Abstract
Converting CO2 into value-added products containing B-C bonds is a great challenge, especially for multiple B-C bonds, which are versatile building blocks for organoborane chemistry. In the condensed phase, the B-C bond is typically formed through transition metal-catalyzed direct borylation of hydrocarbons via C-H bond activation or transition metal-catalyzed insertion of carbenes into B-H bonds. However, excessive amounts of powerful boryl reagents are required, and products containing B-C bonds are complex. Herein, a novel method to construct multiple B-C bonds at room temperature is proposed by the gas-phase reactions of CO2 with LaBmOn- (m = 1-4, n = 1 or 2). Mass spectrometry and density functional theory calculations are applied to investigate these reactions, and a series of new compounds, CB2O2-, CB3O3-, and CB3O2-, which possess B-C bonds, are generated in the reactions of LaB3,4O2- with CO2. When the number of B atoms in the clusters is reduced to 2 or 1, there is only CO-releasing channel, and no CBxOy- compounds are released. Two major factors are responsible for this quite intriguing reactivity: (1) Synergy of electron transfer and boron-boron Lewis acid-base pair mechanisms facilitates the rupture of C═O double bond in CO2. (2) The boron sites in the clusters can efficiently capture the newly formed CO units in the course of reactions, favoring the formation of B-C bonds. This finding may provide fundamental insights into the CO2 transformation driven by clusters containing lanthanide atoms and how to efficiently build B-C bonds under room temperature.

Abstract
The presence of nonadiabaticity in the photodetachment bands of the anionic mixed carbon-boron cluster C3B5- has been realized through ab initio electronic structure calculations and detailed analyses of quantum dynamics study on top of those electronic structures. In the course of our study, we traverse extensive first principles electronic structure calculations to compute potential energy curves and to trace the energetic locations for the conical intersections in the multidimensional surfaces. All the ab initio calculations are performed on the four low-lying electronic states of the C3B5 cluster, while quantum nuclear dynamics are pursued on those electronic states by applying both time-dependent and time-independent quantum chemistry frameworks. In particular, we rely on the diabatic electronic representation to construct the molecular Hamiltonian. Altogether, the simulated theoretical spectra offer exceptional agreement with the experimental attainments.

Abstract
Photoelectron spectroscopy combined with quantum chemistry has been a powerful approach to elucidate the structures and bonding of size-selected boron clusters (Bn-), revealing a prevalent planar world that laid the foundation for borophenes. Investigations of metal-doped boron clusters not only lead to novel structures but also provide important information about the metal-boron bonds that are critical to understanding the properties of boride materials. The current review focuses on recent advances in transition-metal-doped boron clusters, including the discoveries of metal-boron multiple bonds and metal-doped novel aromatic boron clusters. The study of the RhB- and RhB2O- clusters led to the discovery of the first quadruple bond between boron and a transition-metal atom, whereas a metal-boron triple bond was found in ReB2O- and IrB2O-. The ReB4- cluster was shown to be the first metallaborocycle with Möbius aromaticity, and the planar ReB6- cluster was found to exhibit aromaticity analogous to metallabenzenes. Expected final online publication date for the Annual Review of Physical Chemistry, Volume 73 is April 2022. Please see http://www.annualreviews.org/page/journal/pubdates for revised estimates.

Abstract
In the last decades, experimental techniques in conjunction with theoretical analyses have revealed the surprising structural diversity of boron clusters. Although the 2D to 3D transition thresholds are well-established, there is no certainty about the factors that determine the geometry adopted by these systems. The structural transformation induced by doping usually yields a minimum energy structure with a boron skeleton entirely different from that of the bare cluster. This review summarizes those clusters no larger than 40 boron atoms where one or two dopants show a radical transformation of the structure. Although the structures of these systems are not easy to predict, they often adopt familiar shapes such as umbrella-like, wheel, tubular, and cages in various cases.

Abstract
Because of their interesting structures and bonding and potentials as motifs for new nanomaterials, size-selected boron clusters have received tremendous interest in recent years. In particular, boron cluster anions (Bn-) have allowed systematic joint photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical studies, revealing predominantly two-dimensional structures. The discovery of the planar B36 cluster with a central hexagonal vacancy provided the first experimental evidence of the viability of 2D borons, giving rise to the concept of borophene. The finding of the B40 cage cluster unveiled the existence of fullerene-like boron clusters (borospherenes). Metal-doping can significantly extend the structural and bonding repertoire of boron clusters. Main-group metals interact with boron through s/p orbitals, resulting in either half-sandwich-type structures or substitutional structures. Transition metals are more versatile in bonding with boron, forming a variety of structures including half-sandwich structures, metal-centered boron rings, and metal-centered boron drums. Transition metal atoms have also been found to be able to be doped into the plane of 2D boron clusters, suggesting the possibility of metalloborophenes. Early studies of di-metal-doped boron clusters focused on gold, revealing ladder-like boron structures with terminal gold atoms. Recent observations of highly symmetric Ta2B6- and Ln2Bn- (n = 7-9) clusters have established a family of inverse sandwich structures with monocyclic boron rings stabilized by two metal atoms. The study of size-selected boron and doped-boron clusters is a burgeoning field of research. Further investigations will continue to reveal more interesting structures and novel chemical bonding, paving the foundation for new boron-based chemical compounds and nanomaterials.

Abstract
The recent discovery of the cage-like borospherenes B40-/0, composed of interwoven double chains of boron, presents the possibility of forming BmCn heterofullerenes as hybrids of borospherenes and carbon fullerenes in dual spaces. Based on extensive first-principles theory calculations, we predict herein the possible existence of the high-symmetry BmCn heterofullerenes S10 B40C30 (1), C5 B40C40 (2), and S10 B40C50 (3), which are isovalent with C60, C70, and C80, respectively. These beautiful borafullerenes with boron aggregations feature one B30 boron double-chain nanoring at the equator, two bowl-shaped C15 or C25 caps at the top and bottom, and ten quasi-planar tetracoordinate peripheral C atoms in ten B-centered B6C hexagonal pyramids that are evenly distributed around the waist in a seamless "patched" structural motif. Detailed orbital and bonding analyses indicate that, as they are isovalent with C60, C70, and C80, respectively, B40C30 (1), B40C40 (2), and B40C50 (3) possess 30, 35, and 40 π bonds, respectively, of which 20 are 5c-2e π bonds delocalized over ten hexagonal pyramids that are evenly distributed around the waist. Such structural and bonding patterns confer high stability to these B-C heterofullerenes, which may be synthesized in experiments.

Abstract
An optimization strategy combining a global semi-empirical quantum mechanical search and all-electron density functional theory was adopted to determine the lowest energy structures of B19Si and B19C clusters. The planarization of a B20 cluster by Si and C atom substitution was observed. The structural transition was from the double-ring tubular B20 to an almost perfect planar B19Si and a quasi-planar bowl B19C. B19Si possessed a geometry with a central B atom surrounded by a six-membered ring and a 13-atom outer ring. B19C adopted a geometry with a B5C six-membered hole. Both Si and C atoms occupied peripheral positions. The observed planarization may be attributed to sp2 hybridization, changes in the peripheral bonding, and structural mechanics. Some properties, including the HOMO-LUMO gaps, on-site charge on Si and C atoms, and deformed charge distribution, were discussed.
