Advancing integrated CO2 electrochemical conversion with amine-based CO2 capture: a review

Reactive capture and electrochemical conversion of CO2 with ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents

Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have tremendous potential for reactive capture and conversion (RCC) of CO2 due to their wide electrochemical stability window, low volatility, and high CO2 solubility. There is environmental and economic interest in the direct utilization of the captured CO2 using electrified and modular processes that forgo the thermal- or pressure-swing regeneration steps to concentrate CO2, eliminating the need to compress, transport, or store the gas. The conventional electrochemical conversion of CO2 with aqueous electrolytes presents limited CO2 solubility and high energy requirement to achieve industrially relevant products. Additionally, aqueous systems have competitive hydrogen evolution. In the past decade, there has been significant progress toward the design of ILs and DESs, and their composites to separate CO2 from dilute streams. In parallel, but not necessarily in synergy, there have been studies focused on a few select ILs and DESs for electrochemical reduction of CO2, often diluting them with aqueous or non-aqueous solvents. The resulting electrode-electrolyte interfaces present a complex speciation for RCC. In this review, we describe how the ILs and DESs are tuned for RCC and specifically address the CO2 chemisorption and electroreduction mechanisms. Critical bulk and interfacial properties of ILs and DESs are discussed in the context of RCC, and the potential of these electrolytes are presented through a techno-economic evaluation.

A US perspective on closing the carbon cycle to defossilize difficult-to-electrify segments of our economy

Electrification to reduce or eliminate greenhouse gas emissions is essential to mitigate climate change. However, a substantial portion of our manufacturing and transportation infrastructure will be difficult to electrify and/or will continue to use carbon as a key component, including areas in aviation, heavy-duty and marine transportation, and the chemical industry. In this Roadmap, we explore how multidisciplinary approaches will enable us to close the carbon cycle and create a circular economy by defossilizing these difficult-to-electrify areas and those that will continue to need carbon. We discuss two approaches for this: developing carbon alternatives and improving our ability to reuse carbon, enabled by separations. Furthermore, we posit that co-design and use-driven fundamental science are essential to reach aggressive greenhouse gas reduction targets.

Reactive Carbon Capture Enables CO2 Electrolysis with Liquid Feedstocks

ConspectusThe electrochemical reduction of carbon dioxide (CO2RR) is a promising strategy for mitigating global CO2 emissions while simultaneously yielding valuable chemicals and fuels, such as CO, HCOO-, and C2H4. This approach becomes especially appealing when integrated with surplus renewable electricity, as the ensuing production of fuels could facilitate the closure of the carbon cycle. Despite these advantages, the realization of industrial-scale electrolyzers fed with CO2 will be challenged by the substantial energy inputs required to isolate, pressurize, and purify CO2 prior to electrolysis.To address these challenges, we devised an electrolyzer capable of directly converting reactive carbon solutions (e.g., a bicarbonate-rich eluent that exits a carbon capture unit) into higher value products. This "reactive carbon electrolyzer" operates by reacting (bi)carbonate with acid generated within the electrolyzer to produce CO2 in situ, thereby facilitating CO2RR at the cathode. This approach eliminates the need for expensive CO2 recovery and compression steps, as the electrolyzer can then then coupled directly to the CO2 capture unit.This Account outlines our endeavors in developing this type of electrolyzer, focusing on the design and implementation of materials for electrocatalytic (bi)carbonate conversion. We highlight the necessity for a permeable cathode that allows the efficient transport of (bi)carbonate ions while maintaining a sufficiently high catalytic surface area. We address the importance of the supporting electrolyte, detailing how (bi)carbonate concentration, counter cations, and ionic impurities impact selectivity for products formed in the electrolyzer. We also catalog state-of-the-art performance metrics for reactive carbon electrolyzers (i.e., Faradaic efficiency, full cell voltage, CO2 utilization efficiency) and outline strategies to bridge the gap between these values and those required for commercial operation Collectively, these findings contribute to the ongoing efforts to realize industrial-scale electrochemical reactors for CO2 conversion, bringing us closer to a sustainable and closed-loop carbon cycle.

Effects of the Carbon Support on Heterogeneous Molecular Catalysts for Carbon Dioxide Reduction

Molecular catalysts stabilized on a support material, also called heterogeneous molecular catalysts, exhibit excellent performance in carbon dioxide reduction reaction (CO2 RR). Different support in these electrocatalysts can have a substantial influence on the activity, making support control one tool to enhance the CO2 RR performance. However, a systematic understanding of the support effects is lacking. Taking cobalt phthalocyanine (CoPc) immobilized onto different carbon materials as examples, we demonstrate that the surface area, pore structure and the morphology of the as-prepared heterogeneous molecular catalysts can influence the CO2 transfer and adsorption, and then change the CO2 RR activity. In contrast to the other four materials, CoPc/mesoporous carbon (MC) can efficiently convert carbon dioxide to carbon monoxide at minimal overpotential (-0.8 V vs. RHE) due to its special nanostructure and pore distribution. The results of this study suggest that the performance of electrocatalytic reduction of carbon dioxide can be improved by changing different substrates.

Reversible CO2 Fixation and Release by a Trinuclear Zn(II) Cryptate Complex and Operando Analysis of the Complex Structure

Metal complexes inspired by carbonic anhydrase (CA), which is a metalloenzyme containing Zn(II), have been investigated as alternatives for CO2 fixation systems operating under ambient temperature and pressure conditions. In this study, we designed a trinuclear Zn(II) cryptate complex (Zn3 L) and demonstrated rapid CO2 fixation with carbonation of CO2 using Zn3 L. The CO2 fixation performance of Zn3 L surpassed that of a standard CO2 absorbent, KOH(aq) solution, under conditions of the same solute concentration. In addition, the reaction achieved operation without support addition of base, which has been often required in systems of CA-inspired complexes. Fixed CO2 was released by protonating polyazacryptate ligand (L) and breaking the complex structure, and deprotonation of L induced the reconstruction of Zn3 L, allowing it to refix CO2 . This reaction mechanism was proposed based on the analysis of operando extended X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy. Zn3 L also demonstrated the ability to capture dilute CO2 from air, and the volume of CO2 captured by Zn3 L was approximately 2.6 times that captured by the KOH(aq) solution. Our Zn3 L exhibited three valuable properties: rapid CO2 fixation without a base, reversibility, and ability to capture dilute CO2 ; thus Zn3 L is a promising candidate as CO2 fixatives.

Energy comparison of sequential and integrated CO2 capture and electrochemical conversion

Integrating carbon dioxide (CO2) electrolysis with CO2 capture provides exciting new opportunities for energy reductions by simultaneously removing the energy-demanding regeneration step in CO2 capture and avoiding critical issues faced by CO2 gas-fed electrolysers. However, understanding the potential energy advantages of an integrated process is not straightforward due to the interconnected processes which require knowledge of both capture and electrochemical conversion processes. Here, we identify the upper limits of the integrated process from an energy perspective by comparing the working principles and performance of integrated and sequential approaches. Our high-level energy analyses unveil that an integrated electrolyser must show similar performance to the gas-fed electrolyser to ensure an energy benefit of up to 44% versus the sequential route. However, such energy benefits diminish if future gas-fed electrolysers resolve the CO2 utilisation issue and if an integrated electrolyser shows lower conversion efficiencies than the gas-fed system.
