Radiative decay of multiply excited core hole states in H2O

Satellite-Dominated Sulfur L2,3 X-ray Emission of Alkaline Earth Metal Sulfides

The sulfur L_2,3 X-ray emission spectra of the alkaline earth metal sulfides BeS, MgS, CaS, SrS, and BaS are investigated and compared with spectra calculations based on density functional theory. Very distinct spectral shapes are found for the different compounds. With decreasing electronegativity of the cation, that is, increasing ionic bonding character, the upper valence band width and its relative spectral intensity decrease. These general trends are qualitatively reproduced by the spectra calculations, which give quite an accurate description of the spectral shapes in the upper valence band region. On the low energy side of the sulfur 3s → 2p transition dominating the spectra, we find strong satellites caused by "semi-Auger" decays involving configuration interaction. These satellites, previously believed to be energetically forbidden for sulfur L_2,3 emission and only observed for the L_2,3 emission of Cl to Cr, increase in intensity as the bonding character becomes more ionic and dominate the spectra for SrS and BaS. The intensities, energies, and widths of the satellites vary strongly between the investigated compounds, giving a very specific spectral fingerprint that can be used for speciation analysis.

Calculation of reliable non-resonant Kα X-ray emission spectra of organic molecules and other small molecules

For reliable calculation of vertical ionization energies (VIEs) of both core and valence electrons of gas-phase organic molecules and other small molecules, we developed DFT procedures in 1999 and 2009. The difference between core and valence VIEs give the energies for X-ray emission spectra (XES). The dipole matrix elements between core and valence electrons required for calculation of the XES intensities are now easily available. The simple procedure for calculation of reliable XES is demonstrated by comparison with known XES for H2O(g), NH3(g), CO(g), CO2(g), N2(g), and NNO(g). Consequently, the XES of H2CO(g), formamide(g), 1-nitrosamine(g), N-methylformamide(g), 1-nitrosoaziridine(g), and oxirane(g) are predicted with confidence.

Observation of Double Excitations in the Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering of Nitric Oxide

The nitrogen K-edge resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) map of nitric oxide (NO) has been measured and simulated to provide a detailed analysis of the observed features. High-resolution experimental RIXS maps were collected using an in situ gas flow cell and a high-transmission soft X-ray spectrometer. Accurate descriptions of the ground, excited, and core-excited states are based upon restricted active space self-consistent-field calculations using second order multiconfigurational perturbation theory. The nitrogen K-edge RIXS map of NO shows a range of features that can be assigned to intermediate states arising from 1s → π* and 1s → Rydberg excitations; additional bands are attributed to doubly excited intermediate states comprising 1s → π* and π → π* excitations. These results provide a detailed picture of RIXS for an open-shell molecule and an extensive description of the core-excited electronic structure of NO, an important molecule in many chemical and biological processes.

X-ray and Electron Spectroscopy of Water

Here we present an overview of recent developments of X-ray and electron spectroscopy to probe water at different temperatures. Photon-induced ionization followed by detection of electrons from either the O 1s level or the valence band is the basis of photoelectron spectroscopy. Excitation between the O 1s and the unoccupied states or occupied states is utilized in X-ray absorption and X-ray emission spectroscopies. These techniques probe the electronic structure of the liquid phase and show sensitivity to the local hydrogen-bonding structure. Both experimental aspects related to the measurements and theoretical simulations to assist in the interpretation are discussed in detail. Different model systems are presented such as the different bulk phases of ice and various adsorbed monolayer structures on metal surfaces.

Setup for in situ investigation of gases and gas/solid interfaces by soft x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy

We present a novel gas cell designed to study the electronic structure of gases and gas/solid interfaces using soft x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopies. In this cell, the sample gas is separated from the vacuum of the analysis chamber by a thin window membrane, allowing in situ measurements under atmospheric pressure. The temperature of the gas can be regulated from room temperature up to approximately 600 °C. To avoid beam damage, a constant mass flow can be maintained to continuously refresh the gaseous sample. Furthermore, the gas cell provides space for solid-state samples, allowing to study the gas/solid interface for surface catalytic reactions at elevated temperatures. To demonstrate the capabilities of the cell, we have investigated a TiO2 sample behind a mixture of N2 and He gas at atmospheric pressure.

System for in situ studies of atmospheric corrosion of metal films using soft x-ray spectroscopy and quartz crystal microbalance

We present a versatile chamber ("atmospheric corrosion cell") for soft x-ray absorption/emission spectroscopy of metal surfaces in a corrosive atmosphere allowing novel in situ electronic structure studies. Synchrotron x rays passing through a thin window separating the corrosion cell interior from a beamline vacuum chamber probe a metal film deposited on a quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) or on the inside of the window. We present some initial results on chloride induced corrosion of iron surfaces in humidified synthetic air. By simultaneous recording of QCM signal and soft x-ray emission from the corroding sample, correlation between mass changes and variations in spectral features is facilitated.

X-ray emission spectroscopy of hydrogen bonding and electronic structure of liquid water

We use x-ray emission spectroscopy to examine the influence of the intermolecular interaction on the local electronic structure of liquid water. By comparing x-ray emission spectra of the water molecule and liquid water, we find a strong involvement of the a(1)-symmetry valence-orbital in the hydrogen bonding. The local electronic structure of water molecules, where one hydrogen bond is broken at the hydrogen site, is separately determined. Our results provide an illustration of the important potential of x-ray emission spectroscopy for elucidating basic features of liquids.
