Ultrafast laser inscription in ZBLAN integrated optics chips for mid-IR beam combination in astronomical interferometry

Astronomical interferometry is a unique technique that allows observation with angular resolutions on the milliarcsec scale by combining the light of several apertures hundreds of meters apart. The PIONIER and GRAVITY instruments at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer have demonstrated that silica-based integrated optics (IO) provide a small-scale and highly stable solution for the interferometric beam combination process. Yet, important science cases such as exoplanet hunting or the spectroscopic characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres are favorable for observation in the mid-IR, namely the atmospheric windows L and L' band (3-4 µm), a wavelength range that is not covered by conventional silica-based IO. Here, we propose laser-inscribed IO 2×2 couplers in ZBLAN and experimentally assess the critical properties of the component for broadband mid-IR interferometry. We measure the splitting ratio over the 2.5 to 5.0 µm range and find excellent broadband contrast over the L (3.1-3.6 µm) and L' (3.6 - 4.0 µm) bands. Furthermore, we quantify the dispersion properties of the coupler and find a phase variation as low as 0.02 rad across the L and L' band, respectively. By optimizing the NA of our injection beam, we measured a very high total throughput of 58% over the L band including Fresnel reflection and coupling losses. We also compare our findings to recent advances in mid-IR IO in GLS and discuss its advantages and disadvantages for the implementation in future mid-IR interferometers.

Three-dimensional mid-infrared photonic circuits in chalcogenide glass

We report the fabrication of single-mode buried channel waveguides for the whole mid-IR transparency range of chalcogenide sulphide glasses (λ ≤ 11 μm), by means of direct laser writing. We have explored the potential of this technology by fabricating a prototype three-dimensional three-beam combiner for future application in stellar interferometry that delivers a monochromatic interference visibility of 99.89% at 10.6 μm and an ultrahigh bandwidth (3-11 μm) interference visibility of 21.3%. These results demonstrate that it is possible to harness the whole transparency range offered by chalcogenide glasses on a single on-chip instrument by means of direct laser writing, a finding that may be of key significance in future technologies such as astrophotonics and biochemical sensing.

Midinfrared broadband achromatic astronomical beam combiner for nulling interferometry

Integrated optic beam combiners offer many advantages over conventional bulk optic implementations for astronomical imaging. To our knowledge, integrated optic beam combiners have only been demonstrated at operating wavelengths below 4 μm. Operation in the midinfrared wavelength region, however, is highly desirable. In this paper, a theoretical design technique based on three coupled waveguides is developed to achieve fully achromatic, broadband, polarization-insensitive, lossless beam combining. This design may make it possible to achieve the very deep broadband nulls needed for exoplanet searching.

An infrared integrated optic astronomical beam combiner for stellar interferometry at 3-4 microm

Integrated-optic, astronomical, two-beam and three-beam, interferometric combiners have been designed and fabricated for operation in the L band (3 microm--4 microm) for the first time. The devices have been realized in titanium-indiffused, x-cut lithium niobate substrates, and on-chip electro-optic fringe scanning has been demonstrated. White light fringes were produced in the laboratory using the two-beam combiner integrated with an on-chip Y-splitter.

A New Miniaturised Optical System for Chemical Species Spectroscopic Detection Based on a Scanning Integrated Mach–Zehnder Microinterferometer on LiNbO3

Absorption or emission spectroscopy is a powerful tool for detecting chemical compounds, diluted in fluid media: the sensitivity of this technique depends on the optical path of the source radiation, on the spectral window used for analysis and on the spectrometer performances. In this view, we designed and produced the first prototypes of an integrated scanning Fourier Transform Microinterferometer with Mach-Zehnder geometry, by using MEOS (Micro Electro Optical Systems) technologies. The microdevice, obtained by fabricating integrated optical waveguides on LiNbO(3) (LN) crystals, is electrically driven, without moving parts, by exploiting the electrooptical properties of the material. The microdevice operates the Fourier Transform of the input radiation spectral distribution, which can be reconstructed starting from the output signal by means of Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) techniques. The microinterferometer weights few grams, the power consumption is of a few mW and, in principle, can operate in the LN transmittance range (0.36-4.5 microm). The microinterferometer performances were preliminary tested in the (0.4-1.7 microm) spectral window. In the Visible region (0.4-0.7 mum) this microsystem demonstrated a spectral resolution suitable for detecting the characteristic lines of the solar spectrum together with the absorption bands of common gases present in Earth's atmosphere. In a further experiment we tested its performances for gas trace detection by using a calibrated NO(2) optical gas cell, showing the possibility to reveal up to 10 ppb, when suitable optical paths are used. Finally, colorimetry tests for the titration of an organic dye (E131) in alcohol solution are presented.

Use of single-mode waveguides to correct the optical defects of a nulling interferometer

In the area of long-baseline nulling interferometry, high rejection ratios are needed to cancel out the light of a bright central source and look for nearby faint structures or companions. These rejection requirements directly translate into drastic optical constraints. We discuss the possibility of using single-mode waveguides for such applications. Conversely to simple pinholes, single-mode waveguides efficiently correct wave-front defects of both high- and low-order spatial frequencies, ensure a perfect matching of the amplitude profiles coming from the various beams, and can be used with almost optimum coupling efficiency over a broad optical bandpass (typically an octave). They then appear to greatly enhance the feasibility of high-dynamic interferometric coronagraphs.

Laboratory imaging stellar interferometer with fiber links

We report on the implementation of an end-to-end imaging demonstrator to validate the concept of optical fiber use in high-resolution aperture synthesis in astronomy. As the coherent transport of light has been conclusively investigated, this study is focused primarily on the accuracy and reliability of the experimental data. In the framework of the European Space Agency project Optical Aperture Synthesis Technologies (OAST), the telescope array's complexity is minimized such that a realistic concept for a future space mission can be proposed. The reconstructed images are obtained by use of a particular self-calibration procedure that was designed to process the visibility contrast and the related weak phase information (one phase closure for each visibility triplet).

Integrated Optics for Astronomical Interferometry. III. Optical Validation of a Planar Optics Two-Telescope Beam Combiner

The optical characterization of a fiber-connected planar optics beam combiner dedicated to astronomical interferometry for two telescopes is presented. The beam combiner, fully integrated on a single 5 mm x 40 mm glass chip, is tested as the central part of an astronomical instrument. The single-mode waveguides are made by silver-ion-exchange technology upon glass substrates and provide spatial filtering, which improves the visibility measurement accuracy by selecting only the fundamental mode of the beams at the telescope focal plane. A global optical throughput of 43% is measured, and the sources of losses are identified and examined in detail. Solutions for improving this throughput are proposed. High and stable contrasts are obtained with a 1.55-mum laser diode (?96%) and with a white-light source (~92%) in the astronomical H filter (1.43 mum; 1.77 mum). The need for accurate control of differential instrumental polarization is demonstrated. In this context the intrinsic polarization-maintaining property of the planar optics component is characterized. This validation of the important potential uses of integrated planar optics should be valuable for future design of optical telescope arrays.
