Determining the adsorptive and catalytic properties of strained metal surfaces using adsorption-induced stress

Structure-driven tuning of catalytic properties of core-shell nanostructures

The annual increase in demand for renewable energy is driving the development of catalysis-based technologies that generate, store and convert clean energy by splitting and forming chemical bonds. Thanks to efforts over the last two decades, great progress has been made in the use of core-shell nanostructures to improve the performance of metallic catalysts. The successful preparation and application of a large number of bimetallic core-shell nanocrystals demonstrates the wide range of possibilities they offer and suggests further advances in this field. Here, we have reviewed recent advances in the synthesis and study of core-shell nanostructures that are promising for catalysis. Particular attention has been paid to the structural tuning of the catalytic properties of core-shell nanostructures and to theoretical methods capable of describing their catalytic properties in order to efficiently search for new catalysts with desired properties. We have also identified the most promising areas of research in this field, in terms of experimental and theoretical studies, and in terms of promising materials to be studied.

Efficient catalyst screening using graph neural networks to predict strain effects on adsorption energy

Small-molecule adsorption energies correlate with energy barriers of catalyzed intermediate reaction steps, determining the dominant microkinetic mechanism. Straining the catalyst can alter adsorption energies and break scaling relationships that inhibit reaction engineering, but identifying desirable strain patterns using density functional theory is intractable because of the high-dimensional search space. We train a graph neural network to predict the adsorption energy response of a catalyst/adsorbate system under a proposed surface strain pattern. The training data are generated by randomly straining and relaxing Cu-based binary alloy catalyst complexes taken from the Open Catalyst Project. The trained model successfully predicts the adsorption energy response for 85% of strains in unseen test data, outperforming ensemble linear baselines. Using ammonia synthesis as an example, we identify Cu-S alloy catalysts as promising candidates for strain engineering. Our approach can locate strain patterns that break adsorption energy scaling relations to improve catalyst performance.

Rationalization of Nonlinear Adsorption Energy-Strain Relations and Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi and Transition State Scaling Relationships under Strain

Scaling relations play a vital role in high-throughput screening of catalytic materials, and more and more attention is being paid to strain-based regulation of catalytic performance. Here we investigated the variation of several energetics, including adsorption energies in the initial state, transition state, and final state, reaction energies, and energy barriers with strain, by studying CO, BH, NH, CH, and NO adsorption and dissociation on M(111) (M = Cu, Ag, Ni, Pd, or Pt) surfaces. We show that energy barriers, reaction energies, and adsorption energies can vary either linearly or nonlinearly (quadratically) with strain. Systems with stronger adsorbate-substrate interaction and weaker atom-atom interaction in substrates are more likely to exhibit nonlinear relations. The well-known Brønsted-Evans-Polanyi relationships and transition state scaling relationships under strain were also examined, and both of them can be nonlinear under strain, in principle. The observed nonlinear relationships were satisfactorily rationalized with the equations derived from Mechanics of Solids.

Climbing with support: scaling the volcano relationship through support–electrocatalyst interactions in electrodeposited RuO2 for the oxygen evolution reaction

The interfacial charge transfer and support-induced electrocatalyst faceting in thin catalysts enable ‘climbing up’ the volcano map for OER electrocatalysts. The conductivity of the support determines the OER activity of thick catalysts.

Tuning Surface Properties of Low Dimensional Materials via Strain Engineering

The promising and versatile applications of low dimensional materials are largely due to their surface properties, which along with their underlying electronic structures have been well studied. However, these materials may not be directly useful for applications requiring properties other than their natal ones. In recent years, strain has been shown to be an additionally useful handle to tune the physical and chemical properties of materials by changing their geometric and electronic structures. The strategies for producing strain are summarized. Then, the electronic structure of quasi-two dimensional layered non-metallic materials (e.g., graphene, MX2, BP, Ge nanosheets) under strain are discussed. Later, the strain effects on catalytic properties of metal-catalyst loaded with strain are focused on. Both experimental and computational perspectives for dealing with strained systems are covered. Finally, an outlook on engineering surface properties utilizing strain is provided.

Tailoring Kinetics on a Topological Insulator Surface by Defect-Induced Strain: Pb Mobility on Bi2Te3

Heteroepitaxial structures based on Bi2Te3-type topological insulators (TIs) exhibit exotic quantum phenomena. For optimal characterization of these phenomena, it is desirable to control the interface structure during film growth on such TIs. In this process, adatom mobility is a key factor. We demonstrate that Pb mobility on the Bi2Te3(111) surface can be modified by the engineering local strain, ε, which is induced around the point-like defects intrinsically forming in the Bi2Te3(111) thin film grown on a Si(111)-7 × 7 substrate. Scanning tunneling microscopy observations of Pb adatom and cluster distributions and first-principles density functional theory (DFT) analyses of the adsorption energy and diffusion barrier Ed of Pb adatom on Bi2Te3(111) surface show a significant influence of ε. Surprisingly, Ed reveals a cusp-like dependence on ε due to a bifurcation in the position of the stable adsorption site at the critical tensile strain εc ≈ 0.8%. This constitutes a very different strain-dependence of diffusivity from all previous studies focusing on conventional metal or semiconductor surfaces. Kinetic Monte Carlo simulations of Pb deposition, diffusion, and irreversible aggregation incorporating the DFT results reveal adatom and cluster distributions compatible with our experimental observations.

Structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)iron(III) molecules and their magnetic coupling with ferromagnetic surface: first-principles study

Using first-principles calculations, we have systematically investigated the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of facial (fac-) and meridional (mer-) tris(8-hydroxyquinoline)iron(III) (Feq3) molecules and their interaction with ferromagnetic substrate. Our calculation results show that for the isolated Feq3, mer-Feq3 is more stable than the fac-Feq3; both Feq3 isomers have a high spin-state of 5 μB as the ground state when an on-site Hubbard-U term is included to treat the highly localized Fe 3d electrons; while the standard DFT calculations produce a low spin-state of 1 μB for mer-Feq3. These magnetic behaviors can be understood by the octahedral ligand field splitting theory. Furthermore, we found that fac-Feq3 has a stronger bonding to the Co surface than mer-Feq3 and an anti-ferromagnetic coupling was discovered between Fe and Co substrate, originating from the superexchange coupling between Fe and Co mediated by the interface oxygen and nitrogen atoms. These findings suggest that Feq3 molecular films may serve as a promising spin-filter material in spintronic devices.

Quantum manifestations of graphene edge stress and edge instability: a first-principles study

We have performed first-principles calculations of graphene edge stresses, which display two interesting quantum manifestations absent from the classical interpretation: the armchair edge stress oscillates with a nanoribbon width, and the zigzag edge stress is noticeably reduced by spin polarization. Such quantum stress effects in turn manifest in mechanical edge twisting and warping instability, showing features not captured by empirical potentials or continuum theory. Edge adsorption of H and Stone-Wales reconstruction are shown to provide alternative mechanisms in relieving the edge compression and hence to stabilize the planar edge structure.

Nature of reactive O2 and slow CO2 evolution kinetics in CO oxidation by TiO2 supported Au cluster

Recent experiments on CO oxidation reaction using seven-atom Au clusters deposited on TiO2 surface correlate CO2 formation with oxygen associated with Au clusters. We perform first principles calculations using a seven-atom Au cluster supported on a reduced TiO2 surface to explore potential candidates for the form of reactive oxygen. These calculations suggest a thermodynamically favorable path for O2 diffusion along the surface Ti row, resulting in its dissociated state bound to Au cluster and TiO2 surface. CO can approach along the same path and react with the O2 so dissociated to form CO2. The origin of the slow kinetic evolution of products observed in experiments is also investigated and is attributed to the strong binding of CO2 simultaneously to the Au cluster and the surface.

Surface mobility difference between Si and Ge and its effect on growth of SiGe alloy films and islands

Based on first-principles calculations of surface diffusion barriers, we show that on a compressive Ge(001) surface the diffusivity of Ge is 10(2)-10(3) times higher than that of Si in the temperature range of 300 to 900 K, while on a tensile surface, the two diffusivities are comparable. Consequently, the growth of a compressive SiGe film is rather different from that of a tensile film. The diffusion disparity between Si and Ge is also greatly enhanced on the strained Ge islands compared to that on the Ge wetting layer on Si(001), explaining the experimental observation of Si enrichment in the wetting layer relative to that in the islands.

Critical epinucleation on reconstructured surfaces and first-principle calculation of homonucleation on Si(100)

We introduce the concept of "critical epinucleation to distinguish nucleation on surfaces with and without reconstruction. On a reconstructed surface, the critical classical nucleus is stable against dissociation, but may not yet break the underlying surface reconstruction. Consequently, there must exist a "critical epinucleus" that is not only stable but also has established the epiconfiguration by unreconstructing the underlying substrate. We illustrate this concept by first-principle calculation of homonucleation on reconstructed Si(001) surface where the critical epinucleus consists of six adatoms.
