. The fluorine species in the coordination-saturated structure offer superior C₂H₂-favored adsorption sites facilitated by hydrogen bonding, with a lower C₂H₂ adsorption enthalpy than other reported HBA-MOFs, demonstrated by static/dynamic adsorption tests and theoretical calculations. Importantly, DNL-9(Fe) shows exceptional hydrochemical stability under aqueous, acidic, and basic conditions, and its intriguing performance for C₂H₂/CO₂ separation was even maintained at a high relative humidity of 90%.

Microfluidic preparation of optical sensors for biomedical applications

Optical biosensors are platforms that translate biological information into detectable optical signals, and have extensive applications in various fields due to their characteristics of high sensitivity, high specificity, dynamic sensing, etc. The development of optical sensing materials is an important part of optical sensors. In this review, we emphasize the role of microfluidic technology in the preparation of optical sensing materials and the application of the derived optical sensors in the biomedical field. We first present some common optical sensing mechanisms and the functional responsive materials involved. Then, we describe the preparation of these sensing materials by microfluidics. Afterward, we enumerate the biomedical applications of these optical materials as biosensors in disease diagnosis, drug evaluation, and organ-on-a-chip. Finally, we discuss the challenges and prospects in this field.

Hybrid MOF Template-Directed Construction of Hollow-Structured In2 O3 @ZrO2 Heterostructure for Enhancing Hydrogenation of CO2 to Methanol

Direct hydrogenation of CO₂  to methanol using green hydrogen has emerged as a promising method for carbon neutrality, but qualifying catalysts represent a grand challenge. In₂ O₃ /ZrO₂  catalyst has been extensively applied in methanol synthesis due to its superior activity; however, the electronic effect by strong oxides-support interactions between In₂ O₃  and ZrO₂  at the In₂ O₃ /ZrO₂  interface is poorly understood. In this work, abundant In₂ O₃ /ZrO₂  heterointerfaces are engineered in a hollow-structured In₂ O₃ @ZrO₂  heterostructure through a facile pyrolysis of a hybrid metal-organic framework precursor MIL-68@UiO-66. Owing to well-defined In₂ O₃ /ZrO₂  heterointerfaces, the resultant In₂ O₃ @ZrO₂  exhibits superior activity and stability toward CO₂  hydrogenation to methanol, which can afford a high methanol selectivity of 84.6% at a conversion of 10.4% at 290 °C, and 3.0 MPa with a methanol space-time yield of up to 0.29 g_MeOH  g_cat ^-1  h^-1 . Extensive characterization demonstrates that there is a strong correlation between the strong electronic In₂ O₃ -ZrO₂  interaction and catalytic selectivity. At In₂ O₃ /ZrO₂  heterointerfaces, the electron tends to transfer from ZrO₂  to In₂ O₃  surface, which facilitates H₂  dissociation and the hydrogenation of formate (HCOO*) and methoxy (CH₃ O*) species to methanol. This study provides an insight into the In₂ O₃ -based catalysts and offers appealing opportunities for developing heterostructured CO₂  hydrogenation catalysts with excellent activity.

Enhanced Adsorption Selectivity of Carbon Dioxide and Ethane on Porous Metal-Organic Framework Functionalized by a Sulfur-Rich Heterocycle

Porous metal-organic framework [Zn₂(ttdc)₂(bpy)] (1) based on thieno [3,2-b]thiophenedicarboxylate (ttdc) was synthesized and characterized. The structure contains intersected zig-zag channels with an average aperture of 4 × 6 Å and a 49% (v/v) guest-accessible pore volume. Gas adsorption studies confirmed the microporous nature of 1 with a specific surface area (BET model) of 952 m²·g^-1 and a pore volume of 0.37 cm³·g^-1. Extensive CO₂, N₂, O₂, CO, CH₄, C₂H₂, C₂H₄ and C₂H₆ gas adsorption experiments at 273 K and 298 K were carried out, which revealed the great adsorption selectivity of C₂H₆ over CH₄ (IAST selectivity factor 14.8 at 298 K). The sulfur-rich ligands and double framework interpenetration in 1 result in a dense decoration of the inner surface by thiophene heterocyclic moieties, which are known to be effective secondary adsorption sites for carbon dioxide. As a result, remarkable CO₂ adsorption selectivities were obtained for CO₂/CH₄ (11.7) and CO₂/N₂ (27.2 for CO₂:N₂ = 1:1, 56.4 for CO₂:N₂ = 15:85 gas mixtures). The computational DFT calculations revealed the decisive role of the sulfur-containing heterocycle moieties in the adsorption of CO₂ and C₂H₆. High CO₂ adsorption selectivity values and a relatively low isosteric heat of CO₂ adsorption (31.4 kJ·mol^-1) make the porous material 1 a promising candidate for practical separation of biogas as well as for CO₂ sequestration from flue gas or natural gas.
