Electron impact ionization of the hydroxyl radical

Chemistry in glow discharges of H2 / O2 mixtures. Diagnostics and modelling

The chemistry of low pressure H2 + O2 discharges with different mixture ratios has been studied in a hollow cathode DC reactor. Neutral and positive ion distributions have been measured by mass spectrometry, and Langmuir probes have been used to provide charge densities and electron temperatures. A simple zero order kinetic model including neutral species and positive and negative ions, which takes into account gas-phase and heterogeneous chemistry, has been used to reproduce the global composition of the plasmas over the whole range of mixtures experimentally studied, and allows for the identification of the main physicochemical mechanisms that may explain the experimental results. To our knowledge, no combined experimental and modelling studies of the heavy species kinetics of low pressure H2 + O2 plasmas including ions has been reported before. As expected, apart from the precursors, H2O is detected in considerable amounts. The model also predicts appreciable concentrations of H and O atoms and the OH radical. The relevance of the metastable species O(1D) and O2(a1Δg) is analysed. Concerning the charged species, positive ion distributions are dominated by H3O+ for a wide range of intermediate mixtures, while H3+ and O2+ are the major ions for the higher and lower H2/O2 ratios, respectively. The mixed ions OH+, H2O+ and HO2+ are also observed in small amounts. Negative ions are shown to have a limited relevance in the global chemistry; their main contribution is the reduction of the electron density available for electron impact processes.

Gas-phase kinetics of the hydroxyl radical reaction with allene: absolute rate measurements at low temperature, product determinations, and calculations

The gas phase reaction of the hydroxyl radical with allene has been studied theoretically and experimentally in a continuous supersonic flow reactor over the range 50 ≤ T/K ≤ 224. This reaction has been found to exhibit a negative temperature dependence over the entire temperature range investigated, varying between (0.75 and 5.0) × 10(-11) cm(3) molecule(-1) s(-1). Product formation from the reaction of OH and OD radicals with allene (C(3)H(4)) has been investigated in a fast flow reactor through time-of-flight mass spectrometry, at pressures between 0.8 and 2.4 Torr. The branching ratios for adduct formation (C(3)H(4)OH) in this pressure range are found to be equal to 34 ± 16% and 48 ± 16% for the OH and OD + allene reactions, respectively, the only other channel being the formation of CH(3) or CH(2)D + H(2)CCO (ketene). Moreover, the rate constant for the OD + C(3)H(4) reaction is also found to be 1.4 times faster than the rate constant for the OH + C(3)H(4) reaction at 1.5 Torr and at 298 K. The experimental results and implications for atmospheric chemistry have been rationalized by quantum chemical and RRKM calculations.

Scaled Born cross sections for excitations of H2 by electron impact

This article describes the scaling of plane-wave Born cross sections for the excitation of the H(2) molecule to four low-lying electronic states (B (1)Sigma(u) (+), C (1)Pi(u), B(') (1)Sigma(u) (+), and D (1)Pi(u)) by electron impact. The same BE and BEf scaling methods used on atoms were found to be equally effective for H(2) in converting Born cross sections into cross sections in good agreement with available experiments. These scaling methods are applicable only to dipole-allowed excitations. The possibility of using these scaling methods, as was done in atoms, to estimate the contribution of inner-shell excitations to the total ionization cross section via the excitation-autoionization mechanism is discussed, though this type of indirect ionization in molecules is not as common as in atoms.

Total, partial, and electron-capture cross sections for ionization of water vapor by 20-150 keV protons

We present experimental results for proton ionization of water molecules based on a novel event by event analysis of the different ions produced (and lost). We are able to obtain mass analyzed product ion signals (e.g., H2O+, OH+, O+, O++, H+) in coincidence with the projectile analyzed after the collision, i.e., either being H+, neutral H after single electron capture during the ionization event, or H- after double electron capture. After proper calibration we are thus able to determine a complete set of cross sections for the ionization of a molecular target by protons including the total and the partial cross sections and in addition also the direct ionization and the electron capture cross sections.
