Abstract
OBJECTIVES There is an increasing incidence and prevalence of patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) worldwide. Little is known the prevalence of CKD among older patients with schizophrenia. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of CKD and its risk factors in older adults with schizophrenia. METHODS In this cross-sectional study, a convenience sample of 240 patients with schizophrenia age 50 or older were recruited. In addition to demographic and clinical data, participants' estimated glomerular filtration rate was calculated using the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation based on age, sex, ethnicity, and serum creatinine level determined from a blood sample taken from participants. RESULTS The overall prevalence of CKD was 11.3%. Those with CKD group were older, had a longer duration of psychiatric illness, a higher body mass index (BMI), and diagnoses of hypertension compared to those in the non-CKD group. Independent of other risk factors, older age and BMI were significantly associated with CKD. CONCLUSIONS This study found that the overall prevalence of CKD in older patients with schizophrenia was 11.3%. Risk factors for CKD in this population were older age and higher BMI. In addition to early identification and early treatment of CKD in older patients with schizophrenia, clinicians should actively manage the risk factors identified in this study, such as higher BMI and older age.

Abstract
Multidimensional health function impairments are common in older patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). The purpose of this study was to explore whether the risk or severity of geriatric syndrome increased with a decline in renal function. This survey was conducted for CKD patients aged ≥ 60 years and hospitalized at West China Hospital of Sichuan University (Center of Gerontology and Geriatrics, Nephrology, and Endocrinology) and Chengdu Kangfu Kidney Disease Hospital from September 01, 2013 to June 30, 2014. Patients underwent multidimensional individualized assessments by trained doctors. Logistic regression analysis found that the risk of assisted walking (P = 0.001) and urinary incontinence (P = 0.039) increased with a decline in renal function. Regression analysis revealed that the scores of activities of daily living (P = 0.024), nutritional status (P = 0.000), total social support (P = 0.014), and objective support (P = 0.000) decreased with a decline in renal function.

Abstract
BACKGROUND With a global increase in life expectancy around the world, the burden of chronic kidney disease in the elderly is increasing. The number of elderly patients undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD) is also increasing. There is still a perception that PD may be associated with an increased risk of complications in these elderly patients. METHODS A total of 311 patients, of which 103 PD patients aged 65 and over and 208 PD patients under 65 years of age, were followed in a single center and evaluated, retrospectively. Demographic data of these patients, albumin values at first PD and during PD time, residual urine amount, number of peritonitis, time to the first peritonitis attack, PD endpoints, and mortality were compared. RESULTS Peritonitis and technique failure rates were lower in patients aged 65 and over who applied PD (0.61-0.75, 6.8%-23.1%, respectively). There was no difference in peritonitis-free survival (p = 0.931). Need for help HR 2.569 [95%CI 1.564-4.219] (p < 0.05), time to first peritonitis attack HR 0.983 [95%CI 0.974-0.992] (p < 0.05), mean albumin value HR 0.191 [95%CI 0.088-0.413] (p < 0.05), urine output level HR 1.154 [95%CI 1.010-1.318] (p < 0.05) were factors affecting mortality. CONCLUSION Peritonitis and technical survival evaluations of elderly PD patients, other than mortality, were lower than younger PD patients. However, the need for help is one of the biggest obstacles to this method for the elderly. We believe that incentives in this regard will increase the number of elderly PD patients.

Abstract
Despite the advances in therapeutic interventions, solid organ transplantation (SOT) remains the "gold standard" treatment for patients with end-stage organ failure. Recently, vascularized composite allotransplantation (VCA) has reemerged as a feasible treatment option for patients with complex composite tissue defects. In both SOT and VCA, ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI) is inevitable and is a predominant factor that can adversely affect transplant outcome by potentiating early graft dysfunction and/or graft rejection. Restoration of oxygenated blood supply to an organ which was previously hypoxic or ischemic for a period of time triggers cellular oxidative stress, production of both, pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines, infiltration of innate immune cells and amplifies adaptive alloimmune responses in the affected allograft. Currently, Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved drugs for the treatment of IRI are unavailable, therefore an efficacious therapeutic modality to prevent, reduce and/or alleviate allograft damages caused by IRI induced inflammation is warranted to achieve the best-possible transplant outcome among recipients. The tolerogenic capacity of CD4+CD25+FOXP3+ regulatory T cells (Tregs), have been extensively studied in the context of transplant rejection, autoimmunity, and cancer. It was not until recently that Tregs have been recognized as a potential cell therapeutic candidate to be exploited for the prevention and/or treatment of IRI, owing to their immunomodulatory potential. Tregs can mitigate cellular oxidative stress, produce anti-inflammatory cytokines, promote wound healing, and tissue repair and prevent the infiltration of pro-inflammatory immune cells in injured tissues. By using strategic approaches to increase the number of Tregs and to promote targeted delivery, the outcome of SOT and VCA can be improved. This review focuses on two sections: (a) the therapeutic potential of Tregs in preventing and mitigating IRI in the context of SOT and VCA and (b) novel strategies on how Tregs could be utilized for the prevention and/or treatment of IRI.

Abstract
Hemodialysis patients exhibit anemia-related cerebral hyperperfusion and iron deposition (ID). However, the mechanisms underlying the pathology of cerebral ID are not clear. We investigated the role of cerebral blood flow (CBF) in the pathophysiology of cerebral ID in hemodialysis patients with anemia. This study recruited 33 hemodialysis patients with anemia and thirty-three healthy controls (HCs). All the subjects underwent quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) and arterial spin labeling (ASL) to measure ID and CBF in the cerebral nuclei. Furthermore, we evaluated lacunar infarction (LI), cerebral microbleeds, and total white matter hyperintensity volume (TWMHV). Hemodialysis patients with anemia showed significantly higher ID and CBF in some nuclei compared to the HCs after adjusting for age, sex, and total intracranial volume (TIV) [P < 0.05, false discovery rate (FDR) corrected]. CBF showed a positive correlation with ID in both patients and HCs after adjustments for age, gender, and TIV (P < 0.05, FDR corrected). Serum phosphorus, calcium, TWMHV, hypertension, and dialysis duration were independently associated with ID (P < 0.05). Hemoglobin, serum phosphorus, and LI were independently associated with CBF (P < 0.05). Mediation analysis demonstrated that CBF mediated the effects between hemoglobin and ID. Our study demonstrated that CBF mediated aberrant cerebral ID in hemodialysis patients with anemia.

Abstract
Epidemiological data suggest that individuals in all stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) have higher risks of developing cognitive impairment. The relationship between CKD and cognition has been assessed exclusively using glomerular function markers; however, kidney tubule injury has not been assessed. We assessed the association between urinary biomarkers of renal tubular injury and cognitive dysfunction in older patients with CKD Stages 3–4. According to the Montreal Cognitive Assessment, participants were divided into cognitive dysfunction and control groups. Compared with the control group, the cognitive dysfunction group had significantly higher percentages of smokers, noticeably lower average education, and higher mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) levels in the peripheral blood. Spearman correlation analysis showed that higher urine neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin, kidney injury molecule-1, and beta-2 microglobulin (β2M) levels were significantly associated with lower cognitive scores. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that only increased urinary β2M levels were independently associated with cognitive worsening in CKD after adjusting for confounders. Logistic regression identified a promising role of urinary β2M combined with smoking and education for predicting cognitive impairment in CKD. Urinary β2M and cognitive function negatively correlated with mtDNA content, suggesting that mitochondrial dysfunction is a common pathophysiological mechanism linking CKD and cognitive dysfunction.

Abstract
AIM The benefits of dialysis in the older population remain highly debated, particularly for certain dialysis modalities. This study aimed to explore the dialysis modality utilization patterns between in-centre haemodialysis (ICHD), peritoneal dialysis (PD) and home haemodialysis (HHD) and their association with outcomes in older persons. METHODS Older persons (≥75 years) initiating dialysis in Australia and New Zealand from 1999 to 2018 reported to the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant (ANZDATA) registry were included. The main aim of the study was to characterize dialysis modality utilization patterns and describe individual characteristics of each pattern. Relationships between identified patterns and survival, causes of death and withdrawal were examined as secondary analyses, where the pattern was considered as the exposure. RESULTS A total of 10 306 older persons initiated dialysis over the study period. Of these, 6776 (66%) and 1535 (15%) were exclusively treated by ICHD and PD, respectively, while 136 (1%) ever received HHD during their dialysis treatment course. The remainder received both ICHD and PD: 906 (9%) started dialysis on ICHD and 953 (9%) on PD. Different individual characteristics were seen across dialysis modality utilization patterns. Median survival time was 3.0 (95%CI 2.9-3.1) years. Differences in survival were seen across groups and varied depending on the time period following dialysis initiation. Dialysis withdrawal was an important cause of death and varied according to individual characteristics and utilization patterns. CONCLUSION This study showed that dialysis modality utilization patterns in older persons are associated with mortality, independent of individual characteristics.

Prevalence and Associated Factors of Frailty and Mortality in Patients with End-Stage Renal Disease Undergoing Hemodialysis: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis. Abstract
Hemodialysis is the most common type of treatment for end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Frailty is associated with poor outcomes such as higher mortality. ESRD patients have a higher prevalence of frailty. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to identify the prevalence and associated factors of frailty and examine whether it is a predictor of mortality among ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis. Five electronic databases including PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Cochrane Library were searched for relevant studies up to 30 November 2020. A total of 752 articles were found, and seven studies with 2604 participants in total were included in the final analysis. The pooled prevalence of frailty in patients with ESRD undergoing hemodialysis was 46% (95% Confidence interval (CI) 34.2−58.3%). Advanced age, female sex, and the presence of diabetes mellitus increased the risk of frailty in ESRD patients undergoing hemodialysis. Our main finding showed that patients with frailty had a greater risk of all-cause mortality compared with those without (hazard ratio (HR): 2.02, 95% CI: 1.65−2.48). To improve ESRD patient outcomes, healthcare professionals need to assess the frailty of older ESRD patients, particularly by considering gender and comorbidities. Comprehensive frailty screening tools for ESRD patients on hemodialysis need to be developed.

Abstract
AIM With improved life expectancy over time, the burden of kidney failure resulting in kidney replacement therapy (KRT) in older persons is increasing. This study aimed to describe the age distribution at dialysis initiation in Australia and New Zealand (ANZ) across centres and over time. METHODS Adults initiating dialysis as first KRT in ANZ from 1999 to 2018 reported to the Australia and New Zealand Dialysis and Transplant (ANZDATA) Registry were included. The primary outcomes were the age distribution and the proportion of older persons (75 years and older) initiating dialysis across centres and over time. Secondary outcomes were characterization of the older population compared with younger people and differences in dialysis modality and treatment trajectories between groups. RESULTS Over the study period, 55 382 people initiated dialysis as first KRT, including 10 306 older persons, in 100 centres. Wide variation in age distribution across states/countries was noted, although the proportion of older persons at dialysis initiation did not significantly change over time (from 13% in 1999 to 19% in 2003, then remaining stable thereafter). Older persons were less likely to be treated with home therapies compared with younger people. Older persons were mostly Caucasians; had higher socioeconomic position, more cardiovascular comorbidities and higher eGFR at baseline; and resided in major cities. Higher proportions of older persons per centre were noted in privately funded facilities. CONCLUSION Wide variations were noted in the proportions of older persons initiating dialysis across centres and states/country, which were associated with different case-mix across regions, particularly in terms of ethnicity, remoteness and socioeconomic advantage.

Abstract
The significant increase of periodontitis, chronic kidney disease (CKD), Alzheimer's disease and cancer can be attributed to an ageing population. Each disease produces a range of biomarkers that can be indicative of disease onset and progression. Biomarkers are defined as cellular (intra/extracellular components and whole cells), biochemical (metabolites, ions and toxins) or molecular (nucleic acids, proteins and lipids) alterations which are measurable in biological media such as human tissues, cells or fluids. An interesting group of biomarkers that merit further investigation are the polyamines. Polyamines are a group of molecules consisting of cadaverine, putrescine, spermine and spermidine and have been implicated in the development of a range of systemic diseases, in part due to their production in periodontitis. Cadaverine and putrescine within the periodontal environment have demonstrated cell signalling interfering abilities, by way of leukocyte migration disruption. The polyamines spermine and spermidine in tumour cells have been shown to inhibit cellular apoptosis, effectively prolonging tumorigenesis and continuation of cancer within the host. Polyamine degradation products such as acrolein have been shown to exacerbate renal damage in CKD patients. Thus, the use of such molecules has merit to be utilized in the early indication of such diseases in patients.

Abstract
This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of a structured intervention on the frequency of self-care behaviors with arteriovenous fistula (AVF) by patients on hemodialysis. This is a quasi-experimental study with pre- and post-measurements. Participants were assigned to an intervention group (IG) (n = 48) or to a control group (CG) (n = 41). IG patients were subject to a structured intervention on self-care with AVF (SISC-AVF) consisting of both a theoretical and a practical part. After SISC-AVF application, patients in the IG showed better overall self-care behaviors with AVF than patients in the CG (79.2% and 91.4%, respectively, p < .001) as well as better self-care concerning both the management of signs and symptoms (90.1% and 94.4% respectively, p = .004) and the prevention of complications (72.7% and 89.5%, respectively, p < .001). The study results suggest that the SISC-AVF had positive effects on patients in the IG.

Abstract
Objective We assessed the consistency of noninvasive and invasive measurements of
central arterial pressure (CAP) and the difference between peripheral
brachial artery pressure and CAP in patients with chronic kidney disease
(CKD) undergoing versus not undergoing hemodialysis. Methods This single-center cross-sectional study was performed from May to December
2018. The patients were divided into a control group (n = 50), CKD group
(stages 3–5, n = 50), and dialysis group (n = 20), and all underwent
measurement of peripheral humeral arterial pressure and noninvasive and
invasive measurement of CAP. Group differences and correlations between CAP
and peripheral arterial pressure were assessed. Results The consistency between noninvasive and invasive CAP was better in the
control and CKD groups than in the dialysis group. In the dialysis group,
the noninvasive equipment underestimated the actual CAP. The CAP was close
to the peripheral brachial artery pressure in the dialysis group, while the
CAP was significantly lower than the peripheral brachial artery pressure in
the control and CKD groups. Conclusion Noninvasive equipment underestimates the actual CAP in patients undergoing
dialysis and should be used with caution. The difference between the
peripheral arterial pressure and CAP was smaller in patients undergoing
dialysis than in patients with CKD and controls.

Abstract
Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) places a heavy burden on the healthcare system worldwide. The risk factors may vary by body adiposity. We aimed to investigate the associations of socioeconomic, environmental, and behavioral factors with CKD in different groups of body mass indexes (BMI). Methods: A case-control study was conducted in 3280 participants (1048 CKD and 2232 non-CKD) from seven hospitals and nearby communities from May 2012 to August 2015. Personal characteristics, anthropometrics, environmental exposures, and health-related behaviors were assessed using a structured questionnaire. The logistic regression models were utilized for analysis. Results: Older age (odd ratio, OR = 2.85; p < 0.001), being men (OR = 4.23; p < 0.001), smoking (OR = 3.36; p < 0.001), stable income (OR = 0.33; p < 0.001), higher education (OR = 0.37~0.38; p < 0.001), and daily adequate water intake (OR = 0.64; p = 0.010) were associated with CKD in normal weight people. Older age (OR = 2.49; p < 0.001), being men (OR = 3.36; p < 0.001), education (OR = 0.44, p = 0.004), hypertension (OR = 2.93; p<0.001), diabetes (OR = 1.83; p = 0.004), and using traditional Chinese medicine (OR = 2.03, p = 0.014) were associated with CKD in overweight people. Older age (OR = 2.71; p < 0.001), being men (OR = 2.69; p < 0.001), hypertension (OR = 2.93; p < 0.001), diabetes (OR = 1.94; p = 0.001) were associated with CKD in obese people. Conclusions: The associated factors of CKD varied by different groups of BMI. These findings may help to develop potential interventions to manage CKD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The prevailing diagnostic criteria for CKD are age-independent, but have been challenged in light of the eGFR decline associated with normal aging. The stages of CKD communicate magnitude of risk of ESRD, cardiovascular morbidity, and mortality. AIMS This study aims to provide more insight into the morbidity and mortality associated with eGFR levels corresponding to the current CKD stages in older adults. METHODS The 2931 older adults in the Good Aging in Skåne study were randomized from the general population. The exposure variable used was eGFR level (CKD-EPI based on creatinine and cystatin C) with eGFR 60-89 mL/min/1.73 m2 as a reference; the outcomes were mortality, acute cardiovascular disease, congestive heart failure, and rapid kidney function decline (RKFD; defined as a decline in eGFR by 3 mL/min/1.73 m2 per year or more). RESULTS The mean age at baseline was 73 (SD 11) and mean follow-up time 11 (SD 5) years. Mortality was higher at lower eGFR levels with adjusted HR (95% CI) being 1.58 (1.34-1.88), 1.22 (1.05-1.41), 1 (reference), and 0.90 (0.67-1.21) for eGFR < 45, 45-59, 60-89 and ≥ 90 mL/min/1.73 m2, respectively. For acute CVD the adjusted HR (95% CI) were 1.23 (0.81-1.87), 1.21 (0.87-1.69), 1 (reference), and 0.53 (0.28-1.00) for the same eGFR levels. CONCLUSIONS This study confirms that mortality in older adults increases with decreasing eGFR at eGFR levels below today's threshold for CKD. The correlation was less certain for lower eGFR and incident cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
Background Epidemiologic evidence has emerged to reveal an association of albuminuria and low estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) with dementia, but the findings are inconsistent. In addition, there are limited studies addressing the association between albuminuria and Alzheimer disease (AD). Methods and Results A total of 1562 community‐dwelling Japanese subjects aged ≥60 years without dementia were followed up for 10 years. The outcomes were incidence of all‐cause dementia and its subtypes, namely, AD and vascular dementia (VaD). The hazard ratios for the outcomes were estimated according to urine albumin–creatinine ratio (UACR) and eGFR levels using a Cox proportional hazards model. During the follow‐up, 358 subjects developed all‐cause dementia (238 AD and 93 VaD). Higher UACR level was significantly associated with greater multivariable‐adjusted risks of all‐cause dementia (hazard ratios [95% confidence intervals]: 1.00 [reference], 1.12 [0.78–1.60], 1.65 [1.18–2.30], and 1.56 [1.11–2.19] for UACR of ≤6.9, 7.0–12.7, 12.8–29.9, and ≥30.0 mg/g, respectively), AD (1.00 [reference], 1.20 [0.77–1.86], 1.75 [1.16–2.64], and 1.58 [1.03–2.41], respectively), and VaD (1.00 [reference], 1.03 [0.46–2.29], 1.94 [0.96–3.95], and 2.19 [1.09–4.38], respectively). On the other hand, lower eGFR level was marginally associated with greater risk of VaD, but not AD. Subjects with UACR ≥12.8 mg/g and eGFR of <60 mL/min per 1.73 m2 had 3.3‐fold greater risk of VaD than those with UACR <12.8 mg/g and eGFR of ≥60 mL/min per 1.73 m2. Conclusions Albuminuria is a significant risk factor for the development of both AD and VaD in community‐dwelling Japanese elderly. Moreover, albuminuria and low eGFR are mutually associated with a greater risk of VaD.

Abstract
AIMS Previous studies have indicated the link of bilirubin levels and risk of developing chronic kidney disease (CKD); however, the findings were inconsistent. METHODS We searched for cohort studies examining bilirubin as an exposure and CKD as an outcome in the Medline, EMBASE, and Web of Science databases from inception through November 31, 2016. A generalized least-squares approach was applied to assess the dose-response relationship between them by pooling rate ratios with 95% confidence intervals. Subgroup analyses, sensitivity analysis, meta-regression, and publication bias were also conducted. RESULTS Seven cohort studies with 1316 cases and 21,076 participants were identified for inclusion in the meta-analysis. The combined RR for the highest versus lowest bilirubin level was 0.36 (95% CI 0.19-0.68; P heterogeneity = 0.001; Power = 0.72; n = 6). In the linear dose-response analysis, each 1-μmol/L increase in bilirubin was associated with a 5% reduced risk of CKD (RR = 0.95; 95% CI 0.92-0.97; P for trend test = 0.113; P heterogeneity = 0.001; Power = 0.99; n = 7). The subgroup analyses and sensitivity analyses showed consistent results, and publication bias may exist. CONCLUSION This meta-analysis suggests that elevated bilirubin level may be associated with decreased risk of developing CKD.

Abstract
PURPOSE As the world's population ages, the incidence of chronic kidney disease (CKD) is growing. There is ongoing debate regarding whether high levels of parathyroid hormone (PTH) would be more common in elderly than young patients, and which factors are driven the risk of secondary hyperparathyroidism (SHPT), independent of renal function. METHODS Elderly patients (age ≥ 65 years, N = 518) were compared to a 1:1 sex- and estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR)-matched sample of young patients (age < 65 years), in a cross-sectional analysis. Demographic, biochemical and drug prescription data were collected from electronic charts. The main outcome measure was the prevalence of SHPT, defined as PTH > 65 pg/mL. RESULTS Elderly patients presented higher serum calcium and PTH levels and lower serum phosphate, and were taking more diuretics than young patients. SHPT was more frequent among elderly patients (49.4 vs. 38.6%, p = 0.005), and it was associated with lower eGFR, low levels of 25(OH) vitamin D and with furosemide therapy, while thiazide use was a protector factor. Elderly patients with 25(OH) vitamin D > 40 ng/mL were protected against SHPT. The Ca/PTH ratio was lower in elderly than in young patients [0.15 (0.10, 0.20) vs. 0.16 (0.11, 0.23), respectively, p = 0.003]. CONCLUSION CKD elderly patients have higher risk of SHPT than young, which cannot be explained solely by renal function. Besides low levels of vitamin D, furosemide therapy and a distinct relationship between calcium and PTH are possible factors contributing to SHPT. Whether this is a result of renal resistance to PTH or an altered set point to calcium deserves further investigation.

Abstract
Lymphangiogenesis is correlated with the degree of renal interstitial fibrosis. Pro-fibrotic transforming growth factor β induces VEGF-C production, the main driver of lymphangiogenesis. Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) is an important determinant of fibrotic tissue remodeling, but its possible involvement in lymphangiogenesis has not been explored. We found prominent lymphangiogenesis during tubulointerstitial fibrosis to be associated with increased expression of CTGF and VEGF-C in human obstructed nephropathy as well as in diabetic kidney disease. Using CTGF knockout mice, we investigated the involvement of CTGF in development of fibrosis and associated lymphangiogenesis in obstructive nephropathy. The increase of lymphatic vessels and VEGF-C in obstructed kidneys was significantly reduced in CTGF knockout compared to wild-type mice. Also in mouse kidneys subjected to ischemia-reperfusion injury, CTGF knockdown was associated with reduced lymphangiogenesis. In vitro, CTGF induced VEGF-C production in HK-2 cells, while CTGF siRNA suppressed transforming growth factor β1-induced VEGF-C upregulation. Furthermore, surface plasmon resonance analysis showed that CTGF and VEGF-C directly interact. Interestingly, VEGF-C-induced capillary-like tube formation by human lymphatic endothelial cells was suppressed by full-length CTGF but not by naturally occurring proteolytic CTGF fragments. Thus, CTGF is significantly involved in fibrosis-associated renal lymphangiogenesis through regulation of, and direct interaction with, VEGF-C.

Abstract
AIM: The basic aim of this study was to discover the association of End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) with various risk factors. End Stage Renal Failure is the last stage of the chronic renal failure in which kidneys become completely fail to function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The data were collected from the patients of renal diseases from three major hospitals in Peshawar, Pakistan. Odds ratio analysis was performed to examine the relationship of ESRD (a binary response variable) with various risk factors: Gender, Diabetic, Hypertension, Glomerulonephritis, Obstructive Nephropathy, Polycystic kidney disease, Myeloma, SLE Nephritis, Heredity, Hepatitis, Excess use of Drugs, heart problem and Anemia. RESULTS: Using odds ratio analysis, the authors found that the ESRD in diabetic patients was 11.04 times more than non-diabetic patients and the ESRD were 7.29 times less in non-hypertensive patients as compared to hypertensive patients. Similarly, glomerulonephritis patients had 3.115 times more risk of having ESRD than non-glomerulonephritis. Other risk factors may also, to some extent, were causes of ESRD but turned out insignificant due to stochastic sample. CONCLUSION: The authors concluded that there is a strong association between ESRD and three risk factors, namely diabetes, hypertension and glomerulonephritis.
