Properties of the H-bond network for two-dimensional lattice water model

Why do antifreeze proteins require a solenoid?

Proteins whose presence prevents water from freezing in living organisms at temperatures below 0 °C are referred to as antifreeze proteins. This group includes molecules of varying size (from 30 to over 300 aa) and variable secondary/supersecondary conformation. Some of these proteins also contain peculiar structural motifs called solenoids. We have applied the fuzzy oil drop model in the analysis of four categories of antifreeze proteins: 1 - very small proteins, i.e. helical peptides (below 40 aa); 2 - small globular proteins (40-100 aa); 3 - large globular proteins (>100 aa) and 4 - proteins containing solenoids. The FOD model suggests a mechanism by which antifreeze proteins prevent freezing. In accordance with this theory, the presence of the protein itself produces an ordering of water molecules which counteracts the formation of ice crystals. This conclusion is supported by analysis of the ordering of hydrophobic and hydrophilic residues in antifreeze proteins, revealing significant variability - from perfect adherence to the fuzzy oil drop model through structures which lack a clearly defined hydrophobic core, all the way to linear arrangement of alternating local minima and maxima propagating along the principal axis of the solenoid (much like in amyloids). The presented model - alternative with respect to the ice docking model - explains the antifreeze properties of compounds such as saccharides and fatty acids. The fuzzy oil drop model also enables differentiation between amyloids and antifreeze proteins.

Ice polyamorphism in the minimal Mercedes-Benz model of water

We investigate ice polyamorphism in the context of the two-dimensional Mercedes-Benz model of water. We find a first-order phase transition between a crystalline phase and a high-density amorphous phase. Furthermore, we find a reversible transformation between two amorphous structures of high and low density; however, we find this to be a continuous and not an abrupt transition, as the low-density amorphous phase does not show structural stability. We discuss the origin of this behavior and its implications with regard to the minimal generic modeling of polyamorphism.

Thermodynamics of two lattice ice models in three dimensions

In a recent paper we introduced two Potts-like models in three dimensions, which share the following properties: (A) One of the ice rules is always fulfilled (in particular also at infinite temperature, beta=0 ). (B) Both ice rules hold for ground-state configurations. This allowed for an efficient calculation of the residual entropy of ice I (ordinary ice) by means of multicanonical simulations. Here we present the thermodynamics of these models in more details. Despite their similarities with Potts models, no sign of a disorder-order phase transition is found.

Role of orientation disorder in the formation of fragility of glassy water and glycerol-like liquids

The role of H bonds in the formation of the fragility and dielectric properties of highly viscous liquids is investigated. The heuristic supposition about the proportionality between the logarithm of the shear viscosity and oscillatory contributions to the mean-square displacement of a molecule is presented. Concrete calculations are carried out for the H-bond subsystem of the two-dimensional model lattice water. The conjecture on the interrelation between the phase transition in the subsystem of H bonds and the glassification point is formulated. It is shown that (i) the glassification temperature is proportional to the H-bonding energy and (ii) the fragilities of glycerol-like liquids differ from each other as a consequence of distinct interaction energies between H bonds. The existence of a close connection between the fragility parameter and dielectric permittivity is established.

Macro- and microdefinitions of fragility of hydrogen-bonded glass-forming liquids

In the present paper, the nature of the fragility of liquids with a developed H-bond network is investigated. It is shown that the effective activation energy of the shear viscosity eta and the fragility parameter defined as m=d log eta/d(Tg/T)|t=t+g are immediately connected with the average number nH(T) of the H-bond per molecule. The consistency of the macroscopic (m) and the microscopic [M=d(u(2)(0)/<u(-->2)>loc)/d(Tg/T)|T=T+8, where <u-->2>loc=<u-->2>anharm - <u-->2>harm] definitions of the fragility is established.
