Detection of dynamic changes in interaural delay by older adults (L)

The ability of older adults (48 to 72) with relatively intact low-frequency hearing to detect the motion of an acoustic source was investigated using dynamically varying interaural delays. Thresholds were measured using a single-interval two-alternative forced-choice task in which listeners determined if the sound source was moving or stationary. Motion thresholds were significantly larger than stationary localization thresholds. No correlation was observed between age and motion-detection ability for the age range tested. An interesting finding was that there were similar thresholds for older and younger adults. Results suggest reliance on dominant low-frequency binaural timing cues unaffected by high-frequency hearing loss in older adults.

The developmental trajectory of spatial listening skills in normal-hearing children

PURPOSE

To establish the age at which children can complete tests of spatial listening and to measure the normative relationship between age and performance.

METHOD

Fifty-six normal-hearing children, ages 1.5-7.9 years, attempted tests of the ability to discriminate a sound source on the left from one on the right, to localize a source, to track moving sources, and to perceive speech in noise.

RESULTS

Tests of left-right discrimination, movement tracking, and speech perception were completed by ≥ 75% of children older than 3 years. Children showed adult levels of performance from age 1.5 years (movement tracking), 3 years (left-right discrimination), and 6 years (localization and speech in noise). Spatial release from masking-calculated as the difference in speech reception thresholds between conditions with spatially coincident and spatially separate sp-eech and noise--remained constant at 5 dB from age 3 years. Data from a separate study demonstrate the age at which children with cochlear implants can complete the same tests. Assessments of left-right discrimination, movement tracking, and speech perception were completed by ≥ 75% of children who are older than 5 years and who wear cochlear implants.

CONCLUSION

These data can guide the selection of tests for future studies and inform the interpretation of results from clinical populations.

Effect of masker type and age on speech intelligibility and spatial release from masking in children and adults

Speech recognition in noisy environments improves when the speech signal is spatially separated from the interfering sound. This effect, known as spatial release from masking (SRM), was recently shown in young children. The present study compared SRM in children of ages 5-7 with adults for interferers introducing energetic, informational, and/or linguistic components. Three types of interferers were used: speech, reversed speech, and modulated white noise. Two female voices with different long-term spectra were also used. Speech reception thresholds (SRTs) were compared for: Quiet (target 0 degrees front, no interferer), Front (target and interferer both 0 degrees front), and Right (interferer 90 degrees right, target 0 degrees front). Children had higher SRTs and greater masking than adults. When spatial cues were not available, adults, but not children, were able to use differences in interferer type to separate the target from the interferer. Both children and adults showed SRM. Children, unlike adults, demonstrated large amounts of SRM for a time-reversed speech interferer. In conclusion, masking and SRM vary with the type of interfering sound, and this variation interacts with age; SRM may not depend on the spectral peculiarities of a particular type of voice when the target speech and interfering speech are different sex talkers.

Development of auditory saltation and its relationship to reading and phonological processing

PURPOSE

The temporal offset of auditory saltation is thought to be reflective of the limits of temporal resolution, and has recently been used to compare dyslexic and control adults and children, with mixed results (R. Hari & P. Kiesilä, 1996; M. Kronbichler, F. Hutzler, & H. Wimmer, 2002). This study sought to document and understand normative changes in saltation thresholds as a function of age, and examine the relationship of saltation thresholds to reading and phonological processing across development.

METHOD

This study used a cross-sectional developmental design. Groups of 7-8-, 9-10-, and 11-13-year-old children, and adults, undertook a 2-alternative forced-choice saltation task, along with standard tests of reading and phonological processing.

RESULTS

Significantly higher and more variable saltation thresholds were evident in the 7-8-year-old group. Group distributions were skewed: Only a few young children obtained poor thresholds while most showed adult-like performance. Saltation thresholds were not related to reading or phonological processing skills at any stage of development.

CONCLUSIONS

The temporal offset of saltation is unlikely to reflect the true limits of temporal resolution in young children, but rather the conflation of perceptual and nonperceptual factors (such as poor short-term memory, inattention, and confusion) to task performance. Effort should be made to minimize such nonperceptual factors, particularly when using saltation as a measure of temporal resolution in participants with dyslexia.

Sensory and nonsensory influences on children's performance of dichotic pitch perception tasks

Dichotic pitch perception reflects the auditory system's use of binaural cues to perceptually separate different sound sources and to determine the spatial location of sounds. Several studies were conducted to identify factors that influence children's dichotic pitch perception thresholds. An initial study of school children revealed an age-related improvement in thresholds for lateralizing dichotic pitch tones. In subsequent studies potential sensory and nonsensory limitations on young children's performance of dichotic pitch lateralization tasks were examined. A training study showed that with sufficient practice, young children lateralize dichotic pitch stimuli as well as adults, indicating an age difference in perceptual learning of the lateralization task. Changing the task requirements so that young children made a judgment about the pitch of dichotic pitch tones, rather than the spatial location of the tones, also resulted in significantly better thresholds. These findings indicate that nonsensory factors limit young children's performance of dichotic pitch tasks.

Development of Auditory Temporal Resolution in School-Age Children Revealed by Word Recognition in Continuous and Interrupted Noise

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of the study was to investigate the development of one aspect of auditory temporal resolution in normal-hearing school-age children with word recognition in quiet and in spectrally identical continuous and interrupted noise. Typically, listeners experience a perceptual advantage (i.e., a "release from masking") in the interrupted noise relative to the continuous noise at equivalent signal-to-noise ratios (S/Ns). Any release from masking observed with children in the interrupted noise compared with the continuous noise at equivalent S/Ns could be interpreted as evidence for acquired temporal resolution ability. Differences in the amount of release from masking in the interrupted noise between children and adults could be interpreted as development of temporal resolution ability, or lack thereof, as revealed by word recognition in noise. It was hypothesized that word recognition performance would be poorer in children than adults; performance differences would be more pronounced with competition; word recognition performance would reach an asymptote to adult levels sooner in quiet than with competing stimuli; children would demonstrate better performance in the interrupted noise relative to the continuous noise (i.e., display a release from masking); and younger children would experience less release from masking compared with older children and adults (i.e., have less developed temporal resolution).

DESIGN

Eighty normal-hearing children aged 6 to 15 yr and 16 normal-hearing young adults participated. Word recognition performance with Northwestern University-Children's Perception of Speech (NU-CHIPs) stimuli was evaluated with an open-set response mode in quiet and in backgrounds of competing continuous steady-state and interrupted noise at S/Ns of 10, 0, -10, and -20 dB. Both noises were essentially identical in their spectral content and differed only in their temporal continuity.

RESULTS

Performance was better in the interrupted noise at poorer S/Ns, increased with increasing S/N, and improved with increasing age. Younger listeners were more susceptible to noise. They did not experience an equivalent perceptual advantage (i.e., a release from masking) in the interrupted noise at poorer S/Ns (i.e., < 10 dB) and generally required more favorable S/Ns to perform the same as the adult participants. These trends were less pronounced with increasing age. By 8 yr of age, children's performance in quiet equated that of adult levels, but it did not do so in noise until after 11 yr of age.

CONCLUSIONS

As revealed by their NU-CHIPs word recognition performance in continuous and interrupted noises, children's temporal resolving abilities improve in their early school years and reach adult performance levels after 11 yr of age. It was speculated that these changes reflect maturation in their central auditory system.

Dynamic temporal processing of nonspeech acoustic information by children with specific language impairment

The present study investigated whether children with specific language impairment (SLI) differed from children with normal language learning in their ability to process binaural temporal information. The SLI group was matched with peers of the same chronological age, as well as peers with similar language age. All three subject groups were tested with measures of complex sound localization involving the precedence effect phenomenon. Subjects were required to track the apparent motion of a "moving" fused auditory image (FAI). Movement of the FAI was simulated by varying the delay incrementally between pairs of clicks presented, one each, from two matched loudspeakers placed on opposite sides of the child's head. With this task, the SLI subjects' performances were found to be similar to their language age-matched but chronologically younger peers. Both groups exhibited tracking skills that were statistically poorer than that of the chronologically age-matched group. Additional tests indicated this effect was not due to differences in motoric tracking abilities nor to the SLI subjects' abilities to perceive small binaural time cues. Thus, children with SLI appear to be impaired in their ability to use binaural acoustic information in a dynamic ongoing fashion. The requirements for processing such nonlinguistic acoustic information in a "dynamic and ongoing" fashion may be similar to those involved in the ongoing processing of rapid changes in the temporal and spectral components of the speech chain.
