Communication: Thermodynamic scaling of the Debye process in primary alcohols

Insight into properties of sizable glass former from volumetric measurements

Sizable glass formers feature numerous unique properties and potential applications, but many questions regarding their glass transition dynamics have not been resolved yet. Here, we have analyzed structural relaxation times measured as a function of temperature and pressure in combination with the equation of state obtained from pressure-volume-temperature measurements. Despite evidence from previous dielectric studies indicating a remarkable sensitivity of supercooled dynamics to compression, and contrary to intuition, our results demonstrated the proof for the almost equivalent importance of thermal energy and free volume fluctuations in controlling reorientation dynamics of sizable molecules. The found scaling exponent γ = 3.0 and Ev/Ep ratio of 0.6 were typical for glass-forming materials with relaxation dynamics determined by both effects with a minor advantage of thermal fluctuations involvement. It shows that the high values of key parameters characterizing the sensitivity of the glass transition dynamics to pressure changes, i.e., activation volume ΔV and dTg/dP, are not a valid premise for a remarkable contribution of volume to glass transition dynamics.

Role of anisotropy in understanding the molecular grounds for density scaling in dynamics of glass-forming liquids

Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations of glass-forming liquids play a pivotal role in uncovering the molecular nature of the liquid vitrification process. In particular, much focus was given to elucidating the interplay between the character of intermolecular potential and molecular dynamics behaviour. This has been tried to achieve by simulating the spherical particles interacting via isotropic potential. However, when simulation and experimental data are analysed in the same way by using the density scaling approaches, serious inconsistency is revealed between them. Similar scaling exponent values are determined by analysing the relaxation times and pVT data obtained from computer simulations. In contrast, these values differ significantly when the same analysis is carried out in the case of experimental data. As discussed thoroughly herein, the coherence between results of simulation and experiment can be achieved if anisotropy of intermolecular interactions is introduced to MD simulations. In practice, it has been realized in two different ways: (1) by using the anisotropic potential of the Gay-Berne type or (2) by replacing the spherical particles with quasi-real polyatomic anisotropic molecules interacting through isotropic Lenard-Jones potential. In particular, the last strategy has the potential to be used to explore the relationship between molecular architecture and molecular dynamics behaviour. Finally, we hope that the results presented in this review will also encourage others to explore how 'anisotropy' affects remaining aspects related to liquid-glass transition, like heterogeneity, glass transition temperature, glass forming ability, etc.

Local and global expansivity in water

The supra-molecular structure of a liquid is strongly connected to its dynamics, which in turn control macroscopic properties such as viscosity. Consequently, detailed knowledge about how this structure changes with temperature is essential to understand the thermal evolution of the dynamics ranging from the liquid to the glass. Here, we combine infrared spectroscopy (IR) measurements of the hydrogen (H) bond stretching vibration of water with molecular dynamics simulations and employ a quantitative analysis to extract the inter-molecular H-bond length in a wide temperature range of the liquid. The extracted expansivity of this H-bond differs strongly from that of the average nearest neighbor distance of oxygen atoms obtained through a common conversion of mass density. However, both properties can be connected through a simple model based on a random loose packing of spheres with a variable coordination number, which demonstrates the relevance of supra-molecular arrangement. Furthermore, the exclusion of the expansivity of the inter-molecular H-bonds reveals that the most compact molecular arrangement is formed in the range of ∼316-331K (i.e., above the density maximum) close to the temperature of several pressure-related anomalies, which indicates a characteristic point in the supra-molecular arrangement. These results confirm our earlier approach to deduce inter-molecular H-bond lengths via IR in polyalcohols [Gabriel et al. J. Chem. Phys. 154, 024503 (2021)] quantitatively and open a new alley to investigate the role of inter-molecular expansion as a precursor of molecular fluctuations on a bond-specific level.

A study of OH···O hydrogen bonds along various isolines in 2-ethyl-1-hexanol. Temperature or pressure - which parameter controls their behavior?

The nature of H-bonding interactions is still far from being understood despite intense experimental and theoretical studies on this subject carried out by the leading research centers. In this paper, by a combination of unique high-pressure infrared, dielectric and volumetric data, the intramolecular dynamics of hydroxyl moieties (which provides direct information about H-bonds) was studied along various isolines, i.e., isotherms, isobars, isochrones, and isochores, in a simple monohydroxy alcohol (2-ethyl-1-hexanol). This allowed us to discover that the temperature controls the intermolecular hydrogen bonds, which then affect the intramolecular dynamics of OH units. Although the role of density fluctuations gets stronger as temperature rises. We also demonstrated a clear connection between the intra- and intermolecular dynamics of the associating liquid at high pressure. The data reported herein open a new perspective to explore this important aspect of the glass transition phenomenon and understand H-bonding interactions at varying thermodynamic conditions.

Virial-potential-energy correlation and its relation to density scaling for quasireal model systems

In this paper, we examine the virial- and the potential-energy correlation for quasireal model systems. This correlation constitutes the framework of the theory of the isomorph in the liquid phase diagram commonly examined using simple liquids. Interestingly, our results show that for the systems characterized by structural anisotropy and flexible bonds, the instantaneous values of total virial and total potential energy are entirely uncorrelated. It is due to the presence of the intramolecular interactions because the contributions to the virial and potential energy resulting from the intermolecular interactions still exhibit strong linear dependence. Interestingly, in contrast to the results reported for simple liquids, the slope of the mentioned linear dependence is different than the values of the density scaling exponent. However, our findings show that for quasireal materials, the slope of dependence between the virial and potential energy (resulting from the intermolecular interactions) strongly depends on the interval of intermolecular distances that are taken into account. Consequently, the value of the slope of the discussed relationship, which enables satisfactory density scaling, can be obtained. Interestingly, this conclusion is supported by the results obtained for analogous systems without intermolecular attraction, for which the value the slope of the virial-potential-energy correlation is independent of considered intermolecular distances, directly corresponds to the exponent of the intermolecular repulsion, and finally leads to accurate density scaling.

Molecular heterogeneities in the thermal expansivity of polyalcohols

Density is the key quantity for nearly all the numerous theories of the (dynamic) glass transition of supercooled liquids and melts. As mean field quantity, it is used to describe correlations and heterogeneities between regions consisting of several molecules. In contrast, the question how density is created by the interactions (i.e., bonds) within a molecule and to its nearest neighbors is almost unexplored. To investigate this for the example of a homologous series of polyalcohols (glycerol, threitol, xylitol, and sorbitol), Fourier-Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopy is carried out in a wide range of temperatures from far above to far below the calorimetric glass transition T_g. This enables us to determine the potentials and hence the bond lengths of specific intramolecular and intermolecular interactions. While the former has an expansion coefficient of (∼0.1 pm/100 K) with only smooth changes, the latter shows a 30-40 times stronger response with pronounced kinks at T_g. A comparison with the overall expansion based on mass density reveals that one has to separate between strong (OH⋅⋅⋅O) and weak (CH⋅⋅⋅O) intermolecular hydrogen (H)-bridges. Despite the fact that the latter dominates glassy dynamics, their expansivity is 5 times smaller than that of the weak H-bridges. It is to be expected that such heterogeneities on intramolecular and intermolecular scales are a general phenomenon in liquids and glassy systems demonstrating especially the necessity of atomistic simulations.

Are hydrogen supramolecular structures being suppressed upon nanoscale confinement? The case of monohydroxy alcohols

In this paper, the molecular dynamics, H-bonding pattern and wettability of the primary and secondary monohydroxyalcohols, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol (2E1H), 2-ethyl-1-butanol (2E1B) and 5-methyl-3-heptanol (5M3H) infiltrated into native and functionalized silica and alumina pores having pore diameters, d = 4 nm and d = 10 nm, have been studied with the use of Broadband Dielectric (BDS) and Fourier Transform InfraRed (FTIR) spectroscopies, as well as contact angle measurements. We found significant differences in the behavior of alcohols forming chain- (2E1H, 2E1B) or micelle-like (5M3H) supramolecular structures despite of their similarities in the wettability and interfacial energy. It turned out that nanoassociates as well as H-bonds are more or less affected by the confinement dependently on the chemical structure and alcohol order. Moreover, a peculiar behavior of the self-assemblies at the interface was noted in the latter material (5M3H). Finally, it was found that irrespectively to the sample, type of pores, functionalization, the temperature evolution of Debye relaxation times, τ_D, of the confined systems deviates from the bulk behavior always at similar τ_D due to vitrification of the interfacial layer. This finding is a clear indication that unexpectedly dynamics (mobility) of the supramolecular structures close to the hydrophilic and hydrophobic surfaces is similar in each system.

Influence of the Internal Structure and Intermolecular Interactions on the Correlation between Structural (α) and Secondary (β-JG) Relaxation below the Glass Transition Temperature in Neat Probucol and Its Binary Mixtures with Modified Saccharides

Broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) has been used to study the molecular dynamics and aging process in neat probucol (PRO) as well as its binary mixtures with selected acetylated saccharides. In particular, we applied the Casalini and Roland approach to determine structural relaxation times in the glassy state of the examined systems (so-called isostructural times, τ_iso). Next, using the calculated τ_iso, primitive relaxation times of the coupling model were obtained and compared to the experimental secondary β (Johari-Goldstein (JG) type) relaxation times. Interestingly, it turned out that there is a correlation between the β-JG and the structural (α)-relaxation processes below the glass transition temperature (T < T_g) in each investigated sample. This is a new observation compared to previous studies demonstrating that such a relationship exists only in the supercooled liquid state of neat PRO. Moreover, it was revealed that the stretching parameters obtained from the aging procedure are very close to the ones determined by fitting the dielectric data above the T_g with the use of the Kohlrausch-Williams-Watts function, indicating that the aging process is governed by the α-relaxation. Complementary Fourier transform infrared and X-ray diffraction measurements allowed us to find a possible reason for these findings. It was demonstrated that although there are very weak intermolecular interactions between PRO and modified saccharides, the intra- and intermolecular structure of PRO is practically unaffected by the presence of modified saccharides.

Density Scaling Based Detection of Thermodynamic Regions of Complex Intermolecular Interactions Characterizing Supramolecular Structures

In this paper, applying the density scaling idea to an associated liquid 4-methyl-2-pentanol used as an example, we identify different pressure-volume-temperature ranges within which molecular dynamics is dominated by either complex H-bonded networks most probably leading to supramolecular structures or non-specific intermolecular interactions like van der Waals forces. In this way, we show that the density scaling law for molecular dynamics near the glass transition provides a sensitive tool to detect thermodynamic regions characterized by intermolecular interactions of different type and complexity for a given material in the wide pressure-volume-temperature domain even if its typical form with constant scaling exponent is not obeyed. Moreover, we quantify the observed decoupling between dielectric and mechanical relaxations of the material in the density scaling regime. The suggested methods of analyses and their interpretations open new prospects for formulating models based on proper effective intermolecular potentials describing physicochemical phenomena near the glass transition.

Inflection point in the Debye relaxation time of 2-butyl-1-octanol

We report a striking anomaly in the pressure dependent Debye-relaxation time of the branched monohydroxy alcohol 2-butyl-1-octanol. Evidence of a crossover from slower to faster than exponential pressure dependency was obtained at different temperatures via high pressure broadband dielectric spectroscopy. At the same time, viscosity measurements reveal similar behavior in the viscosity, respectively, the structural relaxation time, indicating a similar origin of the phenomena.

Structural and Dielectric Relaxations in Vitreous and Liquid State of Monohydroxy Alcohol at High Pressure

2-Ethyl-1-hexanol monoalcohol is a well-known molecular glassformer, which for a long time attracts attention of researchers. As in all other monohydroxy alcohols, its dielectric relaxation reveals two distinct relaxation processes attributed to the structural relaxation and another more intense process, which gives rise to a low-frequency Debye-like relaxation. In this monoalcohol, the frequency separation between these two processes reaches an extremely high value of 3 orders of magnitude, which makes this substance a rather convenient object for studies of mechanisms (supposedly common to all monoalcohols) leading to vitrification of this type of liquids. In this work, we apply two experimental techniques, dielectric spectroscopy and ultrasonic measurements (in both longitudinal and transverse polarizations) at high pressure, to study interference between different relaxation mechanisms occurring in this liquid, which could shed light on both structural and dielectric relaxation processes observed in a supercooled liquid and a glass state. Application of high pressure in this case leads to the simplification of the frequency spectrum of dielectric relaxation, where only one asymmetric feature is observed. Nonetheless, the maximum attenuation of the longitudinal wave in ultrasonic experiments at high pressure is observed at temperatures ≈50 K above the corresponding temperature for the transverse wave. This might indicate different mechanisms of structural relaxation in shear and bulk elasticities in this liquid.

Thermodynamic Scaling of the Dynamics of a Strongly Hydrogen-Bonded Glass-Former

We probe the temperature- and pressure-dependent specific volume (v) and dipolar dynamics of the amorphous phase (in both the supercooled liquid and glass states) of the ternidazole drug (TDZ). Three molecular dynamic processes are identified by means of dielectric spectroscopy, namely the α relaxation, which vitrifies at the glass transition, a Johari-Goldstein β JG relaxation, and an intramolecular process associated with the relaxation motion of the propanol chain of the TDZ molecule. The lineshapes of dielectric spectra characterized by the same relaxation time (isochronal spectra) are virtually identical, within the studied temperature and pressure ranges, so that the time-temperature-pressure superposition principle holds for TDZ. The α and β JG relaxation times fulfil the density-dependent thermodynamic scaling: master curves result when they are plotted against the thermodynamic quantity Tv γ , with thermodynamic exponent γ approximately equal to 2. These results show that the dynamics of TDZ, a system characterized by strong hydrogen bonding, is characterized by an isomorphism similar to that of van-der-Waals systems. The low value of γ can be rationalized in terms of the relatively weak density-dependence of the dynamics of hydrogen-bonded systems.

Thermodynamic scaling of molecular dynamics in supercooled liquid state of pharmaceuticals: Itraconazole and ketoconazole

Pressure-Volume-Temperature (PVT) measurements and broadband dielectric spectroscopy were carried out to investigate molecular dynamics and to test the validity of thermodynamic scaling of two homologous compounds of pharmaceutical activity: itraconazole and ketoconazole in the wide range of thermodynamic conditions. The pressure coefficients of the glass transition temperature (dT(g)/dp) for itraconazole and ketoconazole were determined to be equal to 183 and 228 K/GPa, respectively. However, for itraconazole, the additional transition to the nematic phase was observed and characterized by the pressure coefficient dT(n)/dp = 258 K/GPa. From PVT and dielectric data, we obtained that the liquid-nematic phase transition is governed by the relaxation time since it occurred at constant τ(α) = 10(-5) s. Furthermore, we plotted the obtained relaxation times as a function of T(-1)v(-γ), which has revealed that the validity of thermodynamic scaling with the γ exponent equals to 3.69 ± 0.04 and 3.64 ± 0.03 for itraconazole and ketoconazole, respectively. Further analysis of the scaling parameter in itraconazole revealed that it unexpectedly decreases with increasing relaxation time, which resulted in dramatic change of the shape of the thermodynamic scaling master curve. While in the case of ketoconazole, it remained the same within entire range of data (within experimental uncertainty). We suppose that in case of itraconazole, this peculiar behavior is related to the liquid crystals' properties of itraconazole molecule.

Effect of compression on the relationship between viscosity and dielectric relaxation time in hydrogen-bonded primary alcohols

High pressure viscosity and dielectric measurements were carried out on two monohydroxy alcohols, 2-ethyl-1-hexanol and 5-methyl-2-hexanol, at room temperature. Analysis of the dielectric relaxation times versus viscosity revealed the breakdown of the Einstein-Debye relation above some characteristic pressure. The failure of the Einstein-Debye relation is a manifestation of pressure induced changes of supramolecular hydrogen bonded structures which occur in these liquids.

Molecular dynamics changes induced by solvent in 2-ethyl-1-hexanol

Apart from other classes of materials, supramolecular structures may exist in H-bonded liquids due to the existence of hydrogen bonding. The dynamics of these structures remains one of the most exciting topics of interest of modern science because of its crucial meaning for the behavior of water and its participation in biological processes. A special group of these liquids form monohydroxy alcohols due to their similarity to water, their ability to vitrification, and the existence of the Debye relaxation process in dielectric loss spectra reflecting the dynamics of H-bond structures. Dynamics of these structures can be studied by changes of thermodynamic conditions, by immersion of the liquid into the constraint geometry, and by dilution in a nonassociated solvent. Herein we studied the behavior of relaxation dynamics of mixtures of 2-ethyl-1-hexanol with bromobutane using broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Analysis of the results exhibits the existence of crossover in temperature dependence of static permittivity of the Debye process at some particular temperature T(c). This temperature shifts to lower values with increasing concentration of bromobutane. Moreover, below some "critical" concentration of alcohol in the mixture the shape of the Debye process loses exponentiality and the temperature dependence of relaxation times starts to change. This change was illuminated based on the analysis of the steepness index. For the lowest concentration, the value of this parameter becomes the same as the value of the steepness index of faster relaxation, called process II, of pure alcohol at ambient pressure. The observed change in relaxation dynamics with lowering concentration of alcohol is astonishingly similar to the behavior observed in the same material at elevated pressure. A possible origin of these similarities is also discussed.
