The effect of ancillary ligands on hydrocarbon C-H bond functionalization by uranyl photocatalysts

The aqueous uranyl dication has long been known to facilitate the UV light-induced decomposition of aqueous VOCs (volatile organic compounds), via the long-lived highly efficient, uranyl excited state. The lower-energy visible light excited uranyl ion is also able to cleave unactivated hydrocarbon C-H bonds, yet the development of this reactivity into controlled and catalytic C-H bond functionalization is still in its infancy, with almost all studies still focused on uranyl nitrate as the precatalyst. Here, hydrocarbon-soluble uranyl nitrate and chloride complexes supported by substituted phenanthroline (Ph2phen) ligands are compared to each other, and to the parent salts, as photocatalysts for the functionalization of cyclooctane by H atom abstraction. Analysis of the absorption and emission spectra, and emission lifetimes of Ph2phen-coordinated uranyl complexes demonstrate the utility of the ligand in light absorption in the photocatalysis, which is related to the energy and kinetic decay profile of the uranyl photoexcited state. Density functional theory computational analysis of the C-H activation steps in the reaction show how a set of dispersion forces between the hydrocarbon substrate and the Ph2phen ligand provide control over the H atom abstraction, and provide predictions of selectivity of H atom abstraction by the uranyl oxo of the ring C-H over the ethyl C-H in an ethylcyclohexane substrate.

Photouranium-Catalyzed C-F Activation Hydroxylation via Water Splitting

The C-F bond is the strongest covalent single bond (126 kcal/mol) in carbon-centered bonds, in which the highest electronegativity of fluorine (χ = 4) gives rise to the shortest bond length (1.38 Å) and the smallest van der Waals radius (rw = 1.47 Å), resulting in enormous challenges for activation and transformation. Herein, C-F conversion was realized via photouranium-catalyzed hydroxylation of unactivated aryl fluorides using water as a hydroxyl source to deliver multifunctional phenols under ambient conditions. The activation featured cascade sequences of single electron transfer (SET)/hydrogen atom transfer (HAT)/oxygen atom transfer (OAT), highly integrated from the excited uranyl cation. The *UO22+ prompted water splitting under mild photoexcitation, caging the active oxygen in a peroxo-bridged manner for the critical OAT process and releasing hydrogen via the HAT process.

Degradation of plastic wastes to commercial chemicals and monomers under visible light

Plastics are playing an incrementally extensive and irreplaceable role in human life, but with alarming cyclic unsustainability. Numerous attempts have been undertaken to recycle plastics, among which chemical recycling from waste plastics back to chemicals and monomers has attracted great attention. Herein, the depolymerization of nine types of plastics to commercial chemicals and monomers was achieved under ambient conditions via synergetic integrated uranyl-photocatalysis, which contains a process for converting five kinds of mixed plastics into a value-added product. The degradation processes were depicted in terms of variation in scanning electron microscopy imaging, distinction in the X-ray diffraction pattern, alteration in water contact angle, and dynamic in molecular weight distribution. Single electron transfer, hydrogen atom transfer, and oxygen atom transfer were synergistically involved in uranyl-photocatalysis, which were substantiated by mechanistic studies. Relying on flow system design, the chemical recycling of plastics was feasible for kilogram-scale degradation of post-consumer-waste polyethylene terephthalate bottles to commercial chemicals, displaying a promising practical application potential in the future.

Energy-structure-property relationships in uranium metal-organic frameworks

Located at the foot of the periodic table, uranium is a relatively underexplored element possessing rich chemistry. In addition to its high relevance to nuclear power, uranium shows promise for small molecule activation and photocatalysis, among many other powerful functions. Researchers have used metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) to harness uranium's properties, and in their quest to do so, have discovered remarkable structures and unique properties unobserved in traditional transition metal MOFs. More recently, (e.g. the last 8-10 years), theoretical calculations of framework energetics have supplemented structure-property studies in uranium MOFs (U-MOFs). In this Perspective, we summarize how these budding energy-structure-property relationships in U-MOFs enable a deeper understanding of chemical phenomena, enlarge chemical space, and elevate the field to targeted, rather than exploratory, discovery. Importantly, this Perspective encourages interdisciplinary connections between experimentalists and theorists by demonstrating how these collaborations have elevated the entire U-MOF field.

Uranyl nitrate as a recyclable homogeneous photocatalyst for selective cross-coupling of N-substituted amines and indoles

A homogeneous photocatalytic recyclable system for the selective radical-radical cross-coupling of N-substituted amines and indoles has been established. This system could conduct in water or acetonitrile, featuring the reuse of uranyl nitrate as the recyclable photocatalyst via a simple extraction. With this mild strategy in hand, good to excellent yields of cross-coupling products could be achieved even under the irradiation of sunlight, including 26 natural product derivatives and 16 natural product inspired re-engineered compounds. A radical-radical cross-coupling mechanism was newly proposed based on experimental evidence and reported literature. This strategy has been also applied to a gram scale synthesis to demonstrate its practical utility.

Organocatalysis with carbon nitrides

Carbon nitrides, a distinguished class of metal-free catalytic materials, have presented a good potential for chemical transformations and are expected to become prominent materials for organocatalysis. This is largely possible due to their low cost, exceptional thermal and chemical stability, non-toxicity, ease of functionalization, porosity development, etc. Especially, the carbon nitrides with increased porosity and nitrogen contents are more versatile than their bulk counterparts for catalysis. These N-rich carbon nitrides are discussed in the earlier parts of the review. Later, the review highlights the role of such carbon nitride materials for the various organic catalytic reactions including Knoevenagel condensation, oxidation, hydrogenation, esterification, transesterification, cycloaddition, and hydrolysis. The recently emerging concepts in carbon nitride-based organocatalysis have been given special attention. In each of the sections, the structure-property relationship of the materials was discussed and related to their catalysis action. Relevant comparisons with other catalytic materials are also discussed to realize their real potential value. The perspective, challenges, and future directions are also discussed. The overall objective of this review is to provide up-to-date information on new developments in carbon nitride-based organic catalysis reactions that could see them rising as prominent catalytic materials in the future.

Progress in solid state and coordination chemistry of actinides in China

In the past decade, the area of solid state chemistry of actinides has witnessed a rapid development in China, based on the significantly increased proportion of the number of actinide containing crystal structures reported by Chinese researchers from only 2% in 2010 to 36% in 2021. In this review article, we comprehensively overview the synthesis, structure, and characterizations of representative actinide solid compounds including oxo-compounds, organometallic compounds, and endohedral metallofullerenes reported by Chinese researchers. In addition, Chinese researchers pioneered several potential applications of actinide solid compounds in terms of adsorption, separation, photoelectric materials, and photo-catalysis, which are also briefly discussed. It is our hope that this contribution not only calls for further development of this area in China, but also arouses new research directions and interests in actinide chemistry and material sciences.

Cluster Preface: Perspectives on Organoheteroatom and Organometallic Chemistry

Xuefeng Jiang is a professor at East China Normal University. He received his B.S. degree in 2003 from Northwest University (China). He then joined Professor Shengming Ma’s research group at the Shanghai Institute of Organic Chemistry (SIOC), Chinese Academy of Sciences, where he received his Ph.D. degree in 2008. From 2008 to 2011, Xuefeng worked as a postdoctoral researcher on the total synthesis of natural products in the research group of Professor K. C. Nicolaou at The Scripps Research Institute (TSRI). His independent research interests have focused on green organosulfur chemistry and methodology-­oriented total synthesis.
