Regulation of the nanostructures self-assembled from an amphiphilic azobenzene homopolymer: influence of initial concentration and solvent solubility parameter

Multi-Responsive Peptide-Based Ultrathin Nanosheets Prepared by a Horizontal Monolayer Assembly

In this study, peptide-based self-assembled nanosheets with a thickness of approximately 1 nm were prepared using a hierarchical covalent physical fabrication strategy. The covalent alternating polymerization of helical peptide E3 with an azobenzene (AZO) structure yielded copolymers CoP(E3-AZO), which physically self-assembled into ultrathin nanosheets in an unanticipated two-dimensional horizontal monolayer arrangement. This special monolayer arrangement enabled the thickness of the nanosheets to be equal to the cross-sectional diameter of a single linear copolymer, which is a rare phenomenon. Molecular dynamics simulations suggested that the synergistic effect of multiple molecular interactions drives the self-assembly of CoP(E3-AZO) into nanosheets and that various methods, including phototreatment, pH adjustment, the addition of additives, and introduction of cosolvents, can alter the molecular interactions and modulate the self-assembly of CoP(E3-AZO), yielding diverse nanostructures. Remarkably, the ultrathin nanosheets selectively inhibited cancer cells at certain concentrations.

Regulating the Chiroptical Expression of Aggregated Solvophobic Core by Solvophilic Segments

The investigation of chiral supramolecular stacking is of essential significance for the understanding of the origin of homochirality in nature. Unlike structurally well-defined amphiphilic liposomes, it remains unclear whether the solvophilic segments of the amphiphilic block copolymer play a decisive role in the construction of asymmetric superstructures. Herein, insights are presented into the stacking patterns and morphological regulation in azobenzene-containing block copolymer assemblies solely by modulating the solvophilic chain length. The solvophilic poly(methacrylic acid) (PMAA) segments of different molecular weights could cause multi-mode chirality inversions involving stacking transitions between intra-chain π-π stacking, inter-chain H- and J-aggregation. Furthermore, the length of the solvophilic PMAA also affects the morphology of the chiral supramolecular assemblies; rice grain-like micelles, worms, nanofibers, floccules, and lamellae can be prepared at different solvophilic-solvophobic balance. The comprehensive mechanism is collectively revealed by utilizing various measurement methods, such as including circular dichroism (CD), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), and wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD). This study highlights the critical importance of fully dissolved solvophilic segments for the chiroptical regulation of the aggregated core, providing new insights into the arrangement of chiral supramolecular structures in polymer systems.

Manipulation of Bowl-Shaped Nanoparticles Self-Assembled from a Bipyridine Pendant Containing Homopolymer

The morphological control and transformation of soft nanomaterials are critical for their physical and chemical properties, which can be achieved by dynamically regulating the hydrophilicity of amphiphilic polymers during self-assembly. Herein, an amphiphilic homopolymer poly(N-(2,2'-bipyridine)-4-acrylamide) (PBPyAA) with bipyridine pendants is synthesized, and the effect of various parameters including initial concentration, temperature, pH, and metal ion coordination on the self-assembly behavior and morphology of the assemblies is investigated. Upon changing the initial concentration of PBPyAA, bowl-shaped nanoparticles (BNPs) with precisely controlled diameter, opening size, and thickness are obtained. With the decrease of pH of the solution, the negatively charged surface of BNPs transforms to a positively charged state. Furthermore, the addition of divalent metal ions (Co2+, Mn2+, and Zn2+) induces the transformation of BNPs to vesicles and giant vesicles. The effect of the above factors on the morphology of the assemblies is essential to change the hydrophilicity of PBPyAA dynamically, leading to variation of the local viscosity during self-assembly. Overall, manipulation of the structural parameters of BNPs and transformation of BNPs to vesicles are achieved, providing fresh insights for the precise control of the morphologies of soft nanomaterials.

Physically and Chemically Compartmentalized Polymersomes for Programmed Delivery and Biological Applications

Multicompartment polymersomes (MCPs) refer to polymersomes that not only contain one single compartment, either in the membrane or in the internal cavity, but also mimic the compartmentalized structure of living cells, attracting much attention in programmed delivery and biological applications. The investigation of MCPs may promote the application of soft nanomaterials in biomedicine. This Review seeks to highlight the recent advances of the design principles, synthetic strategies, and biomedical applications of MCPs. The compartmentalization types including chemical, physical, and hybrid compartmentalization are discussed. Subsequently, the design and controlled synthesis of MCPs by the self-assembly of amphiphilic polymers, double emulsification, coprecipitation, microfluidics and particle assembly, etc. are summarized. Furthermore, the diverse applications of MCPs in programmed delivery of various cargoes and biological applications including cancer therapy, antimicrobials, and regulation of blood glucose levels are highlighted. Finally, future perspectives of MCPs from the aspects of controlled synthesis and applications are proposed.

Polymeric Bowl-Shaped Nanoparticles: Hollow Structures with a Large Opening on the Surface

Polymeric bowl-shaped nanoparticles (BNPs) are anisotropic hollow structures with large openings on the surface, which have shown advantages such as high specific area and efficient encapsulation, delivery and release of large-sized cargoes on demand compared to solid nanoparticles or closed hollow structures. Several strategies have been developed to prepare BNPs based on either template or template-free methods. For instance, despite the widely used self-assembly strategy, alternative methods including emulsion polymerization, swelling and freeze-drying of polymeric spheres, and template-assisted approaches have also been developed. It is attractive but still challenging to fabricate BNPs due to their unique structural features. However, there is still no comprehensive summary of BNPs up to now, which significantly hinders the further development of this field. In this review, the recent progress of BNPs will be highlighted from the perspectives of design strategies, preparation methods, formation mechanisms, and emerging applications. Moreover, the future perspectives of BNPs will also be proposed.

Efficient Removal of Pb(Ⅱ) by Highly Porous Polymeric Sponges Self-Assembled from a Poly(Amic Acid)

Lead (II) (Pb(II)) is widespread in water and very harmful to creatures, and the efficient removal of it is still challenging. Therefore, we prepared a novel sponge-like polymer-based absorbent (poly(amic acid), PAA sponge) with a highly porous structure using a straightforward polymer self-assembly strategy for the efficient removal of Pb(II). In this study, the effects of the pH, dosage, adsorption time and concentration of Pb(II) on the adsorption behavior of the PAA sponge are investigated, revealing a rapid adsorption process with a removal efficiency up to 89.0% in 2 min. Based on the adsorption thermodynamics, the adsorption capacity increases with the concentration of Pb(II), reaching a maximum adsorption capacity of 609.7 mg g^-1 according to the Langmuir simulation fitting. Furthermore, the PAA sponge can be efficiently recycled and the removal efficiency of Pb(II) is still as high as 93% after five adsorption-desorption cycles. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy analyses reveal that the efficient adsorption of Pb(II) by the PAA sponge is mainly due to the strong interaction between nitrogen-containing functional groups and Pb(II), and the coordination of oxygen atoms is also involved. Overall, we propose a polymer self-assembly strategy to easily prepare a PAA sponge for the efficient removal of Pb(II) from water.

Facile Preparation of Cobalt Nanoparticles Encapsulated Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Sponge for Efficient Oxygen Reduction Reaction

The facile preparation of non-noble metal nanoparticle loaded carbon nanomaterials is promising for efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) electrocatalysis. Herein, a facile preparation strategy is proposed to prepare nitrogen-doped carbon sponge loaded with fine cobalt nanoparticles by the direct pyrolysis of the cobalt ions adsorbed polymeric precursor. The polymeric sponge precursor with continuous framework and high porosity is formed by the self-assembly of a poly(amic acid). Taking advantage of the negatively charged surface and porous structure, cobalt ions can be efficiently adsorbed into the polymeric sponge. After pyrolysis, fine cobalt nanoparticles covered by carbon layers are formed, while the sponge-like structure of the precursor is also well-preserved in order to give cobalt nanoparticles loaded nitrogen-doped carbon sponges (Co/CoO@NCS) with a high loading content of 44%. The Co/CoO@NCS exhibits promising catalytic activity toward ORR with a half-wave potential of 0.830 V and a limiting current density of 4.71 mA cm^-2. Overall, we propose a facile polymer self-assembly strategy to encapsulate transition metal nanoparticles with high loading content on a nitrogen-doped carbon sponge for efficient ORR catalysis.
