Machine-learning-accelerated screening of single metal atoms anchored on MnPS3 monolayers as promising bifunctional oxygen electrocatalysts

Is Fe the Most Active Site for Fe/N-Doped Graphdiyne?

We performed a systematic study on the activity of pristine, Fe-doped, N-doped, and Fe/N-codoped graphdiyne (GDY) for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs). We found that the pristine GDY has a high overpotential because of the weak binding of the intermediates. The sp-hybridized N-doped GDY enhances the binding of the intermediates at the adjacent sp-hybridized C site, which greatly enhances its ORR activities with a low overpotential of 0.45 V. On the other hand, on Fe-doped GDY, the binding of the intermediates at the Fe site and its neighboring C sites becomes too strong, while the C site at the second nearest acetylene chain becomes the most active site with an overpotential of 0.43 V. In the case of Fe and N codoping, Fe and the C sites near Fe and N still bind the intermediates too strongly, and the most active site is located at the C with an optimal distance. The binding energy of OH* is an activity descriptor for Fe- and/or N-doped GDY. Based on the machine learning analysis of ΔG(OH*), both the properties of the active center (electronic and geometric properties) and its environment, especially the latter, play important roles in determining its activity. The scaling relation analysis and volcano plot suggest that Fe and N doping enhance the binding of the intermediates to different extents, and the C atom, which is bonded neither to N nor to Fe atom, with an optimal binding strength, becomes the most active site.

Theoretical Insights on the Charge State and Bifunctional OER/ORR Electrocatalyst Activity in 4d-Transition-Metal-Doped g-C3N4 Monolayers

Exploring efficient and stable electrocatalysts for the bifunctional oxygen evolution reaction (OER) and oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is vital to developing renewable energy technologies. However, due to the substantial and intricate design space associated with these bifunctional OER/ORR electrocatalysts, their development presents a formidable challenge, resulting in their cost-prohibitive nature in both experimental and computational studies. Herein, using the defect physics method, we systematically investigate the formation energies and bifunctional overpotential (ηBi) of 4d-transition-metal (4d-TM, 4d-TM = Zr, Nb, Mo, Ru, Rh, Pd, and Ag)-doped monolayer supercell g-C3N4 (4d-TM@C54N72) based on the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Under N-rich and C-rich conditions, we find that the formation energies of RhN@C54N71 (Rh occupation N) and PdN@C54N71 (Pd occupation N) are smaller than that of other 4d-TMN@C54N71 (4d-TM occupation N site); for the 4d-TMint@C54N72 (4d-TM interstitial site occupation), the lowest-formation energy defects are Pdint@C54N72. These results indicate that they have better stabilities. Interestingly, for these formation energy lower systems, Pd0int@C54N72 (ηBi = 1.00 V) and Rh1+N@C54N71 (ηBi = 0.73 V) have ultralow overpotential and can be great candidates for bifunctional OER/ORR electrocatalysts. We find the reason is that adjusting the charge states of 4d-TM@C54N72 can tune the interaction strength between the oxygenated intermediates and the 4d-TM@C54N72, which plays a crucial role in the activity of reactions. Additionally, the data obtained through machine learning (ML) application suggest that the electronegativity (Nm) and bond length of 4d-TM and coordination atoms (dTM-OOH) are primary descriptors characterizing the OER and ORR activities, respectively. The charged defect tuning of the bifunctional OER/ORR activity for 4d-TM@C54N72 would enable electrocatalytic performance optimization and the development of potential electrocatalysts for renewable energy applications.

Polydopamine-Modified 2D Iron (II) Immobilized MnPS3 Nanosheets for Multimodal Imaging-Guided Cancer Synergistic Photothermal-Chemodynamic Therapy

Manganese phosphosulphide (MnPS3 ), a newly emerged and promising member of the 2D metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPX3 ) family, has aroused abundant interest due to its unique physicochemical properties and applications in energy storage and conversion. However, its potential in the field of biomedicine, particularly as a nanotherapeutic platform for cancer therapy, has remained largely unexplored. Herein, a 2D "all-in-one" theranostic nanoplatform based on MnPS3 is designed and applied for imaging-guided synergistic photothermal-chemodynamic therapy. (Iron) Fe (II) ions are immobilized on the surface of MnPS3 nanosheets to facilitate effective chemodynamic therapy (CDT). Upon surface modification with polydopamine (PDA) and polyethylene glycol (PEG), the obtained Fe-MnPS3 /PDA-PEG nanosheets exhibit exceptional photothermal conversion efficiency (η = 40.7%) and proficient pH/NIR-responsive Fenton catalytic activity, enabling efficient photothermal therapy (PTT) and CDT. Importantly, such nanoplatform can also serve as an efficient theranostic agent for multimodal imaging, facilitating real-time monitoring and guidance of the therapeutic process. After fulfilling the therapeutic functions, the Fe-MnPS3 /PDA-PEG nanosheets can be efficiently excreted from the body, alleviating the concerns of long-term retention and potential toxicity. This work presents an effective, precise, and safe 2D "all-in-one" theranostic nanoplatform based on MnPS3 for high-efficiency tumor-specific theranostics.
