Experimental vibrational spectra of gas-phase tantalum cluster cations

Cryo IR spectroscopy and cryo kinetics of dinitrogen activation and cleavage by small tantalum cluster cations

We investigate small tantalum clusters Tan+, n = 2-4, for their capability to cleave N2 adsorption spontaneously. We utilize infrared photon dissociation (IR-PD) spectroscopy of isolated and size selected clusters under cryogenic conditions within a buffer gas filled ion trap, and we augment our experiments by quantum chemical simulations (at DFT level). All Tan+ clusters, n = 2-4, seem to cleave N2 efficiently. We confirm and extend a previous study under ambient conditions on Ta2+ cluster [Geng et al., Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. U. S. A. 115, 11680-11687 (2018)]. Our cryo studies and the concomitant DFT simulations of the tantalum trimer Ta3+ suggest cleavage of the first and activation of the second and third N2 molecule across surmountable barriers and along much-involved multidimensional reaction paths. We unravel the underlying reaction processes and the intermediates involved. The study of the N2 adsorbate complexes of Ta4+ presented here extends our earlier study and previously published spectra from (4,m), m = 1-5 [Fries et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 23(19), 11345-11354 (2021)], up to m = 12. We confirm the priory published double activation and nitride formation, succeeded by single side-on N2 coordination. Significant red shifts of IR-PD bands from these side-on coordinated μ2-κN:κN,N N2 ligands correlate with the degree of tilting towards the second coordinating Ta center. All subsequently attaching N2 adsorbates onto Ta4+ coordinate in an end-on fashion, and we find clear evidence for co-existence of end-on coordination isomers. The study of stepwise N2 adsorption revealed adsorption limits m(max) of [Tan(N2)m]+ which increase with n, and kinetic fits revealed significant N2 desorption rates upon higher N2 loads. The enhanced absolute rate constants of the very first adsorbate steps kabs(n,0) of the small Ta3+ and Ta4+ clusters independently suggest dissociative N2 adsorption and likely N2 cleavage into Ta nitrides.

An Open-Shell Superatom Cluster Ta10- with Enhanced Stability by United d-d π Bonds and d-Orbital Superatomic States

We carried out a comprehensive study on the gas-phase reactions of Ta_n^- (n = 5-27) with nitrogen using a customized reflection time-of-flight mass spectrometer coupled with a velocity map imaging apparatus (Re-TOFMS-VMI). Among the studied tantalum clusters, Ta₁₀^- exhibits prominent mass abundance indicative of its unique inertness. DFT calculation results revealed a D_4d bipyramidal prolate structure of the most stable Ta₁₀^-, which was verified by photoelectron spectroscopy experiments. The calculations also unveiled that Ta₁₀^- has the largest HOMO-LUMO gap and second-order difference of binding energy among the studied clusters. This is associated with its well-organized superatomic orbitals, which consist of both 6s and 5d orbitals of tantalum atoms, allowing for splitting of superatomic 1D and 2P orbitals and an enlarged gap between the singly occupied molecular orbital (SOMO) and unoccupied β counterpart, which brings forth stabilization energy pertaining to Jahn-Teller distortion. Also, the SOMO exhibits a united d-d π orbital pattern that embraces the central Ta₈^- moiety.

CO2-Activation by size-selected tantalum cluster cations (Ta1-16+): thermalization governing reaction selectivity

The reactions of tantalum cluster cations of different sizes toward carbon dioxide are studied in an ion trap under multi-collisional conditions. For all sizes studied, consecutive reactions with several CO₂ molecules are observed. This reveals two different pathways, namely oxide formation and the pickup of an entire molecule. Supported by calculations of the thermochemistry of Ta_nO⁺ formation upon reaction with CO₂, changes in the branching ratios at a particular cluster size are related to heat effects due to the vibrational heat capacity of the clusters and the exothermicity of the reaction.

Observation and mechanism of cryo N2 cleavage by a tantalum cluster

We explore the cryogenic kinetics of N2 adsorption to Ta4+ and the infrared signatures of [Ta4(N2)m]+ complexes, m = 1-5. This is accomplished by N2 exposure of isolated ions within a cryogenic ion trap. We find stepwise addition of numerous N2 molecules to the Ta4+ cluster. Interestingly, the infrared signatures of the [Ta4(N2)1]+ and [Ta4(N2)2]+ products are special: there are no NN stretching bands. This is consistent with cleavage of the first two adsorbed dinitrogen molecules. DFT calculations reveal intermediates and barriers along reaction paths of N2 cleavage in support of these experimental findings. We indicate the identified multidimensional path of N2 cleavage as an across edge-above surface (AEAS) mechanism: initially end-on coordinated N2 bends towards a neighboring Ta-atom which yields a second intermediate, with a μ2 bonded N2 across an edge of the Ta4+ tetrahedron core. Further rearrangement above a Ta-Ta-Ta surface of the Ta4+ tetrahedron results in a μ3 bonded N2 ligand. This intermediate relaxes swiftly by ultimate NN cleavage unfolding into the final dinitrido motif. Submerged activation barriers below the entrance channel confirm spontaneous cleavage of the first two dinitrogen molecules (-59 and -33 kJ mol-1, respectively), while cleavage of the third N2 ligand is kinetically hindered (+55 kJ mol-1). We recognize that substoichiometric N2 exposure allows for spontaneous activation by Ta4+, while higher N2 exposure causes self-poisoning.

Structures of Small Tantalum Cluster Anions: Experiment and Theory

We present a study of the structural evolution of tantalum cluster anions Ta_n^-, 6 ≤ n ≤ 13 using a combination of trapped ion electron diffraction (TIED) experiments with a variety of electronic structure methods. A genetic algorithm has been employed to establish a set of likely structures for each cluster, their geometries and energetics have been studied by density functional theory (DFT), random phase approximation, and two-component (2C) DFT methods, which include spin-orbit coupling. We find octahedral structures for Ta₆^- and Ta₈^- as well as structures based on the pentagonal bipyramid (Ta₇^- and Ta₉^-). Ta₁₀^--Ta₁₂^- are defective icosahedral structures and Ta₁₃^- is a distorted icosahedron. For most clusters, we find a good agreement between the theoretically predicted ground-state structures, especially those determined by the 2C method and the TIED results.

Carbide Dihydrides: Carbonaceous Species Identified in Ta4 + -Mediated Methane Dehydrogenation

The products of methane dehydrogenation by gas‐phase Ta₄⁺ clusters are structurally characterized using infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy in conjunction with quantum chemical calculations. The obtained spectra of [4Ta,C,2H]⁺ reveal a dominance of vibrational bands of a H₂Ta₄C⁺ carbide dihydride structure over those indicative for a HTa₄CH⁺ carbyne hydride one, as is unambiguously verified by studies employing various methane isotopologues. Because methane dehydrogenation by metal cations M⁺ typically leads to the formation of either MCH₂⁺ carbene or HMCH⁺ carbyne hydride structures, the observation of a H₂MC⁺ carbide dihydride structure implies that it is imperative to consider this often‐neglected class of carbonaceous intermediates in the reaction of metals with hydrocarbons.

Spectroscopic properties and activated mechanism of NO on isolated cationic tantalum clusters: A first-principles study

The adsorption and dissociation of NO on the cationic Ta₁₅⁺ cluster were investigated using the density-functional theory (DFT) calculations, and the Ta-centered bicapped hexagonal antiprism (BHA) structure of cationic Ta₁₅⁺ cluster can be identified as the global minimum, which reproduces well the infrared multiple photo dissociation (IR-MPD) spectrum. Our results show that the cationic BHATa₁₅⁺ cluster provides the hollow region for NO to interact effectively, and possess larger adsorption strength on the region than other sites. The density of states, charge density differences and frontier molecular orbitals were analyzed to understand the electronic properties of the stable NO-adsorbed isomers. The characteristic IR peaks of the firstly two low-lying isomers are properly assigned, in which the strongest IR peak originates from the N - O stretching vibration. For the dissociation of NO on the BHATa₁₅⁺ cluster, it is found that the reaction path II easily occurs rather than path I due to small reaction barrier, and the cluster may possess the great catalytic behavior to dissociate NO molecule. The present results will inevitably stimulate future theoretical and experimental studies for the design of novel Ta-based catalytic materials for the NO dissociation.

Probing the properties of size dependence and correlation for tantalum clusters: geometry, stability, vibrational spectra, magnetism, and electronic structure

A comprehensive investigation on the equilibrium geometry, relative stability, vibrational spectra, and magnetic and electronic properties of neutral tantalum clusters (Ta_n, n = 2–17) was performed using density functional theory (DFT). We perform a study of the size dependence and correlations among those descriptors of parameters, and showed these could provide a novel way to confirm and predict experimental results. Some new isomer configurations that have never been reported before for tantalum clusters were found. The growth behaviors revealed that a compact geometrical growth route is preferred and develops a body-centered-cubic (BCC) structure with the cluster size increasing. The perfectly fitted functional curve, strong linear evolution, and obvious odd–even oscillation behavior proved their corresponding properties depended on the cluster size. Multiple demonstrations of the magic number were confirmed through the correlated relationships with the relative stability, including the second difference in energy, maximum hardness, and minimum polarizability. An inverse evolution trend between the energy gap and electric dipole moment and strong linear correlation between ionization potentials and polarizability indicated the strong correlation between the magnetic and electronic properties. Vibrational spectroscopy as a fingerprint was used to distinguish the ground state among the competitive geometrical isomers close in energy. The charge density difference isosurface, density of states, and molecular orbitals of selected representative clusters were analyzed to investigate the difference and evolutional trend of the relative stability and electronic structure. In addition, we first calculated the ionization potential and magnetic moment and compared these with the current available experimental data for tantalum clusters.

Structures and magnetic properties of small [Formula: see text] and Co n-1Cr+ (n = 3-5) clusters

Small cobalt clusters [Formula: see text] and their single chromium atom doped counterparts Co _n-1Cr⁺ (n  =  3-5) were studied mass spectrometrically by measuring the infrared multiple photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectra of the corresponding argon tagged complexes. The geometric and electronic structures of the [Formula: see text] and Co _n-1Cr⁺ (n  =  3-5) clusters as well as their Ar complexes were optimized by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The obtained lowest energy structures were confirmed by comparing the IRMPD spectra of [Formula: see text] and [Formula: see text] (n  =  3-5, m  =  3 and 4) with the corresponding calculated IR spectra. The calculations reveal that the doped Co _n-1Cr⁺ clusters retain the geometric structures of the most stable [Formula: see text] clusters. However, the coupling of the local magnetic moments within the clusters is altered in a size-dependent way: the Cr atom is ferromagnetically coupled in Co₂Cr⁺ and Co₃Cr⁺, while it is antiferromagnetically coupled in Co₄Cr⁺.
