Gelation by small molecules is a topic of enormous importance in catalysis, nanomaterials, drug delivery, and pharmaceutical crystallization. The mechanism by which gelators self-organize into a fibrous gel network is poorly understood. Herein, we describe the crystal structures and gelation properties of a library of bis(urea) compounds and show, via molecular dynamics simulations, how gelator aggregation progresses from a continuous pattern of supramolecular motifs to a homogeneous fiber network. Our model suggests that lamellae with asymmetric surfaces scroll into uniform unbranched fibrils, while sheets with symmetric surfaces undergo stacking to form crystals. The self-assembly of asymmetric lamellae is associated with specific molecular features, such as the presence of narrow and flexible end groups with high packing densities, and likely represents a general mechanism for the formation of small-molecule gels.

Stimuli-responsive and self-healing supramolecular Zn(II)-guanosine metal-organic gel for Schottky barrier diode application

Spontaneous formation of a supramolecular metal-organic hydrogel using unsubstituted guanosine as a ligand and Zn2+ ions is reported. Guanosine, in the presence of NaOH, self-assembled into a stable G-quadruplex structure, which underwent crosslinking through Zn2+ ions to afford a stable hydrogel. The gel has been characterized using several spectroscopic as well as microscopic studies. The hydrogel demonstrated excellent stimuli responsiveness towards various chemicals and pH. Furthermore, the gel exhibited intrinsic thixotropic behavior and showed self-healing and injectable properties. The optical properties of the Zn-guanosine metallo-hydrogel suggested a semiconducting nature of the gel, which has been exploited for fabricating a thin film device based on a Schottky diode interface between metal and a semiconductor. The fabricated device shows excellent charge transport characteristics and linear rectifying behavior. The findings are likely to pave the way for newer research in the area of soft electronic devices fabricated using materials synthesized by employing simple biomolecules.

Unlocking the Power of Multicatalytic Synergistic Transformation: toward Environmentally Adaptable Organohydrogel

A sustainable and efficient multicatalytic chemical transformation approach is devised for the development of all-biobased environmentally adaptable polymers and gels with multifunctional properties. The catalytic system, utilizing Lignin aluminum nanoparticles (AlNPs)-aluminum ions (Al3+ ), synergistically combines multiple catalytic cycles to create robust, mechanically stable, and versatile organohydrogels. Single catalytic cycles alone fail to achieve desired results, highlighting the importance of cooperatively combining different cycles for successful outcomes. The transformation involves free radical crosslinking, reversible quinone-catechol reactions, and an autocatalytic mechanism, resulting in a dual crosslinking strategy that incorporates both covalent and ionic crosslinking. This approach creates a dynamic gel system with combined energy dissipation and storage mechanisms. The engineered organohydrogels demonstrate vital multifunctionalities such as good thermal stability, self-healing, and adhesive properties, flame-retardancy, mechanical resilience and durability, conductivity, viscoelastic properties, environmental adaptability, and resistance to extreme conditions such as freezing and drying. The developed catalytic technology and resulting gels hold significant potential for applications in flexible electronics, energy storage, actuators, and sensors.

Supramolecular gelator functionalized liquid metal nanodroplets as lubricant additive for friction reduction and anti-wear

In this work, dopamine n-butenylamide (DBA) modified GLM nanodroplets were prepared via directional ultrasound of bulk liquid metal in ethanol aqueous solution as well as DBA self-assembly, followed by grafting with urea-based gelators via radical polymerization to obtain GLM-based supramolecular gelators (Gelator@GLM). The grafting gelators can impart their good compatibility between the GLM nanodroplets and the base oil, so that the Gelator@GLM nanodroplets can be dispersed in the base oil uniformly and stably for more than 3 weeks. Meanwhile, the tribological properties of Gelator@GLM nanodroplets was significantly enhanced, with a reduction of coefficient of friction (COF) and the wear volume of 41.18% and 92.13%, respectively, when compared with the base oil. Furthermore, Gelator@GLM additives exhibited stable lubrication performance even under variable temperature and frequency conditions. The synergistic effect of GLM nanodroplets and the gels generating a physical adsorption film and a chemically protective film (containing iron and chromium oxides, nitrides and carbides) can be credited with the improved tribological performance.

Pillararene-Based Supramolecular Polymers for Adsorption and Separation

Supramolecular polymers have attracted increasing attention in recent years due to their perfect combination of supramolecular chemistry and traditional polymer chemistry. The design and synthesis of macrocycles have driven the rapid development of supramolecular chemistry and polymer science. Pillar[n]arenes, a new generation of macrocyclic compounds possessing unique pillar-shaped structures, nano-sized cavities, multi-functionalized groups, and excellent host-guest complexation abilities, are promising candidates to construct supramolecular polymer materials with enhanced properties and functionalities. This review summarizes recent progress in the design and synthesis of pillararene-based supramolecular polymers (PSPs) and illustrates their diverse applications as adsorption and separation materials. All performances are evaluated and analyzed in terms of efficiency, selectivity, and recyclability. Typically, PSPs can be categorized into three typical types according to their topologies, including linear, cross-linked, and hybrid structures. The advances made in the area of functional supramolecular polymeric adsorbents formed by new pillararene derivatives are also described in detail. Finally, the remaining challenges and future perspectives of PSPs for separation-based materials science are discussed. This review will inspire researchers in different fields and stimulate creative designs of supramolecular polymeric materials based on pillararenes and other macrocycles for effective adsorption and separation of a variety of targets.

Hydrogels with Reversible Crosslinks for Improved Localised Stem Cell Retention: A Review

Successful stem cell applications could have a significant impact on the medical field, where many lives are at stake. However, the translation of stem cells to the clinic could be improved by overcoming challenges in stem cell transplantation and in vivo retention at the site of tissue damage. This review aims to showcase the most recent insights into developing hydrogels that can deliver, retain, and accommodate stem cells for tissue repair. Hydrogels can be used for tissue engineering, as their flexibility and water content makes them excellent substitutes for the native extracellular matrix. Moreover, the mechanical properties of hydrogels are highly tuneable, and recognition moieties to control cell behaviour and fate can quickly be introduced. This review covers the parameters necessary for the physicochemical design of adaptable hydrogels, the variety of (bio)materials that can be used in such hydrogels, their application in stem cell delivery and some recently developed chemistries for reversible crosslinking. Implementing physical and dynamic covalent chemistry has resulted in adaptable hydrogels that can mimic the dynamic nature of the extracellular matrix.

High-Performance Recognition, Cell-Imaging, and Efficient Removal of Carbon Monoxide toward a Palladium-Mediated Fluorescent Sensing Platform

Novel high-performance fluorescent approaches have always significant demand for room-temperature detection of carbon monoxide (CO), which is highly toxic even at low concentration levels and is not easy to recognize due to its colorless and odorless nature. In this paper, we constructed a palladium-mediated fluorescence turn-on sensing platform (TPANN-Pd) for the recognition of CO at room temperature, revealing simultaneously quick response speed (<30 s), excellent selectivity, superior sensitivity, and low detection limit (∼160 nM for CORM-3, ∼1.7 ppb for CO vapor). Moreover, rapid detection and efficient removal (24%) from the air by naked-eye vision has been successfully realized based on TPANN-Pd supramolecular gels. Furthermore, the developed sensing platform was elucidated with low cytotoxicity and high cellular uptake, and it was successfully applied to CO imaging in living cells, providing real-time monitoring of potential CO-involved reactions in biological systems.

Coherent Loading-Deloading Mechanism in Polymeric Nanohybrid Network Structures

Physically cross-linked gels have unique advantages of repeated swelling and shrinking of network structures, where the stability of gels at the swelled phase, particularly under ionic conditions, is extremely critical. In this study, it has been shown that functionalized nanofillers and polar solvents can increase the network densities of physically cross-linked gels with higher dimensional stability by increasing the polar and electrostatic interactions. The characteristic nonbonded interactions of CNTs with ionic solvents have been utilized for the controlled swelling of toughened double-network gels as the function of pH and time. The swelling of the overall gel morphology is found to be important for the release of analytes; however, the functional cross-sectional sites in the nanohybrids hold the key for desorption kinetics. The selection of interactive functional moieties in the nanohybrids and analytes has led to the development of highly efficient and controlled release media. The electrostatic interaction of analytes with functionally and dimensionally stable gels with controlled porosity indicates a clear structure-property correlation, which could be exploited to design and fabricate efficient drug delivery vehicles and rapid surface decontaminants.
