Dance Functional Outcome Survey: Development and Preliminary Analyses

Translation, cross-cultural adaptation, reliability and validity of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the 'Fit to Dance?' survey

BACKGROUND

The 'Fit to Dance?' survey has been used in a number of studies to understand the health and wellbeing of dancers. These data have not been collected in Brazil as there is no validated questionnaire available in Brazilian Portuguese, culturally validated in Brazil with a scope as broad and comprehensive as that of 'Fit to Dance?'.

OBJECTIVE

Translate into Brazilian Portuguese and culturally validate the questionnaire 'Fit to Dance?' in Brazil.

METHODS

This was a validity and reliability study of the Brazilian Portuguese version of the 'Fit to Dance?'

SURVEY

The stages of the research were: translation into the target language (Brazilian Portuguese), translation synthesis, translation validation and cross-cultural adaptation by a committee of experts in Dance Medicine and Science (DMS), reverse translation into English, pilot study (test/retest), and final version of the questionnaire.

RESULTS

The questionnaire was applied to 21 dancers of different dance genres, with an age average of 25 ± 7.0 years. Cronbach's alpha (0.705), ICC (0.984) and Kappa (0.794) results reached adequate values.

CONCLUSION

The Brazilian Portuguese version of the questionnaire 'Fit to Dance?' is effective, has adequate levels of validity and reliability, and can be used to report injuries and aspects of health and well-being of Brazilian dancers.

The Influence and Analysis of Multimedia Interaction on the Development of Dance

Since ancient times, dance has been widely loved by people. The history of dance has a long history, and people’s pursuit of dance has never stopped. However, with the development of modern technology, traditional dance has been unable to keep up with the pace of the times. Therefore, this article studies the influence of multimedia interaction on the development of dance. This article proposes that multimedia interaction has a great influence on the status quo of dance development. This article aims to study the role of multimedia interaction in dance development. In the eleven years since 2010, the technology of stage effects has developed rapidly. As you can imagine, not only the stage effects can bring a visual feast, but also the development space of dancers has been greatly improved. It can be seen that multimedia interaction is of great significance to the development of dance; with the rapid development of science and technology, multimedia technologies such as computer networks are widely used in all walks of life. The application in the field of dance art is gradually popularized, in which dance teaching and stage performance methods have undergone great changes with the in-depth popularization of multimedia. Therefore, this article must analyze the influence of multimedia interaction on the development of dance.

Psychometric Properties of the Dance Functional Outcome Survey (DFOS): Reliability, Validity, and Responsiveness

BACKGROUND

There are no outcomes measures that focus on the unique functional requirements of dancers.

OBJECTIVES

To evaluate test-retest reliability, internal consistency, construct validity, sensitivity, and responsiveness of the Dance Functional Outcome Survey (DFOS) in professional and preprofessional adult dancers.

METHODS

This prospective cohort study examined test-retest reliability of the DFOS in 198 healthy and injured dancers over 2 weeks, using intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC_2,1). In a sample of 725 healthy and injured dancers, the following were examined: (1) construct validity, by comparing the DFOS to the Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36) using Pearson correlations; (2) exploratory factor analysis and internal consistency; and (3) sensitivity, by generating receiver operating characteristic curves and determining area under the curve (AUC). In a subgroup of 47 injured dancers, we determined internal responsiveness across 4 time points using repeated-measures analysis of variance (P<.05). Injured dancers' scores were analyzed for floor and ceiling effects.

RESULTS

The DFOS demonstrated high test-retest reliability (ICC≥0.93). Single-factor loading in exploratory factor analysis supported unidimensionality of the scale, with high internal consistency (α = .96). The DFOS total score and activities-of-daily-living (ADL) and dance technique subscores had strong construct validity compared with scores on the SF-36 physical component summary (r≥0.77). This study found excellent sensitivity, with high AUC values (AUC≥0.91). There were significant differences across time for DFOS scores (P<.001), demonstrating responsiveness to change. There were no floor or ceiling effects.

CONCLUSION

The DFOS demonstrates acceptable psychometric performance as an outcome and screening measure for dancers. The DFOS is a useful tool to monitor both healthy state and functional limitation following lower extremity or low back injury in adult ballet and modern dancers.
