Abstract
Background Uterine Cervical Carcinoma (UCC) is the most prevalent gynecological malignancy globally, with a rising incidence in recent years. Accumulating evidence indicates that specific viral infections, including human papillomavirus (HPV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), Hepatitis B and C viruses (HBV and HCV), and human herpesvirus (HHV), may contribute to UCC development and progression. Understanding the complex interplay between viral infections and UCC risk is crucial for developing novel preventative and therapeutic interventions. Methods This comprehensive review investigates the association between viral infections and UCC risk by examining the roles of various viral pathogens in UCC etiology and pathogenesis, and possible molecular mechanisms. Additionally, we evaluate current diagnostic methods and potential therapeutic strategies targeting viral infections for UCC prevention or treatment. Results The prevention of UCC has been significantly advanced by the emergence of self-sampling for HPV testing as a crucial tool, allowing for early detection and intervention. However, an essential challenge in UCC prevention lies in understanding how HPV and other viral coinfections, including EBV, HBV, HCV, HHV, HIV, or their concurrent presence, may potentially contribute to UCC development. The molecular mechanisms implicated in the association between viral infections and cervical cancer development include: (1) interference of viral oncogenes with cellular regulatory proteins, resulting in uncontrolled cell proliferation and malignant transformation; (2) inactivation of tumor suppressor genes by viral proteins; (3) evasion of host immune responses by viruses; (4) induction of a persistent inflammatory response, contributing to a tumor-promoting microenvironment; (5) epigenetic modifications that lead to aberrant gene expression; (6) stimulation of angiogenesis by viruses; and (7) activation of telomerase by viral proteins, leading to cellular immortalization. Additionally, viral coinfections can also enhance oncogenic potential through synergistic interactions between viral oncoproteins, employ immune evasion strategies, contribute to chronic inflammation, modulate host cellular signaling pathways, and induce epigenetic alterations, ultimately leading to cervical carcinogenesis. Conclusion Recognizing the implications of viral oncogenes in UCC etiology and pathogenesis is vital for addressing the escalating burden of UCC. Developing innovative preventative and therapeutic interventions requires a thorough understanding of the intricate relationship between viral infections and UCC risk.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION A poorly differentiated lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) of the cervix is an extremely rare presentation. We herein present an unusual case of LELC of the cervix, which was treated with radical trachelectomy for fertility preservation. PATIENT CONCERNS A 28-year-old female patient presented with a 1-month-history of post-coital vaginal bleeding, and a 2 cm tumor was found on gynecological sonography and magnetic resonance imaging. DIAGNOSIS The final pathological examination established a conclusive diagnosis of LELC of the cervix. After surgery, the patient was finally diagnosed as The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics (FIGO) stage IB1 with no vaginal wall or parametrium infiltration. INTERVENTIONS Subsequently, a surgery was scheduled, and intraoperatively, we performed resection twice because of a frozen biopsy result that was resection margin-positive initially. As a result, further resection was performed, which was a 5mm thickness for each. Cisplatin adjuvant chemotherapy was administered 3 weeks after the operation to prevent recurrence. OUTCOMES The patient has been followed for 1 year postoperatively, with an adjuvant treatment, with no evidence of tumor recurrence or metastasis. CONCLUSION Based on this case, we highly recommend that operators should consider a deeper resection margin range than that visible on magnetic resonance imaging. More attention is needed to better understand the treatment method for LELC of the cervix. We also plan to closely monitor the patient's prognosis and fertility, and to conduct additional studies.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma is a rare type of tumor that is histologically identical to lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the nasopharynx. Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas (LELCs) are closely associated with viral infections. Human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated LELCs have been reported in a variety of anatomic sites. We reported an extremely rare case of a 25-year-old woman with LELC derived from the anal canal, which is the second case reported at this site. The tumor was diffusely positive for p16 staining, and was correlated with high-risk HPV-16; Epstein-Barr virus-encoded small RNA was negative; PD-L1 positivity and abundant CD8+ T cell infiltration were observed, indicating a “hot” immune microenvironment. In reporting this case, we highlight the potential for misdiagnosis and suggested an association of HPV infection with LELC in the anal canal.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the uterine cervix is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma. Herein, we describe three cases of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the uterine cervix and review relevant literature. All three patients initially presented with postmenopausal bleeding. Gross appearances were endophytic with ulcerated mucosa in case 1, exophytic with polypoid morphology in case 2, and unremarkable even using colposcopy and hysteroscopy in case 3. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated well-demarcated cervical masses with high-intermediate intensity on T2-weighted images and high intensity on diffusion-weighted images in all three cases. In case 3, biopsy referring to local information from magnetic resonance images was required for preoperative diagnosis. We reviewed the literature of 59 lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma cases in 19 papers published between 2001 and 2020. Preoperative diagnosis of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma is sometimes challenging, although magnetic resonance imaging findings may help determine the location of the tumor and obtain a successful biopsy.

Abstract
Background and objectives: Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is a histological type of malignant tumor arising from the uncontrolled mitosis of transformed cells originating in epithelial tissue. It is a rare subtype of squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. There are significant differences in frequency, mean age, viral status, and outcomes in Asian or Caucasian patients. Materials and Methods: A retrospective study of all cases of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the cervix at the Clinic of Oncogynecology, University Hospital, Pleven, Bulgaria between 1 January 2007 and 31 December 2016 was performed. All patients were followed-up till March 2019. We analyzed some clinical characteristics of the patients, calculated the frequency of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the cervix from all patients with stage I cervical cancer, and looked at the overall survival rate, the 5-year survival rate, and the correlation between overall survival, lymph node status, and the size of the tumor. Results: The frequency of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma was 3.3% for all cases with cervical carcinoma at stage I. The mean age of the patients with LELC was 49.6 years (range 32–67). Fourteen patients (82.4%) were in the FIGO IB1 stage, three patients (17.6%) were in the FIGO IB2 stage. Lymph nodes were metastatic in three patients (17.6%), non-metastatic in 13 patients (76.5%), and unknown in one patient. The overall survival rate was 76.47% for the study period and the 5-year survival rate of the patients that were followed-up until the 5th year (14 patients) was 69.23%. Conclusions: Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma is a rare SCC subtype, but it could be more frequent among western patients than previously thought. Our results do not confirm the data showing low risk of lymph metastasis and good prognosis of LELC, which is why we think that the treatment in these cases has to be more aggressive than is reported in the literature.

Abstract
Objectives Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) of the uterine cervix is a rare tumor. The goal of this study was to evaluate a series of cases of cervical LELC and to investigate possible association with human papillomavirus (HPV) and/or Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). Methods Immunohistochemistry for p63, p16, human leukocyte antigen-D related (HLA-DR), and B-cell lymphoma 2 (BCL-2); in situ hybridization (ISH) for EBV and HPV; and polymerase chain reaction (PCR) genotyping were performed. Mismatch repair (MMR) studies and PD-L1 status were obtained. Results We found eight cases of LELC. Tumors demonstrated sheets of cells containing vesicular nuclei, amphiphilic cytoplasm, and dense peri- and intratumoral lymphocytic infiltrates. All tumors stained for p63, p16, and HLA-DR; two also stained for BCL-2. When combining ISH and PCR results, seven tumors were HPV positive; they were all Epstein-Barr encoding region negative. All cases were MMR intact, and most overexpressed PD-L1. Conclusions This study shows that cervical LELCs are associated with HPV and not EBV.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to characterize the inflammatory infiltrate of the lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma, a variant of squamous cell carcinoma clinically associated with a good prognosis. Immunohistochemistry was used to characterize 3 cases of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma in the uterine cervix, diagnosed over a period of 3 yr. The patients were between 30 and 50 yr old. Their cervical smears had shown atypical squamous cells of unknown significance or high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions, and the initial cervical biopsy showed high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN3) or squamous cell carcinoma. All patients underwent a Wertheim operation, 2 of which were preceded by a cervicectomy. Microscopically, all tumors were characterized by poorly defined sheets of undifferentiated squamous cells with a syncytial pattern and a dense background of infiltrating lymphocytes. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that the lymphocytes were predominantly CD3 and CD8 T cells. The tumor lobules contained isolated CD8 T cells, whereas CD4 T cells and CD20 B cells surrounded the tumor lobules. CD56 NK cells and CD79 B cells were scattered in the tumor tissue. An in situ hybridization staining for Epstein-Barr encoding region was negative but all cases were immunohistochemically positive for P16. Follow-up varied between 2 mo and 2.7 yr. All 3 patients were disease free. Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the uterine cervix is a variant of squamous cell carcinoma, known for its better prognosis. The good prognosis of this tumor is potentially explained by the high levels of infiltrating CD8 T cells.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the endometrium is a very rare variant of endometrial carcinoma characterized by syncytial nests of pleomorphic epithelial cells and heavy infiltration of the stroma by lymphocytes (in particular CD8 cytotoxic T-lymphocytes) and plasma cells. Until now, only five cases have been characterized in this location. This report describes the clinicopathological and the molecular features of this unusual tumor. In particular, using the next generation sequencing (NGS) technique, we have demonstrated that this tumor could be associated with PIK3CA and p53 gene mutations. These data have not been reported to date and suggest that lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the endometrium shares common molecular features with high grade endometrioid and serous-like endometrial carcinoma which are associated with poor outcome. Nevertheless, in endometrial lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma, the alterations on cell cycle, apoptosis, and/or senescence secondary to p53 mutations could potentially be counterbalanced by the antitumoral response induced by CD8 cytotoxic T-lymphocytes numerous in these tumors.

Abstract
Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) belongs to the group of gamma-herpes viruses and was the first recognized human oncovirus. EBV is responsible for infectious mononucleosis and multiple lymphoid and epithelial malignancies including B-cell lymphomas (Burkitt lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder), various T-cell/NK lymphoproliferative disorders, nasopharyngeal carcinoma, and gastric carcinoma, respectively. In addition, the presence of EBV has been documented in other cancers including breast, prostate, oral, and salivary gland carcinomas. The presence and role of EBV in cervical cancer and its precursor lesions (CIN) have also been described, but the results from the literature are inconsistent, and the causal role of EBV in cervical cancer pathogenesis has not been established yet. In the present review, we briefly surveyed and critically appraised the current literature on EBV in cervical cancer and its variants (lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma) as well as its precursor lesions (CIN). In addition, we discussed the possible interactions between EBV and human papilloma virus as well as between EBV and immune checkpoint regulators (PD-L1). Though further studies are needed, the available data suggest a possible causal relationship between EBV and cervical cancer pathogenesis.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) of the uterine cervix is exceedingly uncommon. We herein report a rare case of cervical LELC. A 45-year-old woman was admitted to gynecology department with vaginal bleeding for one month. Liquid-based cytology revealed atypical endometrial cells, not otherwise specified on her cervix. On a hysteroscopy, an endocervical mass was identified and the pathologic result was consistent with poorly differentiated squamous cell carcinoma. Magnetic resonance imaging and positron emission tomography with 2-deoxy-2-[fluorine-18] fluoro-D-glucose integrated with computed tomography revealed a 3.1-cm endocervical mass without distant metastasis or enlarged lymph nodes. The International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics stage was IB1. A radical hysterectomy and bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection were performed. The pathologic diagnosis was a poorly differentiated carcinoma, showing features of LELC. She has been followed for 8 months without adjuvant treatment since the surgery, during which time there has been no evidence of tumor recurrence or metastasis.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma occurring in the reproductive organs is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma, and this tumor of the uterine cervix accounts for 0.7% of all primary cervical uterine neoplasms. Associations with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and human papilloma virus (HPV) have been demonstrated in some studies. Some investigators suggested that EBV has an important role in the initiation of lymphoepitheliomalike carcinoma in Asian women. Here we report the case of a 45-year-old Japanese woman, gravida 2 and parity 2. She was admitted due to severe atypical genital bleeding caused by uterine cervical cancer. A >60-mm tumor was detected at the uterine cervix, and no distal metastasis or swallowing of lymph nodes was revealed by magnetic resonance imaging and a computed tomography scan. The cervical cancer stage FIGO Ib2 was diagnosed, and a radical hysterectomy was performed for this malignant tumor. The in situ hybridization for EBV was negative. HVP infection was strongly suspected because the squamous cell carcinoma was observed macroscopically in the uterine cervix. The prognosis of uterine lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma is thought to be better than those of other cervical cancer types, but careful follow-up at fixed intervals is recommended. The patient has been followed up for 4 months since her surgery, and no evidence of recurrence has been detected.

Abstract
Background Despite the fact that the implication of human papillomavirus (HPV) in the carcinogenesis and prognosis of cervical cancer is well established, the impact of a co-infection with high risk HPV (HR-HPV) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is still not fully understood. Methods Fifty eight randomly selected cases of squamous cell carcinomas (SCC) of the uterine cervix, 14 normal cervices specimens, 21 CIN-2/3 and 16 CIN-1 cases were examined for EBV and HPV infections. Detection of HR-HPV specific sequences was carried out by PCR amplification using consensus primers of Manos and by Digene Hybrid Capture. The presence of EBV was revealed by amplifying a 660 bp specific EBV sequence of BALF1. mRNA expression of LMP-1 in one hand and protein levels of BARF-1, LMP-1 and EBNA-1 in the other hand were assessed by RT-PCR and immunoblotting and/or immunohischemistry respectively. Results HR-HPV infection was found in patients with SCC (88%), low-grade (75%) and high grade (95%) lesions compared to only 14% of normal cervix cases. However, 69%, 12.5%, 38.1%, and 14% of SCC, CIN-1, CIN-2/3 and normal cervix tissues, respectively, were EBV infected. The highest co-infection (HR-HPV and EBV) was found in squamous cell carcinoma cases (67%). The latter cases showed 27% and 29% expression of EBV BARF-1 and LMP-1 oncogenes respectively. Conclusion The high rate of HR-HPV and EBV co-infection in SCC suggests that EBV infection is incriminated in cervical cancer progression. This could be taken into account as bad prognosis in this type of cancer. However, the mode of action in dual infection in cervical oncogenesis needs further investigation.

Abstract
This report describes a lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the vulva in a 64-year-old woman. The tumor showed distinct morphologic features including syncytial sheets of malignant epithelioid cells and a dense lymphoplasmacytoid infiltrate. In situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry for Epstein-Barr virus were negative. The tumor was treated by surgical excision. No evidence of recurrence has been detected 3 years after treatment. To our knowledge this is the second reported case of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the vulva.

Abstract
Undifferentiated carcinoma (undifferentiated carcinoma, nasopharyngeal type, or lymphoepithelial carcinoma) is an uncommon and histologically distinct tumor in the oropharynx, which in Western countries, has been clearly shown not to harbor Epstein Barr virus (EBV). We sought to analyze these tumors for human papillomavirus (HPV) and to examine their clinical outcomes. All cases of oropharyngeal carcinoma diagnosed as 'undifferentiated' or 'lymphoepithelial' were retrieved from the department files at Barnes-Jewish Hospital. After consensus review by all three study pathologists, 16 were found to have diagnostic histological features and to lack distinguishing characteristics of other oropharyngeal cancers. Immunohistochemistry for p16 and p53 and in-situ hybridization for HPV and EBV encoded small RNA were performed. p16-positive but HPV in situ hybridization-negative cases were analyzed by polymerase chain reaction for high-risk HPV types. The results were correlated with pathological findings and clinical follow up. There were 16 patients. The average age was 59.2 years, 14 patients (88%) were smokers, and 13 (81%) had nodal metastases. In all, 14 cases (88%) were p16 positive and 15 (94%) were HPV positive by in situ hybridization and/or polymerase chain reaction. All cases were negative for EBV, and p53 was overexpressed in five (33%), four of which were HPV positive. Disease recurred in only three patients and two of these died with disease at 38 and 136 months, respectively. Three year overall, disease-free, and disease-specific survival rates were 54, 78, and 100%, respectively. In summary, in our patient population, the majority of oropharyngeal undifferentiated carcinomas harbor transcriptionally active HPV but not EBV. Almost all overexpress p16, and few have p53 overexpression. Disease-specific survival is comparable to published rates for other HPV-related oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma variants and is better than that of HPV-negative carcinomas.

Abstract
This report describes an unusual EBV-negative lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the vulva in a 73-year-old patient. The lesion was localised at the right minor labium and was resected by partial vulvectomy. A synchronous sentinel lymph node biopsy revealed a single micrometastasis in the right inguinal region, which prompted local radiotherapy. Follow-up nine months later showed only slight vulvar atrophy, without signs of local recurrence or distant metastases. Although lymphoepithelioma-like carcinomas of the skin and the female genital tract are presumed to have a better prognosis than their counterparts in the upper aerodigestive tract, possibly due to earlier detection and therapy, this case documents their potential for early metastasis.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC), which is commonly reported in the nasopharynx and occasionally in other organs, remains a rare condition in gynecology. It is morphologically defined as a poorly differentiated carcinoma with prominent lymphoplasmacytic infiltrate. We present a case of an 82-year-old woman with a 10 cm LELC of the ovary shown by inguinal lymph nodes. There was no peritoneal carcinomatosis. Cytoreductive surgery was performed to remove a left ovarian neoplasm and multiple involved lymph nodes. Cytoreduction was complete. The tumor was a mixed poorly undifferentiated ovarian carcinoma consisting of 95% LELC and 5% moderately differentiated serous adenocarcinoma. Immunohistochemistry showed a large infiltration of T lymphocytes and plasma cells. Epstein-Barr virus was not detected by immunolabeling and polymerase chain reaction. The patient was still alive at 24 months of follow-up. To our knowledge, this is the second case of ovarian LELC and the first description of the native tumor before chemotherapy. In conclusion, this rare tumor of the ovary is difficult to diagnose both preoperatively and perioperatively. However, clinicians and pathologists should be aware that ovarian tumors with massive involvement of lymph nodes and no peritoneal carcinomatosis are suggestive of such a diagnosis and that prognosis is relatively good.

Abstract
Human papillomavirus-associated squamous cell cancer of the head and neck (HPV-HNSCC) represents an important subgroup of head and neck cancer that is characterized by distinct epidemiologic, clinical, and pathologic features including a relatively constant microscopic appearance. For those cancers that deviate from the morphologic prototype, an association with HPV may not be recognized and accurate tumor classification may not be achieved. We have identified 22 cases of HPV-HNSCC with well-developed lymphoepithelial features including tumor cells with syncytial cytoplasm, vesicular nuclei, and large central nucleoli dispersed in an inflammatory background as cell clusters or single cells. The pattern closely resembles Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-induced undifferentiated carcinoma of the nasopharynx. Indeed, 3 of the carcinomas presenting as lymph node metastases were originally misdiagnosed as metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Unlike nasopharyngeal carcinoma, the cases were of oropharyngeal origin, p16 positive by immunohistochemistry (22 of 22, 100%), HPV-16 positive by in-situ hybridization (19 of 22, 86%), and EBV negative by in-situ hybridization (21 of 21, 100%). Like conventional HPV-related HNSCC, the cases tended to occur in patients below 60 years of age (77%), men (73%), and nonsmokers (59%). For carcinomas of the head and neck that exhibit lymphoepithelial features, one cannot assume an EBV-driven process by morphology alone. HPV testing has disclosed a previously unrecognized morphologic variant of HPV-HNSCC that is microscopically indistinguishable from EBV-related carcinoma. For lymphoepithelial carcinomas presenting as cervical lymph node metastases, testing for HPV and EBV is mandatory.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma of the uterine cervix. In contrast to Asian women, Caucasian women have a low prevalence of cervical LELC with no infection of the Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) and sporadic appearances of human papilloma viruses (HPV) in Caucasian women. CASE We report a 36-year-old female Caucasian patient with LELC of the cervix. RESULT In contrast to the present studies, our case of LELC of the cervix is not associated with EBV or high-risk HPV appearances. CONCLUSION This is the first study, that showed no relationship between LELC of the uterine cervix with EBV and high-risk HPV infections in a Caucasian woman.

Abstract
The authors report 10 cases of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) of the skin and the results of a molecular biological study for HPV, EBV, and SV40 in lesional tissues. All patients originated from Central Europe. There were seven men and three women, ranging in age from 57 to 86 years. Locations included the face (n = 4), scalp (n = 2), penis (n = 2), and retroauricular area (n = 1); location was unknown for one subject. All but two patients presented with a tumor confined to the skin; in both patients with the penile carcinoma, the tumors had metastasized to an inguinal lymph node. Six patients with available follow-up included four individuals with no evidence of tumor metastasis or recurrences at 2, 3, 4, and 5 years, one patient who died with metastatic disease 7 years after diagnosis, and one patient who died of an unrelated course. Microscopically, all cases showed distinctive features of LELC characterized by variably sized and shaped nodules or syncytial sheets of epithelial cells that contained vesicular chromatic and prominent nucleoli and that were permeated and surrounded by small, well-differentiated lymphocytes and plasma cells. Because all 10 cases studied proved negative for EBV, HPV, and SV40, these viruses seem to play no causal role in LELC of the skin in patients from Central Europe.

Abstract
Methylation of p16 is an important mechanism in cervical carcinogenesis. However, the relationship between cervical squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) remains controversial. Here, we explored whether EBV infection and/or p16 gene inactivation would play any role in cervical carcinogenesis. Eighty-two specimens included 41 invasive SCCs, 30 cervical intraepithelial neoplasm (CIN; CIN 1, 11 cases, CIN II, 3 cases, CIN III 16 cases) and 11 nonneoplastic cervices. EBV was detected by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) for EBNA-1 and in situ hybridization for EBER-1. The p16 methylation-status and the expression of p16 protein were studied by methylation-specific PCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively. The materials were divided into four groups: 1) nonneoplastic cervices, 2) CIN I, 3) CIN II-III and 4) invasive SCCs. p16 methylation and p16 immunoexpressions increased in CIN and invasive SCCs than nonneoplastic tissue. p16-methylation and p16-immunoreactivities were higher in the EBV-positive group (p=0.009, p<0.001) than in the EBV-negative group. EBV was detected more frequently in CIN and SCCs than nonneoplastic cervices. In conclusion, a correlation between p16 methylation, p16 immunoreactivity and the detection of EBV strongly suggested that the cooperation of EBV and p16 gene may play a synergic effect on cell cycle deregulation.

Abstract
We examined whether Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection plays a role in cervical carcinogenesis in Korean women. EBV infection was examined using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) with two different primer pairs flanking the BamHI "W" fragment of EBV and by EBV-encoded small RNAs (EBER) in situ hybridization in various histologic types of cervical cancer, including 17 cases of squamous cell carcinoma, 36 cases of adenocarcinoma, and 3 cases of small-cell carcinoma. We also evaluated 20 cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia and 20 cases of normal uterine cervix. One case of squamous cell carcinoma and three cases of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia were positive for EBV DNA using PCR, but EBER in situ hybridization analysis showed that none of the PCR-positive cases expressed EBER. EBV DNA was not found using PCR in any of the 20 normal uterine cervices. From our results, EBV infection does not seem to play a role in cervical carcinogenesis in Korean women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cervical lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) is a rare variant of squamous cell carcinoma of the cervix. Association with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) is still controversial. EBV has been demonstrated in Asian women with cervical LELC. In Western women, human papillomavirus (HPV) might play a role in the etiology. CASE We describe a 44-year-old Caucasian woman with a lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the cervix without EBV, but in the presence of multiple HPV infection. CONCLUSION Our case supports a possible different pathway of development of cervical LELC in Western women as compared to Asian women.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate the tolerance to vaccination against human papillomavirus (HPV)16 E7 (in SB adjuvant ASO2B) and its histological and immunohistological effects on HPV16 associated high-grade cervical dysplasias associated with HPV16. STUDY DESIGN Five patients with histologically demonstrated severe cervical dysplasia (CIN3) HPV16 positive were injected three times before conization was performed 2 months after the first injection. We studied cytological, histological, proliferative pattern and immune profile before and after vaccination. The slides were compared with those obtained from non-injected patients. RESULTS The injections were well tolerated and the specimens displayed a limited regression of the lesions. Nevertheless, massive CD4 and CD8 T cell lymphocytic infiltration was noticed after vaccination. DISCUSSION We conclude that the vaccination we used provides an obvious immune histological reaction in the HPV infected cervix and that the 2 months delay before the final step (conization) is done is probably too short.

Abstract
Lymphoepithelioma is well known in the nasopharyngeal region. Although this neoplasm is well described in a variety of extranasal sites, where it is termed lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma, this is only the second report of this neoplasm originating in the vulva reported in the literature. These lesions are reported to be less aggressive in extranasal sites. A 40-year-old woman presented with a lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the vulva, diagnosed by excisional biopsy, which had been present for 1 month. The lesion persisted with ipsilateral lymph node involvement 4 months after initial resection, when the patient returned for definitive surgery. Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma can occur rarely in the vulva, and may behave aggressively.

Abstract
CONTEXT It has been proposed that Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) plays a role in the etiology of lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma (LELC) in diverse anatomic locations. In contrast to Asian women, Western women have a low prevalence of LELC of the uterine cervix, and EBV genomes have not been identified. OBJECTIVE To assess the presence of EBV in LELC of the uterine cervix in 4 white Western women. DESIGN We collected 4 cases of LELC of the uterine cervix between 1990 and 2000. We performed histologic and immunohistochemical analyses of formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor samples. We amplified tumor DNA with polymerase chain reaction to detect EBV, human papillomavirus, and simian virus 40 DNAs. RESULTS Immunohistochemically, tumor cells were positive for cytokeratins and showed strong expression of p53 and MIB-1. Staining for the oncoprotein c-Erb-B2 was focally positive, and staining for Bcl-2 and progesterone receptors was negative. Only one case showed focal nuclear staining for estrogen receptors. All cases had a dense infiltrate of mature lymphocytes expressing T-cell antigens CD45RO, CD3, and CD8. Polymerase chain reaction analysis did not detect EBV, human papillomavirus, or simian virus 40 DNA sequences in any of the 4 cases. One case had positive serologic results for anti-EBV antibodies, indicating a mild or chronic infection. CONCLUSIONS LELC of the uterine cervix shows the immunohistochemical profile of an aggressive tumor in spite of its good prognosis, in which CD8 cytotoxic suppressor lymphocytes could play an important role. Based on our results, the role of EBV, human papillomavirus, or simian virus 40 in the pathogenesis of LELC of the uterine cervix in Western women remains unclear.
