Abstract
A multireference generalization of the partitioning introduced recently by Knowles (J. Chem. Phys. 2022 156, 011101) is presented with the aim to study electronic systems at a medium level of correlation. The multireference formalism applied is the general framework of multiconfiguration perturbation theory (MCPT).

Abstract
In this work, we combine the many-body formulation of the internally contracted multireference coupled cluster (ic-MRCC) method with Evangelista's multireference formulation of the driven similarity renormalization group (DSRG). The DSRG method can be viewed as a unitary multireference coupled cluster theory, which renormalizes the amplitudes based on a flow equation approach to eliminate numerical instabilities. We extend this approach by demonstrating that the unitary flow equation approach can be adapted for nonunitary transformations, rationalizing the renormalization of ic-MRCC amplitudes. We denote the new approach, the renormalized ic-MRCC (ric-MRCC) method. To achieve high accuracy with a reasonable computational cost, we introduce a new approximation to the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff expansion. We fully consider the linear commutator while approximating the quadratic commutator, for which we neglect specific contractions involving amplitudes with active indices. Moreover, we introduce approximate perturbative triples to obtain the ric-MRCCSD[T] method. We demonstrate the accuracy of our approaches in comparison to advanced multireference methods for the potential energy curves of H8, F2, H2O, N2, and Cr2. Additionally, we show that ric-MRCCSD and ric-MRCSSD[T] match the accuracy of CCSD(T) for evaluating spectroscopic constants and of full configuration interaction energies for a set of small molecules.

Abstract
We study the combination of orbital-optimized density cumulant theory and a new parameterization of reduced density matrices in which the variables are the particle-hole cumulant elements. We call this combination OλDCT. We find that this new Ansatz solves problems identified in the previous unitary coupled cluster Ansatz for density cumulant theory: the theory is now free of near-zero denominators between occupied and virtual blocks, can correctly describe the dissociation of H2, and is rigorously size-extensive. In addition, the new Ansatz has fewer terms than the previous unitary Ansatz, and the optimal orbitals delivered by the exact theory are the natural orbitals. Numerical studies on systems amenable to full configuration interaction show that the amplitudes from the previous ODC-12 method approximate the exact amplitudes predicted by this Ansatz. Studies on equilibrium properties of diatomic molecules show that even with the new Ansatz, it is necessary to include triples to improve the accuracy of the method compared to orbital-optimized linearized coupled cluster doubles. With a simple iterative triples correction, OλDCT outperforms other orbital-optimized methods truncated at comparable levels in the amplitudes, as well as coupled cluster single and doubles with perturbative triples [CCSD(T)]. By adding four more terms to the cumulant parameterization, OλDCT outperforms CCSDT while having the same O(V5O3) scaling.

Abstract
The development of a quadratic unitary coupled-cluster singles and doubles (qUCCSD) based self-consistent polarization propagator method is reported. We present a simple strategy for truncating the commutator expansion of the unitary version of coupled-cluster transformed Hamiltonian H̄. The qUCCSD method for the electronic ground state includes up to double commutators for the amplitude equations and up to cubic commutators for the energy expression. The qUCCSD excited-state eigenvalue equations include up to double commutators for the singles-singles block of H̄, single commutators for the singles-doubles and doubles-singles blocks, and the bare Hamiltonian for the doubles-doubles block. Benchmark qUCCSD calculations of the ground-state properties and excitation energies for representative molecules demonstrate significant improvement of the accuracy and robustness over the previous UCC3 scheme derived using Møller-Plesset perturbation theory.

Abstract
We present an implementation and benchmark of new approximations in multireference algebraic diagrammatic construction theory for simulations of neutral electronic excitations and UV/vis spectra of strongly correlated molecular systems (MR-ADC). Following our work on the first-order MR-ADC approximation [J. Chem. Phys. 2018, 149, 204113], we report the strict and extended second-order MR-ADC methods (MR-ADC(2) and MR-ADC(2)-X) that combine the description of static and dynamic electron correlation in the ground and excited electronic states without relying on state-averaged reference wave functions. We present an extensive benchmark of the new MR-ADC methods for excited states in several small molecules, including the carbon dimer, ethylene, and butadiene. Our results demonstrate that, for weakly correlated electronic states, the MR-ADC(2) and MR-ADC(2)-X methods outperform the third-order single-reference ADC approximation and are competitive with the results from equation-of-motion coupled cluster theory. For states with multireference character, the performance of the MR-ADC methods is similar to that of an N-electron valence perturbation theory. In contrast to conventional multireference perturbation theories, the MR-ADC methods have many attractive features, such as a straightforward and efficient calculation of excited-state properties and a direct access to excitations outside of the frontier (active) orbitals.

Abstract
The Unitary Group Adapted State-Specific Multi-Reference Perturbation Theory (UGA-SSMRPT2) developed by Mukherjee et al. [J. Comput. Chem. 36, 670 (2015)] has successfully realized the goal of studying bond dissociation in a numerically stable, spin-preserving, and size-consistent manner. We explore and analyze here the efficacy of the UGA-SSMRPT2 theory in the description of the avoided crossings and interlacings between a manifold of potential energy curves for states belonging to the same space-spin symmetry. Three different aspects of UGA-SSMRPT2 have been studied: (a) We introduce and develop the most rigorous version of UGA-SSMRPT2 that emerges from the rigorous version of UGA-SSMRCC utilizing a linearly independent virtual manifold; we call this the "projection" version of UGA-SSMRPT2 (UGA-SSMRPT2 scheme P). We compare and contrast this approach with our earlier formulation that used extra sufficiency conditions via amplitude equations (UGA-SSMRPT2 scheme A). (b) We present the results for a variety of electronic states of a set of molecules, which display the striking accuracy of both the two versions of UGA-SSMRPT2 with respect to three different situations involving weakly avoided crossings, moderate/strongly avoided crossings, and interlacing in a manifold of potential energy curves (PECs) of the same symmetry. Accuracy of our results has been benchmarked against IC-MRCISD + Q.

Abstract
The previously proposed Ansatz for density cumulant theory that combines orbital-optimization and a parameterization of the 2-electron reduced density matrix cumulant in terms of unitary coupled cluster amplitudes (OUDCT) is carefully examined. Formally, we elucidate the relationship between OUDCT and orbital-optimized unitary coupled cluster theory and show the existence of near-zero denominators in the stationarity conditions for both the exact and some approximate OUDCT methods. We implement methods of the OUDCT Ansatz restricted to double excitations for numerical study, up to the fifth commutator in the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff expansion. We find that methods derived from the Ansatz beyond the previously known ODC-12 method tend to be less accurate for equilibrium properties and less reliable when attempting to describe H2 dissociation. New developments are needed to formulate more accurate density cumulant theory variants.

Abstract
A ring approximation within an internally contracted multireference (MR) Coupled Cluster (CC) framework is worked out and tested. Derivation of equations utilizes MR based, generalized normal ordering and the corresponding generalized Wick-theorem (MR-GWT). Contractions among cluster operators are avoided by adopting a normal ordered exponential ansatz. The original version of the MR ring CC doubles (MR-rCCD) equations [Á. Szabados and Á. Margócsy, Mol. Phys. 115, 2731 (2017)] is rectified in two aspects. On the one hand, over-completeness of double excitations is treated by relying on the concept of frames. On the other hand, restriction on the maximal cumulant rank is lifted from two to four. This is found essential for obtaining reliable correlation corrections to the energy. The MR function underlying the approach is provided by the Generalized Valence Bond (GVB) model. The pair structure of the reference ensures a fragment structure of GVB cumulants. This represents a benefit when evaluating cumulant contractions appearing as a consequence of MR-GWT. In particular, cumulant involving terms remain less expensive than their traditional, pair-contracted counterpart, facilitating an O(N6) eventual scaling of the proposed MR-rCCD method. Pilot applications are presented for covalent bond breaking, deprotonation energies, and torsional potentials.

Abstract
This study examines several techniques to improve the efficiency of the linearized multireference driven similarity renormalization group truncated to one- and two-body operators [MR-LDSRG(2)]. We propose a sequential MR-LDSRG(2) [sq-MR-LDSRG(2)] scheme, in which one-body substitutions are folded exactly into the Hamiltonian. This new approach is combined with density fitting (DF) to reduce the storage cost of two-electron integrals. To further avoid storage of large four-index intermediates, we propose a noninteracting virtual orbital (NIVO) approximation of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff series that neglects commutators terms with three and four virtual indices. The NIVO approximation reduces the computational prefactor of the MR-LDSRG(2), bringing it closer to that of coupled cluster with singles and doubles (CCSD). We test the effect of the DF and NIVO approximations on the MR-LDSRG(2) and sq-MR-LDSRG(2) methods by computing properties of eight diatomic molecules. The diatomic constants obtained by DF-sq-MR-LDSRG(2)+NIVO are found to be as accurate as those from the original MR-LDSRG(2) and coupled cluster theory with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples. Finally, we demonstrate that the DF-sq-MR-LDSRG(2)+NIVO scheme can be applied to chemical systems with more than 550 basis functions by computing the automerization energy of cyclobutadiene with a quintuple-ζ basis set. The predicted automerization energy is found to be similar to the value computed with Mukherjee's state-specific multireference coupled cluster theory with singles and doubles.

Abstract
The Hartree-Fock problem was recently recast as a semidefinite optimization over the space of rank-constrained two-body reduced-density matrices (RDMs) [ Phys. Rev. A 2014 , 89 , 010502(R) ]. This formulation of the problem transfers the nonconvexity of the Hartree-Fock energy functional to the rank constraint on the two-body RDM. We consider an equivalent optimization over the space of positive semidefinite one-electron RDMs (1-RDMs) that retains the nonconvexity of the Hartree-Fock energy expression. The optimized 1-RDM satisfies ensemble N-representability conditions, and ensemble spin-state conditions may be imposed as well. The spin-state conditions place additional linear and nonlinear constraints on the 1-RDM. We apply this RDM-based approach to several molecular systems and explore its spatial (point group) and spin ( Ŝ2 and Ŝ3) symmetry breaking properties. When imposing Ŝ2 and Ŝ3 symmetry but relaxing point group symmetry, the procedure often locates spatial-symmetry-broken solutions that are difficult to identify using standard algorithms. For example, the RDM-based approach yields a smooth, spatial-symmetry-broken potential energy curve for the well-known Be-H2 insertion pathway. We also demonstrate numerically that, upon relaxation of Ŝ2 and Ŝ3 symmetry constraints, the RDM-based approach is equivalent to real-valued generalized Hartree-Fock theory.

Abstract
Applications of the multireference linearized coupled-cluster single-doubles (MRLCCSD) to atomic and molecular systems have been carried out. MRLCCSD is exploited to calculate the ground-state energies of HF, H2O, NH3, CH4, N2, BF, and C2with basis sets, cc-pVDZ, cc-pVTZ and cc-pVQZ. The equilibrium bond lengths and vibration frequencies of HF, HCl, Li2, LiH, LiF, LiBr, BH, and AlF are computed with MRLCCSD and compared with the experimental data. The electron affinities of F and CH as well as the proton affinities of H2O and NH3are also calculated with MRLCCSD. These results are compared with the results produced with second-order perturbation theory, linearized coupled-cluster doubles (LCCD), coupled-cluster doubles (CCD), coupled-cluster singles and doubles (CCSD), CCSD with perturbative triples correction (CCSD(T)). It is shown that all results obtained with MRLCCSD are reliable and accurate.

Abstract
We report an efficient implementation of a second-order multireference perturbation theory based on the driven similarity renormalization group (DSRG-MRPT2) [C. Li and F. A. Evangelista, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 11, 2097 (2015)]. Our implementation employs factorized two-electron integrals to avoid storage of large four-index intermediates. It also exploits the block structure of the reference density matrices to reduce the computational cost to that of second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory. Our new DSRG-MRPT2 implementation is benchmarked on ten naphthyne isomers using basis sets up to quintuple-ζ quality. We find that the singlet-triplet splittings (ΔST) of the naphthyne isomers strongly depend on the equilibrium structures. For a consistent set of geometries, the ΔST values predicted by the DSRG-MRPT2 are in good agreements with those computed by the reduced multireference coupled cluster theory with singles, doubles, and perturbative triples.

Abstract
The first nonperturbative version of the multireference driven similarity renormalization group (MR-DSRG) theory [C. Li and F. A. Evangelista, J. Chem. Theory Comput. 11, 2097 (2015)] is introduced. The renormalization group structure of the MR-DSRG equations ensures numerical robustness and avoidance of the intruder-state problem, while the connected nature of the amplitude and energy equations guarantees size consistency and extensivity. We approximate the MR-DSRG equations by keeping only one- and two-body operators and using a linearized recursive commutator approximation of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff expansion [T. Yanai and G. K.-L. Chan, J. Chem. Phys. 124, 194106 (2006)]. The resulting linearized MR-DSRG scheme with one- and two-body operators [MR-LDSRG(2)] contains only 39 terms and scales as O(N(2)NP (2)NH (2)) where NH, NP, and N correspond to the number of hole, particle, and total orbitals, respectively. Benchmark MR-LDSRG(2) computations on the hydrogen fluoride and molecular nitrogen binding curves and the singlet-triplet splitting of p-benzyne yield results comparable in accuracy to those from multireference configuration interaction, Mukherjee multireference coupled cluster theory, and internally contracted multireference coupled cluster theory.

Abstract
Using the formulas and techniques developed in Papers I and II of this series, the recently developed second-order perturbation theory based on a valence bond self-consistent field reference function (VBPT2) has been extended by using the internally contracted correction wave function. This ansatz strongly reduces the size of the interaction space compared to the uncontracted wave function and thus improves the capability of the VBPT2 method dramatically. Test calculations show that internally contracted VBPT2 using only a small number of reference valence bond functions, can give results as accuracy as the VBPT2 method and other more sophisticated methods such as full configuration interaction and multireference configuration interaction.
