Word Retrieval Difficulties and Cognitive Control in Specific Language Impairment

Executive functions in children with developmental language disorder: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Background

The purpose of the current study was to assess the differences between children with developmental language disorder (DLD) and typically developing (TD) children in their performance of executive functions from working memory, inhibitory control, and cognitive flexibility.

Methods

We performed a systematical search of PubMed, Embase, Cochrane, and Web of Science for case control studies (published in English between January 1, 1950, and October 11, 2023) comparing the differences in the performance of executive functions between DLD and TD children.

Results

Forty eligible studies were included in the present study (N = 3,168 participants). In comparison with TD children, DLD children exhibited significantly poorer performances in all six verbal working memory tasks (backward digit recall task, SMD -1.4321, 95% CI -2.2692 to -0.5950; listening recall task, SMD -1.4469, 95% CI -1.7737 to -1.1202; counting recall task, SMD -0.9192, 95% CI -1.4089 to -0.4295; digit recall task, SMD -1.2321, 95% CI -1.4397 to -1.0244; word list recall task, SMD -1.1375, 95% CI -1.5579 to -0.7171; non-word recall task, SMD -1.5355, 95% CI -1.8122 to -1.2589). However, regarding inhibitory control and cognitive flexibility, the differences between DLD and TD children depended on specific circumstances. In subgroup analyses of all verbal working memory tasks, DLD children presented notably lower performance than TD children in both the monolingual English and monolingual non-English groups, and in both the preschooler and school-aged groups.

Conclusion

This study proves that verbal working memory deficits can be seen as a marker for children with DLD and are not affected by age or language type.

Anomia in left hemisphere stroke, multiple sclerosis and Parkinson's disease - a comparative study

PURPOSE

To explore quantitative and qualitative features of anomia in participants with left-hemisphere stroke, Parkinson's disease, or multiple sclerosis.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

This descriptive cross-sectional study compares signs of anomia within and across participants (n = 87), divided into four groups; moderate to severe anomia after stroke (MSAS, n = 19), mild anomia after stroke (MAS, n = 22), PD (n = 19) and MS (n = 27). Aspects analysed include naming accuracy and speed, the nature of incorrect responses, semantic and phonemic verbal fluency, information content in re-telling, and the relationship between test results and self-reports on word-finding difficulties and communicative participation.

RESULTS

All groups had impaired verbal fluency, prolonged response times and reduced information content in re-telling. The MSAS group had significantly more signs of anomia than the other groups. Results from the other groups overlapped on a MAS-PD-MS continuum. Both semantically and phonologically incorrect responses were common in the stroke groups, while semantically incorrect ones predominated in the PD and MS groups. All four groups reported a similar negative impact on self-perceived communicative participation. Correlations between self-reports and test results were inconsistent.

CONCLUSIONS

Anomia features have quantitative and qualitative similarities and differences across neurological conditions.

Developmental Language Disorder Is Associated With Slower Processing Across Domains: A Meta-Analysis of Time-Based Tasks

PURPOSE

Individuals with developmental language disorder (DLD) often exhibit slower processing on time-based tasks in comparison with age-matched peers. Processing speed has been linked to various linguistic skills and might serve as a global indicator of individual differences in language abilities. Despite an extensive literature on processing speed in DLD, it remains unclear whether slower processing is domain general or restricted to linguistic and/or auditory tasks.

METHOD

This meta-analysis used robust variance estimation to compare response/reaction times (RTs) of DLD and age-matched groups (N = 812 DLD, 870 neurotypical; M _age [DLD] = 8.9 years, range: 4.3-22.7 years). Moderators included task (simple RT, choice RT, naming, congruent/baseline conditions of interference control tasks), stimulus type (linguistic/nonlinguistic), stimulus modality (auditory/nonauditory), and response modality (verbal/nonverbal). Age and publication year were covariates.

RESULTS

The overall effect based on 46 studies and 144 estimates indicated longer mean RTs in DLD groups (g = .47, p < .001, 95% CI [.38, .55]). Moderator analyses indicated larger effects when tasks required verbal as opposed to nonverbal responses. No other moderators approached significance. All subgroup analyses were significant, indicating longer mean RTs in DLD groups across tasks, stimulus types, stimulus modalities, and response modalities.

CONCLUSIONS

Individuals with DLD exhibit longer RTs across verbal and nonverbal tasks, which may contribute to observed difficulties in language, motor skills, and executive functioning. Simple processing speed measures should be included in screening for language delays but may not be suitable for differential diagnosis, given that slower processing may occur across multiple disorders.

The relationship between cognitive control and lexical conflict resolution in developmental dyslexia

Previous studies have revealed that cognitive control functions contribute to the resolution of lexical interference. Both cognitive control (CC) deficits and reduced speed of lexical retrieval in Rapid Automatized Naming (RAN) tasks are characteristics of Developmental Dyslexia (DD), but it is still not fully understood how these deficits relate to each other and to reading problems. To examine this question, we tested adolescents with DD (n = 38), poor readers (PR; n = 25) and typical readers (TR; n = 33) matched on age and IQ, on CC functions with Stroop, Stop Signal, Simon, Backward Digit Span and n-back tasks and on lexical retrieval and lexical conflict resolution with RAN of pictures in semantically homogeneous vs. mixed trials. As expected, in the blocked RAN Task DD individuals showed longer naming times and a greater effect of lexical conflict resolution (indexed by difference scores of naming times in the homogeneous and mixed conditions) than TR participants. We also found significant group differences (TR = PR > DD) in CC measures. Naming time was associated with CC, while the lexical interference effect did not show any association with this set of abilities. These findings suggest that DD individuals show impairments in multiple cognitive functions, such as cognitive control, lexical retrieval and lexical conflict resolution. Our results also suggest that CC functions are involved in lexical retrieval, but we have not found evidence for their involvement in lexical conflict resolution processes.

La bioética en la investigación de funciones ejecutivas en niños con trastorno específico del lenguaje

En la actualidad, mucho se habla sobre bioética. Desafortunadamente, en lo que respecta a los lineamientos que deben regular y velar por la dignidad y los derechos de los niños, no existe una coherencia con el nivel de desarrollo técnico contemplado en las investigaciones en el área de los trastornos específicos del lenguaje y las funciones ejecutivas. Para esta investigación se realizaron tres búsquedas diferenciadas en bases de datos de Web of Science, Scopus, Scielo, Biblioteca del Congreso Nacional de Chile y fuentes grises con los descriptores “specific language impairment”, “sli”, “executive functions”, “memory”, “attention”, “inhibition”, “bioética”, “principios de bioética”, “bioética infantil”, “investigación científica” y “derechos del niño”, reparando, específicamente, en la presencia o ausencia de lineamientos éticos declarados en su metodología o procedimiento de trabajo para analizar de forma crítica su progresión desde los años ochenta hasta la actualidad. En las conclusiones se ha evidenciado que los principios bioéticos generales no son demasiado pertinentes si no se acompañan por políticas nacionales e internacionales que velen por la dignidad de los niños. Por este motivo, contar con disposiciones bioéticas específicas y sistematizadas para la población pediátrica, en la que se incluyen los estudios de FE y TEL, es fundamental. Así es posible abolir todos los dilemas bioéticos que puedan surgir de los vacíos que las actuales leyes presentan. Por esta razón, es indispensable un replanteamiento de principios para este rango etario.

Word Form Processing in Primary School Children: A Psycholinguistic Perspective

Purpose From a psycholinguistic perspective, the quality of the stored word form in the phonological input lexicon, as well as its effective retrieval from the phonological output lexicon, is of great importance in lexical processing. This study aimed at gaining a deeper understanding of (a)typical word form processing in primary school children. In particular, age-related development and profiles of word form processing including children's response behavior were investigated. Method A sample of 164 monolingual primary school children (6-9 years of age) was tested in a cross-sectional design using two word form-related tasks (auditory lexical decision and rapid naming) with carefully controlled stimuli in combination with traditional vocabulary tests and a nonword repetition task. Results First, an age-related improvement (better performance and acceleration of reaction times) was found for both word form-related tasks. Second, a cluster analysis revealed five clusters with different profiles of word processing. Beside a cluster with overall results of above average, we found two clusters including children with typical lexical abilities who applied specific strategies to deal with the tasks (speed-accuracy trade-offs). Two other clusters represented weak lexical abilities at different levels of word processing. Conclusions Children's abilities in word form processing develop over time and are characterized by developmental boosts that occur at different times in development. The uncovered profiles document patterns of (a)typical lexical processing. Since difficulties with word form processing are easily overlooked in clinical assessment, lexical decision and rapid naming tasks offer valuable tools for an in-depth evaluation of lexical skills.
