Abstract
AIMS Hypertriglyceridemia is a risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, whether or not it predicts the risk of CKD progression is unknown. This study evaluated the association between serum triglyceride (TG) levels and kidney disease progression in patients with non-dialysis-dependent CKD. METHODS The Fukuoka Kidney disease Registry (FKR) study was a multicenter, prospective longitudinal cohort study. In total, 4,100 patients with CKD were followed up for 5 years. The primary outcome was the incidence of CKD progression, defined as a ≥ 1.5-fold increase in serum creatinine level or the development of end-stage kidney disease. The patients were divided into quartiles according to baseline serum TG levels under non-fasting conditions: Q1 <87 mg/dL; Q2, 87-120 mg/dL; Q3, 121-170 mg/dL, and Q4 >170 mg/dL. RESULTS During the 5-year observation period, 1,410 patients met the criteria for CKD progression. The multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazards model showed a significant association between high serum TG level and the risk of CKD progression in the model without macroalbuminuria as a covariate (multivariable hazard ratio[HR] for Q4 versus Q1, 1.20; 95% CI, 1.03-1.41; P=0.022), but the significance disappeared after adjusting for macroalbuminuria (HR for Q4 versus Q1, 1.06; 95% CI, 0.90-1.24; P=0.507). CONCLUSIONS The present findings suggest that individuals with high serum TG levels are more likely to develop CKD progression than those without; however, whether or not higher serum TG levels reflect elevated macroalbuminuria or lead to CKD progression via elevated macroalbuminuria is unclear.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This analysis investigated the role of hypertriglyceridemia on renal function decline and development of end-stage kidney disease (ESKD) in a real-world clinical setting. METHODS A retrospective analysis using administrative databases of 3 Italian Local Health Units was performed searching patients with at least one plasma triglyceride (TG) measurement between 2013 and June 2020, followed-up until June 2021. Outcome measures included reduction in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) ≥30% from baseline and ESKD onset. Subjects with normal (normal-TG), high (HTG) and very high TG levels (vHTG) (respectively <150 mg/dL, 150-500 mg/dL and >500 mg/dL) were comparatively evaluated. RESULTS Overall 45,000 subjects (39,935 normal-TGs, 5,029 HTG and 36 vHTG) with baseline eGFR of 96.0 ± 66.4 mL/min were considered. The incidence of eGFR reduction was 27.1 and 31.1 and 35.1 per 1000 person-years, in normal-TG, HTG and vHTG subjects, respectively (P<0.01). The incidence of ESKD was 0.7 and 0.9 per 1000 person-years, in normal-TG and HTG/vHTG subjects, respectively (P<0.01). Univariate and multivariate analyses revealed that HTG subjects had a risk of eGFR reduction or ESKD occurrence (composite endpoint) increased by 48% compared to normal-TG subjects (adjusted OR:1.485, 95%CI 1.300-1.696; P<0.001). Moreover, each 50 mg/dL increase in TG levels resulted in significantly greater risk of eGFR reduction (OR:1.062, 95%CI 1.039-1.086 P<0.001) and ESKD (OR:1.174, 95%CI 1.070-1.289, P = 0.001). CONCLUSIONS This real-word analysis in a large cohort of individuals with low-to-moderate cardiovascular risk suggests that moderate-to-severe elevation of plasma TG levels is associated with a significantly increased risk of long-term kidney function deterioration.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There may be nontraditional pathways of chronic kidney disease (CKD) progression that are complementary to classical pathways. Therefore, we aimed to examine nontraditional risk factors for incident CKD and its progression. METHODS We used the generally healthy population (n = 4382) starting at age 27-41 years in the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults (CARDIA) cohort, which is an observational longitudinal study. Nontraditional risk factors included forced vital capacity, inflammation, serum urate, and serum carotenoids. CKD risk category was classified using the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) measured in 1995-1996 and repeated every 5 years for 20 years: No CKD, low risk, moderate risk, high risk, and very high risk. RESULTS At baseline, 84.8% had no CKD (eGFR ≥60 mL/min/1.73 m2 and UACR <10 mg/g), 10.3% were in the low risk (eGFR ≥60 and UACR 10-29), and 4.9% had CKD (eGFR <60 and/or UACR ≥ 30). Nontraditional risk factors were significantly associated with the progression of CKD to higher categories. Hazard ratios per standard deviation of the predictor for incident CKD and its progression from the No CKD and low and moderate risk into CKD were inverse for forced vital capacity and serum carotenoids and positive for serum urate, GlycA, and C-reactive protein, the first 3 even after adjustment for conventional risk factors. CONCLUSION Several nontraditional markers were significantly associated with an increased risk of progression to higher CKD categories in generally healthy young to middle-aged adults.

Abstract
Previous cohort studies have reported conflicting associations between alcohol consumption and chronic kidney disease, characterized by proteinuria and low glomerular filtration rate (GFR). This systematic review, which included 14,634,940 participants from 11 cohort studies, assessed a dose-dependent association of alcohol consumption and incidence of proteinuria and low estimated GFR (eGFR) of <60 mL/min/1.73 m2. Compared with non-drinkers, the incidence of proteinuria was lower in drinkers with alcohol consumption of ≤12.0 g/day (relative risk 0.87 [95% confidence interval 0.83, 0.92]), but higher in drinkers with alcohol consumption of 36.1–60.0 g/day (1.09 [1.03, 1.15]), suggesting a J-shaped association between alcohol consumption and the incidence of proteinuria. Incidence of low eGFR was lower in drinkers with alcohol consumption of ≤12.0 and 12.1–36.0 than in non-drinkers (≤12.0, 12.1–36.0, and 36.1–60.0 g/day: 0.93 [0.90, 0.95], 0.82 [0.78, 0.86], and 0.89 [0.77, 1.03], respectively), suggesting that drinkers were at lower risk of low eGFR. In conclusion, compared with non-drinkers, mild drinkers were at lower risk of proteinuria and low eGFR, whereas heavy drinkers had a higher risk of proteinuria but a lower risk of low eGFR. The clinical impact of high alcohol consumption should be assessed in well-designed studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dyslipidemia is closely related to kidney disease. We aimed to investigate the relationship between low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and prognosis of IgA nephropathy (IgAN) and build a nomogram prognostic model. METHODS 519 IgAN patients with 61 months median follow-up were enrolled and divided into two groups based on the cut-off value of baseline LDL-C (2.60 mmol/L): the high group (n=253) and the low group (n=266). Renal survival was assessed by Kaplan⁃Meier (KM) survival curve. Risk factors were identified by COX regression analysis. The area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves (AUC), concordance index (C-index), and calibration curves were applied to evaluate the nomogram model. RESULTS KM survival curve analysis showed that the high LDL-C group had worse renal survival than the low LDL-C group (χ2 = 8.555, p=0.003). After adjusting for confounding factors, Cox regression analysis showed the baseline LDL-C level was an independent risk factor of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) in IgAN (HR=3.135, 95% CI 1.240~7.926, p =0.016). LDL-C, segmental sclerosis, tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis, the prevalence of cardiovascular disease, 24-hour proteinuria were identified and entered into the nomogram models, with AUC of 0.864, 0.827, and 0.792 respectively to predict the 5-, 8-, and 10-year risk of ESRD in IgAN. The C-index of this prediction model was respectively 0.862, 0.838, and 0.800 and was well-calibrated. CONCLUSION Elevated LDL-C level is a predictive factor for the prognosis of IgAN. We developed a nomogram model that can predict the risk of ESRD in IgAN by using LDL-C ≥ 2.60 mmol/L.

Abstract
To investigate whether high serum triglycerides (TG) level is associated with adverse renal outcomes in patients with non-dialysis chronic kidney disease (CKD), a total of 2,158 subjects from a prospective cohort study (Korean Cohort Study for Outcome in Patients With Chronic Kidney Disease) were divided into the quartile by serum TG level. The primary outcomes were composite renal events, which is defined as a composite of decline of kidney function (the first occurrence of > 50% decline of estimated glomerular filtration rate or doubling of serum creatinine from the baseline) or onset of end-stage renal disease (initiation of dialysis or kidney transplantation). During the median follow-up of 6.940 years, the cumulative incidence of composite renal event was significantly differed by serum TG level in Kaplan-Meier curve analysis (P < 0.001, by Log-rank test). Cox regression analysis demonstrated that, compared to that of the 1st quartile, the risk of composite renal event was significantly higher in the 4th quartile (adjusted hazard ratio 1.433, 95% confidence interval 1.046 to 1.964). The association between high serum TG level and adverse renal outcome remained consistent in the cause-specific hazard model. Subgroup analyses revealed that the association is modified by age, estimated glomerular filtration rate, and spot urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio. In conclusion, high serum TG level is independently associated with adverse renal outcomes in patients with non-dialysis CKD. Interventional studies are warranted to determine whether lowering serum TG levels may alter the natural course of CKD.

Abstract
Growing evidence has demonstrated an association between nondialysis chronic kidney disease and cancer incidence, although the association between trace proteinuria and cancer death remains unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between trace proteinuria and cancer death in a community-based population in Japan. This was a prospective cohort study of 377,202 adults who participated in the Japanese Specific Health Check and Guidance System from 2008 to 2011. Exposure was dipstick proteinuria categorized as − (negative), ± (trace), 1 + (mild), or ≥ 2 + (moderate to heavy). Outcome was cancer death based on information from the national database of death certificates. Adjusted Cox hazard regression model was used to evaluate the associations between trace proteinuria and cancer death. During median follow-up of 3.7 years, 3056 cancer deaths occurred, corresponding to overall cancer death rate of 21.7/10,000 person-years. In the fully adjusted model, risk of cancer death increased significantly in each successive category of proteinuria: hazard ratio (HR) (95% confidence interval [95% CI]) for risk of cancer death was 1.16 (1.03–1.31), 1.47 (1.27–1.70), and 1.61 (1.33–1.96) for trace, mild, and moderate to heavy proteinuria, respectively. Sensitivity analyses revealed a similar association between trace proteinuria and cancer death, and participants with trace proteinuria had greater risk of mortality from hematological cancers (HR: 1.59 [95% CI: 1.09–2.31]). Both mild to heavy and trace proteinuria were significantly associated with risk of mortality from cancer in a general population.

Abstract
Background The hypertriglyceridemic waist (HTGW) phenotype has been proposed to be related to the occurrence and progression of chronic kidney disease (CKD). The ageing trend of the Chinese population continues to intensify, and elderly individuals are at high risk of CKD. The purpose of this study was to investigate the cross-sectional and longitudinal associations between the HTGW phenotype and the risk of CKD by following community-dwelling adults aged 60 years and older in Tianjin, China, for 7 years. Methods This study was an observational cohort study conducted between 2013 and 2019. Of 2050 participants aged 60 years and older who underwent an annual health examination in 2013, 1605 individuals with complete data were enrolled in the cross-sectional analysis. Among them, 1271 individuals were observed until 2019. Detailed follow-up records were available for 816 participants, of whom 600 participants without CKD at baseline were eligible for inclusion in the retrospective analysis. The HTGW phenotype was defined as a waist circumference of 90 cm or more and triglyceride concentrations of 2.0 mmol/L or more in males or a waist circumference of 85 cm or more and triglyceride concentrations of 1.5 mmol/L or more in females. CKD was defined as an estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73m2 and/or proteinuria (urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio (ACR) ≥ 30 mg/g). Multivariable logistic regression analyses were performed to evaluate the relationship between the HTGW phenotype and CKD. Results In 2013, the prevalence of CKD among older adults was 31.03%, and the prevalence of CKD in the HTGW phenotype group was 37.81%. Over a 7-year observation period, 195 individuals developed CKD, with an incidence rate of 32.50%. Statistically significant associations were observed between the HTGW phenotype and CKD in older adults in both cross-sectional surveys and retrospective analyses, with odds ratios and 95% confidence intervals of 1.38 (95% CI: 1.03–1.86, P = 0.033) and 2.27 (95% CI: 1.30–3.97, P = 0.004), respectively, after adjustment for confounders. Conclusions In this community-based cohort study, the HTGW phenotype was confirmed to be independently associated with an increased risk of prevalent and incident CKD in older adults aged 60 years and above in Tianjin, China. Abstract
PURPOSE Hyperuricemia (HUA) and hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) were very common in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and associated with accelerated progression of CKD. This was a retrospective, cross-sectional study which aimed to explore the relationship between serum uric acid levels or triglyceride levels and tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis (proven by renal biopsy). METHODS The present study enrolled 229 CKD individuals who included 127 biopsy-proven primary IgA nephrology (IgAN) patients and 102 biopsy-proven primary membranous nephropathy (MN) patients. The baseline characteristics at the time of the kidney biopsy were collected. According to the serum uric acid (UA) or triglyceride (TG) whether it exceeds the normal reference range, patients were divided into non-HUA (n = 127), HUA (n = 102), non-HTG (n = 119), and HTG group (n = 110). Based on the extent of tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis, patients were divided into no/mild injury (T0, n = 127), moderate injury (T1, n = 102). Multivariable logistic regression for factors predicting moderate tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis was performed. RESULTS There were 127 IgAN and 102 MN cases among 229 patients in the present study. The prevalence of HUA was 44.5% (n = 102), 40.9% (n = 52), and 49.0% (n = 50) in all patients, IgAN patients and MN patients, respectively (P = 1.49). The prevalence of HTG was 48.0% (n = 110), 29.9% (n = 38), and 70.6% (n = 72) (P < 0.001), respectively, as well. Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that HUA and HTG were independent risk factors for moderate tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis (HUA OR = 2.335, 95% CI = 1.147-4.755, P = 0.019; HTG OR = 2.646, 95% CI = 1.289-5.432, P = 0.008). The area under curve (AUC) of model 1 (HUA + eGFR + HTG + age + serum globulin + 24 h urinary protein, AUC = 0.876) was larger than the other two models; however, there was no significant difference among these models (all P > 0.05). CONCLUSIONS Hyperuricemia and hypertriglyceridemia, which were prevalent in CKD patients, were the independent risk factors for moderate tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis. HUA together with HTG could improve the value of diagnosis for moderate tubular atrophy/interstitial fibrosis to some extent.

Abstract
We aimed to investigate the hypothesis that serum triglyceride (TG) may be an independent predictor of early-onset peritonitis and prognosis in incident continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) patients.In this retrospective, observational study, we screened 291 adults admitted to the PD center of the Wuhan No. 1 hospital from August 1, 2013 to November 31, 2017. All biochemical data were collected at the first 1 to 3 months after the initiation of CAPD. Early-onset peritonitis was defined as peritonitis occurring within 6 months after the initiation of PD. All of PD patients were followed up to July 31, 2018. The primary endpoint was the incidence of early-onset peritonitis while the second endpoints included overall mortality and technical failure.A total of 38 patients occurred early-onset PD peritonitis and the Lasso logistic regression selected TG and age in the final model for early-onset peritonitis. We divided patients into two groups based on the median baseline TG levels: TG ≥ 1.4mmo/L group (n = 143) and TG < 1.4mmol/L group (n = 148). There were 34 (11.7%) patients died and 33 (11.3%) patients transferred to hemodialysis during the follow-up, Moreover, a level of TG ≥ 1.4mmol/L at the initiation of CAPD was associated with a significantly increased probability of technical failure (hazard ratio, HR, 1.30; 95% confidence interval, 95% CI, 1.09 to 2.19, P = .043) and overall mortality (HR, 2.33; 95% CI, 1.16-4.72, P = .018).Serum TG levels measured at the initiation of PD therapy is an independent predictor of early-onset peritonitis and prognosis of CAPD patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Traditional risk factors for chronic kidney disease (CKD) include diabetes mellitus (DM), hypertension (HTN), and metabolic syndrome, which are health conditions related to obesity. We aimed to investigate which of the three obesity indices has the strongest association with CKD and to explore whether there are gender differences in these relationships in the middle-aged and elderly Taiwanese population. METHODS This was a cross-sectional, community-based study. It included 400 residents (141 males and 259 females, age 50-90 years) residing in a community in northern Taiwan. Each participant was asked to fill a questionnaire that collected personal information, medical history, medication use, and anthropometric measurements. The laboratory data were obtained by testing the blood and urine samples. The baseline characteristics were compared, and the obesity indices included body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and visceral adiposity index (VAI). CKD was defined as the presence of renal dysfunction (urine albumin-creatinine ratio ≥ 30 mg/g) or estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) < 60 mL/min/1.73m2. We used a multiple logistic regression model to evaluate the association between each obesity index and CKD for both genders. Further, we used the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve (AUC) to examine the best obesity indices to predict CKD in different genders. RESULTS The average age of the subjects was 64.47 ± 8.45 years, and men were significantly older. CKD was found in 31 (22.0%) males and 50 (19.3%) females. In men, there was no significant difference between the CKD and non-CKD groups among the three obesity indices. However, in women, only VAI was significantly higher in subjects with CKD (1.9 [1.1, 3.4]) than in subjects without CKD (1.5 [1.0, 2.2]) (p-value = 0.03). The multivariate logistic regression revealed that even after adjusting for possible confounding factors, VAI was found to be an independent risk factor for CKD in women (OR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.04-1.69, p = 0.02), but not in men (OR: 1.20, 95% CI: 0.85-1.69, p = 0.30). The AUC of VAI had a significant ability to predict CKD in women but not in men. CONCLUSION Our results showed that among the three obesity indices, VAI had the strongest association with CKD compared to BMI and WC in women. In addition, VAI in women should be given more importance in the screening for CKD among the middle-aged and elderly Taiwanese population.

Abstract
Background According to the “lipid nephrotoxicity hypothesis”, there is now significant research being conducted in this area. By studying the role of hyperlipidemia in chronic kidney disease in the general Zhejiang population, we aimed to explore the correlation between changes in blood lipid levels and chronic kidney disease. Methods We collected and analyzed clinical data from ordinary residents who participated in the annual comprehensive physical examination with no overt kidney disease in Zhejiang Provincial People’s Hospital, China from January 2011 to December 2016. According to triglyceride, total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein levels, participants were respectively divided into 4 groups. Statistical methods were used to evaluate the correlation between different blood lipid profiles and chronic kidney disease. Results Five thousand one hundred eighty-three participants were included in our study. During the six-year follow-up period, 227 participants (4.4%) developed chronic kidney disease. The odds ratio for incident chronic kidney disease was 3.14 (95%CI: 1.53–6.43) in Q3, 3.84 (95%CI: 1.90–7.76) in Q4 according to the total cholesterol group and 1.17 (95%CI: 1.04–1.32) in Q3, 1.40 (95%CI: 1.11–2.48) in Q4 according to the low-density lipoprotein group, respectively, after multivariable-adjusted analyses. According to the triglyceride grouping, the odds ratio for incident chronic kidney disease was 2.88 (95%CI: 1.29–6.43) in Q2, 2.92 (95%CI: 1.44–6.57) in Q3 and 3.08 (95%CI: 1.11–6.69) in Q4, after multivariable-adjusted analyses. Conclusion Increased triglycerides and high levels of total cholesterol and low-density lipoprotein were independently associated with an increased likelihood of estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) decline and development of incident chronic kidney disease in the general Zhejiang population.

The role of hypertriglyceridemia and treatment patterns in the progression of IgA nephropathy with a high proportion of global glomerulosclerosis. Int Urol Nephrol 2020; 52:325-335. Abstract
PURPOSE Many studies have focused on finding predictors for mild IgAN progression. However, the cases of severe IgAN with a high proportion of global glomerulosclerosis have received inadequate attention. METHODS A group of 172 primary IgAN patients with 50-75% global glomerulosclerosis was studied retrospectively between April 2007 and October 2017. Patients were divided into three groups according to the serum triglyceride tertiles: < 1.42 µmol/L (Group 1), 1.42-2.29 µmol/L (Group 2), and > 2.29 µmol/L (Group 3). Groups 1 and 2 comprised non-hypertriglyceridemia subjects, while Group 3 was defined as the hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) group. The patients were followed for 4-96 months (median 39.43 months). The study end point was defined as a 50% decline in estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) or ESRD. RESULTS A high proportion of global glomerulosclerosis is not absolutely correlated with severe clinical features and poor renal outcome. In our retrospective observation, eGFR decreased by less than 10% of the baseline during follow-up in 43.6% of the patients. However, in our patients with HTG, the cumulative renal survival rate was significantly lower compared to those without HTG. Multivariate Cox regression analysis also showed that triglyceride is an independent predictor of poor renal outcomes. Furthermore, in the HTG group, the cumulative renal survival rates were higher in patients treated with Tripterygium wilfordii Hook F (TwHF) compared to those without TwHF. CONCLUSIONS A high proportion of global glomerulosclerosis combined with HTG at biopsy have better predictive validity for the disease progression of IgAN than global glomerulosclerosis alone. TwHF may partially affect the renal outcome of severe IgAN with HTG, and this may relate to its regulation of lipid metabolism and immunoinflammatory response.

Abstract
Excessive drinking of alcohol is becoming a worldwide problem, and people have recognized that there exists a close relationship between chronic kidney disease (CKD) and alcohol consumption. However, there are many inconsistencies between experimental and clinical studies on alcohol consumption and kidney damage. The possible reason for this contradictory conclusion is the complex drinking pattern of humans and some bioactivators in wine. In addition, the design itself of the clinical studies can also produce conflicting interpretations of the results. Considering the benefits of light-to-moderate alcohol consumption, we recommend that CKD patients continue light-to-moderate drinking, which is beneficial to them. Because alcohol consumption can lead to adverse events, we do not advise non-drinkers to start to drink. Although light-to-moderate alcohol consumption may not pose a risk to patients with CKD, the patients’ condition needs to be considered. Consumption of even small amounts of alcohol can be associated with increased death risk. Additional clinical and experimental studies are needed to clarify the effect of alcohol on the kidneys and alcohol consumption on CKD patients.

Associations between psychological distress and health-related behaviors among adults with chronic kidney disease. Prev Med 2019; 126:105749. Abstract
Chronic kidney disease (CKD) affects 15% of the US general population, and this rate is projected to increase. A healthy lifestyle is important for individuals with CKD to reduce risk for CKD progression and adverse heath events. Adults with CKD also have high rates of psychological distress, which may be associated with unhealthy behaviors. Using the 2013-2017 public use data files of the US National Health Interview Survey, we compared health behaviors (smoking, alcohol use, and physical activity [PA]) and psychological distress (assessed with the Kessler-6 scale) between adults with a CKD diagnosis in the preceding year and a matched sample of adults without a CKD diagnosis. We then examined the association between psychological distress and health behaviors among adults with CKD (n = 3923) using multinomial logistic regression models. Compared to those without CKD, those with CKD had lower rates of smoking, heavy alcohol use, and engagement in any type of PA 3+ times a week and higher rates of psychological distress. In addition to the health concerns posed by the high smoking rate (17%) and low physical activity rate (34%) among those with CKD, smoking and lack of PA were associated with greater risk of mild-moderate and/or serious psychological distress. Compared to no unhealthy behaviors, 2-3 unhealthy behaviors were associated with 4.72 (95% CI = 2.97-7.48) times greater risk of serious psychological distress. Adults with CKD and unhealthy behaviors need help with lifestyle modifications and assessment and treatment of psychological distress to reduce CKD progression and prevent other health complications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to determine the risk factors for early chronic kidney disease (CKD) (GFR 60-89 ml/min/1.73 m²; CKD stage 2) in asymptomatic Chinese individuals undergoing routine health examination. MATERIAL AND METHODS This cross-sectional study enrolled 9100 individuals who received voluntary medical examinations between 10/01/2011 and 09/30/2017. Demographic data, clinical history, clinical examination, medication, smoking, alcohol, blood biochemistry, urinalysis, and carotid ultrasound were extracted from the medical records. All laboratory analyses were performed routinely. Multivariable logistic regression for factors predicting CKD stage 2 was performed. RESULTS A total of 9100 individuals were enrolled (age of 18-65 and 65.4% male). CKD stage 2 was found in 1989/9100 individuals (21.9%). Male gender (OR=6.711, 95%CI: 5.376-8.403, P<0.001), older age (OR=1.077, 95%CI: 1.068-1.086, P<0.001), hemoglobin levels (OR=1.051, 95%CI: 1.046-1.057, P<0.001), triglycerides levels (OR=1.174, 95%CI: 1.067-1.292, P=0.001), HDL-C (OR=0.539, 95%CI: 0.380-0.763, P<0.001), Lp(a) levels (OR=1.000, 95%CI: 1.000-1.001, P=0.03), and carotid atherosclerosis (OR=1.248, 95%CI: 1.005-1.550, P=0.045) were associated with CKD stage 2 among all subjects. Serum triglycerides levels were associated with CKD stage 2 in the 18-45 and 45-65 years of age subgroups. CONCLUSIONS Factors that are routinely assessed during routine health examinations (male gender, age, hemoglobin levels, triglycerides levels, HDL-C, Lp(a) levels, and carotid atherosclerosis) can help identify individuals at higher risk of having CKD stage 2. The Chinese dyslipidemia is characterized by high triglycerides and low HDL-C and occurs in young and middle-aged individuals. Those factors could help identify individuals at higher risk for CKD stage 2 and who could benefit from preventive treatments.
