Abstract
Artificial photosynthesis enables direct solar-to-chemical energy conversion aimed at mitigating environmental pollution and producing solar fuels and chemicals in a green and sustainable approach, and efficient, robust, and low-cost photocatalysts are the heart of artificial photosynthesis systems. As an emerging new class of cocatalytic materials, single-atom catalysts (SACs) and dual-atom catalysts (DACs) have received a great deal of current attention due to their maximal atom utilization and unique photocatalytic properties, whereas noble-metal-free ones impart abundance, availability, and cost-effectiveness allowing for scalable implementation. This review outlines the fundamental principles and synthetic methods of SACs and DACs and summarizes the most recent advances in SACs (Co, Fe, Cu, Ni, Bi, Al, Sn, Er, La, Ba, etc.) and DACs (CuNi, FeCo, InCu, KNa, CoCo, CuCu, etc.) based on non-noble metals, confined on an arsenal of organic or inorganic substrates (polymeric carbon nitride, metal oxides, metal sulfides, metal-organic frameworks, carbon, etc.) acting as versatile scaffolds in solar-light-driven photocatalytic reactions, including hydrogen evolution, carbon dioxide reduction, methane conversion, organic synthesis, nitrogen fixation, hydrogen peroxide production, and environmental remediation. The review concludes with the challenges, opportunities, and future prospects of noble-metal-free SACs and DACs for artificial photosynthesis.

Abstract
A series of dehydrated MoS2/UiO-66(SH)2 (MS/UiS) composites has been prepared as photocatalysts for N2 fixation. Typically, 10% MS/UiS exhibits the best performance with an NH4+ yield rate of 54.08 μmol∙g-1∙h-1. 15N isotope test confirmed that the sample 10% MS/UiS was most effective for reducing N2 to ammonia. Such enhanced activity was due to the presence of abundant unsaturated Zr and Mo sites which would synergistically promote the adsorption and activation of N2. The photogenerated electrons would transfer to the unsaturated Zr-O clusters while part of photogenerated electrons at the interface migrate to MS via MoVI-O interactions between MS and UiS. These two electron transfer pathways effectively promote the separation of photogenerated carriers. The activated N2 is reduced to ammonia by the synergistic effect of protonated hydrogen and photogenerated electrons. Finally, a possible N2 fixation mechanism is proposed which emphasizes the significant roles of nitrogen activation and interface interaction in composites photocatalyst for improving photocatalytic performance.

Abstract
The field of photocatalysis has been evolving since 1972 since Honda and Fujishima's initial push for using light as an energy source to accomplish redox reactions. Since then, many photocatalysts have been studied, semiconductors or otherwise. A new photocatalytic application to convert N2 gas to ammonia (N2 fixation or nitrogen reduction reaction; NRR) has emerged. Many researchers have steered their research in this direction due to developments in the ease of ammonia detection through UV-Vis spectroscopy. This concept will specifically discuss Bi2 WO6 -based materials, techniques to enhance their photocatalytic activity (CO2 reduction, H2 production, pollutant removal, etc.), and their current application in photocatalytic NRR. Initially, a brief introduction of Bi2 WO6 along with its VB and CB potentials will be compared to various redox potentials. A final topic of interest would be a brief description of photocatalytic nitrogen fixation with additional consideration to Bi2 WO6 -based materials in N2 fixation. A major problem with photocatalytic NRR is the false ammonia quantification in Bi-based materials, which will be discussed in detail and also ways to minimize them.

Abstract
Drawing inspiration from the enzyme nitrogenase in nature, researchers are increasingly delving into semiconductor photocatalytic nitrogen fixation due to its similar surface catalytic processes. Herein, we reported a facile and efficient approach to achieving the regulation of ZnO/ZnCr2 O4 photocatalysts with ZnCr-layered double hydroxide (ZnCr-LDH) as precursors. By optimizing the composition ratio of Zn/Cr in ZnCr-LDH to tune interfaces, we can achieve an enhanced nitrogen photofixation performance (an ammonia evolution rate of 31.7 μmol g-1 h-1 using pure water as a proton source) under ambient conditions. Further, photo-electrochemical measurements and transient surface photovoltage spectroscopy revealed that the enhanced photocatalytic activity can be ascribed to the effective carrier separation efficiency, originating from the abundant composite interfaces. This work further demonstrated a promising and viable strategy for the synthesis of nanocomposite photocatalysts for nitrogen photofixation and other challenging photocatalytic reactions.

Abstract
Ammonia is an essential component of modern chemical products and the building unit of natural life molecules. The Haber-Bosch (H-B) process is mainly used in the ammonia synthesis process in the industry. In this process, nitrogen and hydrogen react to produce ammonia with metal catalysts under high temperatures and pressure. However, the H-B process consumes a lot of energy and simultaneously emits greenhouse gases. In the "double carbon" effect, to promote the combination of photocatalytic technology and artificial nitrogen fixation, the development of green synthetic reactions has been widely discussed. Using an inexhaustible supply of sunlight as a power source, researchers have used photocatalysts to reduce nitrogen to ammonia, which is energy-dense and easy to store and transport. This process completes the conversion from light energy to chemical energy. At the same time, it achieves zero carbon emissions, reducing energy consumption and environmental pollution in industrial ammonia synthesis from the source. The application of photocatalytic technology in the nitrogen cycle has become one of the research hotspots in the new energy field. This article provides a classification of and an introduction to nitrogen-fixing photocatalysts reported in recent years and prospects the future development trends in this field.

Abstract
This paper details the use of computational and informatics methods to design metal nanocluster catalysts for efficient ammonia synthesis. Three main problems are tackled: defining a measure of catalytic activity, choosing the best candidate from a large number of possibilities, and identifying the thermodynamically stable cluster catalyst structure. First-principles calculations, Bayesian optimization, and particle swarm optimization are used to obtain a Ti8 nanocluster as a catalyst candidate. The N2 adsorption structure on Ti8 indicates substantial activation of the N2 molecule, while the NH3 adsorption structure suggests that NH3 is likely to undergo easy desorption. The study also reveals several cluster catalyst candidates that break the general trade-off that surfaces that strongly adsorb reactants also strongly adsorb products.

Abstract
Photocatalytic N2 fixation is a complex reaction, thereby prompting researchers to design and analyze highly efficient materials. Herein, one-pot hydrothermal Bi2WO6-BiOCl (BW-BiOCl) heterojunctions were synthesized by varying the molar ratio of tungsten: chlorine precursor. Major morphological transformations in BiOCl were observed wherein it turned from thick sheets ∼230 nm in pure BiOCl to ∼30 nm in BW-BiOCl. This was accompanied by extensive growth of {001} facets verified from X-ray diffraction (XRD) and field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM) analyses. A p-n heterojunction was formed between Bi2WO6 and BiOCl evidenced via photoluminescence (PL), time-resolved photoluminescence (TRPL), photocurrent response, and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses. The formation of heterojunction between Bi2WO6 and BiOCl led to the reduction of the work function in the BW-BiOCl 0.25 hybrid confirmed via ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy (UPS) analysis. BW-BiOCl 0.25 could produce ammonia up to 345.1 μmol·L-1·h-1 owing to the formation of a robust heterojunction with an S-scheme carrier transport mechanism. Recycle tests resulted in no loss in N2 reduction activities with post-catalytic analysis, showcasing the high stability of the synthesized heterojunction. Novel performance was owed to its excellent chemisorption of N2 gas on the heterojunction surface verified by N2-temperature programmed desorption (TPD). BW-BiOCl 0.25 also displayed a superior rate constant of 3.03 × 10-2 min-1 for 90 min CIP degradation time, higher than pristine BiOCl and Bi2WO6. Post-photocatalytic Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy of BW-BiOCl 0.25 revealed the presence of C-H stretching peaks in the range of 2850-2960 cm-1 due to adsorbed CIP and methanol species in CIP degradation and N2 fixation, respectively. This also confirmed the enhanced adsorption of reacting species onto the heterojunction surface.

Abstract
Nowadays, a promising material for NH3 production under mild and safe conditions using heterogeneous photocatalysts is very important. In this regard, Bi2O3 and NaBiS2 nanoparticles were combined with TiO2 quantum dots (QDs) through a facile hydrothermal process. The TiO2 QDs/Bi2O3/NaBiS2 nanocomposites displayed excellent performance in the photofixation of nitrogen upon simulated sunlight. The NH3 generation rate constant over the optimum nanocomposite was 10.2 and 3.3-folds higher than TiO2 (P25) and TiO2 QDs photocatalysts, respectively. The spectroscopic and electrochemical studies affirmed more effective segregation and transfer of photo-induced charge carriers within ternary nanocomposite, due to the developing tandem n-n-p heterojunctions, which led to more lifetime of charges. Moreover, the impacts of solvent, pH, electron scavenger, and lake of nitrogen molecules on the NH3 generation were investigated. Finally, it was concluded that the TiO2 QDs/Bi2O3/NaBiS2 nanocomposite, with appealing features of more activity, high stability, and a facile one-pot synthesis method, is a promising photocatalyst in nitrogen fixation technology.

Abstract
The efficient synthesis of ammonia using carbon-footprint-free hydrogen under mild conditions is a grand challenge in chemistry today. To achieve this objective, novel concepts are needed for the activation process and catalyst. This article briefly reviews catalytic activation of N2 for ammonia synthesis under mild conditions. The features of the various activation methods reported so far are summarized, looking chronologically back at progress in heterogeneous catalysts since the use of iron oxide for the Haber-Bosch process, and finally the technical challenges to be overcome are described. Establishing low work functions for the support materials of the metal catalysts is one key to reducing the activation barrier to dissociate N2. Surfaces of electride materials that preserve the character of the bulk are shown to be useful for this purpose. The requirements of desired catalysts are high efficiency at low temperatures, Ru-free compositions, and chemical robustness in the ambient atmosphere.

Abstract
Since the advent of photocatalytic technology, scientists have been searching for semiconductor materials with high efficiency in solar energy utilization and conversion to chemical energy. Recently, the development of quantum dot (QD) photocatalysts has attracted much attention because of their unique characteristics: small size, quantum effects, strong surface activity, and wide photoresponse range. Among ternary chalcogenide semiconductors, CuInS2 QDs are increasingly examined in the field of photocatalysis due to their high absorption coefficients, good matching of the absorption range with sunlight spectrum, long lifetimes of photogenerated electron-hole pairs and environmental sustainability. In this review paper, the structural and electronic properties, synthesis methods and various photocatalytic applications of CuInS2 QDs are systematically expounded. The current research status on the photocatalytic properties of materials based on CuInS2 QD is discussed combined with the existing modification approaches for the enhancement of their performances. Future challenges and new development opportunities of CuInS2 QDs in the field of photocatalysis are then prospected.

This study enhances the photocatalytic N2 immobilization performance of Bi2MoO6 through Cu doping. Cu-doped Bi2MoO6 was synthesized via a simple solvothermal method. Various characterizations were implemented to examine the influence of Cu doping on the properties of Bi2MoO6. Results indicated that the doped Cu element had a valence state of + 2 and substituted the position of Bi3+. Cu doping exerted minimal effect on the morphology of Bi2MoO6 but largely influenced the energy band structure. The band gap was slightly narrowed, and the conduction band was raised, such that Cu-doped Bi2MoO6 could generate more electrons with stronger reducibility. Moreover, importantly, Cu doping reduced work function and improved charge separation efficiency, which was considered the major cause of enhanced photoactivity. In addition, the Cu-Bi2MoO6 catalyst exhibited higher capability in the adsorption and activation of N2. Under the combined effects of the aforementioned changes, Cu-Bi2MoO6 demonstrated considerably higher photocatalytic efficiency than Bi2MoO6. The optimized NH3 generation rate reached 302 μmol/L g-1h-1 and 157 μmol/L g-1h-1 under simulated solar light and visible light, respectively, both achieving about 2.2 times higher than that of Bi2MoO6. This work provides a successful example of improving photocatalytic N2 fixation, and it may show some light on the design and preparation of heteroatom-doped semiconductor photocatalysts for N2-to-NH3 conversion.

Abstract
In this study, the photocatalytic N2 immobilization performance of NaNbO3 is enhanced via oxygen vacancy introduction and Pt loading. The designed Pt-loaded NaNbO3 with rich oxygen defects (Pt/O-NaNbO3) is synthesized by combining ion-exchange and photodeposition methods. Characterization result indicates that the O-NaNbO3 has hollow microcube morphology and higher surface area than NaNbO3. The introduced oxygen defects greatly affect the energy band structure. The band gap is slightly narrowed and the conduction band is raised, allowing O-NaNbO3 to generate electrons with strong reducibility. Moreover, the oxygen defects reduced the work function of NaNbO3, leading to increased charge separation in the bulk phase. The loaded Pt nanoparticles can further increase the surface charge separation via the formed Schottky barriers between Pt and O-NaNbO3, which was thought to be the primary cause of the increased photocatalytic activity. Additionally, the oxygen vacancies and metal Pt also contribute to the adsorption and activation of N2. Under the combined effect of the above changes, Pt/O-NaNbO3 presents much higher photoactivity than NaNbO3. The optimized NH3 production rate reaches 293.3 μmol/L g-1h-1 under simulated solar light, which is approximately 2.2 and 20.2 times higher than that of O-NaNbO3 and NaNbO3, respectively. This research offers a successful illustration of how to improve photocatalytic N2 fixation and may shed some light on how to design and construct efficient photocatalysts by combining several techniques.

Abstract
Environmentally friendly photocatalytic N2 fixation process has attracted considerable attention. Developing efficient photocatalysts with high electron-hole separation rates and gas adsorption capacities remains quite challenging. Herein, a facile fabrication strategy of Cu-Cu2O and multicomponent hydroxide S-scheme heterojunctions with carbon dot charge mediators is reported. The rational heterostructurebrings excellent N2 absorption ability and high photoinduced electron/hole separation efficiency, and the ammonia produced yield reach above 210 µmol·gcal-1·h-1 during the nitrogen photofixation process. More superoxide and hydroxyl radicals are generated simultaneously in the as-prepared samples under light illumination. This work offers a reasonable construction method to further develop suitable photocatalysts for ammonia synthesis.

Abstract
Photocatalytic nitrogen fixation opens new opportunities for sustainable and healthier futures, and developing effective and inexpensive photocatalysts is the key. We use the ligand 3,3',5,5'-azomellitic acid (H4abtc) to connect with Fe clusters and Zr clusters to form stable metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) Fe-abtc and Zr-abtc, both of which are responsive to visible lights for nitrogen fixation. It is worth noting that the presence of NN in the ligand makes it respond to visible lights. The tetracarboxyl group is connected to the metal cluster to form a stable structure. The field-only surface integral method verified that the ligands were successfully applied into the synthesized MOF particles, which expanded the photoresponse range and enhanced the photonic interactions of the synthesized photocatalysts compared with pure MOF particles. The best photocatalytic nitrogen fixation performance of Fe-abtc and Zr-abtc is 49.8 μmol·g(cat.)-1·h-1 and 35.7 μmol·g(cat.)-1·h-1, respectively, the apparent quantum efficiency (AQY) of the sample Fe-abtc is 0.56 %, and the reliability of the source of N element is proved by the isotope 15N2. This work provides a new idea for the design of cheap and effective MOFs for photocatalytic nitrogen fixation.

Abstract
Seeking highly-efficient, non-pollutant, and chemically robust photocatalysts for visible-light-driven ammonia production still remained challenging, especially in pure water. The key bottle-necks closely correlate to the nitrogen activation, water oxidization, and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) processes. In this study, a novel Bi decorated imine-linked COF-TaTp (Bi/COF-TaTp) through N-Bi-O coordination is reasonably designed to achieve a boosting solar-to-ammonia conversion of 61 µmol-1 g-1 h-1 in the sacrificial-free system. On basis of serial characterizations and DFT calculations, the incorporated Bi is conducive to the acceleration of charge carriers transfer and N2 activation through the donation and back-donation mode. The N2 adsorption energy of 5% Bi/COF-TaTp is calculated to be -0.19 eV in comparison with -0.09 eV of the pure COF-TaTp and the electron exchange between N2 and the modified catalyst is much more intensive. Moreover, the accompanied hydrogen production process is effectively inhibited by Bi modification, demonstrated by the higher energy barrier for HER over Bi/COF-TaTp (2.62 eV) than the pure COF-TaTp (2.31 eV) when using H binding free energy (ΔGH* ) as a descriptor. This work supplies novel insights for the design of photocatalysts for N2 reduction and intensifies the understanding of N2 adsorption and activation over covalent organic frameworks-based materials.
