Abstract
AIMS Most breeds of goat are more susceptible to nematode infection than sheep, and this appears to be a consequence of less effective immune responses. Several papers have considered the effectiveness of eosinophils and immunoglobulin A (IgA) in goats but differences in the induction of responses have not been studied in the same detail. The aim of this study was to look at the induction of eosinophil and IgA responses in Boer goats reared indoors under intensive conditions. METHODS AND RESULTS The goats were experimentally infected with a low dose of 2400 Haemonchus contortus, Trichostrongylus spp. and Oesophagostomum spp. at a 6:1:1 ratio. Faecal egg counts (FEC), packed cell volume (PCV), IgA activity against third-stage larvae and peripheral eosinophilia were measured twice a week for eight weeks. The infection generated an IgA response but did not significantly increase peripheral eosinophilia in the 25 infected kids compared with the 4 control animals. FEC was not associated with IgA activity or eosinophilia. CONCLUSION A detailed analysis of IgA and eosinophil responses to deliberate nematode infection in Boer goats showed that there was an increase in nematode-specific IgA activity but no detectable eosinophil response. In addition, there was no association between increased IgA activity or eosinophilia with egg counts and worm burdens. These suggest that IgA and eosinophils do not act to control nematode infection in goats.

Abstract
Goat farming plays an important role in the Sri Lankan rural economy. Sri Lankan indigenous (SLI) goats and their crossbreds are reared mainly under extensive management and indiscriminately exposed to pathogens and parasites. This study was designed to evaluate resistance to haemonchosis in SLI goats and their Jamnapari crossbreds (JCB) in the dry zone of Sri Lanka. Twenty SLI and 20 JCB 4-month-old male goats were artificially challenged with 5000 H. contortus L3 larvae. Faecal egg counts (FEC), body weights, FAffa MAlan CHArt (FAMACHA®) scores, packed cell volumes (PCV), red blood cell counts, total and differential white blood cell counts, blood haemoglobin contents, serum total protein and albumin contents, and serum pepsinogen and antibody levels were determined at 0, 21, 28, 35 and 42days after challenge. Effects of measurement time were significant for all variables (P<0.05). Breed effects approached significance (P=0.06) and measurement time×breed interaction was significant (P<0.05) for FEC. Peak FEC occurred at day 35 in both goat types, and JCB goats had higher FEC than SLI goats at days 28 (P<0.001), 35 (P<0.10), and 42 (P<0.10). Means for FEC at day 35 were 1783±446 eggs per gram of feces (epg) for SLI kids and 3329±850 epg for JCB kids. Haematological parameters, serum chemistry, and FAMACHA scores suggested that SLI goats were recovering from parasitic infection by day 42, whereas JCB goats had increasing severity of anaemia. Means for PCV in SLI goats decreased from 26.8±0.7% at day 0 to 19.7±0.9% at day 35 and thereafter increased to 20.2±0.9% at day 42. Means for PCV in JCB goats declined from 25.9±0.6% at day 0 to 17.2±0.9% at day 42. Eosinophilia was observed in both genotypes. The JCB goats were heavier than SLI goats and had higher antibody titres, reflecting higher levels of parasitism. Both goat types significantly increased in body weight during the experiment and therefore tolerated parasite infection without severe production losses. We concluded that SLI goats were more resistant to haemonchosis than JCB goats, but that JCB goats were somewhat resilient to parasitic infection. Substantial variability in measurements associated with parasite infection in both breeds indicated potential to improve parasite resistance. Phenotypic information should be coupled with genomic information to identify appropriate breeding goals for future selection programs.

Abstract
Ivermectin is a frequently used anthelmintic in pig production in Nigeria, because it is very effective against a broad range of endo- and ecto-parasites. However, gastrointestinal (GI) nematode infection still remains a major threat in pig production in Enugu state, Nigeria. Hence, the efficacy of ivermectin against GI nematode parasites of pig was evaluated in pig farms located in Nsukka area of Enugu State, using the Faecal egg count reduction test (FECRT). From each of 11 pig farms, 10 randomly selected female pigs were used for the study. Faecal samples were collected per rectum from each of the pigs for analysis, and their individual faecal egg count (FEC) per gram of faeces determined prior to treatment with ivermectine® (1% Ivemectin). A repeat sampling was carried out on the same pigs 12days post treatment (PT) to determine PT FEC. The efficacy of the anthelmintic, was calculated using the formular, FECR (%)=100 X (1-[T2/T1]). The ivermectin produced mean FECR% of 98.36%±0.43% against strongyle eggs and 100% against ascarid and trichurid in the farms. Consequently, at the level of the FECRT, the ivermectin used in this study was effective against GI nematode parasites of pigs in the study area, and no resistance was observed.

Abstract
Gastrointestinal nematodes (GINs), Haemonchus contortus, are a major health problem in goat production. Resistance to H. contortus, the most prevalent GIN in Uganda, was studied among three indigenous goat breeds to assess their differences. Twelve male goats of each breed approximately 7 months old of small East African (SEA), Mubende, and Kigezi goats from smallholder farmers in Arua, Mubende, and Kabale were assembled for the study. At the station, they were dewormed with a combination therapy of the broad-spectrum dewormers closantel and albendazole to free the goats of gastrointestinal parasites. During experimentation, the goats were kept indoors and ad libitum fed on clean banana peels and napier grass. On attainment of zero-worm-egg status, the goats were artificially infected with 18,000 third-stage (L3) larvae of H. contortus prepared according to Baermann’s procedure. Data were collected on fecal egg count (FEC), packed cell volume (PCV), and body weight (BW) on a 2-week basis until 12 weeks post infection and carcass weight and total worm count (WC) in the abomasum at termination of the experiment. The data on FEC, PCV, and BW were subjected to repeated-measure analysis of variance and the others by one-way analysis of variance. FEC between breeds was only significantly different at 12 weeks post infection (p = 0.04). Generally, higher FEC was recorded in Kigezi compared to SEA and Mubende goats. Carcass weight was significantly different among breeds (p < 0.05), with Mubende having the highest carcass weight, followed by Kigezi and SEA. PCV and daily weight gains were significantly different between breeds (p < 0.05). WC was not significantly different between the breeds. FEC and PCV were weakly significant at later stages of the experiment with higher parasite burden suggesting potential variation in resistance to H. contortus. These differences could be exploited in designing breeding programs with disease resistance in indigenous goat breeds.

Abstract
Faecal worm egg counts (FEC) are very important indicators in assessing the intensity of helminth infections in animal hosts and inform decisions taken in parasite control programmes. FEC are however affected by many factors which include the dose level of larval challenge, species composition of the worms, worm burden, female worm fecundity and concurrent infections to name but these few. The relevance of time of collection of faecal sample for FEC is not fully known and in most cases faeces for analysis is collected whenever feasible for the researcher on sample collection days. The significance of the time of collection of faeces on FEC was therefore investigated at two different periods of the day, morning and afternoon. Faecal samples were collected at 7-8 a.m. (morning) and at 2-3 p.m. (afternoon) on same sampling days from 6 mice and 10 West African Dwarf goat kids experimentally infected with Heligmosomoides bakeri and Haemonchus contortus respectively. FEC were conducted using the flotation and modified McMaster techniques. Overall, the 2-3 p.m. FEC tended to be higher than the 7-8 a.m. FEC in both animal species but the difference was not significant (P > 0.05). The time of collection of faecal samples for faecal worm egg counts is therefore not a crucial factor that may significantly affect FEC in H. bakeri and H. contortus infected mice and goats respectively although it would be advisable to maintain particular periods for collection of faeces in particular experiments for best results of FEC to be obtained.

Abstract
Response of the West African Dwarf (WAD) goats to two different isolates of Haemonchus contortus, the Red Sokoto (RS) goat isolate (RSHc) and the WAD goat isolate (WADHc) (isolated from WAD goats), was studied by experimental infections of 4–6-month-old male WAD goat kids. Group 1 and Group 2 goats were each infected with 4500 infective larvae (L3) of RSHc and WADHc, respectively. Group 3 animals served as uninfected control. Prepatent period (PPP), faecal egg counts (FEC), worm burden (WB), body weight (BW), packed cell volume (PCV), and body condition score (BCS) were determined. WAD goats infected with RSHc isolate and the ones infected with WADHc isolate had mean PPP of 19.63 ± 0.26 and 19.50 ± 0.19, respectively. Goats infected with WADHc isolate had significantly higher FEC (P = 0.004) and WB (P = 0.001). BW were significantly higher (P = 0.004) both in the controls and in Group 2 goats infected with WADHc isolate than in Group 1 goats infected with the RSHc isolate. BCS of animals in both infected groups dropped significantly (P = 0.001). There was a significant drop in PCV (P = 0.004) of both infected groups in comparison. Both isolates of H. contortus were pathogenic to the host.

Abstract
This study was carried out to evaluate the relationships of cellular changes in the abomasal mucosa and parasitological parameters, by comparing resistant and susceptible young Creole goats (kids) after experimental infection with Haemonchus contortus. The kids were infected over 2 periods (challenges 1 and 2) of 7 and 6 weeks, respectively. Fecal egg count (FEC), blood eosinophilia, packed cell volume (PCV), and body weight were weekly monitored. At the end of both challenges a subgroup of kids was slaughtered for nematode burden measurements and analysis of inflammatory cell infiltration in the abomasal mucosa. The average daily gain was higher in resistant kids after both challenges. Blood eosinophilia and FEC were higher in susceptible kids after both challenges. The number of immature worms and the means of female length were lower after challenge 2 whatever the genetic status. No differences were observed in the eosinophil and mononuclear cell infiltration between challenges 1 and 2 and resistant and susceptible kids. Globule leukocyte infiltration was found higher after the challenge 1 in resistant kids. This effect of the genetic status on globule leukocytes counts but not on the other inflammatory cell highlights the need for further study on the functional activity of these cell populations.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to compare the effects of the type of Haemonchus contortus experimental infection (trickle infection, TI versus single infection, SI) on feed intake, nutrients digestibility, parasitological and haematological measures, and plasma leptin in Creole kids. The animals were infected over 2 periods (challenge 1 and challenge 2) of 6 weeks each, corresponding respectively to the primary and the secondary infection. Periods prior infection (1 week each) were considered as controls. The primary infection was realized with 35 Creole kids (18.40±3.76 kg BW) housed in individual boxes and fed a hay-based diet. The secondary infection continued with 29 kids (21.90±3.40 kg BW) from the initial 35. A total of 6 kids and 8 kids were slaughtered for measuring nematode burden at the end of the primary and the secondary infection, respectively. Measurements of nutrients digestibility were made at 0, 3 and 5 weeks post-infection for both challenges. Faecal egg count (FEC), blood eosinophilia and packed cell volume (PCV) were monitored weekly. Feed intake (dry matter intake, DMI) and nutrients digestibility were negatively affected by H. contortus infection only during the primary infection. Plasma leptin changed significantly over time (P=0.0002) but was not affected by the infection type. Effect of infection type was observed only on crude protein digestibility during the primary infection, which was lower in the TI group (P<0.01). The overall level of blood eosinophilia was significantly higher in the TI group (P<0.0001) during both challenges. The overall FEC mean was significantly higher in the SI compared with the TI groups, during both challenges (P<0.02). These results were related to the mean female length significantly higher in the SI group compared with the TI group during challenge 1 (P=0.004), and the number of adult nematode significantly lower in the TI group compared with the SI group during the challenge 2 (P=0.05). The results showed that the response of Creole kids to H. contortus experimental infection was in part dependent on the type of experimental infection. Our data suggest that plasma leptin would not be involved in the response of Creole kids against H. contortus infection, as no relationship between its plasma level and the transient reduction in voluntary feed intake observed in both groups during the primary infection was observed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate correlates of resistance to GI nematode infection in Nigerian West African dwarf (WAD) sheep. METHODS Thirty three sheep were randomly assigned to two groups, A (n=27) which were used for experimental infections, and B (n=6) which served as uninfected control. Each infected animal received weekly escalating infections with infective larvae (60%Haemonchus contortus (H. contortus) and 40%Trichostrongylus colubriformis (T. colubriformis) for 4 weeks. The responses of all the infected and control sheep were assessed by faecal egg count (FEC), worm burden (Wb), packed cell volume (PCV), body weight (Bwt), and body condition score (BCS). On the basis of their individual faecal egg output, Lambs in group A with epg ≤1,000 on any sampling day were classified as low faecal egg count (LFEC) phenotype (n=16), those with epg between 1,000 and 10,000 as intermediate (n=5) and lambs with epg > 10,000 as high feacal egg count (HFEC) phenotype (n=6). RESULTS The difference between the FEC classes was highly significant (P=0.001). The BCS and weight gained at the end of the experiment by the control and LFEC sheep was significantly higher (P≤0.05) than those of the intermediate and HFEC phenotypes. There was a significant and negative correlation between the parasitological measures and the trio of BCS, PCV and Bwt of sheep. CONCLUSION The result of the study indicated that the FEC, weight gain, PCV, and BCS are correlates and potential selection criteria of GI nematode resistant WAD sheep.

Abstract
Weekly changes in body condition scores and body weights were determined in West African Dwarf sheep following trickle exposure to weekly escalating mixed infections with Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis starting with single doses of 500 infective larvae (L(3)) at wk1, 1000 L(3) at wk2, 2000 L(3) at wk3 and 4000 L(3) at wk4. Thirty-three animals were randomly assigned to two groups namely, Group 1 (n=27) and Group 2 (n=6). Group 1 animals were used for experimental infections and Group 2 animals served as uninfected controls. Body condition scores (BCS), body weights (BW), faecal egg counts (FEC) per gram of faeces and worm burden (Wb) were determined using standard procedures. Lambs in group 1 with epg ≤ 1000 were classified as strong responders (n=16), those with epg between 1000 and 10,000 as intermediate (n=5) and lambs with epg>10,000 on any sampling day were classified as weak responders (n=6). Based on this classification, the mean epg of lambs classified as strong responders was significantly lower (P<0.001) than the epg of lambs classified as weak responders. The body condition scores and body weights of the strong responder lambs were comparable with those of the uninfected control and they were significantly higher than those of the weak and intermediate responders from wk5 till the end of the experiment. There was an inverse and significant relationship between the average BCS of days 56 and 59 and the average FEC of days 56 and 59 (r(s)=-572; P=0.017; n=27) as well as with Wb (r(s)=-531; P=0.028; n=27). We concluded that changes in the body scores are good indicators of the intensity of gastrointestinal nematode infection in the Nigerian WAD sheep.

Abstract
The responses of the Nigerian West African Dwarf sheep to experimental infections with two of its most important gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes, namely, Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus colubriformis were studied by means of two measures of parasitological response, namely, faecal egg count (FEC) and worm burden (Wb), and three measures of host pathology, namely, packed cell volume (PCV), body weight (Bwt) and body condition score (BCS). Following exposure to weekly escalating infections (60% H. contortus and 40% T. colubriformis) starting with single doses of 500 infective larvae (L(3)) at week 1, 1,000 L(3) at week 2, 2,000 L(3) at week 3 and 4,000 L(3) at week 4, two distinctive worm burden response phenotypes were readily recognisable, namely, low Wb (LWb) and high Wb (HWb) phenotypes. The percentage of inoculums (adults and immature stages) recovered at necropsy were 3.75% and 33.08% respectively for H. contortus and T. colubriformis. The results showed that the FECs of the lambs belonging to the LWb phenotype were significantly lower than the FECs of their HWb counterpart. Among the measures of host pathology tested, the LWb phenotype sheep had similar Bwt, PCV and BCS to the uninfected control sheep, whereas the HWb phenotype sheep had significantly lower values than their LWb counterparts and the control sheep towards the end of the experiment. There was a highly significant positive correlation between worm burden transformed as log(10) (Wb + 10) and the average of D56 and D59 FECs. A highly significant negative correlation also was obtained between log(10) (Wb + 10) and the PCV, Bwt and BCS. The low percentage of H. contortus inoculums recovered at necropsy suggested that the sheep may be resistant to their most important GI nematode, H. contortus but less so to T. colubriformis.

Abstract
Background West African Dwarf (WAD) goats serve an important role in the rural village economy of West Africa, especially among small-holder livestock owners. They have been shown to be trypanotolerant and to resist infections with Haemonchus contortus more effectively than any other known breed of goat. Methods In this paper we review what is known about the origins of this goat breed, explain its economic importance in rural West Africa and review the current status of our knowledge about its ability to resist parasitic infections. Conclusions We suggest that its unique capacity to show both trypanotolerance and resistance to gastrointestinal (GI) nematode infections is immunologically based and genetically endowed, and that knowledge of the underlying genes could be exploited to improve the capacity of more productive wool and milk producing, but GI nematode susceptible, breeds of goats to resist infection, without recourse to anthelmintics. Either conventional breeding allowing introgression of resistance alleles into susceptible breeds, or transgenesis could be exploited for this purpose. Appropriate legal protection of the resistance alleles of WAD goats might provide a much needed source of revenue for the countries in West Africa where the WAD goats exist and where currently living standards among rural populations are among the lowest in the world.

Abstract
AbstractA survey was conducted of gastrointestinal nematode infections and trypanosomosis in Nigerian West African Dwarf (WAD) goats from the savanna region of the country. Animals were screened at two markets, Gboko and Akpagher, from the beginning of April until the end of September, coinciding with the end of the dry season and the first 5 months of the wet season. Of 1054 goats that were examined, 80.5% carried gastrointestinal (GI) nematodes belonging to the genera Haemonchus (61.0%), Oesophagostomum (21.0%) and Trichostrongylus (17.9%). Faecal egg counts (FEC) increased very slowly but significantly from April to maximum levels in September, and varied marginally between the two market sources. The majority of goats (68.8 and 70.1% at the two markets) had low FEC not exceeding 50 eggs/g (epg). FEC did not differ significantly between the sexes or between age classes. Packed cell volume (PCV) also declined significantly with month of the study, but was affected by host sex (a significant month × sex interaction) being generally higher in male animals throughout the period. There was a highly significant negative correlation between log10(FEC+1) and PCV, when all other factors had been taken into account. Body condition scores (BCS) also declined with month of the study, but there was a marked difference between the two sexes, with male animals generally showing a greater stability of BCS across the months compared with females. Trypanosome infections were found in only 4% of the goats and only during the rainy season. Most infections (92.86%) were caused by Trypanosoma brucei alone although T. vivax and T. congolense were occasionally detected. Overall, the majority of goats sampled each month maintained generally good body condition (BCS 3.0–5.0), normal or slightly reduced PCV, even when concurrently infected with trypanosomes and GI nematodes. However, four concurrently infected goats showed signs of overt anaemia during periods of peak infection, during the late rainy season, with marked reductions in PCV ( < 15%). Two of the infected goats were also in poor body condition with BCS of < 2.0. There was no evidence of additive or synergistic pathogenic effects of the two parasites. These results are discussed in the context of the unexpectedly strong resistance and resilience of the savanna WAD ecotype to its native strains of GI nematode and trypanosome parasites.

Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the relationship of parasite-specific serum antibodies with the resistance status of Creole kids. The average breeding values on egg output predicted in a context of natural infection at 11 months of age were distant of 1.07 genetic standard deviation between resistant and susceptible animals. After drenching the animals were maintained worm-free during 1 month until experimental infection with 10,000 Haemonchus contortus infective larvae (L3). Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was carried out in serum samples to determine the level of IgG, IgA and IgE anti-H. contortus L3 crude extracts and adult excretion/secretion products (ESP). Parasitological and blood immunological parameters were measured on the 2 extreme groups. Despite the absence of any typical signs of haemonchosis, susceptible kids had more than 11 times higher faecal egg counts (FEC) at 35 days post-infection (d.p.i.) than resistant kids had. Levels of immunoglobulin against H. contortus L3 and ESP increased significantly after infection in both groups. However, no difference in the host immune response mediated by immunoglobulin against H. contortus was evidenced between groups. This finding suggests that, in goats previously infected by H. contortus, a degree of protection occurred and the phenotypic and genetic segregation in resistant and susceptible animals were not related to the humoral immune response. The correlation coefficients between FEC and IgE anti-ESP (r=0.593; P<0.05 was significant in both resistant and susceptible animals. Such correlation suggesting a hypersensitivity reaction dependent on worm prolificacy has never been described. This result needs further studies to understand the mechanisms underlying this observation.

Abstract
The effect of dietary protein on the pathophysiology of Haemonchus contortus infection in reproducing first pregnancy West African Dwarf (WAD) goats was studied. Eighteen 10-12-month-old pubertal female WAD goats divided into two equal groups were used and confined separately. One group was maintained on high-protein diet (HPD) while the other was maintained on low-protein diet (LPD) from day 1 of pregnancy up to week 6 post-partum. Each animal was infected with 600 infective larvae of H. contortus weekly for 4 weeks and blood collected by jugular venipuncture for the determination of packed cell volume and serum proteins. The results of the study showed that improved protein nutrition significantly enhanced the level of serum albumin (p<0.05). It also significantly lowered the level of serum globulin (p<0.05) that otherwise would be high in haemonchosis. However, improvement in the dietary protein level appeared not to have any effect on the packed cell volume and total serum protein level.

Abstract
AbstractClinical, parasitological and pathological responses of a tropical out-bred domestic rabbit to experimental Trichostrongylus colubriformis infection were used to evaluate its suitability as a laboratory host and model for studying the host–parasite relationships of T. colubriformis. In the first experiment, three groups each of 16, predominantly juvenile male, 8- to 10-week-old rabbits were given a single pulse infection with 500, 5000 or 25000 infective larvae (L3) of T. colubriformis, to represent low, medium and high levels of infection, respectively. A fourth group of 16 rabbits of similar age formed the uninfected controls. In the second experiment, two groups of 10 juvenile (8- to 10-week-old) and 10 adult (8- to 10-month-old) rabbits were similarly infected with 20000 L3, with appropriate naïve controls. Prepatency was 14 and 16 days and peak faecal egg counts occurred on days 24 and 20 after infection in young and adult rabbits respectively. Peak worm counts occurred on day 14 in both age groups and at all levels of infection. Subsequently, parasite burdens declined in a highly significantly dose- and age-dependent manner. At low and moderate levels of infection, approximately 83–98% of worms were recovered from the first 60 cm of the small intestine. Worm fecundity was also significantly influenced by host age and larval dose. Host age also had a significant effect on worm length. Infections with T. colubriformis were associated with a highly significant loss of body weight, accompanied by anorexia, diarrhoea and 25% mortality at high dose levels during the patent period of infection. There were no significant changes in packed cell volume and eosinophil counts at all ages and levels of infection but significant lymphocytosis occurred at the high dose level between days 7 and 21. Parasite-specific serum IgG responses were not related to worm burden. Overall, data showed that this miniature, docile and relatively inexpensive breed of rabbit is a potentially valuable laboratory host for studying T. colubriformis infections. The larval dose, duration of infection and host age were major determinants of host responsiveness to primary infections in this rabbit genotype.

AbstractThe effect of dose and duration of immunizing infections of Heligmosomoides polygyrus on protection against homologous challenge was studied in female TO mice. Primary infections were terminated at various levels with pyrantel embonate (adult infections) or ivermectin (larval infections) and mice were then challenged with 500 infective larvae (L3). The level of protection to secondary challenge positively correlated with the intensity of the primary immunizing infection but truncation of larval infection produced significantly better protection than termination of the adult nematode infection. The duration of the primary larval infection (1–6 days) positively correlated with the level of protection to secondary challenge, antibody responses and the proportion of circulating eosinophils. Histological changes in the gastrointestinal tract, peripheral leucocytic changes and antibody responses of the mice to H. polygyrus adult somatic antigens indicate both a cellular and humoral basis of host immunity to secondary challenge. Although the TO mice are slow responders in that they harbour chronic infections, immunization by intramucosal killing of the larval stage produced strong protection against secondary challenge infection. The presence of dead immunogenic larval stages within the intestinal wall may well be an important factor, since it exposes the host to stage specific antigens at an appropriate location. The implications of the findings for the control of gastrointestinal nematode infections are also discussed.

Abstract
West African Dwarf (WAD) goats of the Nigerian subhumid zone generally show strong resistance and resilience to Haemonchus contortus in laboratory experiments, although a relatively small proportion are susceptible to infection. Little is known about these extremes of response phenotype in nature. Therefore, a survey was carried out of gastrointestinal nematode infections in WAD goats, with emphasis on abomasal worms, at three goat markets in Southern Nigeria during the rainy season. Faecal samples (n=1070) were collected weekly from goats between April and September, and 352 abomasa and small intestines from local abattoirs were examined. Total strongyle (prevalence=65.0%) and H. contortus (prevalence=64.3%) faecal egg counts (FEC) varied between the three markets, being highest throughout at Opi. FEC increased from April to peak in August. Based on raw FEC, 76.1% of goats had FEC of <100, and 4.7%>500. Adjustment of these figures for monthly and between-market differences, gave figures of 78.8 and 3.4%, respectively. H. contortus worm burdens (WB) showed a similar pattern with 67.9% of goats harbouring <200 worms and 8.2% >1000, and after adjustment 69.6 and 6.0%, respectively. Fecundity, based on eggs in the uterus, did not vary between markets or monthly, but fell with increasing WB. Trichostrongylus colubriformis was less frequent (prevalence=42.4%) but goats from Opi also carried higher WB, and worms were similarly highly aggregated in hosts. When the between-market and monthly differences for both species were controlled, a highly significant positive correlation between the species emerged. Therefore, although a small subset of goats, highly susceptible to H. contortus, exists in this breed, the majority show resistance under field conditions and the resistant phenotype is also resistant to T. colubriformis. Both species are highly aggregated in the susceptible subset of the population. While, we cannot yet exclude alternative explanations, our data are compatible with a strong genetic basis for this phenomenon.

Abstract
Although Nigerian West African Dwarf (WAD) goats are relatively resistant to infection with Haemonchus contortus and are also trypanotolerant, natural outbreaks of both infections are known to occur. Despite their relative resistance to H. contortus WAD goats nevertheless show variability in response phenotype and it was of interest to examine the effect of this variability on the outcome of concurrent trypanosome infection. Trypanosoma brucei infections were established in goats that were initially classified as good or poor responders to H. contortus. Thirty-nine goats were exposed to an escalating infection with H. contortus, and on the basis of their mean faecal egg counts (FEC) were allocated to high FEC (poor responders, 18 goats with the highest FEC) or low FEC (good responders, 18 goats with the lowest FEC) classes. Nine uninfected naive control goats were included to provide reference baseline values. Retrospective analysis of parasitological and pathological parameters after allocation into high/low FEC classes showed that FECs differed significantly, in both classes packed cell volume (PCV) values fell relative to naive controls, neither class lost weight and both generated marked IgG responses. All goats received anthelmintic on day 61, half of each group was infected with 50 million trypanosomes and on day 67, excepting the controls, all goats were challenged with 3000 L3 of H. contortus. Trypanosome parasitaemia was generally low, and marginally, but not significantly, higher in the low compared with high FEC class, peaking 12-16 days after exposure in both groups and then falling to below microscopically detectable levels (although still detectable by sub-inoculation into mice) by week 3. At autopsy (days 109/110), worm burdens were significantly higher in the trypanosome-infected goats from the high FEC class, relative to all other groups. Trypanosome infected goats showed a tendency (although not significant) towards higher FEC and, irrespective of their FEC class, had lower PCV values although body weight did not vary significantly. All goats challenged with H. contortus had higher antibody levels than naive controls, but neither trypanosome infection nor FEC class affected the magnitude of responses. These results confirm that WAD goats comprise a range of response phenotypes to initial H. contortus infection and that trypanotolerance is a key trait of this breed. Although immunity to nematode infection develops even in poor responders, these animals harbour higher nematode burdens during concurrent infection with T. brucei.

Abstract
The West African Dwarf (WAD) goat is known to be relatively resistant to infection with Haemonchus contortus. An experiment was carried out to assess variability in resistance under escalating trickle and single pulse challenge infection protocols. Thirty two 7-8 month old goats were subjected to trickle infection beginning with a thrice weekly dose of 100 L3 and increasing to 500 L3 by week 5, the last dose being administered on D30. Infection was abbreviated with fenbendazole on D32 and the animals challenged with 4000 L3 (=404-741L3/kg body weight) on D46 and necropsied on D81. The goats exhibited marked individual variability in faecal egg counts (FEC) and worm burdens (Wb). For convenience, we arranged the goats into FEC classes 1, 2 and 3, corresponding to peak counts of <1000, 1000-2500 and >2500 epg and Wb classes 1, 2 and 3, with counts of <50, 50-100 and >100 worms, respectively, broadly reflecting relatively resistant, intermediate and poorly resistant response phenotypes. Wb classes broadly reflected the FEC phenotypes and although there were no significant differences between the Wb of the FEC classes at necropsy, significant differences in FEC were detected when analysis was carried out only on Wb classes. There was also a significant positive correlation between FEC class on each of the days of challenge (D67 to D80) and worm burden at necropsy. In general, the goats showed strong resistance/tolerance to challenge, with more than 80% having Wb not exceeding 5% of the challenge dose, and only in class three goats were weight loss and anaemia detected in some animals. PCV and weight changes also closely reflected the FEC and Wb classes, with a significant negative correlation between each and Wb. Infection level did not significantly affect the sizes of either male or female worms and no significant difference was detected between the levels of circulating eosinophils in any FEC or Wb class. Overall, the data are consistent with the existence of a range of response phenotypes, which reflect variations in resistance of WAD goats to H. contortus infection, the genetic basis of which will be explored in future experiments.

Abstract
The capacity of young Nigerian West African Dwarf (WAD) goats to express good acquired immunity to their native geographic strain of Haemonchus contortus and the correlates of this responsiveness were studied in a laboratory experiment involving forty 7-8 month old kids. A primary immunising infection with 2000 L3 (equivalent to 260-450 L3/kg body weight) with or without challenge on D42 with 2000 L3 resulted in a mild chronic infection with a pre-patent period of 18-20 days and little or no reduction in worm burden between D14 and D56. In contrast, another group (D) of kids, whose immunising infection had been truncated with fenbendazole on D35 and later received similar challenge infection, developed good protection against challenge. Thus, worm burdens were largest in group E (challenge control), larger in group C (primary+challenge) and least in group D. Of the measures of infection used, namely faecal worm egg counts (FECs), circulating eosinophil (EOS) responses, packed cell volume (PCV) and body weight, FEC and EOS responses exhibited marked individual variability, but only FEC (geometric mean of transformed counts) and PCV showed strong correlation with worm burden. There was also a significant negative correlation between FEC and PCV. The size of inoculum used was well tolerated by the kids, as it induced only mild changes in PCV in some goats and no effect at all on body weights. This suggests that the WAD goat may possess a good measure of resistance to the pathogenic effects of its native strain of H. contortus. The wide individual variability in FEC and its strong relationships to worm burden and PCV are pointers to its likely genetic basis. There are, therefore, good prospects for further studies to identify H. contortus resistant genotypes among the WAD goat population.

Abstract
Concurrent African trypanosome and gastrointestinal helminth infections are prevalent in sub-humid savannah where they are endemic. However, acquired resistance in animals varies with their responder status and exposure. As a guide to study in the definitive hosts, the effects of Trypanosoma congolense infection on the development and maintenance of homologous Heligmosomoides polygyrus resistance were investigated in outbred TO mice. These mice were immunised by abbreviation of larval infection. Immune or naive mice were either infected with 500 infective larvae (L3) of H. polygyrus and/or 10(4) bloodstream forms of T. congolense or were not infected. The outcome of infection was monitored by routine parasitological and immunological techniques for 30 days after the day of the T. congolense infection. Significantly more immune mice concurrently infected with both parasites survived than did immune mice in which H. polygyrus was superimposed on a 10-day-old T. congolense infection. Although all the mice in this latter group died before the end of the experiment, larval immunisation prolonged their survival, relative to similarly treated naive mice. The antibody titres to H. polygyrus in the sera of immune mice challenged with H. polygyrus alone were significantly higher than those of immune mice concurrently infected with both parasites but the levels of protection obtained were comparable. It is concluded that T. congolense may not completely block the strong acquired resistance induced by abbreviated H. polygyrus larval infection in TO mice but is capable of interfering with protective responses, especially if the trypanosome infection occurs prior to H. polygyrus challenge infection.
