Microporous carbon in the selective electro-oxidation of molecular biomarkers: uric acid, ascorbic acid, and dopamine

Copper(II) phthalocyanine as an electrocatalytic electrode for cathodic detection of urinary tryptophan

Herein, we introduce a novel method for tryptophan detection via a reduction reaction facilitated by its interaction with a copper(II) phthalocyanine (CuPc) electrocatalytic electrode. This method addresses challenges associated with the susceptibility of the oxidation response to interference from various species when measuring tryptophan in bodily fluids. The reduction currents exhibit a linear increase with tryptophan concentrations in two ranges: 0.0013-0.10 mM and 0.10-1.20 mM, with the sensitivities of 14.7 ± 0.5 μA mM-1 and 3.5 ± 0.1 μA mM-1, respectively. The limit of detection (LOD, 3SB/m) is determined to be 0.39 μM. The sensor exhibits excellent reproducibility, with the relative standard deviation of <5%. Application of the sensor to authentic urine samples yields a % recovery of 101 ± 4%.

Methylene blue molecularly imprinted polymer for melatonin determination in urine and saliva samples

A highly sensitive and rapid electrochemical sensor was developed for detecting melatonin using a molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) with methylene blue as the functional monomer and melatonin as the template. The MIP was synthesized via a simple electropolymerization process that did not require an initiating reagent. The sensor demonstrated good selectivity for melatonin against common interferences such as lactate, cytosine, cytidine, urea, ascorbic acid, creatine, creatinine, serotonin, and tryptophan. Melatonin detection was achieved at a potential of 0.60 V vs. Ag/AgCl with a sensitivity of 138.8 ± 4.7 µA µM‒1 in the linear range 0.097 - 200 µM and a limit of detection of 29 nM (3SB/m). The sensor exhibited excellent reproducibility and repeatability for both within (intra) and between (inter) electrodes (%RSD < 3% for n = 3). The sensor was applied to authentic urine and saliva samples with recoveries of 103 ± 1% and 102 ± 1%, respectively.

Electrochemically Activatable Liquid Organic Hydrogen Carriers and Their Applications

Hydrogen has been chosen as an environmentally benign energy source to replace fossil-fuel-based energy systems. Since hydrogen is difficult to store and transport in its gaseous phase, thermochemical liquid organic hydrogen carriers (LOHCs) have been developed as one of the alternative technologies. However, the high temperature and pressure requirements of thermochemical LOHC systems result in huge energy waste and impracticality. This Perspective proposes electrochemical (EC)-LOHCs capable of more efficient, safer, and lower temperature and pressure hydrogen storage/utilization. To enable this technology, several EC-LOHC candidates such as isopropanol, phenolic compounds, and organic acids are described, and the latest research trends and design concepts of related homo/hetero-based electrocatalysts are discussed. In addition, we propose efficient fuel-cell-based systems that implement electrochemical (de)hydrogenation of EC-LOHCs and present prospects for relevant technologies.

A Carbon Paste Electrode Modified by Bentonite and l-Cysteine for Simultaneous Determination of Ascorbic and Uric Acids: Application in Biological Fluids

A novel modification of a paste carbon electrode by Bentonite (Bent) and l-Cysteine (l-Cyst) was carried out for uric acid (UA) and ascorbic acid (AA) detection and quantification. Morphological and compositional characterization of the electrode surface were carried out using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopic analysis (EDS). Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV) techniques were used to analyze UA and AA. The obtained sensor shows a good stability, sensibility, selectivity, and regeneration ability. Accordingly, the limit of detection (LOD) is found to be 0.031 μm and 9.6 μm for UA and AA, respectively. A good linearity in the range of 0.1 to 100 μm for UA and 10 to 1000 μm for AA was obtained. The peak-to-peak separation of UA-AA (ΔEUA-AA ) was determined to be 330 mV. In addition, the sensor is applied successfully to monitor UA and AA in serum samples.

Microporous carbon for fast and simple electrochemical detection of imidacloprid insecticide in fruit and water samples

Herein, a fast and sensitive electrochemical sensor was developed for imidacloprid detection using low-cost disposable microporous carbon screen-printed electrodes. The electrochemical behaviour of imidacloprid at the microporous material was investigated in detail. The developed sensor allowed imidacloprid detection in the linear range of 0.00-1.00 mM with a sensitivity of 14.43 ± 0.42 μA mM^-1 and a detection limit of 2.54 μM (3s _B/m). The sensor showed excellent selectivity and high tolerance to possible interference from other tested insecticides and ions. Excellent repeatability (3.42%, n = 3) and reproducibility (2.23%, n = 3) were demonstrated. Application of the sensor in various fruit and water samples without any treatment showed 96.2-103.0% recoveries. The developed sensor further revealed that the most effective method for removing imidacloprid residue from fruit samples was via washing with a mixture of 5% w/v NaCl and 5% w/v bicarbonate at 40 °C.
