Non-Invasive Data Acquisition and IoT Solution for Human Vital Signs Monitoring: Applications, Limitations and Future Prospects

The rapid development of technology has brought about a revolution in healthcare stimulating a wide range of smart and autonomous applications in homes, clinics, surgeries and hospitals. Smart healthcare opens the opportunity for a qualitative advance in the relations between healthcare providers and end-users for the provision of healthcare such as enabling doctors to diagnose remotely while optimizing the accuracy of the diagnosis and maximizing the benefits of treatment by enabling close patient monitoring. This paper presents a comprehensive review of non-invasive vital data acquisition and the Internet of Things in healthcare informatics and thus reports the challenges in healthcare informatics and suggests future work that would lead to solutions to address the open challenges in IoT and non-invasive vital data acquisition. In particular, the conducted review has revealed that there has been a daunting challenge in the development of multi-frequency vital IoT systems, and addressing this issue will help enable the vital IoT node to be reachable by the broker in multiple area ranges. Furthermore, the utilization of multi-camera systems has proven its high potential to increase the accuracy of vital data acquisition, but the implementation of such systems has not been fully developed with unfilled gaps to be bridged. Moreover, the application of deep learning to the real-time analysis of vital data on the node/edge side will enable optimal, instant offline decision making. Finally, the synergistic integration of reliable power management and energy harvesting systems into non-invasive data acquisition has been omitted so far, and the successful implementation of such systems will lead to a smart, robust, sustainable and self-powered healthcare system.

Paving the way towards continuous biosensing by implementing affinity-based nanoswitches on state-dependent readout platforms

A Review on existing IoT Architecture and Communication Protocols used in Healthcare Monitoring System

Nowadays, due to modernization or advancement in the Internet of Things (IoT) especially in the Healthcare area, we want to take care of our elders with some monitoring equipment, and the Internet of Things can play a significant role in it. The motivation of writing this paper is to collect the information of various existing Internet of Things Architecture and Communication Techniques used in Healthcare Monitoring System to observe that how efficiently, different researchers have used it. So we have studied different real-time health monitoring system based on diseases which are common in elderly people like diabetes, blood pressure, heart disease, sleep apnea, and cancer, etc. In this real-time health monitoring system, researchers introduced many new measures, communication techniques like ZigBee, Long-Range Wide Area Network (LoRawan), Radio Frequency Identification (RFID). Apart from this, it was also observed that remote monitoring system in Healthcare is incomplete without data processing and early prediction in such diseases. Though, Machine learning provides efficient techniques to extract knowledge from diagnostic medical datasets collected from the patients. That is why we highlighted the current role of various Machine Learning algorithms like Support Vector Machine, K-Nearest Neighbor, Random Forest, etc., for processing of Healthcare data and also helpful to predict the output more precisely.

IoT based wearable device to monitor the signs of quarantined remote patients of COVID-19

Monitoring and managing potential infected patients of COVID-19 is still a great challenge for the latest technologies. In this work, IoT based wearable monitoring device is designed to measure various vital signs related to COVID-19. Moreover, the system automatically alerts the concerned medical authorities about any violations of quarantine for potentially infected patients by monitoring their real time GPS data. The wearable sensor placed on the body is connected to edge node in IoT cloud where the data is processed and analyzed to define the state of health condition. The proposed system is implemented with three layered functionalities as wearable IoT sensor layer, cloud layer with Application Peripheral Interface (API) and Android web layer for mobile phones. Each layer has individual functionality, first the data is measured from IoT sensor layer to define the health symptoms. The next layer is used to store the information in the cloud database for preventive measures, alerts, and immediate actions. The Android mobile application layer is responsible for providing notifications and alerts for the potentially infected patient family respondents. The integrated system has both API and mobile application synchronized with each other for predicting and alarming the situation. The design serves as an essential platform that defines the measured readings of COVID-19 symptoms for monitoring, management, and analysis. Furthermore, the work disseminates how digital remote platform as wearable device can be used as a monitoring device to track the health and recovery of a COVID-19 patient.

Trends in IoT based solutions for health care: Moving AI to the edge

In recent times, we assist to an ever growing diffusion of smart medical sensors and Internet of things devices that are heavily changing the way healthcare is approached worldwide. In this context, a combination of Cloud and IoT architectures is often exploited to make smart healthcare systems capable of supporting near realtime applications when processing and performing Artificial Intelligence on the huge amount of data produced by wearable sensor networks. Anyway, the response time and the availability of cloud based systems, together with security and privacy, still represent critical issues that prevents Internet of Medical Things (IoMT) devices and architectures from being a reliable and effective solution to the aim. Lately, there is a growing interest towards architectures and approaches that exploit Edge and Fog computing as an answer to compensate the weaknesses of the cloud. In this paper, we propose a short review about the general use of IoT solutions in health care, starting from early health monitoring solutions from wearable sensors up to a discussion about the latest trends in fog/edge computing for smart health.

Advancements in SPR biosensing technology: An overview of recent trends in smart layers design, multiplexing concepts, continuous monitoring and in vivo sensing

Inspired by the rapid progress and existing limitations in surface plasmon resonance (SPR) biosensing technology, we have summarized the recent trends in the fields of both chip-SPR and fiber optic (FO)-SPR biosensors during the past five years, primarily regarding smart layers design, multiplexing, continuous monitoring and in vivo sensing. Versatile surface chemistries, biomaterials and nanomaterials have been utilized thus far to generate smart layers on SPR platforms and as such achieve oriented immobilization of bioreceptors, improved fouling resistance and sensitivity enhancement, collectively aiming to improve the biosensing performance. Furthermore, often driven by the desires for time- and cost-effective quantification of multiple targets in a single measurement, efforts have been made to implement multiplex bioassays on SPR platforms. While this aspect largely remains difficult to attain, numerous alternative strategies arose for obtaining parallel analysis of multiple analytes in one single device. Additionally, one of the upcoming challenges in this field will be to succeed in using SPR platforms for continuous measurements and in vivo sensing, and as such match up other biosensing platforms where these goals have been already conquered. Overall, this review will give insight into multiple possibilities that have become available over the years for boosting the performance of SPR biosensors. However, because combining them all into one optimal sensor is practically not feasible, the final application needs to be considered while designing an SPR biosensor, as this will determine the requirements of the bioassay and will thus help in selecting the essential elements from the recent progress made in SPR sensing.

Toward Security Enhanced Provisioning in Industrial IoT Systems

Through the active development of industrial internet of things (IIoT) technology, there has been a rapid increase in the number of different industrial wireless sensor networks (IWSNs). Accordingly, the security of IWSNs is also of importance, as many security problems related to IWSN protocols have been raised and various studies have been conducted to solve these problems. However, the provisioning process is the first step in introducing a new device into the IIoT network and a starting point for IIoT security. Therefore, leakage of security information in the provisioning process makes exposure of secret keys and all subsequent security measures meaningless. In addition, using the exploited secret keys, the attacker can send false command to the node or send false data to the network manager and it can cause serious damage to industrial infrastructure depending on the IWSN. Nevertheless, a security study on the provisioning process has not been actively carried out, resulting in a provisioning process without guaranteed security. Therefore, in this paper, we analyzed security issues of the provisioning process in IWSN by researching prominent IWSN standards, including ISA 100.11a, WirelessHART, and Zigbee, and also an ISA 100.11a-certified device and provisioning process-related studies. Then, we verified the security issues of the provisioning process through testing and analyzing the provisioning process using the ISA 100.11a standard-implemented devices and ISA 100.11a-certified devices. Finally, we discuss security considerations and the direction of future research on provisioning security for IWSN in the IIoT era.
