Abstract
The ground-state electronic/geometrical structures of the three classical isomers Cs(15)-C84, C2(13)-C84, and C2(8)-C84 as well as the corresponding embedded derivatives U@Cs(15)-C84, YCN@C2(13)-C84, and U@C2(8)-C84 have been calculated at the density functional theory (DFT) level. Then, the isomers of C84 were theoretically identified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near X-ray absorption fine-structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS). The spectral components of total spectra for carbon atoms in various local environments have been investigated. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopies of U@Cs(15)-C84, YCN@C2(13)-C84, and U@C2(8)-C84 have also been performed utilizing time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations. The UV-vis spectra are in good agreement with the experimental results. These spectra provide an effective method for the identification of isomers. The results of this study can offer useful data for further experimental and theoretical studies using X-ray and UV-vis spectroscopy methods on freshly synthesized fullerene isomers and their derivatives.

An Ultimate Investigation on the Adsorption of Amantadine on Pristine and Decorated Fullerenes C59X (X=Si, Ge, B, Al, Ga, N, P, and As): A DFT, NBO, and QTAIM Study. Abstract
In this investigation, the feasibility of detecting the amantadine (AMD) molecule onto the outer surface of pristine fullerene (C[Formula: see text]), as well as C[Formula: see text]X ([Formula: see text], Ge, B, Al, Ga, N, P, and As) decorated structures, was carefully evaluated. For achieving this goal, a density functional theory level of study using the HSEH1PBE functional together with a 6-311G(d) basis set has been used. Subsequently, the B3LYP-D3, wB97XD and M062X functionals with a 6-311G(d) basis set were also employed to consider the single point energies. Natural bond orbital (NBO) and the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM) were implemented using the B3LYP-D3/6-311G(d) method and the results were compatible with the electronic properties. In this regard, the total density of states (TDOSs), the Wiberg bond index (WBI), natural charge, natural electron configuration, donor–acceptor NBO interactions, and the second-order perturbation energies are performed to explore the nature of the intermolecular interactions. All of the energy calculations and population analyses denote that by adsorbing of the AMD molecule onto the surface of the considered nanostructures, the intermolecular interactions are of the type of strong physical adsorption. Among the doped fullerenes, Ge-doped structure has very high adsorption energy compared to other elements. Generally, it was revealed that the sensitivity of the adsorption will be increased when the AMD molecule interacts with the decorated fullerenes and decrease the HOMO–LUMO band gap; therefore, the change of electronic properties can be used to design suitable nanocarrier.

Abstract
Here, we perform theoretical investigation using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and time-dependent density functional tight binding (TD-DFTB) for the electronic structure and optical properties of silver nanorods. TD-DFTB generally performs well for the accurate description of optical properties with respect to the size and type of dimer assembly of silver nanorods compared to TD-DFT. However, the energies and intensities of the longitudinal and transverse peaks of the nanorods are somewhat underestimated with TD-DFTB compared to the values calculated at the TD-DFT level. By exploiting the computational efficiency of TD-DFTB, we also extend our investigation to longer nanorods and their dimers containing up to ∼2000 atoms. Our results show that the coupling between nanorods and the resulting optical properties of the dimer assemblies are quite dependent on the length of the monomers. In all cases, the energy shifts in dimers as a function of the gap distance deviate significantly from the dipole-dipole interaction model. Moreover, a comparison of the best-fit curves for the dependence of the fractional shifts (Δλ/λ0) on nanorod length indicates that the parameters of the plasmon ruler equation depend on the length of the nanorods and the type of the assembly rather than approaching a universal value. These insights are enabled by the computational efficiency of TD-DFTB and its ability to treat quantum mechanical effects in large nanorod dimer systems.

Abstract
X-ray photoelectron (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectra, as well as the ground-state electronic/geometrical structures of two important isomers of the elusive C72 fullerene family (C2v- and D6d-symmetry, respectively) and the corresponding chlorinated derivative C72Cl4, which are newly captured in the experiment, have been simulated at the density functional theory (DFT) level. Effective changes in the electronic structure and simulated X-ray spectra have been observed after chlorination. Both spectra show strong isomer dependence, therefore the "fingerprints" in the X-ray spectra offer a useful method for isomer identification of the above-mentioned fullerenes. The ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) absorption spectroscopy of C72Cl4 has also been performed by means of time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations. The simulated UV-vis spectrum is in good agreement with the experimental results. The results of this work can provide valuable information for further experimental and theoretical studies on newly synthesized fullerene isomers and their derivatives by means of X-ray and UV-vis spectroscopy techniques.

Abstract
Ellipsometric measurements in a wide spectral range (from 0.05 to 6.5 eV) have been carried out on the organic semiconducting polymer, poly[2-methoxy-5-(3',7'-dimethyloctyloxy)-1,4-phenylene-vinylene] (MDMO-PPV), in both undoped and doped states. The real and imaginary parts of the dielectric function and the refractive index are determined accurately, provided that the layer thickness is measured independently. After doping, the optical properties show the presence of new peaks, which could be well-resolved by spectroscopic ellipsometry. Also for the doped material, the complex refractive index, with respect to the dielectric function, has been determined. The broadening of the optical transitions is due to the delocalization of polarons at higher doping level. The detailed information about the dielectric function as well as refractive index function obtained by spectroscopic ellipsometry allows not only qualitative but also quantitative description of the optical properties of the undoped/doped polymer. For the direct characterization of the optical properties of MDMO-PPV, ellipsometry turns out to be advantageous compared to conventional reflection and transmission measurements.

Abstract
We report the novel photoresponse of nanodevices made from azafullerene (C59N)-encapsulated single-walled carbon nanotubes (C59N@SWNTs), so called peapods. The photoconducting properties of a C59N@SWNT are measured over a temperature range of 10 to 300 K under a field-effect transistor configuration. It is found that the photosensitivity of C59N@SWNTs depends very sensitively on the temperature, making them an attractive candidate as a component of nanothermometers covering a wide temperature range. Our results indicate that it is possible to read the temperature by monitoring the optoelectronics signal of C59N@SWNTs. In particular, sensing low temperatures would become more convenient and easy by giving a simple light pulse.

Abstract
We have performed both semiempirical as well as ab initio density functional theory calculations in order to investigate the structural stability of highly hydroxylated C60(OH)32 fullerenes, so-called fullerenols. Interestingly, we have found that low-energy atomic configurations are obtained when the OH groups are covering the C60 in the form of small hydroxyl islands. The previous formation of OH molecular domains on the carbon surface, stabilized by hydrogen bonds between neighboring OH groups, defines the existence of C60(OH)32 fullerene structures with some elongated C-C bonds, closed electronic shells, and large highest occupied-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gaps, with the latter two being well-known indicators of high chemical stability in these kind of carbon compounds. The calculated optical absorption spectra show that the location of the first single dipole-allowed excitation strongly depends on the precise distribution of the OH groups on the surface, a result that, combined with optical spectroscopy experiments, might provide an efficient way to identify the structure of these kinds of fullerene derivatives. We found that the presence of a few coadsorbed oxygen species on the fullerene surface leads in general to the existence of C60(OH)32O(x) (x = 1-4) compounds in which some of the C-C bonds just below the O impurities are replaced by C-O-C bridge bonds, leading to the formation of stable carbon-opened structures in agreement with the recent experimental work of Xing et al. (J. Phys. Chem. B 2004, 108, 11473). Actually, a more dramatic cage destruction is obtained when considering multiply charged C60(OH)32O(x)(+/-m) (m = 2, 4, 6) species (that can exist in both gas-phase and aqueous environments), where now sizable holes made of 9- and 10-membered rings can exist in the carbon network. We believe that our results are important if the controlled opening of carbon cages is needed and it should be taken into account also in several technological applications where the permanent encapsulation of atomic or molecular species in these types of fullerene derivatives is required.

Abstract
An analytical formulation for the geometrical derivatives of excitation energies within the time-dependent density-functional tight-binding (TD-DFTB) method is presented. The derivation is based on the auxiliary functional approach proposed in [Furche and Ahlrichs, J Chem Phys 2002, 117, 7433]. To validate the quality of the potential energy surfaces provided by the method, adiabatic excitation energies, excited state geometries, and harmonic vibrational frequencies were calculated for a test set of molecules in excited states of different symmetry and multiplicity. According to the results, the TD-DFTB scheme surpasses the performance of configuration interaction singles and the random phase approximation but has a lower quality than ab initio time-dependent density-functional theory. As a consequence of the special form of the approximations made in TD-DFTB, the scaling exponent of the method can be reduced to three, similar to the ground state. The low scaling prefactor and the satisfactory accuracy of the method makes TD-DFTB especially suitable for molecular dynamics simulations of dozens of atoms as well as for the computation of luminescence spectra of systems containing hundreds of atoms.

Abstract
The excitation spectra and the structural properties of highly hydroxylated C(60)(OH)(x) fullerenes (so-called fullerenols) are analyzed by comparing optical absorption experiments on dilute fullerenol-water solutions with semiempirical and density functional theory electronic structure calculations. The optical spectrum of fullerenol molecules with 24-28 OH attached to the carbon surface is characterized by the existence of broad bands with reduced intensities near the ultraviolet region (below approximately 500 nm) together with a complete absence of optical transitions in the visible part of the spectra, contrasting with the intense absorption observed in C(60) solutions. Our theoretical calculations of the absorption spectra, performed within the framework of the semiempirical Zerner intermediate neglect of diatomic differential overlap method [Reviews in Computational Chemistry II, edited by K. B. Lipkowitz and D. B. Boyd (VCH, Weinheim, 1991), Chap. 8, pp. 313-316] for various gas-phase-like C(60)(OH)(26) isomers, reveal that the excitation spectra of fullerenol molecules strongly depend on the degree of surface functionalization, the precise distribution of the OH groups on the carbon structure, and the presence of impurities in the samples. Interestingly, we have surprisingly found that low energy atomic configurations are obtained when the OH groups segregate on the C(60) surface forming molecular domains of different sizes. This patchy behavior for the hydroxyl molecules on the carbon surface leads in general to the formation of fullerene compounds with closed electronic shells, large highest occupied molecular orbital-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital energy gaps, and existence of an excitation spectrum that accounts for the main qualitative features observed in the experimental data.

Abstract
Stimulated by the recent preparation and characterization of the first [50]fullerene derivative, decachlorofullerene[50] (Science 2004, 304, 699), we have performed a systematic density functional study on the electronic and spectroscopic properties of C(50), its anions and derivatives such as C(50)Cl(10) and C(50)Cl(12). The ground state of C(50) has D(3) symmetry with a spheroid shape, and is highly aromatic; the best D(5h)C(50) singlet is nonaromatic. Both D(3)() and D(5h)() isomers of C(50) have high electron affinities and can be reduced easily. Due to the unstable fused pentagon structural features, C(50) is chemically labile and subject to addition reactions such as chlorination, dimerization and polymerization. The equatorial pentagon-pentagon fusions of D(5h)C(50) are active sites for chemical reactions; hence, D(5h)C(50) may behave as a multivalent group. The computed IR, Raman, (13)C NMR and UV-vis spectra of the D(5h)C(50)Cl(10) molecule agree well with the experimental data. Finally, D(5h)C(50)Cl(10) is predicted to have a high electron affinity and, hence, might serve as an electron-acceptor in photonic/photovoltaic applications. The geometry and (13)C NMR chemical shifts of C(50)Cl(12) were computed to assist further isolation experiments.

Abstract
C50Cl10 [S. Y. Xie et al., Science 304, 699 (2004)] has been synthesized in large quantities enabling the capture of the labile fullerene C50. In this Communication, we report ab initio calculations on the optical excitation and absorption spectra of C50Cl10. We successfully explain and assign the measured UV-visible absorption spectrum of C50Cl10. The first singlet excitation for C50Cl10 is optically forbidden, and its optical absorption gap is redshifted by 0.6 eV (110 nm) relative to that of C60. We demonstrate that passivating C50 with 10 hydrogen atoms and replacing one Cl in C50Cl10 by one methoxy group lead to 100 nm blueshift and 90 nm redshift of the optical gap predicted for C50Cl10, respectively, suggesting C50 derivatives are suitable for tunable optical applications.
