Modification of forearm vascular function following short-term handgrip exercise training

The immediate effects of kinesiology taping on cutaneous blood flow in healthy humans under resting conditions: A randomised controlled repeated-measures laboratory study

BACKGROUND

Kinesiology taping (KT) is used in musculoskeletal practice for preventive and rehabilitative purposes. It is claimed that KT improves blood flow in the microcirculation by creating skin convolutions and that this reduces swelling and facilitates healing of musculoskeletal injuries. There is a paucity of physiological studies evaluating the effect of KT on cutaneous blood microcirculation.

OBJECTIVES

The purpose of this parallel-group controlled laboratory repeated measures design study was to evaluate the effects of KT on cutaneous blood microcirculation in healthy human adults using a dual wavelength (infrared and visible-red) laser Doppler Imaging (LDI) system. KT was compared with rigid taping and no taping controls to isolate the effects associated with the elasticity of KT.

METHODS

Forty-five healthy male and female human adults were allocated to one of the three interventions using constrained randomisation following the pre-intervention measurement: (i) KT (ii) ST (standard taping) (iii) NT (no taping). Cutaneous blood perfusion was measured using LDI in the ventral surface of forearm at pre-intervention, during-intervention and post-intervention in a normothermic environment at resting conditions.

RESULTS

Mixed ANOVA of both infrared and visible-red datasets revealed no statistically significant interaction between Intervention and Time. There was statistically significant main effect for Time but not Intervention.

CONCLUSION

KT does not increase cutaneous blood microcirculation in healthy human adults under resting physiological conditions in a normothermic environment. On the contrary, evidence suggests that taping, regardless of the elasticity in the tape, is associated with immediate reductions in cutaneous blood flow.

Heterogeneity in the vasodilatory function of individual extremities

Objectives

Heterogeneity and homogeneity in the flow-mediated dilation of the human body's individual extremities are not fully understood, and the relationship between flow-mediated dilation and local muscle activity is unclear. We assessed the flow-mediated dilation of four individual extremities and sought to determine the contribution of local muscle activity (evaluated as muscle strength) to the flow-mediated dilation in each extremity.

Methods

Thirteen healthy young right-handed nonactive males participated. The flow-mediated dilation in the brachial and popliteal arteries at both arms and legs was assessed by ultrasound Doppler. Muscle strength was evaluated as the grip strength and knee extension.

Results

There was a significant difference in the brachial artery (BA)-FMD values between the subjects' dominant and non-dominant sides (8.0 ± 2.8 vs. 5.5 ± 2.2%, p < 0.05), whereas the two sides showed similar popliteal artery (PA)-FMD values. There was no significant correlation in flow-mediated dilation between the dominant brachial artery and popliteal artery. The BA-FMD was significantly correlated with the grip strength in both upper extremities (dominant: r = 0.562, non-dominant: r = 0.548; p < 0.05, respectively).

Conclusion

These results demonstrated heterogeneity in the flow-mediated dilation of individual extremities. We observed that local muscle activity can affect the local vascular function. Measurements of vasodilatory function in individual extremities should thus be carefully considered.

Cardiovascular function is related to neuromuscular performance in Parkinson's disease

Aim: The current study examined the relationship of handgrip, leg and arm neuromuscular performance with cardiovascular function in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD). Materials & methods: Blood pressure, vascular measures and handgrip, shoulder and leg neuromuscular performance were obtained in PD persons and healthy controls. Results: The data reveal that muscular and cardiovascular functions are altered (p < 0.05) in PD. Most importantly, regression indicates that altered central and peripheral cardiovascular function measures demonstrate a moderately strong relationship (p < 0.05) with deteriorated handgrip (R2-range = 0.196–0.257), shoulder (R2-range = 0.146–0.289) and leg (R2-range = 0.19–0.35) neuromuscular performance in PD. Conclusion: These results suggest that deteriorated neuromuscular performance and cardiovascular function are related in PD. Future studies are needed to determine that developing muscular strength might contribute to improving cardiovascular function in PD.

Associations between vasodilatory capacity, physical activity and sleep among younger and older adults

INTRODUCTION

Exercise promotes cardiovascular health through its direct impact on the vascular endothelium. Conversely, poor sleep quality is associated with endothelial dysfunction, which may explain the increased cardiovascular disease amongst poor sleepers. Yet, the influence of physical activity and poor sleep quality on vascular health is not clear.

PURPOSE

This study examined the relationships between forearm vasodilatory capacity, self-reported sleep quality and free-living, actigraphy-derived energy expenditure in a group of young and older community dwelling adults.

METHODS

Venous occlusion plethysmography determined baseline and peak forearm blood flow following reactive hyperemia. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Measures of body composition were assessed using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry.

RESULTS

A total of 104 (61 young; 43 old) participants completed the study. In general, younger participants were more active, as determined by steps per day and average daily energy expenditure, but reported poorer sleep quality. In the combined sample, those who reported moderate sleep disturbances (PSQI total score; 11-15) had significantly lower vasodilatory capacity (16.8 ± 7.6 ml/100 ml/min) compared to those who reported no sleep disturbance (PSQI total score; 0-5) (22.3 ± 7.2 ml/100 ml/min) or mild sleep disturbance (PSQI total score; 6-10) (22.3 ± 8.1 ml/100 ml/min) (p < 0.01). After adjustment for physical activity, total body fat and age, moderately poor sleep remained an independent predictor of forearm vasodilatory capacity.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings suggest that any positive vascular benefits accrued through increased physical activity might be offset by the negative consequences of chronically disturbed sleep.

Forearm Skin Blood Flow After Kinesiology Taping in Healthy Soccer Players: An Exploratory Investigation

CONTEXT

Kinesiology tape (KT) has become popular among athletes for both injury prevention and rehabilitation due to its reported therapeutic effects, including facilitation of lymphatic flow and enhanced peripheral blood flow. However, evidence to support such claims is insufficient.

OBJECTIVE

To determine whether KT improves skin blood flow (SkBF) responses in young, elite soccer players.

DESIGN

Randomized crossover study.

SETTING

Research laboratory.

PATIENTS OR OTHER PARTICIPANTS

Thirteen healthy, elite, adolescent male soccer players (age = 14.7 ± 0.6 years).

INTERVENTION(S)

Participants completed 2 experimental trials; during trial 1, the volar aspect of the dominant forearm was taped. Forearm SkBF was measured within the taped area and 3 cm lateral to the taped area. During trial 2, no tape was applied to either site. Both trials were performed within 7 days.

MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE(S)

Baseline and maximal thermally (42°C) stimulated SkBF responses were assessed using laser Doppler flowmetry. Continuously measured SkBF and derived mean arterial pressure obtained at 5-minute intervals were used to calculate cutaneous vascular conductance (CVC), the primary outcome measure.

RESULTS

No differences were observed for baseline SkBF or CVC between trials or measurement sites. After local heating, no differences were evident for SkBF or CVC between trials or measurement sites.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings suggest that, in healthy, trained adolescent males, KT was not associated with increased forearm SkBF.

Blood flow restricted exercise and vascular function

It is established that regular aerobic training improves vascular function, for example, endothelium-dependent vasodilatation and arterial stiffness or compliance and thereby constitutes a preventative measure against cardiovascular disease. In contrast, high-intensity resistance training impairs vascular function, while the influence of moderate-intensity resistance training on vascular function is still controversial. However, aerobic training is insufficient to inhibit loss in muscular strength with advancing age; thus, resistance training is recommended to prevent sarcopenia. Recently, several lines of study have provided compelling data showing that exercise and training with blood flow restriction (BFR) leads to muscle hypertrophy and strength increase. As such, BFR training might be a novel means of overcoming the contradiction between aerobic and high-intensity resistance training. Although it is not enough evidence to obtain consensus about impact of BFR training on vascular function, available evidences suggested that BFR training did not change coagulation factors and arterial compliance though with inconsistence results in endothelial function. This paper is a review of the literature on the impact of BFR exercise and training on vascular function, such as endothelial function, arterial compliance, or other potential factors in comparison with those of aerobic and resistance training.

Brachial artery modifications to blood flow-restricted handgrip training and detraining

Low load resistance training with blood flow restriction (BFR) can increase muscle size and strength, but the implications on the conduit artery are uncertain. We examined the effects of low-load dynamic handgrip training with and without BFR, and detraining, on measures of brachial artery function and structure. Nine male participants (26 ± 4 yr, 178 ± 3 cm, 78 ± 10 kg) completed 4 wk (3 days/wk) of dynamic handgrip training at 40% 1 repetition maximum (1RM). In a counterbalanced manner, one forearm trained under BFR (occlusion cuff at 80 mmHg) and the other under nonrestricted (CON) conditions. Brachial artery function [flow-mediated dilation (FMD)] and structure (diameter) were assessed using Doppler ultrasound. Measurements were made before training (pretraining), after training (posttraining), and after 2-wk no training (detraining). Brachial artery diameter at rest, in response to 5-min ischemia (peak diameter), and ischemic exercise (maximal diameter) increased by 3.0%, 2.4%, and 3.1%, respectively, after BFR training but not after CON. FMD did not change at any time point in either arm. Vascular measures in the BFR arm returned to baseline after 2 wk detraining with no change after CON. The data demonstrate that dynamic low-load handgrip training with BFR induced transient adaptations to conduit artery structure but not function.

Exercise and arterial adaptation in humans: uncoupling localized and systemic effects

Previous studies have established effects of exercise training on arterial wall thickness, remodeling, and function in humans, but the extent to which these changes are locally or systemically mediated is unclear. We examined the brachial arteries of the dominant (D) and nondominant (ND) upper limbs of elite racquet sportsmen and compared them to those of matched healthy inactive controls. Carotid and superficial femoral artery responses were also assessed in both groups. High-resolution duplex ultrasound was used to examine resting diameter, wall thickness, peak diameter, and blood flow. We found larger resting arterial diameter in the preferred arm of the athletes (4.9 ± 0.5 mm) relative to their nonpreferred arm (4.3 ± 0.4 mm, P < 0.05) and both arms of control subjects (D: 4.1 ± 0.4 mm; ND: 4.0 ± 0.4, P < 0.05). Similar limb-specific differences were also evident in brachial artery dilator capacity (5.5 ± 0.5 vs. 4.8 ± 0.4, 4.8 ± 0.6, and 4.8 ± 0.6 mm, respectively; P < 0.05) following glyceryl trinitrate administration and peak blood flow (1,118 ± 326 vs. 732 ± 320, 737 ± 219, and 698 ± 174 ml/min, respectively; P < 0.05) following ischemic handgrip exercise. In contrast, athletes demonstrated consistently lower wall thickness in carotid (509 ± 55 μm), brachial (D: 239 ± 100 μm; ND: 234 ± 133 μm), and femoral (D: 479 ± 38 μm; ND: 479 ± 42 μm) arteries compared with control subjects (carotid: 618 ± 74 μm; brachial D: 516 ± 100 μm; ND: 539 ± 129 μm; femoral D: 634 ± 155 μm; ND: 589 ± 112 μm; all P < 0.05 vs. athletes), with no differences between the limbs of either group. These data suggest that localized effects of exercise are evident in the remodeling of arterial size, whereas arterial wall thickness appears to be affected by systemic factors.

The impact of exercise training on the diameter dilator response to forearm ischaemia in healthy men

AIM

Recent studies found differences between groups in the rate of diameter increase following the flow-mediated dilation (FMD). Whilst exercise training alters the magnitude of the FMD, little is known about the impact of exercise training on the rate of diameter increase. The aim of this study is to examine post-cuff deflation changes in brachial artery diameter following 5 min forearm ischaemia every 2 weeks across 8-weeks of a handgrip exercise training regimen.

METHODS

Post-deflation changes in brachial artery diameter following 5-min of ischaemia were examined before, after and every 2-weeks across an 8-week handgrip training programme in healthy young men (n = 11) using echo-Doppler.

RESULTS

The magnitude of dilation increased at week 2-4-6, but returned towards baseline values at week 8 (anova: P = 8.001). The time-to-peak diameter (42 ± 15s) demonstrated a significant prolongation at week 4 (77 ± 32s), but returned towards baseline values at weeks 6 and 8 (anova: P < 0.001). The rate of diameter increase did not differ across the intervention.

CONCLUSION

Exercise training in healthy subjects is initially characterized by a larger dilation. Since the rate of dilation did not change, a longer time-to-peak dilation was necessary to achieve the increase in magnitude of dilation. As exercise training continues, the timing and magnitude of the peak diameter response returns to near baseline levels.

Impact of chronic intermittent external compressions on forearm blood flow capacity in humans

During dynamic exercise, the vasculature embedded within skeletal muscle intermittently collapses due to increased intramuscular pressure (IMP). The aim of this study was to ascertain whether oscillations in IMP during muscle contractions independently contribute to exercise training-induced increases in blood flow capacity (BFC). Based on IMP measurements during handgrip exercise, we attempted to mimic the action of repeated vascular compressions by using external inflatable cuffs. Thus, 24 healthy young male subjects underwent a 4-week program (5 days/week, 1 h/day) of application of external compressions of the non-dominant forearm, while the dominant limb served as an internal control. To evaluate the impact of compression pressures of different magnitudes, subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 50, 100 and 150 mmHg of external compression. Prior to the intervention and after 2 and 4 weeks of treatment, we measured peak forearm blood flow (PBF) (Doppler ultrasound) and calculated peak vascular conductance (PVC) following 10 min of forearm ischemia. In the 50 and 100 mmHg groups, application of intermittent compressions did not alter PBF in either control or intervention forearms. In the 150 mmHg group, there was a trend (P = 0.04) for greater increases in PBF from baseline after 4 weeks in the intervention forearm compared to the control forearm (delta PBF: 4.2 ± 2.5 vs. -2.1 ± 2.0 (ml(100 ml)(-1) min(-1)), in the intervention and control forearms, respectively), but the changes in PVC were not significant (P = 0.1). These findings suggest that repeated oscillations in IMP contribute minimally to exercise-induced increase in forearm BFC in healthy young humans.

Rapid vascular modifications to localized rhythmic handgrip training and detraining: vascular conditioning and deconditioning

Despite the evidence describing the rapid vascular function modifications to commencement and cessation of large muscle exercises (i.e. cycling), no studies examined the time-course vascular modifications to localized training and detraining. This study aimed to examine the effects of 4-week rhythmic handgrip exercise training and 2-week detraining on reactive hyperemic forearm blood flow and vascular resistance in 11 young men. Rhythmic handgrip exercise was performed in the non-dominant forearm for 20 min/day, 5 days/week, at 60% of maximum voluntary contraction for 4 weeks, followed by 2 weeks of no training. Forearm blood flow and vascular resistance were evaluated, in both arms, at rest and following arterial occlusion. These vascular function indices were obtained in five visits; before, after 1 and 4 week(s) of training as well as after 1 and 2 week(s) of training cessation. Resting cardiovascular measures were not altered during the study period. A 2 (arms) x 5 (visits) ANOVA revealed significant arms-by-visits interactions for reactive hyperemic forearm blood flow (p = 0.02) and vascular resistance (p = 0.02). Subsequent comparison demonstrated increased trained forearm reactive hyperemic blood flow 1 week after training, then returned to pre-training values 1 week following training cessation. In contrast, vascular resistance decreased 1 week after training commencement, only to return to pretraining level 1 week after training cessation. These results indicate a rapid, unilateral improvement in regional reactive hyperemic blood flow and vascular resistance following localized exercise-training. However, the improvements are transient and return to pretraining levels 1 week after detraining.

Higher blood flow and circulating NO products offset high-altitude hypoxia among Tibetans

The low barometric pressure at high altitude causes lower arterial oxygen content among Tibetan highlanders, who maintain normal levels of oxygen use as indicated by basal and maximal oxygen consumption levels that are consistent with sea level predictions. This study tested the hypothesis that Tibetans resident at 4,200 m offset physiological hypoxia and achieve normal oxygen delivery by means of higher blood flow enabled by higher levels of bioactive forms of NO, the main endothelial factor regulating blood flow and vascular resistance. The natural experimental study design compared Tibetans at 4,200 m and U.S. residents at 206 m. Eighty-eight Tibetan and 50 U.S. resident volunteers (18-56 years of age, healthy, nonsmoking, nonhypertensive, not pregnant, with normal pulmonary function) participated. Forearm blood flow, an indicator of systemic blood flow, was measured noninvasively by using plethysmography at rest, after breathing supplemental oxygen, and after exercise. The Tibetans had more than double the forearm blood flow of low-altitude residents, resulting in greater than sea level oxygen delivery to tissues. In comparison to sea level controls, Tibetans had >10-fold-higher circulating concentrations of bioactive NO products, including plasma and red blood cell nitrate and nitroso proteins and plasma nitrite, but lower concentrations of iron nitrosyl complexes (HbFeIINO) in red blood cells. This suggests that NO production is increased and that metabolic pathways controlling formation of NO products are regulated differently among Tibetans. These findings shift attention from the traditional focus on pulmonary and hematological systems to vascular factors contributing to adaptation to high-altitude hypoxia.

Influence of venous emptying on the reactive hyperemic blood flow response

BACKGROUND

Previous research indicates that venous emptying serves as a stimulus for vasodilation in the human forearm. This suggests the importance of recognizing the potential influence of venous volume on reactive hyperemic blood flow (RHBF) following occlusion. The purpose of this study was to examine the influence of venous emptying on forearm vascular function.

METHODS

Forearm RHBF, venous capacitance and venous outflow were examined in 35 individuals (age = 22 +/- 2 years), using mercury in-Silastic strain gauge plethysmography, at rest and following five minutes of upper arm occlusion using standard procedures (CONTROL). In addition, the same measures were obtained following five minutes of upper arm occlusion preceded by two minutes of passive arm elevation (Pre-elevation).

RESULTS

Average resting arterial inflow was 2.42 +/- 1.11 ml x 100 ml(-1) x min(-1). RHBF and venous capacitance were significantly greater during Pre-elevation compared to CONTROL (RHBF; Pre-elevation: 23.76 +/- 5.95 ml x 100 ml(-1) x min(-1) vs.

CONTROL

19.33 +/- 4.50; p = 0.001), (venous capacitance; Pre-elevation: 2.74 +/- 0.89 % vs.

CONTROL

2.19 +/- 0.97, p = 0.001). Venous outflow did not differ between the two conditions.

CONCLUSION

Venous emptying prior to upper arm occlusion results in a significant greater RHBF response and venous capacitance. Recognition of the influence of venous volume on RHBF is particularly important in studies focusing on arterial inflow, and also provides further evidence for the interplay between the venous and arterial system.

Regional changes in reactive hyperemic blood flow during exercise training: time-course adaptations

Background

Few studies have examined the time-course of localized exercise training on regional blood flow in humans. The study examined the influence of handgrip exercise training on forearm reactive hyperemic blood flow and vascular resistance in apparently healthy men.

Methods

Forearm blood flow and vascular resistance were evaluated, in 17 individuals [Age: 22.6 ± 3.5], in both arms, at rest and following 5 minutes of arterial occlusion, using strain gauge plethysmography, prior to training (V1) and every week thereafter (V2-5) for 4 weeks. Handgrip exercise was performed in the non-dominant arm 5 d/wk for 20 minutes at 60% of maximum voluntary contraction, while the dominant arm served as control.

Results

Resting HR, BP, and forearm blood flow and vascular resistance were not altered with training. The trained arm handgrip strength and circumference increased by 14.5% (p = 0.014) and 1.56% (p = 0.03), respectively. ANOVA tests revealed an arms by visit interaction for the trained arm for reactive hyperemic blood flow (p = 0.02) and vascular resistance (p = 0.009). Post-hoc comparison demonstrated increased reactive hyperemic blood flow (p = 0.0013), and decreased post-occlusion vascular resistance (p = 0.05), following the 1^st week of training, with no significant changes in subsequent visits.

Conclusion

The results indicate unilateral improvements in forearm reactive hyperemic blood flow and vascular resistance following 1 week of handgrip exercise training and leveled off for the rest of the study.

Preserved flow-mediated dilation in the inactive legs of spinal cord-injured individuals

The aim of the study was to assess endothelial function, measured by flow-mediated dilation (FMD), in an inactive extremity (leg) and chronically active extremity (arm) within one subject. Eleven male spinal cord-injured (SCI) individuals and eleven male controls (C) were included. Echo Doppler measurements were performed to measure FMD responses after 10 and 5 min of arterial occlusion of the leg (superficial femoral artery, SFA) and the arm (brachial artery, BA), respectively. A nitroglycerine spray was administered to determine the endothelium independent vasodilatation in the SFA. In the SFA, relative changes in FMD were significantly enhanced in SCI compared with C (SCI: 14.1 +/- 1.3%; C: 9.2 +/- 2.3%), whereas no differences were found in the BA (SCI: 12.5 +/- 2.9%; C: 14.2 +/- 3.3%). Because the FMD response is directly proportional to the magnitude of the stimulus, the FMD response was also expressed relative to the shear rate. No differences between the groups were found for the FMD-to-shear rate ratio in the SFA (SCI:0.061 +/- 0.023%/s(-1); C: 0.049 +/- 0.024%/s(-1)), whereas the FMD-to-shear rate ratio was significantly decreased in the BA of SCI individuals (SCI: 0.037 +/- 0.01%/s(-1); C: 0.061 +/- 0.027%/s(-1)). The relative dilatory response to nitroglycerine did not differ between the groups. (SCI: 15.6 +/- 2.0%; C: 13.4 +/- 2.3%). In conclusion, our results indicate that SCI individuals have a preserved endothelial function in the inactive legs and possibly an attenuated endothelial function in the active arms compared with controls.

Measurements of vascular function using strain-gauge plethysmography: technical considerations, standardization, and physiological findings

The main purpose of the present study was to examine the relationships between measures of fitness [estimated peak oxygen consumption (V̇o2 peak) and handgrip strength] and forearm vascular function in 55 young (22.6 ± 3.5 yr) adults. In addition, the present study considered methodological and technical aspects regarding the examination of the venous system using mercury in-Silastic strain-gauge plethysmography (MSGP). Forearm venous capacitance and outflow were examined using five different [7, 14, 21, 28, and 35 mmHg < diastolic blood pressure (DBP)] venous occlusion pressures and after a 5- and 10-min period of venous occlusion. A pressure of 7 mmHg < DBP and a period of 10 min venous occlusion produced the greatest ( P < 0.05) venous capacitance and outflow, without altering arterial indexes. Reproducibility of forearm arterial and venous indexes were evaluated at rest and after 5 min of upper arm arterial occlusion at 240 mmHg on three different occasions within 10 days with the interclass correlation coefficient ranging from 0.70 and 0.94. Estimated V̇o2 peak correlated with postocclusion arterial inflow ( r = 0.54, P = 0.012) and resting venous outflow ( r = 0.56, P = 0.016). Finally, handgrip strength was associated with venous capacitance ( r = 0.57, P = 0.007) and outflow ( r = 0.67, P = 0.001). These results indicate that the examination of forearm vascular function using MSGP is reproducible. Moreover, the data show the importance of careful consideration of the selection of venous occlusion pressure and period when implementing these measures in longitudinal trials. Finally, the associations between fitness and venous measures suggest a link between venous function and exercise performance.

Effect of isometric handgrip exercise training on resting hemodynamics: a pilot study

OBJECTIVE

The purpose of the present study was to examine 1) whether Isometric Handgrip (IHG) training lowers arterial pressure at rest and 2) whether possible reductions in arterial pressure are associated with reductions in the heart rate variability (HRV).

METHODS

This case series consisted of 2 hypertensive female subjects who were trained with four 3-minute bouts of IHG) exercise at 30% maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) separated by 5-minute rest periods. Training was performed 4 times per week for 4 weeks. Subjects' resting arterial pressure were measured before and after training each day for 4 consecutive days, with HRV recorded on the third day each week.

RESULTS

In the first subject, resting diastolic pressure decreased from 120 to 90 mmHg and systolic arterial pressure decreased from 160 to 140 mmHg, whereas heart rate increased from 52 to 55 beats/min, and HRV did not change following training. The decrease in blood pressure was seen after 3 weeks of handgrip exercise. In the second subject, no trend of blood pressure reduction was seen but the systolic arterial pressure decreased before and after the handgrip exercise at 10 training days out of the 17 possible days. In the other 7 days, 6 days showed no blood pressure changes after handgrip exercise. The HRV in the LF, HF, VLF ranges did not change with training.

DISCUSSION

Handgrip exercise moderately reduced blood pressure in the 2 female hypertensive subjects. The reduction of blood pressure and response to HRV seemed to relate to subject's history of using hypertensive medication.

CONCLUSION

IHG training might be an effective nonpharmacological intervention in lowering arterial pressure. Further study is needed.

Time course of improved flow-mediated dilation after short-term exercise training

PURPOSE

The purpose was to determine the influence of a unilateral localized short-term handgrip training protocol on brachial artery flow-mediated dilation (BAFMD) and to examine the time course of such changes.

METHODS

Fourteen healthy males (age: 26 +/- 5.7 yr) underwent high-resolution ultrasonographic brachial artery assessments before (V1), during (V2-V7), and at the end of 4 wk (V8) of 60% maximal voluntary contraction handgrip training (20 min.d-1, 5 d.wk-1) of the nondominant arm.

RESULTS

Before training resting diameters were similar between the trained (nondominant) and untrained (dominant) arms. A 2 (trained and untrained arms) x 2 (V1 and V8) repeated measure ANOVA revealed a significant main (P = 0.02 and P = 0.03) and interaction effect (P = 0.05 and P = 0.01) for the percent and absolute change in BAFMD. BAFMD improved 62% and 70%, respectively from V1 to V8, for the percent and absolute change. Subsequent linear orthogonal polynomial contrasts indicate both the percent and absolute change in BAFMD were statistically different at V2 (end of week 1 and 4 training days) from V1. These unilateral changes were not accompanied by changes in resting artery diameter, hemodynamic measures, hematological markers, and indices of heart rate variability suggesting the change may be locally mediated.

CONCLUSIONS

This study shows a localized short-term exercise-training program resulted in significant improvements in BAFMD in the trained arm compared with the untrained arm and suggests this occurred after only 4 d of training.
