A geometrical correction for the inter- and intra-molecular basis set superposition error in Hartree-Fock and density functional theory calculations for large systems

Small basis set density functional theory method for cost-efficient, large-scale condensed matter simulations

We present an efficient first-principles based method geared toward reliably predicting the structures of solid materials across the Periodic Table. To this end, we use a density functional theory baseline with a compact, near-minimal min+s basis set, yielding low computational costs and memory demands. Since the use of such a small basis set leads to systematic errors in chemical bond lengths, we develop a linear pairwise correction, available for elements Z = 1-86 (excluding the lanthanide series), parameterized for use with the Perdew-Burke-Ernzerhof exchange-correlation functional. We demonstrate the reliability of this corrected approach for equilibrium volumes across the Periodic Table and the transferability to differently coordinated environments and multi-elemental crystals. We examine relative energies, forces, and stresses in geometry optimizations and molecular dynamics simulations.

A Phosphanyl Phosphagermene and its Reactivity

Reaction of a nucleophilic germylene Ge[CH(SiMe3)2]2 with the phosphanyl phosphaketene [{(H2C)(NDipp)}2P]PCO induces decarbonylation to form a phosphanyl phosphagermene [{(H2C)(NDipp)}2P]P=Ge[CH(SiMe3)2]2 (1; Dipp=2,6-diisopropyl-phenyl). Addition of CO2 or MeCN to 1 results in [3+2]-cycloaddition reactions to afford five-membered heterocycles. This mode of reactivity is reminiscent of that observed for frustrated Lewis pairs, with the pendant phosphanyl group acting as a base and the germanium center as a Lewis acid. Contrastingly, 1,2-addition across the P=Ge bond was observed when using ammonia, small primary amines (NH2 nP), or metal complexes (e. g. Au(PPh3)Cl and ZnEt2). These latter reactions allow for the one-step synthesis of metal phosphide complexes.

A solid noncovalent organic double-helix framework catalyzes asymmetric [6 + 4] cycloaddition

Whereas [4 + 2] cycloadditions are among the most powerful tools in the chemist's synthetic arsenal, controlling reactivity and selectivity of [6 + 4] cycloadditions has proven to be extremely challenging. Such transformations, especially if compatible with simple hydrocarbon-based substrates, could ultimately provide a general approach to highly valuable and otherwise difficult to access 10-membered rings. We report here that highly acidic and confined imidodiphosphorimidate catalysts do not catalyze this reaction under homogeneous conditions. Notably, however, they can spontaneously precipitate an insoluble and double helix-shaped noncovalent organic framework, which acts as a distinctively reactive and stereoselective catalyst of [6 + 4] cycloadditions of simple dienes with tropone.

Modulating Hydrogen Shuttling in Ammonia by Neutral and Cationic Boron-Containing Frustrated Lewis Pairs (FLPs)

Xanthene-backbone FLPs featuring secondary borane functions -B(ArX)H (where ArX=C6F5 (ArF) or C6Cl5 (ArCl)) have been targeted through reactions of the dihydroboranes Me2S ⋅ BArXH2 with [4,5-xanth(PR2)Li]2 (R=Ph, iPr), and investigated in the synthesis of related cationic systems via hydride abstraction. The reactivity of these systems (both cationic and charge neutral) with ammonia have been probed, with a view to probing the potential for proton shuttling via N-H bond 'activation.' We find that in the case of four-coordinate boron systems (cationic or change neutral), the N-H linkage remains intact, supported by a NH⋅⋅⋅P hydrogen bond which is worth up to 17 kcal mol-1 thermodynamically, and enabled by planarization of the flexible xanthene scaffold. For cationic three coordinate systems, N-to-P proton transfer is viable, driven by the ability of the boron centre to stabilise the [NH2]- conjugate base through N-to-B π bonding. This proton transfer can be shown to be reversible in the presence of excess ammonia, depending on the nature of the B-bound ArX group. It is viable in the case of C6F5 substituents, but is prevented by the more sterically encumbering and secondary donor-stabilising capabilities of the C6Cl5 substituent.

Transformation of Metal-Organic Framework from Kinetic to Thermodynamic Product for Controlled Delivery of Vitamin C

A biocompatible metal-organic framework (MOF), named HSTC-4, constructed using the flexible 4,4'-oxybis(benzoic acid) (OBA), was developed to enable efficient loading and controlled release of vitamin C (VC) through a combination of strategies involving ligand length, structure design, and metal selection. The kinetic product HSTC-4 demonstrates a propensity for transforming into the thermodynamically stable HSTC-5 under external stimuli, such as photoillumination and vacuum heating, as witnessed by single-crystal to single-crystal transformation. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the VC guest molecules exhibit stronger binding affinity with HSTC-5 due to its narrower pores compared to HSTC-4, resulting in a slower release of VC from VC@HSTC-5. Furthermore, precise control over VC release can be achieved by introducing surface modifications involving SiO2 onto the structure of VC@HSCT-5, while simultaneously adjusting environmental factors such as pH and temperature conditions. Preliminary cell culture experiments and cytotoxicity assays highlight the biocompatibility of HSTC-5, suggesting that it is a promising platform for sustained drug delivery and diverse biomedical applications.

A nucleophilic beryllyl complex via metathesis at [Be-Be]2

Owing to its high toxicity, the chemistry of element number four, beryllium, is poorly understood. However, as the lightest elements provide the basis for fundamental models of chemical bonding, there is a need for greater insight into the properties of beryllium. In this context, the chemistry of the homo-elemental Be-Be bond is of fundamental interest. Here the ligand metathesis chemistry of diberyllocene (1; CpBeBeCp)-a stable complex with a Be-Be bond-has been investigated. These studies yield two complexes with Be-Be bonds: Cp*BeBeCp (2) and [K{(HCDippN)2BO}2]BeBeCp (3; Dipp = 2,6-diisopropylphenyl). Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the Be-Be bond in 3 is polarized to such an extent that the complex could be formulated as a mixed-oxidation state Be0/BeII complex. Correspondingly, it is demonstrated that 3 can transfer the 'beryllyl' anion, [BeCp]-, to an organic substrate, by analogy with the reactivity of sp2-sp3 diboranes. Indeed, this work reveals striking similarities between the homo-elemental bonding linkages of beryllium and boron, despite the respective metallic and non-metallic natures of these elements.

A geminal antimony(iii)/phosphorus(iii) frustrated Lewis pair

The geminal Lewis pair (F5C2)2SbCH2P(tBu)2 (1) was prepared by reacting (F5C2)2SbCl with LiCH2P(tBu)2. Despite its extremely electronegative pentafluoroethyl substituents, the neutral 1 exhibits a relatively soft acidic antimony function according to the HSAB concept (hard-soft acid-base). These properties lead to a reversibility in the binding of CS2 to 1, as observed by VT-NMR spectroscopy, while no reaction with CO2 is observed. The reaction behaviour towards heterocumulenes and the specific interaction situation in the CS2 adduct were analysed by quantum chemical calculations. The FLP-type reactivity of 1 has also been demonstrated by reaction with a variety of small molecules (SO2, PhNCO, PhNCS, (MePh2P)AuCl). The reactions of 1 with PhNCO and PhNCS led to different types of cyclic addition products: PhNCO adds with its N[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond and PhNCS adds preferentially with its C[double bond, length as m-dash]S bond. The reaction of 1 with (MePh2P)AuCl gave an adduct {[(F5C2)2SbCH2(tBu)2P]2Au}+ with a clamp-like structure binding a chloride anion by its two antimony atoms in chelate mode. Compound 1 and its adducts have been characterised by X-ray diffraction experiments, multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, elemental analyses and computational calculations (DFT, QTAIM, IQA).

A Polarizable Forcefields for Glyoxal Acetals as Electrolyte Components for Lithium-Ion Batteries

In this work we have derived the parameters of an AMOEBA-like polarizable forcefield for electrolytes based on tetramethoxy and tetraethoxy-glyoxal acetals, and propylene carbonate. The resulting forcefield has been validated using both ab-initio data and the experimental properties of the fluids. Using molecular dynamics simulations, we have investigated the structural features and the solvation properties of both the neat liquids and of the corresponding 1 M LiTFSI electrolytes at the molecular level. We present a detailed analysis of the Li ion solvation shells, of their structure and highlight the different behavior of the solvents in terms of their molecular structure and coordinating features.

Computational 3D Models of Fe2+/3+-Aβ1-42 Complexes Associated with Alzheimer's Disease

The interaction between iron and amyloid-beta (Aβ) peptides has received significant attention in Alzheimer's disease (AD) research due to its potential implications in developing this pathology. However, the coordination preferences of iron and Aβ1-42 have not been thoroughly investigated or remain unknown. This study employs a computational protocol that combines homology modeling techniques with quantum mechanics (DTF-xTB) calculations to build and evaluate several 3D models of Fe2+/3+-Aβ1-42. Our results reveal well-defined complexes for both the metal and peptide moieties, and we discuss the molecular interactions stabilizing these complexes by elucidating the coordinating environments and binding preferences. These proposed models offer valuable insights into the role of iron in Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology.

Cobalt-Mediated Photochemical C-H Arylation of Pyrroles

Precious metal complexes remain ubiquitous in photoredox catalysis (PRC) despite concerted efforts to find more earth-abundant catalysts and replacements based on 3d metals in particular. Most otherwise plausible 3d metal complexes are assumed to be unsuitable due to short-lived excited states, which has led researchers to prioritize the pursuit of longer excited-state lifetimes through careful molecular design. However, we report herein that the C-H arylation of pyrroles and related substrates (which are benchmark reactions for assessing the efficacy of photoredox catalysts) can be achieved using a simple and readily accessible octahedral bis(diiminopyridine) cobalt complex, [1-Co](PF6)2. Notably, [1-Co]2+ efficiently functionalizes both chloro- and bromoarene substrates despite the short excited-state lifetime of the key photoexcited intermediate *[1-Co]2+ (8 ps). We present herein the scope of this C-H arylation protocol and provide mechanistic insights derived from detailed spectroscopic and computational studies. These indicate that, despite its transient existence, reduction of *[1-Co]2+ is facilitated via pre-assembly with the NEt3 reductant, highlighting an alternative strategy for the future development of 3d metal-catalyzed PRC.

Aromatic poly (amino acids) as an effective low-temperature demulsifier for treating crude oil-in-water emulsions

Amphiphilic aromatic poly (amino acids) polymers were designed as biodegradability demulsifiers with higher aromaticity, stronger polarity, and side chain-like combs. The effects of demulsifier dosage, structural characteristics and emulsion properties such as pH, salinity, and oil content on the demulsification efficiency were investigated. The results show that the poly (L-glutamic-benzyl ester)-block-poly (L-phenylalanine) (PBLG15-b-PPA15) as the demulsifier can remove more than 99.97% of the oil in a 5.0 wt% oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion at room temperature within 2 min. The poly (L-tyrosine)-block-poly (L-phenylalanine) (PTyr15-b-PPA15) with environmental durability demonstrates high effectiveness, universality, and demulsification speed. It achieves a remarkable demulsification efficiency of up to 99.99% for a 20.0 wt% O/W emulsion at room temperature. The demulsification mechanism indicates that demulsifiers have sufficient interfacial activity can quickly migrate to the oil-water interface after being added to the emulsions. Additionally, when demulsifiers are present in a continuous phase in the molecular form, their "teeth" side chains are beneficial for increasing coalescence and flocculation capacities. Furthermore, according to the Density Functional Theory (DFT) calculations, enhancing the intermolecular interactions between demulsifiers and the primary native surfactants that form an oil-water interfacial film is a more efficient approach to reducing demulsification temperature and improving demulsification efficiency and rate.

Polydopamine coating for enhanced electrostatic adsorption of methylene blue by multiwalled carbon nanotubes in alkaline environments

The removal of dye molecules in alkaline environments is an issue that should receive increased attention. In this study, the interaction mechanism between polydopamine-modified multiwalled carbon nanotubes (P-MWCNTs) and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with the cationic dye methylene blue (MB) in alkaline environments was explained in depth by adsorption, spectroscopy, and density functional theory (DFT). The mechanism of action and dominant forces between the adsorbent and adsorbate were analyzed graphically by introducing energy decomposition analysis (EDA) and an independent gradient model (IGM) into the DFT calculations. In addition, the force distribution was investigated through an isosurface. Moreover, batch adsorption studies were conducted to evaluate the performance of MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs for MB removal in alkaline environments. The maximum MB adsorption capacities of the MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs in solution were 113.3 mg‧g-1 and 230.4 mg‧g-1, respectively, at pH 9. The IGM and EDA showed that the better adsorption capacity of the P-MWCNTs originated from the enhancement of the electrostatic effect by the proton dissociation of polydopamine. Moreover, the adsorption of MB by MWCNTs and P-MWCNTs in alkaline environments was governed by dispersion and electrostatic effects, respectively. Through this study, it is hoped that progress will be made in the use of DFT to explore the mechanism of adsorbent-adsorbate interactions.

Binding energies of ethanol and ethylamine on interstellar water ices: synergy between theory and experiments

Experimental and computational chemistry are two disciplines used to conduct research in astrochemistry, providing essential reference data for both astronomical observations and modeling. These approaches not only mutually support each other, but also serve as complementary tools to overcome their respective limitations. Leveraging on such synergy, we characterized the binding energies (BEs) of ethanol (CH3CH2OH) and ethylamine (CH3CH2NH2), two interstellar complex organic molecules (iCOMs), on crystalline and amorphous water ices through density functional theory (DFT) calculations and temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) experiments. Experimentally, CH3CH2OH and CH3CH2NH2 behave similarly, in which desorption temperatures are higher on the water ices than on a bare gold surface. Computed cohesive energies of pure ethanol and ethylamine bulk structures allow describing of the BEs of the pure species deposited on the gold surface, as extracted from the TPD curve analyses. The BEs of submonolayer coverages of CH3CH2OH and CH3CH2NH2 on the water ices cannot be directly extracted from TPD due to their co-desorption with water, but they are computed through DFT calculations, and found to be greater than the cohesive energy of water. The behaviour of CH3CH2OH and CH3CH2NH2 is different when depositing adsorbate multilayers on the amorphous ice, in that, according to their computed cohesive energies, ethylamine layers present weaker interactions compared to ethanol and water. Finally, from the computed BEs of ethanol, ethylamine and water, we can infer that the snow-lines of these three species in protoplanetary disks will be situated at different distances from the central star. It appears that a fraction of ethanol and ethylamine is already frozen on the grains in the water snow-lines, causing their incorporation in water-rich planetesimals.

Combining low-cost electronic structure theory and low-cost parallel computing architecture

The computational efficiency of low-cost electronic structure methods can be further improved by leveraging heterogenous computing architectures. The software package TeraChem has been developed since 2008 to make use of graphical processing units (GPUs), particularly their strong single-precision performance, for the acceleration of quantum chemical calculations. Here, we present the implementation of three low-cost methods, namely HF-3c, PBEh-3c, and the recently introduced ωB97X-3c. We show that these can benefit in terms of performance when combined with "consumer grade" GPUs by leveraging the mixed precision integral handling in TeraChem. The current limitation of the latter's GPU integral library is that Gaussian integrals only for functions with angular momentum l < 3 can be computed, which generally restricts the achievable accuracy in terms of the one-particle basis set. Particularly, the implementation of the ωB97X-3c method now enables higher accuracy with this setting which, in turn, provides the most efficient implementation accessible with consumer-grade hardware. We furthermore show that the implemented 3c methods can be combined with the hh-TDA formalism. This gives new and efficient low-cost multi-configurational excited states methods, which are benchmarked for the description of lowest vertical excitation energies in this work. All in all, the combination of these efficient electronic structure theory methods with affordable highly parallelized computing hardware provides an optimal computational and monetary cost to accuracy ratio.

Scaffold-Oriented Asymmetric Catalysis: Conformational Modulation of Transition State Multivalency during a Catalyst-Controlled Assembly of a Pharmaceutically Relevant Atropisomer

A new class of superbasic, bifunctional peptidyl guanidine catalysts is presented, which enables the organocatalytic, atroposelective synthesis of axially chiral quinazolinediones. Computational modeling unveiled the conformational modulation of the catalyst by a novel phenyl urea N-cap, that preorganizes the structure into the active, folded state. A previously unanticipated noncovalent interaction involving a difluoroacetamide acting as a hybrid mono- or bidentate hydrogen bond donor emerged as a decisive control element inducing atroposelectivity. These discoveries spurred from a scaffold-oriented project inspired from a fascinating investigational BTK inhibitor featuring two stable chiral axes and relies on a mechanistic framework that was foreign to the extant lexicon of asymmetric catalysis.

Chiral Canoe-Like Pd0 or Pt0 Alloyed Copper Alkynyl Nanoclusters Display Near-Infrared Luminescence

Alloying nanoclusters (NCs) has emerged as a widely explored and versatile strategy for tailoring tunable properties, facilitating in-depth atomic-level investigations of structure-property correlations. In this study, we have successfully synthesized six atomically precise copper NCs alloyed with Group 10 metals (Pd or Pt). Notably, the Pd0 or Pt0 atom situated at the center of the distorted hexagonal antiprism Pd0/Pt0@Cu12 cage, coordinated with twelve Cu+ and two tBuC≡C- ligands. Moreover, ligand exchange strategies demonstrated the potential for Cl- and Br- to replace one or two alkynyl ligands positioned at the top or side of the NCs. The chirality exhibited by these racemic NCs is primarily attributed to the involvement of halogens and a chiral (Pd/Pt)@Cu18 skeleton. Furthermore, all the NCs exhibit near-infrared (NIR) luminescence, characterized by emission peaks at 705-755 nm, lifetimes ranging from 6.630 to 9.662 μs, and absolute photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) of 1.75 %-2.52 % in their crystalline state. The experimental optical properties of these NCs are found to be in excellent agreement with the results of theoretical calculations. These alloy NCs not only offer valuable insights into the synthesis of Pd0/Pt0-Cu alloy NCs, but also bridge the gap in understanding the structure-luminescence relationships of Pd0/Pt0-Cu molecules.

Enhancement of energy decomposition analysis in fragment molecular orbital calculations

Energy decomposition analysis is one of the most attractive features of fragment molecular orbital (FMO) calculations from the point of view of practical applications. Here we report some enhancements for PIEDA in the ABINIT-MP program. One is a separation of the dispersion-type stabilization from the electron correlation energy, traditionally referred to as the "dispersion interaction" (DI). Another is an alternative evaluation of the electrostatic (ES) interaction using the restrained electrostatic potential (RESP) charges. The GA:CT stacked base pair and the Trp-Cage miniprotein were used as illustrative examples.

A literature review of the increased intracellular free calcium concentration by biofield therapy or laser exposure. An explanation by using a theoretical study of hydrated calcium ions

INTRODUCTION

A revision of several experimental results on cells shows that electromagnetic radiation, either produced by biofield therapy (BFT) or laser, induced an increase in intracellular free calcium concentration. An explanation of this phenomenon is proposed.

METHODS

Quantum chemistry calculations were performed on Ca2+ with different degrees of hydration with the DFT/r2SCAN-3c method together with the implicit solvation model SMD.

RESULTS

Ca2+ dehydration energy by quantum calculations, in an aqueous medium, coincides with the experimental results of the energy of the photon emitted in biofield therapies and lasers. This strongly suggests that the increased intracellular free calcium concentration is because of calcium ion dehydration upon the application of radiation. The Ca2+ dehydration increases the membrane potential due to an augment of the net charge on Ca2+ and it moves near the membrane by the attraction of its negative ions. The voltage-dependent channels are also activated by this membrane potential.

CONCLUSION

The increased intracellular Ca2+ concentration occurs with biofield therapy (BFT) or laser. A novel explanation is given based on resonance-induced Ca2+ dehydration with applied radiation, supported by experimental data and theoretical calculations.

Synthesis and Characterization of Novel Cobalt Carbonyl Phosphorus and Arsenic Clusters

Phosphorus- and arsenic-containing cobalt clusters are an interesting class of compounds that continue to provide new structures with captivating bonding patterns. Although the first members of this family were reported 45 years ago, the number of such species is still limited within the broad family of transition metal complexes bearing pnictogen atoms. Herein, we present the reaction of Co2(CO)8 as a cobalt source with a number of phosphorus- and arsenic-containing compounds under variable reaction conditions. These reactions result in various known and novel cobalt phosphorus and cobalt arsenic clusters in which different nuclearity ratios between P/As and Co exist. All those clusters were characterized by X-ray structural analysis and partly by IR, 31P{1H} NMR, EI-MS and elemental analysis. This comprehensive study is the first detailed study in this field that reveals the richness of compounds that could be obtained only by modifying the ratio of used reactants and the involved reaction conditions.

Sorting drug conformers in enzyme active sites: the XTB way

In the present study, we have used the MEI196 set of interaction energies to investigate low-cost computational chemistry approaches for the calculation of binding between a molecule and its environment. Density functional theory (DFT) methods, when used with the vDZP basis set, yield good agreement with the reference energies. On the other hand, semi-empirical methods are less accurate as expected. By examining different groups of systems within MEI196 that contain species of a similar nature, we find that chemical similarity leads to cancellation of errors in the calculation of relative binding energies. Importantly, the semi-empirical method GFN1-xTB (XTB1) yields reasonable results for this purpose. We have thus further assessed the performance of XTB1 for calculating relative energies of docking poses of substrates in enzyme active sites represented by cluster models or within the ONIOM protocol. The results support the observations on error cancellation. This paves the way for the use of XTB1 in parts of large-scale virtual screening workflows to accelerate the drug discovery process.

Unveiling the synergy: a combined experimental and theoretical study of β-cyclodextrin with melatonin

Melatonin (MT) is a vital hormone controlling biorhythms, and optimizing its release in the human body is crucial. To address MT's unfavorable pharmacokinetics, we explored the inclusion complexes of MT with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD). Nano spray drying was applied to efficiently synthesize these complexes in three molar ratios (MT : β-CD = 1 : 1, 2 : 1, and 1 : 2), reducing reagent use and expediting inclusion. The complex powders were characterized through thermal analyses (TGA and DSC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and in vitro MT release measurements via high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). In parallel, computational studies were conducted, examining the stability of MT : β-CD complexes by means of unbiased semi-empirical conformational searches refined by DFT, which produced a distribution of MT : β-CD binding enthalpies. Computational findings highlighted that these complexes are stabilized by specific hydrogen bonds and non-specific dispersive forces, with stronger binding in the 1 : 1 complex, which was corroborated by in vitro release data. Furthermore, the alignment between simulated and experimental FTIR spectra demonstrated the quality of both the structural model and computational methodology, which was crucial to enhance our comprehension of optimizing MT's release for therapeutic applications.

How do microplastics alter molluscicidal activity? Effects of weathered microplastics and niclosamide in developing freshwater snails

Despite the wide distribution and persistence of microplastics (MPs), their interactive effects with molluscicides are unknown. Schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease, affects 236.6 million people worldwide. Niclosamide (NCL) is the only molluscicide recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO) and it is used to control the population of Schistosoma spp.'s intermediate host. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate of the interaction between polyethylene (PE) MPs and NCL, and their associated toxicity in the freshwater snail Biomphalaria glabrata (Say 1818). Weathered PE MPs were characterized and theoretical analysis of NCL-MP adsorption nature was made using quantum mechanical calculations. The toxicity of NCL isolated (0.0265 to 0.0809 mg L-1) and under interaction with PE MPs (3400 μg L-1) in B. glabrata embryos and newly hatched snails was analyzed. In silico analysis confirmed the adsorption mechanisms of NCL into PE MPs. PE MPs decreased the NCL toxicity to both B. glabrata developmental stages, increasing their survival and NCL lethal concentrations, indicating concerns regarding NCL use as molluscicide in aquatic environments polluted by MPs. In conclusion, MPs may change the efficiency of chemicals used in snail control programs.

Understanding Alkene Interaction with Metal-Modified Zeolites: Thermodynamics and Mechanism of Bonding in the π-Complex

Zeolites modified with metal cations are perspective catalysts for converting light alkenes to valuable chemicals. A crucial step of the transformation is an alkene interaction with zeolite to afford π-complex with metal cations. The mechanism of alkene bonding with cations is still unclear. To address this problem, propene adsorption on H+ (Bro̷nsted acid site), Na+, Ca2+, Zn2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Cu+, and Ag+ cationic sites in ZSM-5 zeolite has been studied by quantum chemical calculations in terms of adsorption enthalpy, νC═C frequency, and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis together with natural energy decomposition analysis (NEDA). It is revealed that the conventional concept of σ- and π-bonding is only partially applicable to alkene interaction with metal cations in zeolites. The orbital interaction between an alkene molecule and a metal site is more complex. Several different bonding mechanisms have been identified depending on the nature and electron configuration of the metal cation. This finding explains the complex correlations observed for propene π-complex stability and νC═C frequency shift or charge transfer from the alkene molecule. The results provide the basis for further understanding the interactions between alkenes and inorganic solid Bro̷nsted and Lewis acids.

Peraurated ruthenium hydride carbonyl clusters: aurophilicity, isolobal analogy, structural isomerism, and fluxionality

The stepwise addition of increasing amounts of Au(PPh3)Cl to [HRu4(CO)12]3- (1) results in the sequential formation of [HRu4(CO)12(AuPPh3)]2- (2), [HRu4(CO)12(AuPPh3)2]- (3), and HRu4(CO)12(AuPPh3)3 (4). Alternatively, 4 can be obtained upon addition of HBF4·Et2O (two mole equivalents) to 3. Further addition of acid to 3 (three mole equivalents) results in the formation of the tetra-aurated cluster Ru4(CO)12(AuPPh3)4 (5). Compounds 2-5 have been characterized by IR, 1H and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopies. Moreover, the molecular structures of 3-5 have been determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction as [NEt4][3]·2CH2Cl2, 4-b·2CH2Cl2, 4-a, 5·0.5CH2Cl2·solv, and 5·solv crystalline solids. Two different isomers of 4, that is 4-a and 4-b, have been crystallographically characterized and their rapid interconversion in solution was studied by variable temperature 1H and 31P{1H} NMR spectroscopies. Weak aurophilic Au⋯Au contacts have been detected in the solid state structures of 3-5. Computational studies have been performed in order to elucidate bonding and isomerism, as well as to predict the possible structure of the elusive species 2.

A Linear Two-Coordinate Cr(II) Complex: Synthesis, Characterization, and Reactivity

The synthesis and characterization of a linear two-coordinate Cr(II) amido complex, Cr{N(t Bu)Dipp}2 (Dipp=2,6-diisopropylphenyl), from the reaction of 1 molar equivalent (equiv) of CrCl2 and 2 equiv. of LiN(t Bu)Dipp is reported. Single-crystal X-ray diffractometry (SC-XRD) analysis revealed that it has a short Cr-N bond distance of 1.8878(9) Å, which could be attributed to the relatively less bulky nature of the amido ligand compared with reported systems. Furthermore, the oxidation reaction of the two-coordinate Cr(II) complex was explored. The oxidation reaction of Cr{N(t Bu)Dipp}2 with the one-electron oxidants AgOTf and [FeCp2 ][BArF 4 ] (BArF 4 - =[B{C6 H3 -3,5-(CF3 )2 }4 ]- ) afforded the trigonal planar three- and bent two-coordinate Cr(III) complexes Cr{N(t Bu)Dipp}2 (OTf) and [Cr{N(t Bu)Dipp}2 ][BArF 4 ], respectively. The reaction of Cr{N(t Bu)Dipp}2 with 1 equiv. of the organic azides AdN3 (Ad=1-adamantyl) and PhN3 afforded the three-coordinate Cr(IV) imido complexes Cr{N(t Bu)Dipp}2 (NAd) and Cr{N(t Bu)Dipp}2 (NPh), respectively. The reaction of Cr{N(t Bu)Dipp}2 and two equiv. of Me3 NO afforded the Cr(VI) dioxo complex Cr{N(t Bu)Dipp}2 (O)2 . The reaction of Cr{N(t Bu)Dipp}2 with 1 equiv. of CyN=C=NCy resulted in the insertion of the carbodiimide into the Cr-N bond, with the formation of a three-coordinate Cr(II) complex. Finally, density functional theory (DFT) calculations were used to elucidate the electronic structure of these complexes.

Juggling Optoelectronics and Catalysis: The Dual Talents of Bench Stable 1,4-Azaborinines

Boron- and nitrogen-doped polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (B-PAHs) have established a strong foothold in the realm of organic electronics. However, their catalytic potential remains largely untapped. In this study, we synthesise and characterise two bench stable B,N-doped PAH derivatives based on a 1,4-azaborinine motif. Most importantly, the anthracene derived structure is an efficient catalyst in the reduction of various carbonyls and imines. These results underscore the potential of B,N-PAHs in catalytic transformations, setting the stage for deeper exploration in this chemical space.

The mechanism of photodegradation reaction of different dissociation forms of tetrabromobisphenol S in water with free radicals and the ecotoxicity evaluation of related products

Tetrabromobisphenol S (TBBPS) is a widely used brominated flame retardant that has attracted environmental concern due to its abundant presence in water. The objective of this study is to systematically analyze the direct photolysis and degradation mechanisms of TBBPS in two different dissociation forms in water, as well as to evaluate their toxicological effects induced by •OH, 1O2, and •NO2 radicals. The degradation mechanism of TBBPS is investigated with density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) methods, and the toxicity of the degradation products is assessed through toxicological studies. The results of the study indicate that the OH-addition and H-abstraction reactions are favorable pathways for •OH-induced TBBPS degradation. The H-abstraction reaction of TBBPS0 with •OH was more favorable than the •OH addition reaction. However, in the degradation of TBBPS-, the •OH addition reaction was favored over the H-abstraction reaction. Additionally, the indirect photolysis of TBBPS by 1O2 and •NO2 in water was found to be easier for TBBPS- compared to TBBPS0, with degradation mechanisms involving Br-substitution and NO2-addition reactions. The higher Ea values calculated indicate that the degradation of TBBPS by 1O2 and •NO2 in water has been a secondary reaction. The direct photolysis reaction pathway of TBBPS in water has involved the cleavage of the S1-C7 and S1-C16 bonds. For TBBPS0 in the S1/T1 states, the primary reaction pathway is the cleavage of the S1-C16 bond, while for TBBPS-, the primary reaction pathway is the cleavage of the S1-C7 bond. Furthermore, the computational toxicology results indicate a slight increase in the toxicity levels of most products, highlighting the significance of investigating the degradation byproducts of TBBPS in greater detail.

Effect of different defects on the competitive adsorption of formaldehyde and water on the surface of carbon materials: Density functional theory study

The adsorption of formaldehyde by carbon materials is extremely limited and is also greatly influenced by the competitive adsorption of water. Therefore, it is of great significance to investigate the effect of different defects on the competitive adsorption of formaldehyde and water on the surface of carbon materials, and consequently the targeted modification of carbon materials to promote the adsorption of formaldehyde in air. In this study, multi-scale simulations were conducted to explore the problem of competitive adsorption of water and formaldehyde on the surface of carbon materials by quantum chemistry and molecular dynamics. IGMH, QTAIM, energy decomposition, electron transfer, and so on were used to conduct a comprehensive analysis of the problem of competitive adsorption of water and formaldehyde on the surface of carbon materials. The reasons for the formation of competitive adsorption between water and formaldehyde were firstly clarified, and then the adsorption interactions of different oxygen-containing functional groups on formaldehyde and water were investigated separately, which were found that the competitive adsorption of water and formaldehyde molecules by different types of oxygen-containing functional groups caused different results. And the introduction of intrinsic defects can promote the adsorption of formaldehyde in the presence of water competition for adsorption, which can well compensate the inhibitory effect of water on the adsorption of formaldehyde with strong polar functional groups. Finally, the results obtained from simulations were used to guide the modification experiments, and the experimental results were in accord with the simulation results. This study provides a new idea for the preparation of materials for efficient formaldehyde adsorption under certain humidity.

Vitamin C Affinity to TiO2 Nanotubes: A Computational Study by Hybrid Density Functional Theory Calculations

Titanium dioxide nanotubes (TNT) have been extensively studied because of their unique properties, which make such systems ideal candidates for biomedical application, especially for the targeted release of drugs. However, knowledge about the properties of TiO2 nanotubes with typical dimensions of the order of the nanometer is limited, especially concerning the adsorption of molecules that can be potentially loaded in actual devices. In this work, we investigate, by means of simulations based on hybrid density functional theory, the adsorption of Vitamin C molecules on different nanotubes through a comparative analysis of the properties of different structures. We consider two different anatase TiO2 surfaces, the most stable (101) and the more reactive (001)A; we evaluate the role of the curvature, the thickness and of the diameter as well as of the rolling direction of the nanotube. Different orientations of the molecule with respect to the surface are studied in order to identify any trends in the adsorption mechanism. Our results show that there is no preferential functional group of the molecule interacting with the substrate, nor any definite spatial dependency, like a rolling orientation or the concavity of the nanotube. Instead, the adsorption is driven by geometrical factors only, i.e., the favorable matching of the position and the alignment of any functional groups with undercoordinated Ti atoms of the surface, through the interplay between chemical and hydrogen bonds. Differently from flat slabs, thicker nanotubes do not improve the stability of the adsorption, but rather develop weaker interactions, due to the enhanced curvature of the substrate layers.

Basis Set Superposition Errors Are Partly Basis Set Imbalances

When calculating fragment interaction energies by electronic structure methods employing medium-sized atom-centered basis sets, it is often observed that the effect is systematically overestimated. The common interpretation is that the systematic error arises because the basis set for the complex is more complete than for the isolated fragments, and this is denoted basis set superposition errors. It has been observed, however, that the interaction energy in some cases is underestimated, which defies the interpretation in terms of basis set completeness, and instead suggests that the effect partly is due to basis set imbalance. The imbalance can be removed by explicit optimization of the basis sets for each structure, and it is shown that this to a significant extent reduces the systematic overestimation attributed to basis set superposition error.

Triiron Complex with N-Ferrocenyl Aminocarbyne Ligand Bridging a Diiron Core: DFT, Electrochemical, and Biological Insights

The first N-ferrocenyl aminocarbyne complex, [Fe2Cp2(CO)2(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(Fc)}]CF3SO3 ([2]CF3SO3), was synthesized with an 88% yield from [Fe2Cp2(CO)4], isocyanoferrocene (CNFc), and methyl triflate. The synthesis proceeded through the intermediate formation of [Fe2Cp2(CO)3(CNFc)], 1. Multinuclear NMR experiments revealed the presence of cis and trans isomers for [2]CF3SO3 in organic solvents, in agreement with DFT outcomes. Electrochemical and spectroelectrochemical studies demonstrated one reduction process occurring prevalently at the diiron core and one oxidation involving the ferrocenyl substituent. The oxidation process is expected to favor the redox activation of [2]+ in a biological environment. Both [2]CF3SO3 and its phenyl analogue [Fe2Cp2(CO)2(μ-CO){μ-CN(Me)(Ph)}]CF3SO3 ([3]CF3SO3), prepared for comparison, exerted moderate antiproliferative activity against the human cancer cell lines A431, HCT-15, PSN-1, 2008, and U1285. However, [2]CF3SO3 exhibited a higher cytotoxicity than [3]CF3SO3, showed a substantial ability to induce intracellular ROS production, and outperformed cisplatin in a three-dimensional SCLC cell model.

Solvent-mediated modification of thermodynamics and kinetics of monoethanolamine regeneration reaction in amine-stripping carbon capture: Computational chemistry study

A major limitation of amine-based post-combustion carbon capture technology is the necessity to regenerate amines at high temperatures, which dramatically increases operating costs. This paper concludes the effect of solvent choice as a possible route to modify the thermodynamics and kinetics characterizing the involved amine regeneration reactions and discusses whether these modifications can be economically beneficial. We report experimentally benchmarked computational chemistry calculations of monoethanolamine regeneration reactions employing aqueous and non-aqueous solvents with a wide range of dielectric constants. Unlike previous studies, our improved computational chemistry framework could accurately reproduce the right experimental activation energy of zwitterion formation. From the thermodynamics and kinetics of the predicted reactions, the use of non-aqueous solvents with small dielectric constants led to reductions in regeneration Gibbs free energies, activation barriers, and enthalpy changes. This can reduce energy consumption and give an opportunity to run desorption columns at relatively lower temperatures, thus offering the possibility of relying on low-grade waste heat as an energy input.

Towards routine organic structure determination using Raman microscopy

Raman microscopy can reveal a compound-specific vibrational "fingerprint" from micrograms of material with no sample preparation. We expect this increasingly available instrumentation to routinely assist synthetic chemists in structure determination; however, interpreting the information-dense spectra can be challenging for unreported compounds. Appropriate theoretical calculations using the highly efficient r2SCAN-3c method can accurately predict peak positions but are less precise in matching peak heights. To limit incorrect biases while comparing experimental and theoretical spectra, we introduce a user-friendly software that gives a match score to assist with structure determination. The capabilities and limitations of this approach are demonstrated for several proof-of-concept examples including the characterization of intermediates in the total synthesis of deoxyaspidodispermine.

Luminescent Behavior of Zn(II) and Mn(II) Halide Derivatives of 4-Phenyldinaphtho[2,1-d:1',2'-f][1,3,2]dioxaphosphepine 4-Oxide and Single-Crystal X-ray Structure Determination of the Ligand

The two enantiomers of chiral phosphonate 4-phenyldinaphtho[2,1-d:1',2'-f][1,3,2]dioxaphosphepine 4-oxide, O=PPh(BINOL), were synthesized from the proper 1,1'-bi-2-naphtol (BINOL) enantiomer and characterized. The structure of the (S)-enantiomer was elucidated by means of single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The reaction with anhydrous ZnBr2 afforded complexes having the general formula [ZnBr2{O=PPh(BINOL)}2] that showed intense fluorescence centered in the near-UV region rationalized on the basis of TD-DFT calculations. The corresponding Mn(II) complexes with the general formula [MnX2{O=PPh(BINOL)}2] (X = Cl, Br) exhibited dual emission upon excitation with UV light, with the relative intensity of the bands dependent upon the choice of the halide. The highest energy transition is comparable with that of the Zn(II) complex, while the lowest energy emission falls in the red region of the spectrum and is characterized by lifetimes in the hundreds of microseconds range. Although the emission at lower energy can also be achieved by direct excitation of the metal center, the luminescence decay curves suggest that the band in the red range is possibly derived from BINOL-centered excited states populated by intersystem crossing.

Synthesis, Characterization, and Single-Crystal X-ray Structures of Refractory Metal Compounds as Precursors for the Single-Source Chemical Vapor Deposition of Metal Nitrides

The chemical vapor deposition of refractory metal nitrides requires volatile precursors and has previously been achieved by using metal complexes containing a variety of imide ligands. Recently, the 1,4-di-tert-butyl-1,3-diazabutadiene (DAD) adduct of bis(tert-butylimide)dichloridemolybdenum(VI) was shown to be an excellent precursor for the single-source CVD of Mo2N thin films. Leveraging the success of this work, we prepared chromium and tungsten compounds with the same framework. Additionally, the framework has been modified slightly to allow the isolation of mono(tert-butylimide)trichloride complexes of vanadium, niobium, tantalum, and molybdenum(V) to extend the search for new vapor-phase precursors. These compounds were all fully characterized using the standard methods of multinuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, combustion analysis, and single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Their thermal properties were determined by using thermogravimetric analysis and differential scanning colorimetry to assess their utility as vapor-phase precursors. Finally, preliminary deposition studies were carried out to investigate their potential as single-source CVD precursors.

Investigating the Role of Odorant-Polymer Interactions in the Aroma Perception of Red Wine: A Density Functional Theory-Based Approach

The aroma of red wine results from the intricate interplay between aroma compounds (odorants) and complex polymers generated during fermentation. This study combines density functional theory (DFT), human sensory experiments, and nuclear magnetic resonance to investigate the impact of odorant-polymer interactions on wine aroma. Molecular aggregation patterns of odorants with polymer segments are identified, indicating the crucial role of intermolecular noncovalent interactions, such as hydrogen bonds and van der Waals interactions, in stabilizing odorant-polymer conformations. Certain odorants, including 3-isobutyl-2-methoxypyrazine and cis-whisky lactone, exhibit high binding affinity to specific polymer segments, such as (+)-catechin and p-coumaric acid, resulting in substantial changes in the perceived aroma. Their strong binding affinities correlate with changes in sensory experiments for binary mixtures. The results provide insights into the molecular mechanisms of odorant-polymer interactions in red wine with the potential of DFT calculations as a tool for predicting and tailoring red wine aroma.

Noncovalently bound excited-state dimers: a perspective on current time-dependent density functional theory approaches applied to aromatic excimer models

Excimers are supramolecular systems whose binding strength is influenced by many factors that are ongoing challenges for computational methods, such as charge transfer, exciton coupling, and London dispersion interactions. Treating the various intricacies of excimer binding at an adequate level is expected to be particularly challenging for time-dependent Density Functional Theory (TD-DFT) methods. In addition to well-known limitations for some TD-DFT methods in the description of charge transfer or exciton coupling, the inherent London dispersion problem from ground-state DFT translates to TD-DFT. While techniques to appropriately treat dispersion in DFT are well-developed for electronic ground states, these dispersion corrections remain largely untested for excited states. Herein, we aim to shed light on current TD-DFT methods, including some of the newest developments. The binding of four model excimers is studied across nine density functionals with and without the application of additive dispersion corrections against a wave function reference of SCS-CC2/CBS(3,4) quality, which approximates select CCSDR(3)/CBS data adequately. To our knowledge, this is the first study that presents single-reference wave function dissociation curves at the complete basis set level for the assessed model systems. It is also the first time range-separated double-hybrid density functionals are applied to excimers. In fact, those functionals turn out to be the most promising for the description of excimer binding followed by global double hybrids. Range-separated and global hybrids-particularly with large fractions of Fock exchange-are outperformed by double hybrids and yield worse dissociation energies and inter-molecular equilibrium distances. The deviation between each assessed functional and reference increases with system size, most likely due to missing dispersion interactions. Additive dispersion corrections of the DFT-D3(BJ) and DFT-D4 types reduce the average errors for TD-DFT methods but do so inconsistently and therefore do not offer a black-box solution in their ground-state parametrised form. The lack of appropriate description of dispersion effects for TD-DFT methods is likely hindering the practical application of the herein identified more efficient methods. Dispersion corrections parametrised for excited states appear to be an important next step to improve the applicability of TD-DFT methods and we hope that our work assists with the future development of such corrections.

Benchmarking Density Functional Theory Methods for Metalloenzyme Reactions: The Introduction of the MME55 Set

We present a new benchmark set of metalloenzyme model reaction energies and barrier heights that we call MME55. The set contains 10 different enzymes, representing eight transition metals, both open and closed shell systems, and system sizes of up to 116 atoms. We use four DLPNO-CCSD(T)-based approaches to calculate reference values against which we then benchmark the performance of a range of density functional approximations with and without dispersion corrections. Dispersion corrections improve the results across the board, and triple-ζ basis sets provide the best balance of efficiency and accuracy. Jacob's ladder is reproduced for the whole set based on averaged mean absolute (percent) deviations, with the double hybrids SOS0-PBE0-2-D3(BJ) and revDOD-PBEP86-D4 standing out as the most accurate methods for the MME55 set. The range-separated hybrids ωB97M-V and ωB97X-V also perform well here and can be recommended as a reliable compromise between accuracy and efficiency; they have already been shown to be robust across many other types of chemical problems, as well. Despite the popularity of B3LYP in computational enzymology, it is not a strong performer on our benchmark set, and we discourage its use for enzyme energetics.

Gas-Phase vs. Grain-Surface Formation of Interstellar Complex Organic Molecules: A Comprehensive Quantum-Chemical Study

Several organic chemical compounds (the so-called interstellar complex organic molecules, iCOMs) have been identified in the interstellar medium (ISM). Examples of iCOMs are formamide (HCONH2), acetaldehyde (CH3CHO), methyl formate (CH3OCHO), or formic acid (HCOOH). iCOMs can serve as precursors of other organic molecules of enhanced complexity, and hence they are key species in chemical evolution in the ISM. The formation of iCOMs is still a subject of a vivid debate, in which gas-phase or grain-surface syntheses have been postulated. In this study, we investigate the grain-surface-formation pathways for the four above-mentioned iCOMs by transferring their primary gas-phase synthetic routes onto water ice surfaces. Our objective is twofold: (i) to identify potential grain-surface-reaction mechanisms leading to the formation of these iCOMs, and (ii) to decipher either parallelisms or disparities between the gas-phase and the grain-surface reactions. Results obtained indicate that the presence of the icy surface modifies the energetic features of the reactions compared to the gas-phase scenario, by increasing some of the energy barriers. Therefore, the investigated gas-phase mechanisms seem unlikely to occur on the icy grains, highlighting the distinctiveness between the gas-phase and the grain-surface chemistry.

Exploration of the Conformational Scenario for α-, β-, and γ-Cyclodextrins in Dry and Wet Conditions, from Monomers to Crystal Structures: A Quantum-Mechanical Study

Cyclodextrins (CDs) constitute a class of cyclic oligosaccharides that are well recognized and largely applied in the drug delivery field, thanks to their biocompatibility, low cost, and the possibility to be derivatized in order to tune and optimize the complexation/release of the specific drug. The conformational flexibility of these systems is one of their key properties and requires a cost-effective methodology to be studied by combining the accuracy of results with the possibility of exploring a large set of conformations. In the present paper, we have explored the conformational potential energy surface of the monomers and dimers of α-, β-, and γ-cyclodextrins (i.e., 6, 7, and 8 monomeric units, respectively) by means of fast but accurate semiempirical methods, which are then refined by state-of-the-art DFT functionals. Moreover, the crystal structure is considered for a more suitable comparison with the IR spectrum experimentally recorded. Calculations are carried out in the gas phase and in water environments, applying both implicit and explicit treatments. We show that the conformation of the studied molecules changes from the gas phase to the water, even if treated implicitly, thus modifying their complexation capability.

Deposition products predicted from conceptual DFT: The hydrolysis reactions of MoF6, WF6, and UF6

Metal hexafluorides hydrolyze at ambient temperature to deposit compounds having fluorine-to-oxygen ratios that depend upon the identity of the metal. Uranium-hexafluoride hydrolysis, for example, deposits uranyl fluoride (UO2F2), whereas molybdenum hexafluoride (MoF6) and tungsten hexafluoride deposit trioxides. Here, we pursue general strategies enabling the prediction of depositing compounds resulting from multi-step gas-phase reactions. To compare among the three metal-hexafluoride hydrolyses, we first investigate the mechanism of MoF6 hydrolysis using hybrid density functional theory (DFT). Intermediates are then validated by performing anharmonic vibrational simulations and comparing with infrared spectra [McNamara et al., Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 25, 2990 (2023)]. Conceptual DFT, which is leveraged here to quantitatively evaluate site-specific electrophilicity and nucleophilicity metrics, is found to reliably predict qualitative deposition propensities for each intermediate. In addition to the nucleophilic potential of the oxygen ligands, several other contributing characteristics are discussed, including amphoterism, polyvalency, fluxionality, steric hindrance, dipolar strength, and solubility. To investigate the structure and composition of pre-nucleation clusters, an automated workflow is presented for the simulation of particle growth. The workflow entails a conformer search at the density functional tight-binding level, structural refinement at the hybrid DFT level, and computation of a composite free-energy profile. Such profiles can be used to estimate particle nucleation kinetics. Droplet formation is also considered, which helps to rationalize the different UO2F2 particle morphologies observed under varying levels of humidity. Development of predictive methods for simulating physical and chemical deposition processes is important for the advancement of material manufacturing involving coatings and thin films.

Halide Complexes of 5,6-Dicyano-2,1,3-Benzoselenadiazole with 1 : 4 Stoichiometry: Cooperativity between Chalcogen and Hydrogen Bonding

The [M4 -Hal]- (M=the title compound; Hal=Cl, Br, and I) complexes were isolated in the form of salts of [Et4 N]+ cation and characterized by XRD, NMR, UV-Vis, DFT, QTAIM, EDD, and EDA. Their stoichiometry is caused by a cooperative interplay of σ-hole-driven chalcogen (ChB) and hydrogen (HB) bondings. In the crystal, [M4 -Hal]- are connected by the π-hole-driven ChB; overall, each [Hal]- is six-coordinated. In the ChB, the electrostatic interaction dominates over orbital and dispersion interactions. In UV-Vis spectra of the M+[Hal]- solutions, ChB-typical and [Hal]- -dependent charge-transfer bands are present; they reflect orbital interactions and allow identification of the individual [Hal]- . However, the structural situation in the solutions is not entirely clear. Particularly, the UV-Vis spectra of the solutions are different from the solid-state spectra of the [Et4 N]+ [M4 -Hal]- ; very tentatively, species in the solutions are assigned [M-Hal]- . It is supposed that the formation of the [M4 -Hal]- proceeds during the crystallization of the [Et4 N]+ [M4 -Hal]- . Overall, M can be considered as a chromogenic receptor and prototype sensor of [Hal]- . The findings are also useful for crystal engineering and supramolecular chemistry.

N-Indolyl diiron vinyliminium complexes exhibit antiproliferative effects in cancer cells associated with disruption of mitochondrial homeostasis, ROS scavenging, and antioxidant activity

The indole scaffold has been established as a key organic moiety for developing new drugs; on the other hand, a range of diiron bis-cyclopentadienyl complexes have recently emerged for their promising anticancer potential. Here, we report the synthesis of novel diiron complexes with an indole-functionalized vinyliminium ligand (2-5) and an indole-lacking analogue for comparative purposes (6), which were characterized by analytical and spectroscopic techniques. Complexes 2-6 are substantially stable in DMSO‑d6 and DMEM-d solutions at 37 °C (8% average degradation after 48 h) and display a balanced hydrophilic/lipophilic behaviour (LogPow values in the range -0.32 to 0.47), associated with appreciable water solubility. The complexes display selective antiproliferative potency towards several cancer cells in monolayer cultures, mainly in the low micromolar range, with reduced toxicity towards noncancerous epithelial cells. Thus, the cytotoxicity of the complexes is comparable to or better than clinically used metallopharmaceutical cisplatin. Comparing the antiproliferative activity obtained for complexes containing different ligands, we confirmed the importance of the indolyl group in the mechanism of antiproliferative activity of these complexes. Cell-based mechanistic studies suggest that the investigated diiron vinyliminium complexes (DVCs) show cytostatic rather than cytotoxic effects and subsequently induce a population of cells to undergo apoptosis. Furthermore, the molecular mechanism of action involves interactions with mitochondrial DNA and proteins, the reactive oxygen species (ROS)-scavenging properties and antioxidant activity of these complexes in cancer cells. This study highlights the importance of DVCs to their cancer cell activity and reinforces their prospective therapeutic potential as anticancer agents.

A transferable quantum mechanical energy model for intermolecular interactions using a single empirical parameter

The calculation of intermolecular interactions in molecular crystals using model energies provides a unified route to understanding the complex interplay of driving forces in crystallization, elastic properties and more. Presented here is a new single-parameter interaction energy model (CE-1p), extending the previous CrystalExplorer energy model and calibrated using density functional theory (DFT) calculations at the ωB97M-V/def2-QZVP level over 1157 intermolecular interactions from 147 crystal structures. The new model incorporates an improved treatment of dispersion interactions and polarizabilities using the exchange-hole dipole model (XDM), along with the use of effective core potentials (ECPs), facilitating application to molecules containing elements across the periodic table (from H to Rn). This new model is validated against high-level reference data with outstanding performance, comparable to state-of-the-art DFT methods for molecular crystal lattice energies over the X23 set (mean absolute deviation 3.6 kJ mol-1) and for intermolecular interactions in the S66x8 benchmark set (root mean-square deviation 3.3 kJ mol-1). The performance of this model is further examined compared to the GFN2-xTB tight-binding model, providing recommendations for the evaluation of intermolecular interactions in molecular crystal systems.

Amphoteric dissolution of two-dimensional polytriazine imide carbon nitrides in water

Crystalline two-dimensional carbon nitrides with polytriazine imide (PTI) structure are shown to act amphoterically, buffering both HCl and NaOH aqueous solutions, resulting in charged PTI layers that dissolve spontaneously in their aqueous media, particularly for the alkaline solutions. This provides a low energy, green route to their scalable solution processing. Protonation in acid is shown to occur at pyridinic nitrogens, stabilized by adjacent triazines, whereas deprotonation in base occurs primarily at basal plane NH bridges, although NH2 edge deprotonation is competitive. We conclude that mildly acidic or basic pHs are necessary to provide sufficient net charge on the nanosheets to promote dissolution, while avoiding high ion concentrations which screen the repulsion of like-charged PTI sheets in solution. CRYSTAL23: A Program for Computational Solid State Physics and Chemistry

The Crystal program for quantum-mechanical simulations of materials has been bridging the realm of molecular quantum chemistry to the realm of solid state physics for many years, since its first public version released back in 1988. This peculiarity stems from the use of atom-centered basis functions within a linear combination of atomic orbitals (LCAO) approach and from the corresponding efficiency in the evaluation of the exact Fock exchange series. In particular, this has led to the implementation of a rich variety of hybrid density functional approximations since 1998. Nowadays, it is acknowledged by a broad community of solid state chemists and physicists that the inclusion of a fraction of Fock exchange in the exchange-correlation potential of the density functional theory is key to a better description of many properties of materials (electronic, magnetic, mechanical, spintronic, lattice-dynamical, etc.). Here, the main developments made to the program in the last five years (i.e., since the previous release, Crystal17) are presented and some of their most noteworthy applications reviewed.

Activation of the GaI Cation for Bond Activation: from Oxidative Additions into C-Cl and H-P Bonds to Reversible Insertion into P4

Although the discovery of the GaI complex salt [Ga(PhF)2-3 ][Al(ORF )4 ] (RF =C(CF3 )3 , PhF=C6 H5 F) invoked the preparation of a diverse library of cationic Ga(I) coordination complexes and clusters, studies on small molecule activation with low-valent GaI cations are scarce. Herein, a first experimental study on the reactivity of a monomeric Ga(I) cation activated with a pyridine-diimine pincer ligand (in [Ga(PDIdipp )][Al(ORF )4 ]) towards small-molecules is reported. First controlled oxidative additions of the GaI cation into C-Cl, H-P and P-P bonds are presented. Moreover, the [4+1]cycloaddition to butadienes was achieved. Intriguingly, the isolated, blue insertion product into the P-P bond of P4 allows for the quantitative release of the P4 molecule upon reaction with AlEt3 and butadienes. Reversible P4 insertion of main-group metals has previously been reported for Ge and Sn, respectively. The experimental study is supported by high-level computational analysis of the in-part reversible oxidative additions at the DLPNO-CCSD(T)/def2-TZVPP//PBEh-3c/def2-mSVP level of theory with COSMO-RS solvation in 1,2-difluorobenzene.

Diiminium Nucleophile Adducts Are Stable and Convenient Strong Lewis Acids

Strong Lewis acids are essential tools for manifold chemical procedures, but their scalable deployment is limited by their costs and safety concerns. We report a scalable, convenient, and inexpensive synthesis of stable diiminium-based reagents with a Lewis acidic carbon centre. Coordination with pyridine donors stabilises these centres; the 2,2'-bipyridine adduct shows a chelation effect at carbon. Due to high fluoride, hydride, and oxide affinities, the diiminium pyridine adducts are promising soft and hard Lewis acids. They effectively produce acylpyridinium salts from carboxylates that can acylate amines to give amides and imides even from electronically intractable coupling partners.

Exploring π-π interactions and electron transport in complexes involving a hexacationic host and PAH guest: a promising avenue for molecular devices

Single isolated molecules and supramolecular host-guest systems, which consist of π-π stacking interactions, are emerging as promising building blocks for creating molecular electronic devices. In this article, we have investigated the noncovalent π-π interaction and intermolecular electron charge transport involved in a series of host-guest complexes formed between a cage-like host (H6+) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) guests (G1-G7) using different quantum chemical approaches. The host (H6+) consists of two triscationic π-electron-deficient trispyridiniumtriazine (TPZ3+) units that are bridged face-to-face by three ethylene-triazole-ethylene. Our theoretical calculations show that the perylene and naphthalene inclusion complexes G7⊂H and G1⊂H have the highest and lowest interaction energies, respectively. In addition, energy decomposition analysis (EDA) indicated that the dispersion interaction term, ΔEdisp, significantly contributes to the host-guest interaction and is correlated with the existence of π-π van der Waals interaction. Using the nonequilibrium Greens function (NEGF) method in combination with density functional theory (DFT), the current-voltage (I-V) curves of the complexes were estimated. The conductance values increased when the guests were embedded inside the host cavity. Notably, the complex G7⊂H has the maximum conductance value. Overall, this study provided the electron transport of the PAH inclusion host-guest complex through π-π interaction and provided a direction for the fabrication of future supramolecular molecular devices.

The Role of Water in the Adsorption of Nitro-Organic Pollutants on Activated Carbon

The density functional theory (DFT) is applied to theoretically study the capture and storage of three different nitro polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, 4-nitrophenol, 2-nitrophenol, and 9-nitroanthracene by activated carbon, with and without the presence of water. These species are pollutants derived from vehicle and industry emissions. The modeling of adsorption is carried out at the molecular level using a high-level density functional theory with the B3LYP-GD(BJ)/6-31+G(d,p) level of theory. The adsorption energies of polluting gases considered isolated and in a humid environment are compared to better understand the role of water. The calculations reveal different possible pathways involving the formation of chemical bonds between adsorbent and adsorbate on the formation of intermolecular van der Waals interactions. The negative adsorption energy on AC for the three species is obtained when they are treated individually and in mixture with H2O. The basis-set superposition error, estimated using the counterpoise correction, varies the adsorption energies by 2-13%. Dispersion effects were also taken into account. The adsorption energy ranges from -10 to -414 kJ/mol suggesting a diversity of pathways. The resulting analysis suggests three preferred pathways for capture. The main pathway is physical interaction due to π-π stacking. Other means are capture due to the formation of hydrogen bonds resulting from water adsorbed on the surface and the simultaneous adsorption of pollutant and water where water can act as a link that promotes adsorption. The thermodynamic properties give a clue to the most eco-friendly approaches for molecular adsorption.
