Effects of anharmonicity and electronic coupling on photoinduced electron transfer in mixed valence compounds

Quantum Dynamical Simulation of Electron-Transfer Reactions in an Anharmonic Environment

The multilayer multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree theory is applied to study the quantum dynamics of ultrafast electron-transfer reactions in a condensed-phase environment with anharmonic potential functions. Effects of anharmonicity for both the nuclear degrees of freedom of the environment and the intramolecular vibrational degrees of freedom are investigated. Whereas the former can in principle be mapped to a fictitious harmonic bath, the latter cannot be represented in this way and, thus, go beyond the commonly employed linear response approximation. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate these findings.

Vibrational anharmonicity effects in electronic tunneling through molecular bridges

Effects of anharmonic bridge vibrations on electronic tunneling in donor-bridge-acceptor complexes are studied using a model of anharmonic bridge vibration coupled nonlinearly to an electronic degree of freedom. An anharmonicity parameter is introduced, enabling to reproduce the standard harmonic model with linear coupling as a limiting case. The frequency of electronic tunneling oscillations between the donor and acceptor sites is shown to be sensitive to the nuclear anharmonicity, where stretching and compression modes have an opposite effect on the electronic frequency. This phenomenon, that cannot be accounted for within the harmonic approximation, is analyzed and explained.

Electroreduction of a Series of Alkylcobalamins: Mechanism of Stepwise Reductive Cleavage of the Co−C Bond

The electrochemical (EC) reduction mechanism of methylcobalamin (Me-Cbl) in a mixed DMF/MeOH solvent in 0.2 M tetrabutylammonium fluoroborate electrolyte was studied as a function of temperature and solvent ratio vs a nonaqueous Ag/AgCl/Cl(-) reference electrode. Double-potential-step chronoamperometry allowed the rate constant of the subsequent homogeneous reaction to be measured over the temperature range from 0 to -80 degrees C in 40:60 and 50:50 DMF:MeOH ratios. Activation enthalpies are 5.8 +/- 0.5 and 7.6 +/- 0.3 kcal/mol in the 40:60 and 50:50 mixtures of DMF/MeOH, respectively. Digital simulation and curve-fitting for an EC mechanism using a predetermined homogeneous rate constant of 5.5 x 10(3) s(-1) give E degrees' = -1.466 V, k degrees = 0.016 cm/s, and alpha = 0.77 at 20 degrees C for a quasi-reversible electrode process. Digital simulation of the results of Lexa and Savéant (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1978, 100, 3220-3222) shows that the mechanism is a series of stepwise homogeneous equilibrium processes with an irreversible step following the initial electron transfer (ET) and allows estimation of the equilibrium and rate constants of these reactions. An electron coupling matrix element of H(kA) = (4.7 +/- 1.1) x 10(-4) eV ( approximately 46 J/mol) is calculated for the nonadiabatic ET step for reduction to the radical anion. A reversible bond dissociation enthalpy for homolytic cleavage of Me-Cbl is calculated as 31 +/- 2 kcal/mol. The voltammetry of the ethyl-, n-propyl-, n-butyl-, isobutyl-, and adenosyl-substituted cobalamin was studied, and estimated reversible redox potentials were correlated with Co-C bond distances as determined by DFT (B3LYP/ LANL2DZ) calculations.

Dissipative dynamics of a system passing through a conical intersection: Ultrafast pump-probe observables

The dynamics of a system incorporating a conical intersection, in the presence of a dissipative environment, is studied with the purpose of identifying observable ultrafast spectroscopic signatures. A model system consisting of two vibronically coupled electronic states with two nuclear degrees of freedom is constructed. Dissipation is treated by two different methods, Lindblad semigroup formalism and the surrogate Hamiltonian approach. Pump-probe experimental expectation values such as transient emission and transient absorption are calculated and compared to the adiabatic and diabatic population transfer. The ultrafast population transfer reflecting the conical intersection is not mirrored in transient absorption measurements such as the recovery of the bleach. Emission from the excited state can be suppressed on the ultrafast time scale, but the existence of a conical intersection is only one of the possible mechanisms that can provide ultrafast damping of emission.

Transient Phenomena in Time- and Frequency-Gated Spontaneous Emission

The effect of overlapping pump and gate pulses on time- and frequency-gated spontaneous emission spectra is explored for a model of material dynamics that accounts for strong nonadiabatic and electron-vibrational coupling effects, vibrational relaxation, and optical dephasing, thus representing characteristic features of photoinduced excited-state dynamics in large molecules in the gas phase or in condensed phases. The behaviors of the sequential, coherent, and doorway-window contributions to the spontaneous emission spectrum are studied separately. The interrelation between the sequential and coherent contributions is demonstrated to be sensitive to the carrier frequencies of the pump and gate pulses and also to the optical dephasing rate, opening the possibility of an experimental determination of the latter. The coherent contribution is shown to dominate the spectrum at specific emission frequencies.

Time- and frequency-resolved fluorescence spectra of nonadiabatic dissipative systems: What photons can tell us

The monitoring of the excited-state dynamics by time- and frequency-resolved spontaneous emission spectroscopy has been studied in detail for a model exhibiting an excited-state curve crossing. The model represents characteristic aspects of the photoinduced ultrafast dynamics in large molecules in the gas or condensed phases and accounts for strong nonadiabatic and electron-vibrational coupling effects, as well as for vibrational relaxation and optical dephasing. A comprehensive overview of the dependence of spontaneous emission spectra on the characteristics of the excitation and detection processes (such as carrier frequencies, pump/gate pulse durations, as well as optical dephasing) is presented. A systematic comparison of ideal spectra, which provide simultaneously perfect time and frequency resolution and thus contain maximal information on the system dynamics, with actually measurable time- and frequency-gated spectra has been carried out. The calculations of real time- and frequency-gated spectra demonstrate that complementary information on the excited-state dynamics can be extracted when the duration of the gate pulse is varied.
