Abstract
PURPOSE This study aimed to determine the effect of video calling between preterm infants treated in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and their mothers on the physiological parameters of infants and mother-infant bonding. BACKGROUND Preterm infants need prolonged treatment in the NICU, and their families may have difficulty seeing their babies during this treatment process. METHODS This is a prospective, randomized-controlled, experimental study. The study sample consisted of 75 preterm infants and their mothers. The data were collected using a maternal introductory information form, a preterm infant introductory information form, a preterm infant physiological parameters follow-up form, and the Mother-Infant Bonding Scale (MIBS). The study included 3 study groups: the video call group, the video call with lullaby group, and the control group. Video calls between preterm infants and their mothers were made through Zoom for 5 to 10 minutes daily for 7 days. The mothers filled out the MIBS online before and on the 7th and 30th days of the study. RESULTS Preterm infants in the video call and the video call with lullaby groups had higher MIBS mean scores on the 7th and 30th days of the study than their pretest MIBS scores. Preterm infants in the video call and the video call with lullaby groups had statistically significantly higher MIBS mean scores on the seventh day of the study than those in the control group. At the end of the 7-day study period, there was an improvement in the physiological parameters of preterm infants in the video call group and the video call with lullaby group compared with those in the control group, and this relationship was statistically significant. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, the implementation of video calls between mothers and preterm infants in NICUs had a healing effect on the physiological parameters of preterm infants and increased mother-infant bonding.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Parents of preterm infants experience anxiety and stress in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Visitation restrictions due to COVID-19 have increased maternal pressure and limited bonding opportunities. Little research exists in Taiwan on using video conferencing as a solution. This study investigates depression and stress levels in mothers of preterm infants and evaluates the effectiveness of video visitation during NICU restrictions. METHODS This study adopts a cross-sectional design and a qualitative survey. Mothers of premature infants were recruited and they participated in the study. Interventions for video visits were scheduled on the third day of admission to the NICU (T1) and during the second week of the study (T2). After each video visit, participants completed an online survey. The study's online survey used structured questionnaires including demographics, the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) and the Parental Stress Scale (PSS): Infant Hospitalization (IH). RESULTS A total of 51 mothers of preterm infants participated in the study. During the T1 and T2 periods, single mothers with lower educational levels and those aged below 30 experienced depression and high levels of stress. Lower birth weight and gestational age were associated with maternal depression. Video visitation intervention led to a significant decrease in depression scores (EPDS, T1: 11.3 ± 5.5 vs. T2: 10.1 ± 5.2, p = 0.039). Positive correlations were observed between EPDS and PSS: IH scores (p < 0 .005). CONCLUSION Video visitation intervention can reduce maternal depression in mothers with preterm infants. Since it is practical, video visitation may be applied even after the pandemic.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To explore the relationship between symptoms of postpartum depression and the number of remote visitations among mothers of infants in the NICU. DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. SETTING NICU in a medical university in Iwate, Japan. PARTICIPANTS A total of 89 mothers of infants who spent more than 1 month in the NICU from June 2021 to December 2022. METHODS Participants completed the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS) at 4 days and 1 month after birth. We used a one-way analysis of variance with Tukey-Kramer or Games-Howell post hoc tests to examine differences in postpartum depression among three groups based on the frequency of remote visitation: frequent visitation, rare visitation, or no visitation. RESULTS Of the 89 mothers, 41 scored 9 points or higher on the EPDS conducted 4 days after birth; among them, 14 did not visit, 13 rarely visited, and 14 frequently visited the NICU remotely through a web camera. The rare visitation group had significantly higher EPDS scores 1 month after birth (M = 9.7, SD = 5.2) than the frequent (M = 5.3, SD = 3.7) and no visitation (M = 5.1, SD = 4.2) groups (p < .05). The rare visitation group demonstrated lower improvement on the EPDS than the frequent and no visitation groups (nonsignificant). CONCLUSION It is unclear whether remote visitation reduces symptoms of postpartum depression; however, the frequency of remote visitation could be assessed to identify at-risk mothers in need of social support.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to examine the relationship between virtual technology system utilization and insurance status or type of visitation restrictions in a single-center neonatal intensive care unit. STUDY DESIGN Prospective cohort study with separate analyses performed based on insurance status (public vs. nonpublic) and "in effect" unit visitation restrictions. The three study epochs based on patient visitation restrictions were Epoch 1 (July to October 2019) with standard visitation restrictions, Epoch 2 (November 2019 to February 2020) with respiratory syncytial virus/influenza visitation restrictions, and Epoch 3 (March to June 2020) with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) visitation restrictions, respectively. RESULTS Families of 357 infants used web-based cameras through most of the infant's hospitalization (median: 86.05%, Q3: 97.9%) with 165,795 total camera logins, indicating consistent utilization. There was a trend for fewer logins per infant and significantly longer time to consent (p = 0.03) in the Public Insurance group. Unit visitation restrictions impacted the time to consent, the shortest being in Epoch 3 during the COVID-19 pandemic (p = 0.03). CONCLUSION Virtual visitation technology is well embraced by neonatal instensive care unit families; however, gaps in access and use among subgroups signals a form of social inequality that needs to be explored further. Abstract
BACKGROUND In the COVID-19 pandemic, a visit restriction policy for patients has been implemented in medical institutions worldwide and visits are being made using alternative communication technologies. This shift has also required the use of platforms to prevent negative consequences of these restrictions. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this review was to comprehensively explore nonface-to-face visits as an alternative during infection prevention and to synthesize the scientific evidence of their benefits and disadvantages. METHODS A comprehensive search was conducted via the PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Web of Science electronic databases; unpublished trials in the clinical trials register ClinicalTrials.gov; and Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library up to September 10, 2021. The search query was developed according to the guidelines of the Peer Review of Electronic Search Strategies and included keywords on the topics of telemedicine and visitation restrictions. The inclusion criteria were a nonface-to-face modality using telemedicine with family in a hospital setting, experimental and observational studies, and articles written in English. The exclusion criteria were inaccessible in full text, not related to patient or family involvement, mainly focused on the study protocol, or only discussing the pros and cons of telemedicine. RESULTS Overall, patients' families experienced emotional distress due to restrictions on face-to-face visits. Nonface-to-face virtual visits compensating for these restrictions had a positive effect on reducing the risk of infection to the patient and the family. This further encouraged psychological and physical recovery and decreased psychological distress. However, nonface-to-face virtual technology could not replace the existence of actual families, and technical problems with networks and devices are reported as limitations. CONCLUSIONS Ensuring the availability of technology and educating on the same in alignment with the characteristics of patients and their families, nonface-to-face virtual visits need to show more potential as an effective patient-centered treatment strategy based on more research and advanced practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of bedside cameras in neonatal units facilitates livestreaming of infants to support parental and family bonding when they are unable to be physically present with their baby. This study aimed to explore the experiences of parents of infants previously admitted for neonatal care and who used live video streaming to view their baby in real-time. METHODS Qualitative semi-structured interviews were conducted after discharge with parents of infants admitted for neonatal care on a tertiary level neonatal unit in the UK in 2021. Interviews were conducted virtually, transcribed verbatim and uploaded into NVivo V12 to facilitate analysis. Thematic analysis by two independent researchers was undertaken to identify themes representing the data. RESULTS Seventeen participants took part in sixteen interviews. Thematic analysis identified 8 basic themes which were grouped into 3 organizational themes: (1) family integration of the baby including parent-infant, sibling-infant, and wider family-infant attachment facilitated through livestreaming, (2) implementation of the livestreaming service including communication, initial set up of the livestreaming service, and areas for improvement, and (3) parental control including emotional, and situational control. CONCLUSIONS The use of livestreaming technology can provide parents with opportunities to integrate their baby into their wider family and friendship community and gain a sense of control over their baby's admission for neonatal care. On-going parental education around how to use, and what to expect from, livestreaming technology is required to minimise any potential distress from viewing their baby online.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Communication with parents of sick premature and term infants in the NICU is complicated and challenging. Multiple efforts have been made to improve it, including the introduction of new electronic-based measures. AIM We aimed to study the influence of implementation of a new communication technology on parents' satisfaction with care in the NICU during the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS Infants were video-recorded in their incubators or cots without being disturbed. These short films, with voice updates on the infant's condition, were sent on a daily basis to their parents via a WhatsApp application. RESULTS Parents who chose to join the new communication project (study group) were older, and their infants were more premature. Parents were satisfied with this new communication modality. Satisfaction scores in both study and control groups were high, but not significantly different. CONCLUSIONS Although the implementation of the new communication project was successful, we could not demonstrate significant improvement in satisfaction scores that were high in study and control groups, reflecting baseline high satisfaction. Further studies are needed employing other assessment tools in order to evaluate other aspects of parents' satisfaction with new modalities of communication introduced to the NICU, and their effects on parents' bonding with their infants.

Abstract
Background: Breast milk feeding is an essential component of safe and effective care of the hospitalized premature infant. There are numerous barriers that impact breast milk expression during a preterm infant's hospitalization. We aimed to explore the experience of using videoconferencing with one's hospitalized premature infant while expressing breast milk. Materials and Methods: We conducted a qualitative study using purposive sampling to recruit lactating parents of premature (<34 weeks) hospitalized infants. We conducted semistructured interviews using an interview guide with 14 open-ended questions regarding the breast milk expression experience. Data collection and analysis were performed iteratively and were analyzed using inductive thematic analysis with a constant comparative approach. Data were organized into themes. Interview recruitment was discontinued when thematic saturation was reached. Results: Seventeen participants completed the interviews and four themes were identified: (1) videoconferencing promotes bonding and connection with the hospitalized infant, (2) videoconferencing provides motivation to pump, (3) videoconferencing reminds participants of the realities of separation from their infant, and (4) videoconferencing connects the whole family to the hospitalized infant. Conclusions: Users of videoconferencing with their hospitalized neonate reported an improved pumping experience while expressing milk for their premature infant. Videoconferencing is also a tool that can connect the whole family to the infant. This study was registered at clinicaltrials.gov (clinicaltrials.gov Identifier: NCT03957941) under the title "FamilyLink and Breastfeeding."

Abstract
Background Some neonatal intensive care units offer parents webcam systems for times when they cannot be in the ward. Leaving an infant in the ward can be challenging for parents, and trust in the neonatal healthcare professionals mitigates parents’ worries of not knowing how their infant is doing while they are away. If parents lack trust in the neonatal healthcare professionals, they may attempt to compensate by using webcams. In this work, we examine whether an association exists between the parental preference to use a webcam and low trust in physicians and nursing staff. Methods In a nationwide, retrospective cross-sectional study, parents of infants with a birth weight below 1500 g were surveyed six to 18 months after their infant’s birth. Parents who were not offered a webcam system in the ward were asked whether they would have opted for it. Trust was measured by the Trust in Physician and Trust in Nursing Staff scales. Results Of the parents who were not offered a webcam, 69% would have chosen to use a webcam if they had been granted the opportunity. The decision for or against a webcam was not significantly associated with either trust in physicians (OR = 0.654, 95% CI = 0.456, 0.937, p = .124) or trust in nursing staff (OR = 1.064, 95% CI = 0.783, 1.446, p = .932). Conclusions While the majority of parents surveyed would opt for webcam usage, this preference should not be interpreted as an indicator of lacking trust in neonatal healthcare professionals. Abstract
BACKGROUND To bridge the physical distance between parents and children during a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) stay, webcams are used in few German NICUs. They allow parents to view their infant even when they cannot be present on the ward. The aim of the study was to explore the factors for and against webcam use that parents with or without webcam use encountered. METHODS Guideline-based, semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted in the period from September 2019 to August 2020. Interview transcripts were analysed using a category-based content analysis. The categories were generated in a combined deductive-inductive procedure. RESULTS We interviewed 33 mothers and seven fathers. Parents with webcam experience emphasised positive aspects concerning their webcam use. Factors that increased webcam acceptance included feeling certain about the child's well-being and an increased sense of proximity. Only a few critical voices emerged from parents who had webcam experience, e.g. regarding privacy concerns. Parents who had no experience with webcam use showed ambivalence. On the one hand, they expressed a positive attitude towards the webcam system and acknowledged that webcam use could result in feelings of control. On the other hand, reservations emerged concerning an increase of mental stress or a negative influence on parental visitation behaviour. CONCLUSION In addition to the parents' positive experiences with webcam use, results show a need within parents who lacked webcam experience. Despite some criticism, it was evident that webcam use was primarily seen as an opportunity to counteract the negative consequences of separation in the postnatal phase. Abstract
The utilization of telehealth in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) has the potential to better support families during their infant's time in the hospital. Due to the stressful nature of a NICU admission, parents are at increased risk for anxiety. The expanding use of web camera and videoconferencing technologies will allow families to bond and connect with their infant through remote baby viewing. These technologies are also in place during their hospitalization and allow families the opportunity to connect directly with their care team to build trusting relationships and work on a mutual care plan. Telehealth platforms can continue to aid families post discharge to ensure that transition of care to their child's primary care provider is seamless. With telehealth programs taking root in multiple, longitudinal aspects of NICU care, the hope is to promote the foundations of patient and family-centered care and provide our families with the support they deserve.

Abstract
The ongoing Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic is disrupting most specialized healthcare services worldwide, including those for high-risk newborns and their families. Due to the risk of contagion, critically ill infants, relatives and professionals attending neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) are undergoing a profound remodeling of the organization and quality of care. In particular, mitigation strategies adopted to combat the COVID-19 pandemic may hinder the implementation of family-centered care within the NICU. This may put newborns at risk for several adverse effects, e.g., less weight gain, more nosocomial infections, increased length of NICU stay as well as long-term worse cognitive, emotional, and social development. This article aims to contribute to deepening the knowledge on the psychological impact of COVID-19 on parents and NICU staff members based on empirical data from the literature. We also provided evidence-based indications on how to safely empower families and support NICU staff facing such a threatening emergency, while preserving the crucial role of family-centered developmental care practices.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this study is to evaluate associations between webcam use in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) with parental stress and nursing work-related stress and burnout. DESIGN Prospective validated and de novo questionnaires administered to NICU parents and nurses during two observation periods: (1) no webcam access (off webcam) and (2) webcam access (on webcam). RESULTS Seventy-nine "off webcam" parents, 80 "on webcam" parents, and 35 nurses were included. Parental stress levels were significantly lower "on webcam" and perceptions of the technology were overwhelmingly positive. There were no significant differences in nursing stress levels and burnout between periods. Only 14% of nurses believed that webcam use improves infant's quality of care. Majority nurses felt that webcams increase parental and nursing stress. CONCLUSIONS Webcam use in the NICU is associated with lower parental stress levels and has no effect on nursing stress levels or work-related burnout. These findings contradict nurses' beliefs that webcams increase parent and nurse stress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The Parental Stressor Scale: Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (PSS:NICU) is a well-validated tool to assess different sources of stress in parents during the NICU hospitalization of their infant. The present meta-analytic study assessed the relative impact of different NICU-related sources of parental stress in a pool of studies conducted in a wide set of different countries. Also, differences in stress levels by parent gender and country, as well as the impact of infants' neonatal characteristics and clinical conditions were explored. METHODS Records were searched on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science (January 1993-December 2019). A purposive open search string was adopted: ["PSS:NICU"] OR ["PSS-NICU"] OR ["Parental Stressor Scale"]. A multiple random-effect meta-analysis was conducted on data from 53 studies extracted by independent coders. RESULTS Parental role alteration emerged as the greatest source of stress for both mothers and fathers. Mothers reported higher stress levels compared to fathers. A significant difference emerged only for the subscale related to sights and sounds physical stimuli. No significant effects of infants' neonatal characteristics (gestational age, birth weight) and clinical conditions (comorbidities) emerged. A marginal positive effect of NICU length of stay emerged on the global level of parents' stress. CONCLUSIONS The current meta-analysis underlines that parental stress related to NICU admission is a worldwide healthcare issue. Immediate and tailored support to parents after the birth of their at-risk infant should be prioritized to reduce parental stress and to promote mothers and fathers' emotional well-being and new-born neurodevelopmental outcomes.

Abstract
PROBLEM The introduction of web-cameras in neonatal intensive care units (NICUs) has made it possible for parents to see their sick or premature infant when they cannot be close to them due to prolonged hospital admissions. However, there is a paucity of research into the impact of this technology on the wellbeing of families. A systematic review was conducted to identify previous research and suggest avenues for future inquiry. ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA Research studies written in English that investigated the impact of web-cameras on parent-infant attachment in the NICU were sought for inclusion. However, due to the dearth of studies focused on this question, the eligibility criteria were extended to include any study that assessed the impact of web-camera use on mechanisms that impact attachment quality, such as bonding, anxiety, stress, and depression. RESULTS A total of 152 articles were identified. After duplicates and other non-suitable articles were removed, three studies met eligibility criteria for review. CONCLUSION There are promising indications that the use of web-cameras in the NICU enhances parent-infant attachment by strengthening parents' feelings of closeness to their infants, increasing parental responsiveness and reducing parental stress and anxiety. However, while the overall effects appear to be positive, negative impacts affecting a small proportion of parents were identified. This highlights the need to identify who is most likely to benefit from web-camera technology and who requires alternative supports. IMPLICATIONS Web-cameras are a useful adjunct to methods of family-centred care, however, more research is needed to optimise their use and minimise potential harm.

Abstract
The admission of an infant to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) presents specialized barriers to the maternal-infant bonding (MIB) process. Virtual visitation (VV) provides a mother with the opportunity to have continual access to her hospitalized infant via a one-way live Web camera. While increasingly used in the NICU, VV remains a novel concept. The objective of this study was to introduce a conceptual model that incorporates the use of VV into the NICU MIB process. Adapted from the Model of Mother-Infant Bonding After Antenatal HIV Diagnosis, a newly developed model of MIB using VV as a bonding enhancement tool is offered. A Model of NICU Maternal-Infant Bonding Incorporating Virtual Visitation presents the NICU bonding process in a chronological manner, with 5 primary propositions and an explanation of their related themes. Virtual visitation is introduced into the bonding process and is shown to act as a moderated variable. A Model of NICU Maternal-Infant Bonding Incorporating Virtual Visitation introduces VV as a tool to enhance the MIB process that occurs in the NICU. The model provides the basis for the development of a research program to examine the multiple potential effects of VV in the NICU.

Abstract
Although the COVID-19 pandemic has largely not clinically affected infants in neonatal intensive care units around the globe, it has affected how care is provided. Most hospitals, including their NICUs, have significantly reduced parental and family visitation privileges. From an ethical perspective, this restriction of parental visitation in settings where infectious risk is difficult to understand. No matter what the right thing to do is, NICUs are currently having to support families of their patients via different mechanisms. In this perspective, we discuss ways NICUs can support parents and families when they are home and when they are in the NICU as well as provide infants the support needed when family members are not able to visit.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To synthesize findings from the published literature on the use of technology in the NICU to improve communications and interactions among health care providers, parents, and infants. DATA SOURCES Electronic databases including Ovid MEDLINE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and Google Scholar were searched for related research published through May 2016. The reference lists of all studies were reviewed, and a hand search of key journals was also conducted to locate eligible studies. STUDY SELECTION Eleven studies (five quantitative, two qualitative, and four mixed methods) were identified that met the inclusion criteria. Only studies published in English were included. DATA EXTRACTION Whittemore and Knafl's methodology for conducting integrative reviews was used to guide data extraction, analysis, and synthesis. Data were extracted and organized according to the following headings: author, year, and location; study purpose and design; sample size and demographics; technology used; study findings; and limitations. DATA SYNTHESIS Various technologies were used, including videoconferencing, videophone, and commercially available modalities such as Skype, FaceTime, AngelEye, and NICView Webcams. In the 11 studies, three main outcomes were evaluated: parents' perception of technology use, health care providers' perceptions of technology use, and objective outcomes, such as parental anxiety or stress or infant length of stay. Overall, parents and health care providers perceived the varied interventions quite favorably, although a few significant differences were found for the objective measures. CONCLUSION Several interventions have been tested to improve communications and promote interactions among NICU health care team members, parents, and infants. Although initial findings are positive, research in this area is quite limited, and the reviewed studies had several limitations. There is a significant need for further rigorous research to be conducted with diverse samples.

Abstract
BACKGROUND When a newborn requires neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) hospitalization, parent and infant experience an unusual often prolonged separation. This critical care environment poses challenges to parent-infant closeness. Parents desire physical contact and holding and touching are particularly important. Evidence shows that visitation, holding, talking, and skin to skin contact are associated with better outcomes for infants and parents during hospitalization and beyond. Thus, it would be important to understand closeness in this context. The purpose of this study was to explore from nurses' perspective, what do parents and nurses do to promote parent-infant closeness or provoke separation. METHODS Qualitative methods were utilized to attain an understanding of closeness and separation. Following ethics approval, purposive sampling was used to recruit nurses with varying experience working different shifts in NICUs in two countries. Nurses were loaned a smartphone over one work shift to record their thoughts and perceptions of events that occurred or experiences they had that they considered to be closeness or separation between parents and their hospitalized infant. Sample size was determined by saturation (18 Canada, 19 Finland). Audio recordings were subjected to inductive thematic analysis. Team meetings were held to discuss emerging codes, refine categories, and confirm these reflected data from both sites. One overarching theme was elaborated. RESULTS Balancing closeness and separation was the major theme. Both parents and nurses engaged in actions to optimize closeness. They sought closeness by acting autonomously in infant caregiving, assuming decision-making for their infant, seeking information or skills, and establishing a connection in the face of separation. Parents balanced their desire for closeness with other competing demands, such as their own needs. Nurses balanced infant care needs and ability to handle stimulation with the need for closeness with parents. Nurses undertook varied actions to facilitate closeness. Parent, infant and NICU-related factors influenced closeness. Consequences, both positive and negative, arose for parents, infants, and nurses. CONCLUSION Findings point to actions that nurses undertake to promote closeness and help parents cope with separation including: promoting parent decision-making, organizing care to facilitate closeness, and supporting parent caregiving.
