Abstract
Treating lactating sows with chorionic gonadotropins may allow controlling their post-weaning reproductive function, despite the occurrence of anestrous during lactation. This article reviews the potential effectiveness of treatment with both equine and human chorionic gonadotropins (eCG and hCG, respectively) during lactation on the control of estrus expression and ovulation in weaned sows. The use of 1,000 IU hCG at 24 and 48 h postpartum may induce ovulation in the treated sows, but the ovulation rate may be variable. Pregnancy rates may be improved with combined treatment after the second week of lactation with both chorionic gonadotropins: 1,500 IU eCG plus 500 - 1,000 hCG; or 1,000 IU eCG plus 1,000 IU hCG. Treatment with eCG (1,000 - 2,000 IU) at the end of lactation may result in acceptable estrus expression and ovulation rates, although with marginal benefit for pregnancy rates. The subsequent response to treatments with chorionic gonadotropins during lactation is likely influenced by the treatment period, the suckling frequency during lactation, and the boar exposure during the weaning-to-estrus interval. A better understanding of the efficiency of such steroid-free treatments is increasingly relevant due to the constraints of the use of steroid hormones in livestock reproductive management.

Abstract
Mares resume ovarian activity rapidly after foaling. Besides follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH), the pituitary synthesizes prolactin and growth hormone which stimulate insulin-like growth factor (IGF) synthesis in the liver. We tested the hypothesis that follicular growth is initiated already antepartum, mares with early and delayed ovulation differ in IGF-1 release and that there is an additional IGF-1 synthesis in the placenta. Plasma concentrations of LH, FSH, IGF-1, IGF-2, activin and prolactin. IGF-1, IGF-2, prolactin and their receptors in placental tissues were analyzed at the mRNA and protein level. Follicular growth was determined from 15 days before to 15 days after foaling in 14 pregnancies. Mares ovulating within 15 days postpartum formed group OV (n=5) and mares not ovulating within 15 days group NOV (n=9). Before foaling, follicles with a diameter >1 cm were present in all mares and their number increased over time (p<0.05). Follicle growth after foaling was more pronounced in OV mares (day p<0.001, group p<0.05, day x group p<0.05) in parallel to an increase in LH concentration (p<0.001, day x group p<0.001) while FSH increased (p<0.001) similarly in both groups. Plasma concentrations of IGF-1 and prolactin peaked one day after foaling (p<0.001). The IGF-1 mRNA abundance was higher in the allantochorion but lower in the amnion of OV versus NOV mares (group p=0.01, localization x group p<0.01). The IGF-1 receptor mRNA was most abundant in the allantochorion (p<0.001) and IGF-1 protein was expressed in placental tissue without differences between groups. In conclusion, follicular growth in mares is initiated before foaling and placental IGF-1 may enhance resumption of ovulatory cycles.

Abstract
Blood samples were collected from six Ghungroo sows on the day of farrowing, day 7, day 15, day 30, day 45 and day 60 post farrowing to investigate the alterations in the physio-biochemical, endocrine and in vitro activity of immune effector cells in Ghungroo sow during different days of lactation cycle. The hematological parameters were evaluated by standard hematological procedure. Blood biochemical and endocrine profiles were evaluated by commercially available kits. In vitro phagocytic activity and lymphocyte proliferation response were evaluated by colorimetric NBT and MTT assay respectively. Haemoglobin, packed cell volume (PCV) and total erythrocyte counts (TEC) increased significantly during the early lactation periods from the day of farrowing. The lymphocyte numbers decreased significantly from the day of farrowing to the 1st week of lactation cycle. Blood glucose and cholesterol level decreased significantly from the day of farrowing till first week of lactation cycle. The phagocytic activity of neutrophils was significantly higher on the day of farrowing and decreased till 30th day of lactation. The T4 level was higher on the day of farrowing and decreased significantly till 15th day of lactation. The data obtained in our investigation will help to formulate the managemental and therapeutic interventions during the period of transition from gestation to lactation in sows.

Abstract
AbstractThe aim of the study was to investigate the influence of different energy levels during a 4-week lactation on the regulation of the metabolic hormones somatotropin (GH), prolactin, insulin and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). A total of 21 crossbred sows (German Landrace × Duroc) were cannulated for daily blood collection from 3 weeks before parturition until 2 weeks after weaning and for weekly window sampling (every 20 min for 10 h). Nineteen sows were given 2·8 kg food during late gestation, 5·0 kg food during lactation and 2·8 kg food per day after weaning and two sows were given food at a restricted level (3·0 kg) during lactation. In the 19 sows, the different energy balance was induced by allocation of different numbers of sucking piglets to the respective sows. One group of sows suckled seven piglets and served as a control (C; no. = 7) and another group suckled 10 to 12 piglets and was energy deficient (D). After the study, the sows of the deficient group were, based on their litter weight gain from parturition until weaning, divided into low (D-L; no. = 6) or high (D-H; no. = 6) litter weight gain. The D-H sows lost more body weight during lactation than C and had lower glucose and higher nonesterified fatty acids levels before morning feeding. GH and prolactin increased around parturition and their secretory profiles during lactation were altered by the frequent sucking stimulus, whereby the access of the piglets to their dams was not controlled. During lactation, GH and prolactin were highest in D-H sows. The results suggest a possible role of not only GH but also of prolactin in nutrient partitioning to the mammary gland just before the start of lactation and for minimizing the adverse effects of a negative energy balance. Furthermore, insulin and IGF-1 increased around parturition in all sows. Insulin was higher before and after feeding and the highest levels were found in C and D-L sows. The regulation patterns of insulin and IGF-1 indicate that the lactating sow is able to mobilize enough energy from body reserves to prevent metabolic disorders, even during a period with deficient energy supply. This is contrary to the regulation in the dairy cow, where the negative energy balance is coupled with a severe glucose deficit during phases of high milk yield, which causes decreased levels of insulin and IGF-1. In the sow, the glucose intake with the food meets the glucose requirement for metabolic pathways also during a deficient lactational energy intake. Therefore, in sows IGF-1 can be stimulated by increased GH levels via the GH receptor in the liver during a state of nutritional energy deficiency and the fact that sows can compensate a deficient metabolic state much better than cows is also reflected in the respective endocrinology.

AbstractThe timing for introducingad libitumlactation feeding around farrowing was studied in an experiment comprising 20 blocks of three littermate sows and a total of 1085 piglets in 90 farrowings. Sows were given 2·2 kg daily of a diet containing 12·1 MJ metabolizable energy and 120 g digestible crude protein per kgfrom service untilad libitumfeeding was introduced either 4 days before expected farrowing (treatment BEF), the farrowing day (AT), or 3 days after farrowing (AFT). BEF and AT sows had a higher total daily food consumption during the experimental period, 5 days before farrowing to weaning at 35 (±3) days, than AFT sows (7·2, 7·2 and 6·6 kg, respectively). BEF and AT sows tended to have deeper ultrasonic backfat (BF) than AFT sows. The mobilization of body reserves during lactation was modest as reflected in negligible losses of live weight (LW) and BF, low serum concentrations of non-esterified fatty acids and creatinine, together with increasing serum urea concentrations as well as the high proportion of sows served within 8 days after weaning (over 90% of the primiparous sows). Sow rectal temperature increased on the farrowing day but was also influenced by feeding level. No cases of agalactia post partum were diagnosed. Litter size, piglet LW, piglet mortality and creep food consumption did not differ between treatments, although there was a tendency for lower LW and increased mortality, particularly of piglets crushed by the sow, in litters of AFT sows. It can be concluded that there was no advantage in delaying the introduction ofad libitumfeeding until after farrowing.

Abstract
Mammary uptake of nutrients is dependent on their availability in the circulation but the role of hormones in that process is not known. Arteriovenous differences (AVD) of glucose and key hormones across the mammary glands were therefore determined in sows fed varying levels of protein. Sixteen lactating sows (four/dietary treatment) were fed a 7.8, 13.0, 18.2 or 23.5% crude protein (CP) isocaloric diet throughout lactation and their litters were standardized to 11 pigs within 48 h of birth. The anterior main mammary vein and a carotid artery were cannulated on day 4+/-1 of lactation and blood samples were collected every 30 min over 6h on days 10, 14, 18 and 22 of lactation to measure glucose, insulin, IGF-I, and prolactin (PRL) concentrations. Amino acid data from these sows were previously published and used here to determine residual correlations. Dietary treatments had no effect on any of the insulin or PRL variables measured (P>0.1) and, on day 18 only, IGF-I AVD was greater (P=0.05) for sows on the 23.5% compared to the 18.2% diet. On days 18 and 22, sows fed the 13% CP diet had greater arterial, venous and AVD glucose concentrations than sows fed other diets (P<0.05). Total arterial amino acid concentrations were correlated to arterial insulin (P<0.001) and PRL (P<0.05) concentrations, but not to those of IGF-I (P>0.1). Mammary AVD for total (P<0.001) and essential amino acids (P<0.05) were correlated to arterial concentrations of insulin, but not to those of IGF-I (P>0.1) or PRL (P>0.1). Mammary AVD of both total (P<0.01) and essential (P<0.05) amino acids were also correlated to mammary PRL AVD. In conclusion, dietary protein level did not affect mammary AVD and circulating lactogenic hormone concentrations. Yet, amino acid utilization by the sow mammary gland seems to be regulated via both circulating insulin concentrations and PRL binding to and uptake by porcine mammary cells.

Abstract
Ghrelin, the endogenous ligand of the growth hormone (GH) secretagogue receptor, is considered a pleiotropic regulator involved in a large array of functions, including control of energy balance, regulation of food intake and, more recently, modulation of the reproductive axis. The present study was aimed at determining the changes in plasma concentrations of acyl-ghrelin in pregnant and lactating sows, with special emphasis on the relationship with the levels of GH, leptin, non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1). Blood samples were collected via jugular venipuncture from 22 multiparous sow 30, 60 and 90 days after artificial insemination, 7 and 21 days after farrowing and at first oestrus post-weaning. Plasma concentrations of acyl-ghrelin, leptin, GH and IGF-1 were quantified by validated radioimmunoassay; NEFA were determined using a colorimetric procedure. Plasma acyl ghrelin levels were highest at 30 days of pregnancy and decreased thereafter and during lactation. At the beginning of lactation, GH, IGF-1 and NEFA concentrations significantly increased, while a significant reduction occurred in leptin. In conclusion, ghrelin concentrations in sow maternal circulation does not seem to play an important role in maintaining circulating GH levels during lactation; moreover, ghrelin is not associated with leptin, NEFA and IGF-1 levels.

Abstract
This study was designed to test the degree of protein loss that may be sustained by lactating sows before milk biosynthesis and ovarian function will be impaired. First-parity Camborough x Canabrid sows were allocated to receive isocaloric diets (61 +/- 2.0 MJ of ME/d) and one of three levels of protein intake in lactation: 1) 878 g of CP and 50 g of lysine/d (n = 8), 2) 647 g of CP and 35 g of lysine/d (n = 7), or 3) 491 g of CP and 24 g of lysine/d (n = 10). Every 5 d during a 23-d lactation, sow live weight, backfat depth, and litter weight were recorded, and a preprandial blood sample was collected. Milk samples were collected on d 10 and 20 of lactation. Sows were slaughtered on the day of weaning, and liver and ovarian variables were measured. Lower dietary protein intakes elicited progressively larger live weight losses during lactation (-13, -17, and -28 +/- 2.3 kg; P < 0.001), but similar and minimal backfat losses (-1.3 +/- 0.29 mm). Approximately 7, 9, and 16% of the calculated body protein mass at parturition was mobilized by d 23. Lactation performance did not differ among treatments until d 20, at which time approximately 5, 6, and 12% of the calculated protein mass at parturition had been lost. The milk protein concentration on d 20 of lactation reflected the amount of body protein lost, and was lowest (P < 0.05) in sows that lost the most protein. After d 20, piglet growth rate decreased (P < 0.05) in a manner related to the amount of body protein lost. At weaning, ovarian function was suppressed in sows that had mobilized the most body protein; they had fewer medium-sized follicles (> 4 mm; P < 0.05), their follicles contained less (P < 0.01) follicular fluid, and had lower estradiol (P < 0.05) and IGF-I (P < 0.10) contents. Culture media containing 10% pooled follicular fluid (vol/vol) from high-protein-loss sows were less able to support nuclear and cytoplasmic maturation of oocytes in vitro, evidenced by more oocytes arrested at metaphase I (P < 0.05) and showing limited cumulus cell expansion (P < 0.06). Plasma insulin and IGF-I concentrations did not seem to be related to the observed differences in animal performance. Our data suggest that no decline in lactational performance or ovarian function when a sow loses approximately 9 to 12% of its parturition protein mass. However, progressively larger decreases in animal performance are associated with a loss of larger amounts of body protein mass at parturition.

Abstract
Low protein intake during lactation has been demonstrated to increase the loss of body protein and to reduce the reproductive performance of female pigs. The objectives of the current experiment were 1) to determine whether protein (lysine) restriction alters levels of somatotropic hormones, insulin, follicle-stimulating hormone, and leptin around weaning, and 2) to evaluate the relationships between these eventual alterations and postweaning reproductive performance. One day after farrowing, crossbred primiparous sows were randomly allocated to one of two diets containing 20% crude protein and 1.08% lysine (C, n = 12) or 10% crude protein and 0.50% lysine (L, n = 14) during a 28-d lactation. Diets provided similar amounts of metabolizable energy (3.1 Mcal/kg). Feed allowance was restricted to 4.2 kg/d throughout lactation, and litter size was standardized to 10 per sow within 5 d after farrowing. Catheters were fitted in the jugular vein of 21 sows around d 22 of lactation. Serial blood samples were collected 1 d before (day W - 1) and 1 d after (day W + 1) weaning, and single blood samples were collected daily from weaning until d 6 postweaning (day W + 6). Sows were monitored for estrus and inseminated. They were slaughtered at d 30 of gestation. During lactation, litter weight gain was similar among treatment groups. Reduced protein intake increased (P < 0.001) sow weight loss (-30 vs -19 kg) and estimated protein mobilization throughout lactation (-4.1 vs -2.0 kg). On day W - 1, L sows had higher (P < 0.02) plasma glutamine and alanine concentrations, but lower (P < 0.05) plasma tryptophan and urea than C sows. Mean and basal plasma GH were higher (P < 0.001), whereas plasma IGF-I and mean insulin were lower in L than in C sows on day W - 1. Preprandial leptin did not differ between treatments on day W - 1, but was higher (P < 0.01) in L sows than in C sows on day W + 1. Mean FSH concentrations were similar in both treatments on day W - 1 (1.3 ng/mL), but L sows had greater (P < 0.001) mean FSH on day W + 1 than C sows (1.6 vs 1.2 ng/mL). The weaning-to-estrus interval (5 +/- 1 d) was similar in both groups. Ovulation rate was lower in L than in C sows (20.0 +/- 1 vs 23.4 +/- 1, P < 0.05). No obvious relationships between reproductive traits and metabolic hormone data were observed. In conclusion, these results provide evidence that protein (lysine) restriction throughout lactation alters circulating concentrations of somatotropic hormones and insulin at the end of lactation and has a negative impact on postweaning ovulation rate.

Abstract
It has been established that sows up- or down-regulate their milk production as the frequency of nursings is changed. The amount of udder massage by piglets might also influence milk production. To investigate whether these effects are associated with changes in prolactin or insulin levels, we enforced five sows each to nurse either every 35 min (MIN35) or every 70 min (MIN70) over a 26- to 28-hr period. Milk production was measured during the first 24 hr of this period. During the last three to four nursings, blood was collected every 5 min. Plasma prolactin levels increased after milk ejection (P < 0.05), whereas insulin levels increased only briefly in MIN70 sows. Sows nursing every 35 min had lower basal (P < 0.001) and maximal (P < 0.05) concentrations of insulin than MIN70 sows. There were no differences between the two groups in prolactin levels. Nursings with a postejection udder massage longer than 90 s tended to induce a higher increase in prolactin (P < 0.1) than nursings with a shorter massage. When the effects of imposed nursing frequency were removed, there was an across-sows positive residual correlation between average prolactin levels (P < 0.05) and the duration of post-ejection udder massage during the preceding 24 hr. We conclude that when milk production of a sow is changed by altering the nursing frequency within natural limits, the necessary alteration in catabolic state of energy metabolism may be associated with altered insulin levels. The duration of udder massage in a single nursing might have only a slight immediate impact on prolactin levels, but may influence prolactin levels more substantially if increased for a period of 24 hr.

Abstract
This experiment was designed to compare the effects of high ambient temperature and of feed restriction on plasma hormones and metabolites in primiparous lactating sows. Females were exposed to a constant thermoneutral (20 degrees C) or hot environment (30 degrees C) during lactation. Sows housed at 30 degrees C were given free access to feed (30AL: n = 12), whereas those housed at 20 degrees C were either pair-fed with those at 30 degrees C (20RF: n = 6) or were fed ad libitum (20AL: n = 6). A jugular vein catheter was surgically inserted in all sows at 100 d of gestation. Absorption of nutrients during the meal induced significant increases in plasma glucose, insulin, and glucagon, and a decrease in nonesterified fatty acids on Day 19 of lactation and Day 1 postweaning (P < 0.05). On Day 19, feed restriction at 20 degrees C was associated with higher plasma glucagon before the meal, lower plasma insulin after the meal and a lower insulin-to-glucagon ratio (I/GA) before and after the meal (P < 0.05). On Day 19, mean plasma concentrations measured in 30AL females were between those measured in 20AL and 20RF sows for nonesterified fatty acids and glucagon before feeding, and for glucose, nonesterified fatty acids, insulin, and glucagon after feeding. None of the differences between the 30AL and the 20RF groups was significant (P < 0.1). On Day 19, the only significant differences between the 30AL and 20AL groups were observed after the meal for plasma insulin and I/GA. Plasma insulin-like growth factor-I increased after farrowing in 20AL and 30AL sows only (P < 0.05). It was higher in 20AL than in 20RF and 30AL sows on Days 4 and 19 of lactation (P < 0.05). Overall, underfeeding at 20 degrees C induced changes in plasma insulin, glucagon, I/GA, and insulin-like growth factor-I, which would favor gluconeogenesis and body-reserve mobilization during lactation. Differences in glucagon and I/GA before the meal between well-fed sows at 20 degrees C and heat-exposed sows were attenuated, which could have detrimental consequences on glucose availability to the mammary gland and hence on milk production at 30 degrees C.
