Optical Indistinguishability via Twinning Fields

Here we introduce the concept of the twinning field-a driving electromagnetic pulse that induces an identical optical response from two distinct materials. We show that for a large class of pairs of generic many-body systems, a twinning field which renders the systems optically indistinguishable exists. The conditions under which this field exists are derived, and this analysis is supplemented by numerical calculations of twinning fields for both the 1D Fermi-Hubbard model, and tight-binding models of graphene and hexagonal boron nitride. The existence of twinning fields may lead to new research directions in nonlinear optics, materials science, and quantum technologies.

Quantum Ensemble Classification: A Sampling-Based Learning Control Approach

Quantum ensemble classification (QEC) has significant applications in discrimination of atoms (or molecules), separation of isotopes, and quantum information extraction. However, quantum mechanics forbids deterministic discrimination among nonorthogonal states. The classification of inhomogeneous quantum ensembles is very challenging, since there exist variations in the parameters characterizing the members within different classes. In this paper, we recast QEC as a supervised quantum learning problem. A systematic classification methodology is presented by using a sampling-based learning control (SLC) approach for quantum discrimination. The classification task is accomplished via simultaneously steering members belonging to different classes to their corresponding target states (e.g., mutually orthogonal states). First, a new discrimination method is proposed for two similar quantum systems. Then, an SLC method is presented for QEC. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach for the binary classification of two-level quantum ensembles and the multiclass classification of multilevel quantum ensembles.

Photonic reagents for concentration measurement of flu-orescent proteins with overlapping spectra

By exploiting photonic reagents (i.e., coherent control by shaped laser pulses), we employ Optimal Dynamic Discrimination (ODD) as a novel means for quantitatively characterizing mixtures of fluorescent proteins with a large spectral overlap. To illustrate ODD, we simultaneously measured concentrations of in vitro mixtures of Enhanced Blue Fluorescent Protein (EBFP) and Enhanced Cyan Fluorescent Protein (ECFP). Building on this foundational study, the ultimate goal is to exploit the capabilities of ODD for parallel monitoring of genetic and protein circuits by suppressing the spectral cross-talk among multiple fluorescent reporters.

Probing protonation sites of isolated flavins using IR spectroscopy: from lumichrome to the cofactor flavin mononucleotide

Infrared spectra of the isolated protonated flavin molecules lumichrome, lumiflavin, riboflavin (vitamin B2), and the biologically important cofactor flavin mononucleotide are measured in the fingerprint region (600-1850 cm(-1)) by means of IR multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy. Using density functional theory calculations, the geometries, relative energies, and linear IR absorption spectra of several low-energy isomers are calculated. Comparison of the calculated IR spectra with the measured IRMPD spectra reveals that the N10 substituent on the isoalloxazine ring influences the protonation site of the flavin. Lumichrome, with a hydrogen substituent, is only stable as the N1-protonated tautomer and protonates at N5 of the pyrazine ring. The presence of the ribityl unit in riboflavin leads to protonation at N1 of the pyrimidinedione moiety, and methyl substitution in lumiflavin stabilizes the tautomer that is protonated at O2. In contrast, flavin mononucleotide exists as both the O2- and N1-protonated tautomers. The frequencies and relative intensities of the two C=O stretch vibrations in protonated flavins serve as reliable indicators for their protonation site.

Coherent manipulation of free amino acids fluorescence

Coherent manipulation of molecular wavepackets in biomolecules might contribute to the quest towards label-free cellular imaging and protein identification. We report the use of optimally tailored UV laser pulses in pump-probe depletion experiments that selectively enhance or decrease fluorescence between two aromatic amino acids: tryptophan (Trp) and tyrosine (Tyr). Selective fluorescence modulation is achieved with a contrast of ~35%. A neat modification of the time-dependent fluorescence depletion signal of Trp is observed, while the Tyr transient trace remains unchanged. The mechanism invoked for explaining the change of the depletion of Trp is a less efficient coupling between the fluorescing state and the higher non-radiative excited states by the optimally shaped pulse, than by the reference pulse.

Quantum optimal control for the full ensemble of randomly oriented molecules having different field-free Hamiltonians

We have presented the optimal control theory formulation to calculate optimal fields that can control the full ensemble of randomly oriented molecules having different field-free Hamiltonians. The theory is applied to the fifty-fifty mixture of randomly oriented (133)CsI and (135)CsI isotopomers and an optimal field is sought to achieve isotope-selective vibrational excitations with high efficiency. Rotational motion is frozen and two total times (T's) of electric field duration, 460,000 and 920,000 a.u. (11.1 and 22.2 ps), are chosen in the present calculation. As a result, the final yields for T = 460,000 and 920,000 a.u. are calculated to be 0.706 and 0.815, respectively. The relatively high final yield obtained for T = 920,000 a.u. strongly suggests that a single laser pulse can control the full ensemble of randomly oriented non-identical molecules. The result is quite encouraging in terms of the application to isotope-separation processes.
