Novel magnetic nickel ferrite nanoparticles modified with poly(aniline-co-o-toluidine) for the removal of hazardous 2,4-dichlorophenol pollutant from aqueous solutions

A novel potentiometric screen-printed electrode based on crown ethers/nano manganese oxide/Nafion composite for trace level determination of copper ion in biological fluids

Copper levels in biological fluids are associated with Wilson's, Alzheimer's, Menke's, and Parkinson's diseases, making them good biochemical markers for these diseases. This study introduces a miniaturized screen-printed electrode (SPE) for the potentiometric determination of copper(II) in some biological fluids. Manganese(III) oxide nanoparticles (Mn2O3-NPs), dispersed in Nafion, are drop-casted onto a graphite/PET substrate, serving as the ion-to-electron transducer material. The solid-contact material is then covered by a selective polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane incorporated with 18-crown-6 as a neutral ion carrier for the selective determination of copper(II) ions. The proposed electrode exhibits a Nernstian response with a slope of 30.2 ± 0.3 mV/decade (R2 = 0.999) over the linear concentration range 5.2 × 10-9 - 6.2 × 10-3 mol/l and a detection limit of 1.1 × 10-9 mol/l (69.9 ng/l). Short-term potential stability is evaluated using constant current chronopotentiometry (CP) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). A significant improvement in the electrode capacitance (91.5 μF) is displayed due to the use of Mn2O3-NPs as a solid contact. The presence of Nafion, with its high hydrophobicity properties, eliminates the formation of the thin water layer, facilitating the ion-to-electron transduction between the sensing membrane and the conducting substrate. Additionally, it enhances the adhesion of the polymeric sensing membrane to the solid-contact material, preventing membrane delamination and increasing the electrode's lifespan. The high selectivity, sensitivity, and potential stability of the proposed miniaturized electrode suggests its use for the determination of copper(II) ions in human blood serum and milk samples. The results obtained agree fairly well with data obtained by flameless atomic absorption spectrometry.

Enhanced adsorption of phenolic compounds using biomass-derived high surface area activated carbon: Isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics

The progress of industrial and agricultural pursuits, along with the release of inadequately treated effluents especially phenolic pollutant, has amplified the pollution load on environment. These organic compounds pose considerable challenges in both drinking water and wastewater systems, given their toxicity, demanding high oxygen and limited biodegradability. Thus, developing an eco-friendly, low-cost and highly efficient adsorbent to treat the organic pollutants has become an important task. The present investigation highlights development of a novel adsorbent (CFPAC) by activation of Cassia fistula pod shell for the purpose of removing phenol and 2,4-dichlorophnenol (2,4-DCP). The significant operational factors (dosage, pH, concentration, temperature, speed) were also investigated. The factors such as pH = 2 and T = 20°C were found to be significant at 1.6 g/L and 0.6 g/L dosage for phenol and 2,4-DCP respectively. Batch experiments were further conducted to study isotherms, kinetic and thermodynamics studies for the removal of phenol and 2,4-DCP. The activated carbon was characterised as mesoporous (specific surface area 1146 m2/g, pore volume = 0.8628 cc/g), amorphous and pHPZC = 6.4. At optimum conditions, the maximum sorption capacity for phenol and 2,4-DCP were 183.79 mg/g and 374.4 mg/g respectively. The adsorption isotherm was better conformed to Redlich Peterson isotherm (phenol) and Langmuir isotherm (2,4-DCP). The kinetic study obeyed pseudo-second-order type behaviour for both the pollutants with R2 > 0.999. The thermodynamic studies and the value of isosteric heat of adsorption for both the pollutants suggested that the adsorption reaction was dominated by physical adsorption (ΔHx < 80 kJ/mol). Further, the whole process was feasible, exothermic and spontaneous in nature. The overall studies suggested that the activated carbon synthesised from Cassia fistula pods can be a promising adsorbent for phenolic compounds.

Inhibition of biofilm, quorum-sensing, and swarming motility in pathogenic bacteria by magnetite, manganese ferrite, and nickel ferrite nanoparticles

Resistance to antibiotics by pathogenic bacteria constitutes a health burden and nanoparticles (NPs) are being developed as alternative and multipurpose antimicrobial substances. Magnetite (Fe3O4 np), manganese ferrite (MnFe2O4 np) and nickel ferrite (NiFe3O4 np) NPs were synthesized and characterized using thermogravimetric analysis, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transformed infra-red, and X-ray diffraction. The minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) ranged from 0.625 to 10 mg/mL against gram-positive (Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Enterococcus faecalis ATCC 29212), gram-negative (Escherichia coli ATCC 25922 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 27853) and candida (Candida albicans ATCC 10239 and Candida tropicalis ATCC 13803) species. The NPs exhibited violacein inhibition against Chromobacterium violaceum CV12472 of 100% at MIC and reduced to 27.2% ± 0.8% for magnetite NPs, 12.7% ± 0.3% for manganese ferrite NPs and 43.1% ± 0.2% for nickel ferrite NPs at MIC/4. Quorum-sensing (QS) inhibition zones against C. violaceum CV026 were 12.5 ±0.6 mm for Fe3O4 np, 09.1 ± 0.5 mm for MnFe3O4 NP and 17.0 ± 1.2 mm for NiFe3O4 np. The NPs inhibited swarming motility against P. aeruginosa PA01 and biofilm against six pathogens and the gram-positive biofilms were more susceptible than the gram-negative ones. The NiFe2O4 np had highest antibiofilm activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria as well as highest QS inhibition while Fe3O4 NP had highest biofilm inhibition against candida species. The synthesized magnetic NPs can be used in developing anti-virulence drugs which reduce pathogenicity of bacteria as well as resistance.

Fabrication of magnetic MnFe2O4@HL composites with an in situ Fenton-like reaction for enhancing tetracycline degradation

Novel magnetic MnFe2O4@honey locust-derived carbon (MnFe2O4@HL) composites were synthesized via an in-situ hydrothermal precipitation method, and were characterized as an excellent Fenton-like catalyst for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Results showed that the vast majority of TC was mineralized in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2)/MnFe2O4@HL system after 120 min of reaction time with 92.3% of removal efficiency and the removal of 71.3% of total organic carbon (TOC). Systematic characterization approaches including scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM) were introduced to reveal the microstructure and properties of magnetic MnFe2O4@HL composites. Hydroxyl radicals (•OH) were identified as the major reactive oxygen species (ROS) via the quenching experiments and electron spin resonance (ESR) analysis, while superoxide radicals (·O2-) played a negligible role. The dual cycles of both Fe3+/Fe2+ and Mn3+/Mn2+ were significant enhanced through the bimetallic redox effect and the electron transfer effect of the carbon-based functional group, accelerating the generation of •OH. The removal of TC was still up to 79.3% after five reuses of magnetic composites, demonstrating the MnFe2O4@HL with excellent stability and reuse performance. The influence of various experimental control conditions involving initial pH, catalyst and H2O2 dosage, temperature, as well as common anions (Cl-, NO3-, and HCO3-) on the degradation of TC were finally evaluated. This study provides an efficient in-situ generation method of emerging magnetic materials, and systematically reveals its mechanism of homogeneous Fenton-like catalysis, which shows promising applications for the degradation of environmental contaminants.

Spinel ferrite nanoparticles as potential materials in chlorophenol removal from wastewater

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including chlorophenols (CPs) are increasing in water effluents, creating serious problems for both aquatic and terrestrial lives. Several research attempts have considered the removal of CPs by functionalised nanomaterials as adsorbents and catalysts. Besides the unique crystal structure, spinel ferrite nanomaterials (SFNs) own interesting optical and magnetic properties that give them the potential to be utilised in the removal of different types of CPs. In this review, we highlighted the recent research work that focused on the application of SFNs in the removal of different CP substances based on the number of chlorine atom attached to the phenolic compound. We have also discussed the structure and properties of SFN along with their numerous characterisation tools. We demonstrated the importance of identifying the structure, surface area, porosity, optical properties, etc. in the efficiency of the SFN during the CP removal process. The reviewed research efforts applied photocatalysis, wet peroxide oxidation (WPO), persulfate activated oxidation and adsorption. The studies presented different paths of enhancing the SFN ability to remove the CPs including doping (ion substitution), oxide composite structure and polymer composite structure. Experimental parameters such as temperature, dosage of CPs and SFN structure have shown to have a major effect in the CP removal efficiency. More attention is needed to investigate the different properties of SFN that can be tailored through different techniques and expected to have major role in the removal mechanism of CPs.

Influence of Lanthanum Doping on the Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Capacities of Mg0.33Ni0.33Co0.33Fe2O4 Nanoparticles

The increase in environmental pollution, especially water pollution, has intensified the requirement for new strategies for the treatment of water sources. Furthermore, the improved properties of nano-ferrites permit their usage in wastewater treatment. In this regard, novel Mg0.33Ni0.33Co0.33LaxFe2−xO4 nanoparticles (NPs), where 0.00≤x≤0.08, were synthesized to test their photocatalytic, antibacterial and antibiofilm activities. The structural and optical properties of the prepared NPs were investigated by X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), UV-Vis spectroscopy and photoluminescence (PL) analysis. As La content increases, the bandgap energy increases, whereas the particle size decreases. The photocatalytic activity of the prepared NPs is evaluated by the degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under sunlight irradiation. Superior activity is exhibited by Mg0.33Ni0.33Co0.33La0.01Fe1.99O4 NPs. The influence of catalyst dosage, pH, temperature and addition of graphene (Gr) on the photodegradation reaction was studied. Increasing the pH and temperature improved the rate of the photodegradation reaction. The antibacterial and antibiofilm activities of the NPs were assessed against Escherichia coli, Leclercia adecarboxylata, Staphylococcus aureus and Enterococcus faecium. Mg0.33Ni0.33Co0.33Fe2O4 NPs inhibited bacterial growth. They had bacteriostatic activity on all isolates, with a greater effect on Gram-positive bacteria. All tested nano-ferrites had significant antibiofilm activities against some biofilms.

Efficient removal of noxious methylene blue and crystal violet dyes at neutral conditions by reusable montmorillonite/NiFe2O4@amine-functionalized chitosan composite

The jeopardy of the synthetic dyes effluents on human health and the environment has swiftly aggravated, threatening human survival. Hence, sustained studies have figured out the most acceptable way to eliminate this poisonous contaminant. Thereby, our investigation aimed to fabricate montmorillonite/magnetic NiFe₂O₄@amine-functionalized chitosan (MMT-mAmCs) composite as a promising green adsorbent to remove the cationic methylene blue (MB) and crystal violet (CV) dyes from the wastewater in neutral conditions. Interestingly, MMT-mAmCs composite carries high negative charges at a wide pH range from 4 to 11 as clarified from zeta potential measurements, asserting its suitability to adsorb the cationic contaminants. In addition, the experimental study confirmed that the optimum pH to adsorb both MB and CV was pH 7, inferring the ability of MMT-mAmCs to adsorb both cationic dyes in simple process conditions. Furthermore, the ferromagnetic behavior of the MMT-mAmCs composite is additional merit to our adsorbent that provides facile, fast, and flawless separation. Notably, the as-fabricated composite revealed an auspicious adsorbability towards the adsorptive removal of MB and CV, since the maximum adsorption capacity of MB and CV were 137 and 118 mg/g, respectively. Moreover, the isotherm and kinetic investigatins depicted that the adsorption of both cationic dyes fitted Langmuir and Pseudo 2nd order models, respectively. Besides, the advanced adsorbent preserved satisfactory adsorption characteristics with maximal removal efficacy exceeding 87% after reuse for ten consecutive cycles. More importantly, MMT-mAmCs efficiently adsorbed MB and CV from real agricultural water, Nile river water and wastewater samples at the neutral pH medium, reflecting its potentiality to be a superb reusable candidate for adsorptive removal cationic pollutants from their aquatic media.
