Fluorescent Sensors Based on Lanthanide-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks via Devices and pH Response

In light of the escalating industrial and environmental pollution, there is a pressing need for the development of novel materials capable of swiftly detecting pollutants. Here, we report the synthesis of five lanthanide metal-organic frameworks sharing a common structure, prepared via a hydrothermal method and denoted as [Ln2(H2DHBDC)2(phen)(H2O)6]n (where CUST-888 corresponds to Tb, CUST-889 corresponds to Eu, CUST-890 corresponds to Gd, CUST-891 corresponds to Dy, and CUST-892 corresponds to Nd). Notably, CUST-888 and CUST-889 exhibit discernible visual alterations in response to acidic and alkaline conditions. To assess their practical utility, luminescent test strips and light-emitting diode lights based on CUST-888 and CUST-889 were devised, enabling the visual detection of luminescence color changes induced by Hg2+, Cr2O72-, tetracycline, and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol. Furthermore, highlighters derived from CUST-888 and CUST-889 were designed, showcasing robust stability, adjustable color, and substantial potential for application in the realm of anticounterfeiting.

Dual-ligand lanthanide metal-organic framework based ratiometric fluorescent platform for visual monitoring of aminoglycoside residues in food samples

Herein, a dual-emission Eu metal-organic framework (Eu-MOF) is prepared and used as the ratiometric fluorescence probe for ultrasensitive detection of aminoglycoside antibiotics (AGs). Due to the strong hydrogen bond interactions between AGs and Eu-MOF, the blue emission is enhanced while the red emission has little fluctuation in Eu-MOF with the addition of AGs, thus a good linear relationship with the logarithm of AGs concentrations from 0.001 to 100 μg/mL can be established for quantitative analysis. Good sensitivity with the detection limit of 0.33 ng/mL for apramycin, 0.32 ng/mL for amikacin and 0.30 ng/mL for kanamycin is achieved. The proposed assay demonstrates good selectivity and applicability for determination of AGs in real milk and honey samples. The Eu-MOF materials are further fabricated as fluorescent test papers for facile visual detection. The as-established ratio fluorescence platform offers a portable and economical way for rapid monitoring AGs residues in complex food samples.

Investigation of the Sensing Properties of Lanthanoid Metal-Organic Frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with Terephthalic Acid

The solvothermal synthesis of LnCl3.nH2O with terephthalic acid (benzene-1,4-dicarboxylic acid, H2BDC) produced metal-organic frameworks (LnBDC), [Ln2(BDC)3(H2O)4]∞, where Ln = Sm, Eu, Tb, and Dy. The materials obtained were characterized by a number of physico-chemical techniques. The influence of the ionic radius of the lanthanides on the microstructural characteristics of the Ln-MOFs was evaluated by performing Rietveld refinement. The MOFs obtained were tested as fluorescent sensors for numerous cations and anions in water. The highly luminescent EuBDC and TbBDC demonstrated multi-responsive luminescence sensing functions to detect Ag(I), Fe(III), Cr(III), and Cr(VI), which are essential for their environmental applications. By applying the non-linear Stern-Volmer equation, the fluorescent quenching mechanism was determined. The stability of the obtained materials in water in a wide pH range (acidity pH = 4 and alkalinity pH = 9 solutions) was confirmed.

Highly stable Tb(III) metal-organic framework derived from a new benzothiadiazole functionalized ligand for fluorescence recognition of ascorbic acid

Because ascorbic acid (AA) is one of the basic elements to maintain the normal physiological functions of human body, it is urgent to develop a material that can achieve efficient, rapid and in-situ detection for AA. A new fluorescence organic compound 4',4'''-(benzo[c][1,2,5]thiadiazole-4,7-diyl)bis([1,1'-biphenyl]-4-carboxylic acid) (H2BTBC) based on benzothiadiazole group has been synthesized, which can detect Fe3+ ions by fluorescence turn-off effect with a detection limit of 0.015 μM, as well as recognize linear amines by fluorescence turn-on effect. Moreover, a highly stable Tb(III) metal-organic framework has been solvothermally prepared with H2BTBC, namely {[(CH3)2NH2]2[Tb2(BTBC)4]∙solvents}n (JXUST-39), which can selectively detect AA among biological fluids by fluorescence enhancement effect with a detection limit of 0.077 μM. In addition, the mechanism for JXUST-39 detecting AA is possibly the cooperative effect of absorbance-caused enhancement and charge transfer between JXUST-39 and AA. Moreover, LED lamp beads, fluorescent films and fluorescent detection test paper based on JXUST-39 were prepared to achieve portable detection via fluorescence enhancement effect.

A family of Cd(II) coordination polymers constructed from 6-aminopicolinate and bipyridyl co-linkers: study of their growth in paper and photoluminescence sensing of Fe3+ and Zn2+ ions

In this work, we report on five novel coordination polymers (CPs) based on the linkage of the [Cd(6apic)2] building block [where 6apic = 6-aminopicolinate] by different bipyridine-type organic spacers, forming different coordination compounds with the following formulae: [Cd(μ-6apic)2]n (1), {[Cd(6apic)2(μ-bipy)]·H2O}n (2), {[Cd(6apic)2(μ-bpe)]·2H2O}n (3), [Cd(6apic)(μ-6apic)(μ-bpa)0.5]n (4) and {[Cd2(6apic)4(μ-tmbp)]·7H2O}n (5) [where bipy = 4,4'-bipyridine, bpe = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethylene, bpa = 1,2-di(4-pyridyl)ethane (bpa) and tmbp = 1,3-di(4-pyridyl)propane]. Most of the synthesized compounds form infinite metal-organic rods through the linkage of the building block by the bipyridine-type linker, except in the case of compound 4 whose assembly forms a densely packed 3D architecture. All compounds were fully characterized and their photoluminescence properties were studied experimentally and computationally through density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All compounds display, upon UV excitation, a similar blue emission of variable intensity depending on the linker employed for the connection of the building units, among which compound 2 deserves to be highlighted for its room temperature phosphorescence (RTP) with an emission lifetime of 32 ms that extends to 79 ms at low temperature. These good photoluminescence properties, in addition to its stability in water over a wide pH range (between 2 and 10), motivated us to study compound 2 as a sensor for the detection of metal ions in water, and it showed high sensitivity to Fe3+ through a fluorescence turn-off mechanism and an unspecific turn-on response to Zn2+. Furthermore, the compound is processed as a paper-based analytical device (PAD) in which the phosphorescence emission is preserved, improving the sensing capacity toward Fe3+ ions.

Unlocking Arene Phosphorescence in Bismuth-Organic Materials

Three novel bismuth-organic compounds, with the general formula [Bi2(HPDC)2(PDC)2]·(arene)·2H2O (H2PDC = 2,6-pyridinedicarboxylic acid; arene = pyrene, naphthalene, and azulene), that consist of neutral dinuclear Bi-pyridinedicarboxylate complexes and outer coordination sphere arene molecules were synthesized and structurally characterized. The structures of all three phases exhibit strong π-π stacking interactions between the Bi-bound PDC/HPDC and outer sphere organic molecules; these interactions effectively sandwich the arene molecules between bismuth complexes and thereby prevent molecular vibrations. Upon UV irradiation, the compounds containing pyrene and naphthalene displayed red and green emission, respectively, with quantum yields of 1.3(2) and 30.8(4)%. The emission was found to originate from the T1 → S0 transition of the corresponding arene and result in phosphorescence characteristic of the arene employed. By comparison, the azulene-containing compound displayed very weak blue-purple phosphorescence of unknown origin and is a rare example of T2 → S0 emission from azulene. The pyrene- and naphthalene-containing compounds both display radioluminescence, with intensities of 11 and 38% relative to bismuth germanate, respectively. Collectively, these results provide further insights into the structure-property relationships that underpin luminescence from Bi-based materials and highlight the utility of Bi-organic molecules in the realization of organic emission.

Multi-analyte fluorescence sensing based on a post-synthetically functionalized two-dimensional Zn-MOF nanosheets featuring excited-state proton transfer process

Covalent post-synthetic modification of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) represents an underexplored but promising avenue for allowing the addition of specific fluorescent recognition elements to produce the novel MOF-based sensory materials with multiple-analyte detection capability. Here, an excited-state proton transfer (ESPT) active sensor 2D-Zn-NS-P was designed and constructed by covalent post-synthetic incorporation of the excited-state tautomeric 2-hydroxypyridine moiety into the ultrasonically exfoliated amino-tagged 2D Zn-MOF nanosheets (2D-Zn-NS). The water-mediated ESPT process facilitates the highly accessible active sites incorporated on the surface of 2D-Zn-NS-P to specifically respond to the presence of water in common organic solvents via fluorescence turn-on behavior, and accurate quantification of trace amount of water in acetonitrile, acetone and ethanol was established using the as-synthesized nanosheet sensor with the detection sensitivity (<0.01% v/v) superior to the conventional Karl Fischer titration. Upon exposure to Fe3+ or Cr2O72-, the intense blue emission of the aqueous colloidal dispersion of 2D-Zn-NS-P was selectively quenched even in the coexistence of common inorganic interferents. The prohibition of the water-mediated ESPT process and local emission, induced by the coordination of ESPT fluorophore with Fe3+ or by Cr2O72- competitively absorbs the excitation energy, was proposed to responsible for the fluorescence turn-off sensing of the respective analytes. The present study offers the attractive prospect to develop the ESPT-based fluorescent MOF nanosheets by covalent post-synthetic modification strategy as multi-functional sensors for detection of target analytes.

Construction of Multifunctional Luminescent Lanthanide MOFs for Luminescent Sensing of Temperature, Trifluoroacetic Acid Vapor and Explosives

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with multifunctional and tunable optical properties have unique advantages in the field of sensing, and the structure and properties of MOFs are significantly influenced by the ligands. In this study, a Y-type tricarboxylic acid ligand containing amide bonds was synthesized through functional guidance, and three isomorphic and heterogeneous three-dimensional MOFs (Eu-MOF, Tb-MOF, and Gd-MOF) were obtained by solvothermal reaction. Further studies revealed that both the Tb-MOF and Eu-MOF could selectively detect picric acid (PA). The luminescence quenching of the two MOFs by PA was attributed to competing absorption and photoelectron energy transfer mechanisms. In addition, due to the energy transfer between Tb and Rhodamine B, Rhodamine B was encapsulated into Tb-MOF. The obtained material exhibited a linear relationship between the temperature parameters I544/I584 and temperature within the range of 280-400 K, the correlation coefficient (R2) reached an impressive value of 0.999, and the absolute sensitivity of the sample used for temperature sensing was 1.534% K-1. What is more, the material exhibited a good response to trifluoroacetic acid vapor, which suggests the potential of the material for temperature sensing and detection of trifluoroacetic acid vapor. The designed and investigated strategy can also serve as a reference for further research on excellent multifunctional sensors.

Turn-off luminescence sensing, white light emission and magnetic studies of two-dimensional lanthanide MOFs

The lanthanide metal organic framework compounds [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1a-5a) and [Ln(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (Ln = Y, Eu, Gd, Tb, Dy; 1b-5b) were prepared by employing 2,5-bis(prop-2-yn-1-yloxy)terephthalic acid (2,5-BPTA) as the primary ligand and 2,2'-bipyridine (1a-5a) and 1,10-phenanthroline (1b-5b) as the secondary ligands. Single-crystal structural studies on [Gd(BPTA)1.5(Bpy)]·0.5DMF (3a) and [Dy(BPTA)1.5(Phen)]·0.5DMF (5b) indicated that the compounds have a two-dimensional structure. The Y compound exhibits blue emission, and the other compounds exhibit emission in the expected regions (λex = 350 nm). White light emission was achieved by careful mixing of the red (Eu3+) and green (Tb3+) components in the blue emitting Y compound. Thus, Y0.96Tb0.02Eu0.02 (bpy) and Y0.939Tb0.06Eu0.001 (phen) were found to show white emission when excited using a wavelength of 350 nm. The introduction of N-N-containing ancillary ligands (i.e., bpy and phen) increased the overall quantum yield (QY) of white light emission to 31% and 43%, respectively. The high QY observed for the Tb and Eu compounds was found to be sensitive and selective for the fluorometric detection of azinphos-methyl pesticide and trinitrophenol (TNP) in an aqueous medium at the ppb level. The same behaviour was observed when utilising the compounds as onsite paper strip sensors. Their magnetic properties were also studied, revealing for the Tb and Dy derivatives slow relaxation of the magnetisation at low temperature. The present study highlights the usefulness of rigid π-conjugated molecules such as 2,2'-bipyridine and 1,10-phenanthroline in enhancing the many utilities of rare-earth-containing MOFs towards white light emission, the sensing of harmful and dangerous substances and magnetic properties.

Stable Pyrene-Based Metal-Organic Framework for Cyclization of Propargylic Amines with CO2 and Detection of Antibiotics in Water

A pyrene-based metal-organic framework, Cd2(PTTB)(H2O)2 (WYU-11), was synthesized from the tetracarboxylic pyrene ligand H4PTTB (H4PTTB = 1,3,6,8-tetrakis(3-carboxyphenyl)pyrene) and Cd(NO3)2·4H2O. Powder X-ray diffraction analysis discloses that the framework is stable in acid, base, and various organic solvent environments. WYU-11 shows excellent catalytic performance on the cyclization reaction of propargylic amines with CO2 into 2-oxazolidinones under mild conditions (60 °C, atmospheric CO2). 1H NMR studies unveiled that WYU-11 and 1,1,3,3-tetramethylguanidine (TMG) can synergistically activate the propargylic amine substrate and promote the reaction. Importantly, WYU-11 represents a rare example of noble metal-free heterogeneous catalyst that can catalyze the cyclization of CO2 with propargylic amines. In addition, by virtue of the excellent water stability and luminescence properties, WYU-11 shows excellent detection performance for sulfathiazole (STZ) and ornidazole (ODZ) in water. Investigation reveals that the coexistence of photoinduced electron transfer and internal filtering effect could reasonably explain the luminescence quenching of WYU-11 by the antibiotics.

Multifunctional Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks Based on -NH2 Modified Ligand: Fluorescent Ratio Probe, CrO42- Ions Adsorption, and Photocatalytic Property

In response to the growing concern for environmental pollution, two lanthanide compounds {[Ln(L)(H2O)]·4H2O}n (where Ln = Tb and Gd, H3L = 1-amino-2,4,6-benzene tricarboxylic acid) were synthesized using a -NH2 modified ligand and systematically characterized. Both compounds exhibit remarkable fluorescence response, adsorption of CrO42- ions, and photocatalytic degradation properties, as well as exceptional acid-base and thermal stability. Remarkably, the pH-dependent 1-Tb exhibits exceptional performance as a fluorescent probe for detecting Fe3+ and CrO42-/Cr2O72- ions in aqueous solutions, while also serving as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for the detection of Cr3+, offering rapid response, high sensitivity, selectivity, and recoverability advantages in application. Moreover, 1-Tb exhibits excellent detection capabilities and displays effective adsorption of CrO42- ions, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 230.71 mg/g. On the other hand, 1-Gd exhibits superior performance compared to 1-Tb in the photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics. The degradation mechanism is further elucidated by conducting experiments with DFT theoretical calculations.

Highly stable lanthanide(III) metal-organic frameworks as ratiometric fluorescence sensors for vitamin B6

Three lanthanide(III)-based metal-organic frameworks, formulated as [(CH3)2NH2]2[Ln6(μ3-OH)8(EBTC)3(H2O)6]·4H2O·2DMF (Ln = Eu (1), Tb (2) and Ce (3)), were synthesized using a rigid tetracarboxylate organic ligand (1,1'-ethynebenzene-3,3',5,5'-tetracarboxylic acid, H4EBTC). Complexes 1-3 possess 12-connected hexanuclear [Ln6(μ3-OH)8(OOC-)12(H2O)6] clusters with the ftw topology, which were stable in water and acid/alkaline aqueous solution. Due to the antenna effect, complexes 1 and 2 presented double fluorescence emission peaks, which are the characteristic emission peaks of Ln3+ ions and the ligand H4EBTC, respectively. The doped bimetallic EuxTb1--x-MOFs were obtained by tuning the Eu(III)/Tb(III) ratio during the reaction, which exhibited a colour change from red, orange, and yellow to green. Furthermore, complexes 1, 2 and Eu2Tb8-MOF as ratiometric fluorescence sensors exhibited excellent sensing ability for vitamin B6 (VB6) in phosphate buffer solution (pH = 7.35) and real samples with high selectivity and reusability. The low detection limit (LOD) values were calculated to be 1.03 μM for complex 1, 0.25 μM for complex 2 and 0.11 μM for Eu2Tb8-MOF in aqueous solution. Finally, a visual film based on Ln-MOF@SA was prepared to detect VB6 with high reusability.

3D ZnII-Based coordination polymer: Synthesis, structure and fluorescent sensing property for nitroaromatic compounds

A water-stable Zn^II-based coordination polymer (CP) with excellent photophysical behavior, namely [Zn₂L(atez)(H₂O)₂] (compound 1; H₃L = 4-(2',3'-dicarboxylphenoxy); atez = 5-aminotetrazole), was successfully prepared by the solvothermal reaction of Zn ions with a π-conjugated and semi-rigid multicarboxylate ligand H₃L in the presence of N-containing linker atez. Compound 1 displays a hierarchically pillared three-dimensional (3D) (3,4,5)-connected (4·6²) (4²·6⁴) (4³·6⁴·8³) net which is based on two-dimensional (2D) multicarboxylate- Zn^II layers strutted by the atez ligands. Sensing investigations of compound 1 reveal that this material can selectively and sensitively detect nitroaromatic compounds in water suspension through fluorescence quenching effect. In particular, it is worth noting that it shows highly specific detection of nitrobenzene (NB) and 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) with remarkable quenching constants (K_SV = 7.5 × 10⁴ M^-1 for NB and K_SV = 1.9 × 10⁵ M^-1 for TNP) and low limit of detection (LOD = 0.93 μM for NB and LOD = 0.36 μM for TNP). Investigations reveal that the probable mechanisms for such sensing processes are the concurrent presence of fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) as well as photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between the CP and nitroaromatic molecules. This work not only offers an effective route to improve the application of fluorescent CPs but also provide one novel probable fluorescence probe for nitroaromatic compounds.

Metal-Organic Framework/Polyvinyl Alcohol Composite Films for Multiple Applications Prepared by Different Methods

The incorporation of different functional fillers has been widely used to improve the properties of polymeric materials. The polyhydroxy structure of PVA with excellent film-forming ability can be easily combined with organic/inorganic multifunctional compounds, and such an interesting combining phenomenon can create a variety of functional materials in the field of materials science. The composite membrane material obtained by combining MOF material with high porosity, specific surface area, and adjustable structure with PVA, a non-toxic and low-cost polymer material with good solubility and biodegradability, can combine the processability of PVA with the excellent performance of porous filler MOFs, solving the problem that the poor machinability of MOFs and the difficulty of recycling limit the practical application of powdered MOFs and improving the physicochemical properties of PVA, maximizing the advantages of the material to develop a wider range of applications. Firstly, we systematically summarize the preparation of MOF/PVA composite membrane materials using solution casting, electrostatic spinning, and other different methods for such excellent properties, in addition to discussing in detail the various applications of MOF/PVA composite membranes in water treatment, sensing, air purification, separation, antibacterials, and so on. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the difficulties that need to be overcome during the film formation process to affect the performance of the composite film and offer encouraging solutions.

Lanthanide Coordination Polymers with Soft-Base Ditopic Bisthiazolate Ligands

In order to prepare the first lanthanide coordination polymers (CPs) based on ditopic sulfide ligands, benzo[1,2-d:4,5-d']bisthiazole-2,6(3H,7H)-dithione (H2L) was used as a linker. The reactions of lanthanide silylamides Ln[N(SiMe3)2]3 (Ln = Nd, Gd, Er, and Yb) with H2L result in the formation of soluble dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) ionic salts [Ln(DMSO)8][L]1.5 [Ln = Nd (1), Gd (2), Er (3), and Yb (4)]. Due to the lack of coordination of anionic ligands, compounds 1, 3, and 4 do not show sensitized metal-centered photoluminescence (PL), while Gd compound 2 shows weak phosphorescence at 77 K. It was found that the heating of 1 in a 1:9 DMSO/1,4-dioxane mixture leads to the formation of large crystals of 2D CP [Nd(DMSO)3L1.5·0.5diox]n (5), where deprotonated dithione H2L plays the role of a ditopic linker. This linker acts as an "antenna" in compound 5, providing an intense near-infrared (NIR) PL of Nd3+ ion upon near-UV and blue-light excitation. The application of a synthetic protocol similar to that of compounds 2-4 led to the formation of amorphous compounds [Ln(DMSO)3L1.5·0.5diox]n [Ln = Gd (6), Er (7), and Yb (8)], whose PL properties significantly differ from those of the parental ionic salts. In the case of Yb polymer 8, the PL excitation spectra are shifted to the red region due to a low-energy ligand-to-metal charge-transfer state. The synthesized compounds 5-8 are the first examples of lanthanide CPs using soft-base ditopic linkers in their structures.

Dual-Functional Eu-Metal-Organic Framework with Ratiometric Fluorescent Broad-Spectrum Sensing of Benzophenone-like Ultraviolet Filters and High Proton Conduction

The construction of attractive dual-functional lanthanide-based metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) with ratiometric fluorescent detection and proton conductivity is significant and challenging. Herein, a three-dimensional (3D) Eu-MOF, namely, [Eu4(HL)2(SBA)4(H2O)6]·9H2O, has been hydrothermally synthesized with a dual-ligand strategy, using (4-carboxypiperidyl)-N-methylenephosphonic acid (H3L = H2O3PCH2-NC5H9-COOH) and 4-sulfobenzoic acid monopotassium salt (KHSBA = KO3SC6H4COOH) as organic linkers. Eu-MOF showed ratiometric fluorescent broad-spectrum sensing of benzophenone-like ultraviolet filters (BP-like UVFs) with satisfactory sensitivity, selectivity, and low limits of detection in water/ethanol (1:1, v/v) solutions and real urine systems. A portable test paper was prepared for the convenience of actual detection. The potential sensing mechanisms were thoroughly analyzed by diversified experiments. The synergistic effect of the forbidden energy transfer from the ligand to Eu3+, the internal filtration effect (IFE), the formation of a complex, and weak interactions between the KHSBA ligand and BP-like UVFs is responsible for the ratiometric sensing effect. Meanwhile, Eu-MOF displayed relatively high proton conductivity of 2.60 × 10-4 S cm-1 at 368 K and 95% relative humidity (RH), making it a potential material for proton conduction. This work provides valuable guidance for the facile and effective design and construction of multifunctional Ln-MOFs with promising performance.

A Lamellar Zn-Based Coordination Polymer Showing Increasing Photoluminescence upon Dehydration

The present study reports on a 2D lamellar coordination polymer (CP) of {[Zn(µ3-pmdc)(H2O)]·H2O}n formula (pmdc = pyrimidine-4,6-dicarboxylate). This CP is synthesized under an appropriate acid-base reaction between the gently mortared reagents in the solid state through a solvent-free procedure that avoids the presence of concomitant byproducts. The X-ray crystal structure reveals the occurrence of Zn2 entities connected through carboxylate groups of pmdc, which behave as triconnected nodes, giving rise to six-membered ring-based layers that are piled up through hydrogen bonding interactions. In addition to a routine physico-chemical characterization, the thermal evolution of the compound has been studied by combining thermogravimetric and thermodiffractometric data. The photoluminescence properties are characterized in the solid state and the processes governing the spectra are described using time-dependent density-functional theory (TD-DFT) with two different approaches employing different program packages. The emissive capacity of the material is further analyzed according to the dehydration and decreasing temperature of the polycrystalline sample.

Advance Progress on Luminescent Sensing of Nitroaromatics by Crystalline Lanthanide-Organic Complexes

Water environment pollution is becoming an increasingly serious issue due to industrial pollutants with the rapid development of modern industry. Among many pollutants, the toxic and explosive nitroaromatics are used extensively in the chemical industry, resulting in environmental pollution of soil and groundwater. Therefore, the detection of nitroaromatics is of great significance to environmental monitoring, citizen life and homeland security. Lanthanide-organic complexes with controllable structural features and excellent optical performance have been rationally designed and successfully prepared and used as lanthanide-based sensors for the detection of nitroaromatics. This review will focus on crystalline luminescent lanthanide-organic sensing materials with different dimensional structures, including the 0D discrete structure, 1D and 2D coordination polymers and the 3D framework. Large numbers of studies have shown that several nitroaromatics could be detected by crystalline lanthanide-organic-complex-based sensors, for instance, nitrobenzene (NB), nitrophenol (4-NP or 2-NP), trinitrophenol (TNP) and so on. The various fluorescence detection mechanisms were summarized and sorted out in the review, which might help researchers or readers to comprehensively understand the mechanism of the fluorescence detection of nitroaromatics and provide a theoretical basis for the rational design of new crystalline lanthanide-organic complex-based sensors.

An iron(III) complex-based supramolecular organic framework (SOF) as a theranostic platform via magnetic resonance imaging-guided chemotherapy

It is crucially important to explore the additional metal-endowed functions of supramolecular organic frameworks (SOFs) for expanding their applications. In this work we have reported the performance of a SOF (designated as Fe(III)-SOF) as a theranostic platform via magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-guided chemotherapy. The Fe(III)-SOF may be used as an MRI contrast agent for cancer diagnosis because the building unit (iron complex) contains high spin iron(III) ions. Additionally, the Fe(III)-SOF may also be used as a drug carrier because it possesses stable internal voids. We loaded doxorubicin (DOX) into the Fe(III)-SOF to obtain a DOX@Fe(III)-SOF. The Fe(III)-SOF showed good loading content (16.3%) and high loading efficiency (65.2%) for DOX. Additionally, the DOX@Fe(III)-SOF had a relatively modest relaxivity value (r₂ = 19.745 mM^-1 s^-1) and exhibited the strongest negative contrast (darkest) at 12 h of post-injection. Furthermore, the DOX@Fe(III)-SOF effectively inhibited tumor growth and showed high anticancer efficiency. In addition, the Fe(III)-SOF was biocompatible and biosafe. Therefore, the Fe(III)-SOF was an excellent theranostic platform and may have potential applications in tumor diagnosis and treatment in the future. We believe that this work will initiate extensive research endeavors not only on the development of SOFs, but also on the construction of theranostic platforms based on SOFs.

Engineering of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) for thermometry

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs ) are excellent candidates for use in chemistry, material sciences and engineering thanks to their interesting qualitative features and potential applications. Quite interestingly, the luminescence of MOFs can be engineered by regulation of the ligand design, metal ion selection and encapsulation of guest molecules within the MOF cavity. Temperature is a very crucial physical parameter and the market share of temperature sensors is rapidly expanding with technology and medicinal advancement. Among the wide variety of available temperature sensors, recently MOFs have emerged as potential temperature sensors with the capacity to precisely measure the temperature. Lanthanide-based thermometry has advantages because of its ratiometric response ability, high quantum yield and photostability, and therefore lanthanide-based MOFs were initially focused on to construct MOF thermometers. As science and technology have gradually changed, it has been observed that with the inclusion of dye, quantum dots, etc. within the MOF cavity, it is possible to develop MOF-based thermometry. This review consolidates the recent advances of MOF-based ratiometric thermometers and their mechanism of energy transfer for determining the temperature (thermal sensitivity and temperature uncertainty). In addition, some fundamental points are also discussed, such as concepts for guiding the design of MOF ratiometric thermometers, thermometric performance and tuning the properties of MOF thermometers.

Ratiometric Luminescent Thermometer Based on the Lanthanide Metal-Organic Frameworks by Thermal Curing

The high-performance optical thermometer probes are of great significance in diverse areas; lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (Ln-MOFs) are a promising candidate for luminescence temperature sensing owing to their unique luminescence properties. However, Ln-MOFs have poor maneuverability and stability in complex environments due to the crystallization properties, which then hinder their application scope. In this work, the Tb-MOFs@TGIC composite was successfully prepared using simple covalent crosslinking through uncoordinated -NH₂ or COOH on Tb-MOFs reacting with the epoxy groups on TGIC {Tb-MOFs = [Tb₂(atpt)₃(phen)₂(H₂O)]_n; H₂atpt = 2-aminoterephthalic acid; phen = 1,10-phenanthroline monohydrate}. After curing, the fluorescence properties, quantum yield, lifetime, and thermal stability of Tb-MOFs@TGIC were remarkably enhanced. Meanwhile, the obtained Tb-MOFs@TGIC composites exhibit excellent temperature sensing properties in the low-temperature (S_r = 6.17% K^-1 at 237 K), physiological temperature (S_r = 4.86% K^-1 at 323 K), or high-temperature range (S_r = 3.88% K^-1 at 393 K) with high sensitivity. In the temperature sensing process, the sensing mode of single emission changed into double emission for ratiometric thermometry owing to the back energy transfer (BenT) from Tb-MOFs to TGIC linkers, and the BenT process enhanced with the increase of temperature, which further improved the accuracy and sensitivity of temperature sensing. Most notably, the temperature-sensing Tb-MOFs@TGIC can be easily coated on the surface of polyimide (PI), glass plate, silicon pellet (SI), and poly(tetrafluoroethylene) plate (PTFE) substrates by a simple spraying method, which also exhibited an excellent sensing property, making it applicable for a wider T range measurement. This is the first example of a postsynthetic Ln-MOF hybrid thermometer operative over a wide temperature range including the physiological and high temperature based on back energy transfer.

A 2D Dy-based metal-organic framework derived from benzothiadiazole: structure and photocatalytic properties

A 2D Dy(III) metal-organic layer (MOL 1) was synthesized under solvothermal conditions. Structural analysis suggests that the Dy(III) ions in each one-dimensional (1D) arrangement are evenly arranged in the form of broken lines. The 1D chains are linked to one another via ligands to form a 2D layer that generates a 2D surface with elongated apertures. The photocatalytic activity study suggests that MOL 1 exhibits good catalytic activity in flavonoids by the formation of an O₂˙^- radical as an intermediate. This is the first reported method of synthesizing flavonoids using chalcones.

Controllable Synthesis of TbIII Metal-Organic Frameworks with Reversible Luminescence Sensing for Benzaldehyde Vapor

Two novel lanthanide metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with the formulas [Tb(bidc)(Hbidc)(H₂O)]_n (JXUST-20) and {[Tb₃(bidc)₄(HCOO)(DMF)]·solvents}_n (JXUST-21) were synthesized based on 2,1,3-benzothiadiazole-4,7-dicarboxylic acid (H₂BTDC) under solvothermal conditions. Interestingly, benzimidazole-4,7-dicarboxylic acid (H₂bidc) was formed in situ using H₂BTDC as the starting material. The self-assembly process of the targeted MOFs with different topological structures can be controlled by the solvents and concentration of the reactants. Luminescence experiments show that JXUST-20 and JXUST-21 exhibit strong yellow-green emission. JXUST-20 and JXUST-21 can selectively sense benzaldehyde (BzH) via a luminescence quenching effect with detection limits of 15.3 and 1.44 ppm, respectively. In order to expand the practical application of MOF materials, mixed-matrix membranes (MMMs) have been constructed by mixing targeted MOFs and poly(methyl methacrylate) in a N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) solution, which can also be used for BzH vapor sensing. Therefore, the first case of MMMs derived from Tb^III MOFs has been developed for the reversible detection of BzH vapor, providing a simple and efficient platform for the future detection of volatile organic compounds.

Recent progress of metal-organic frameworks as sensors in (bio)analytical fields: towards real-world applications

The deployment of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in a plethora of analytical and bioanalytical applications is a growing research area. Their unique properties such as high but tunable porosity, well-defined channels or pores, and ease of post-synthetic modification to incorporate additional functional units make them ideal candidates for sensing applications. This is possible because the interaction of analytes with a MOF often results in a change in its structure, eventually leading to a modification of the intrinsic physicochemical properties of the MOF which is then transduced into a measurable signal. The high porosity allows for the adsorption of analytes very efficiently, while the tunable pore sizes/nature and/or installation of specific recognition groups allow modulating the affinity towards different classes of compounds, which in turn lead to good sensor sensitivity and selectivity, respectively. Some figures are given to illustrate the potential of MOF-based sensors in the most relevant application fields, and future challenges and opportunities to their possible translation from academia (i.e., laboratory testing of MOF sensing properties) to industry (i.e., real-world analytical sensor devices) are critically discussed.

Two Stable Cd-MOFs as Dual-Functional Materials with Luminescent Sensing of Antibiotics and Proton Conduction

Construction and investigation of dual-functional metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with luminescent sensing and proton conduction provide widespread applications in clean energy and environmental monitoring fields. By selecting a phosphonic acid ligand 4-pyridyl-CH₂N(CH₂PO₃H₂)₂ (H₄L) and coligand 2,2'-biimidazole (H₂biim), two cadmium-based MOFs [Cd_1.5(HL)(H₂biim)_0.5] (1) and (H₄biim)_0.5·[Cd₂(L)(H₂biim)Cl] (2) with different structures and properties have been hydrothermally synthesized by controlling reaction temperature. Based on the excellent thermal and chemical stabilities, and good luminescent stabilities in water solution, 1 and 2 can serve as luminescent sensors of chloramphenicol (CAP) with different quenching constant (K_SV) values and detection limits (LODs) in water, simulated environmental system, and real fish water system. Meanwhile, different sensing effects and possible sensing mechanisms are analyzed in detail. Moreover, 1 and 2 can also serve as good proton-conducting materials. The proton conductivities can reach up to 1.41 × 10^-4 S cm^-1 for 1 and 1.02 × 10^-3 S cm^-1 for 2 at 368 K and 95% relative humidity (RH). Among them, 2 shows better luminescent sensing and proton conduction performance than 1, which indicates that different crystal structures have a great impact on the properties of MOFs. Through the discussion of the relationship between structures and properties in detail, the possible reasons for the differences in properties are obtained, which can provide theoretical guidance for the rational design of this kind of dual-functional MOFs in the future.

Lanthanide(III) Ions and 5-Methylisophthalate Ligand Based Coordination Polymers: An Insight into Their Photoluminescence Emission and Chemosensing for Nitroaromatic Molecules

The work presented herein reports on the synthesis, structural and physico-chemical characterization, luminescence properties and luminescent sensing activity of a family of isostructural coordination polymers (CPs) with the general formula [Ln₂(μ₄-5Meip)₃(DMF)]_n (where Ln(III) = Sm (1_Sm), Eu (2_Eu), Gd (3_Gd), Tb (4_Tb) and Yb (5_Yb) and 5Meip = 5-methylisophthalate, DMF = N,N-dimethylmethanamide). Crystal structures consist of 3D frameworks tailored by the linkage between infinite lanthanide(III)-carboxylate rods by means of the tetradentate 5Meip ligands. Photoluminescence measurements in solid state at variable temperatures reveal the best-in-class properties based on the capacity of the 5Meip ligand to provide efficient energy transfers to the lanthanide(III) ions, which brings intense emissions in both the visible and near-infrared (NIR) regions. On the one hand, compound 5_Yb displays characteristic lanthanide-centered bands in the NIR with sizeable intensity even at room temperature. Among the compounds emitting in the visible region, 4_Tb presents a high QY of 63%, which may be explained according to computational calculations. At last, taking advantage of the good performance as well as high chemical and optical stability of 4_Tb in water and methanol, its sensing capacity to detect 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP) among other nitroaromatic-like explosives has been explored, obtaining high detection capacity (with K_sv around 10⁵ M^-1), low limit of detection (in the 10^-6-10^-7 M) and selectivity among other molecules (especially in methanol).

Fluorescent Eu3+/Tb3+ Metal-Organic Frameworks for Ratiometric Temperature Sensing Regulated by Ligand Energy

This work presents three series of Eu/Tb metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) containing benzophenone-4,4'-dicarboxylic acid (H₂BPNDC), 4,4'-dicarboxydiphenyl ether (H₂OBA), and terephthalic acid (H₂BDC) as the ligands. Eu/Tb MOFs have the same structural features in that their 3D frameworks are simplified as 2,3,10-connected {4².6}₂{4⁶.6¹⁸.8¹⁹.10²}{4}₂ topological networks. The solid-state fluorescence spectra of three Eu/Tb MOF series are attributed to the combined emissions of ⁵D₀ → ⁷F_J (J = 1-4) transitions in Eu³⁺ and ⁵D₄ → ⁷F_J (J = 6-5) transitions in Tb³⁺. The n_Eu:n_Tb of Eu/Tb MOFs is optimized as 1:69 based on the relationships between I_Tb(545)/I_Eu(614) and n_Eu:n_Tb; that is, Eu_0.0143Tb_0.9857-L (L = BPNDC^2-, OBA^2-, and BDC^2-) were selected to carry out the following temperature (T)-sensing tests. The fluorescence mechanism of Eu_0.0143Tb_0.9857-L can be explained by a ligand-to-metal charge transfer combined with an intermetallic Tb³⁺ → Eu³⁺ energy transfer. The T-dependent fluorescence indicates linear relationships with sensitivities of 1.85% K^-1 for Eu_0.0143Tb_0.9857-BPNDC, 6.49% K^-1 for Eu_0.0143Tb_0.9857-OBA, and 0.28% K^-1 for Eu_0.0143Tb_0.9857-BDC. The influence of T on the lowest excited triplet energy levels (T1 values) of the ligands reveals that the ligand energy regulation impacts their fluorescence properties, including the sensitivity, fluorescence quenching rate, quantum yield, and fluorescence lifetime. This shows that Eu_0.0143Tb_0.9857-BPNDC is sufficiently sensitive to T, making it applicable in noncontact T measurements.

A novel 2D metal–organic framework probe: a highly sensitive and visual fluorescent sensor for Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions

A novel 2D MOF Tb-DBA was constructed. Tb-DBA could detect Al3+, Cr3+ and Fe3+ ions rapidly, sensitively, selectively, reversibly and visually. Tb-DBA represents a promising material for the quick detection of metal ions in aqueous solution.
