Theory and Simulations of Ionic Liquids in Nanoconfinement

Room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) have exciting properties such as nonvolatility, large electrochemical windows, and remarkable variety, drawing much interest in energy storage, gating, electrocatalysis, tunable lubrication, and other applications. Confined RTILs appear in various situations, for instance, in pores of nanostructured electrodes of supercapacitors and batteries, as such electrodes increase the contact area with RTILs and enhance the total capacitance and stored energy, between crossed cylinders in surface force balance experiments, between a tip and a sample in atomic force microscopy, and between sliding surfaces in tribology experiments, where RTILs act as lubricants. The properties and functioning of RTILs in confinement, especially nanoconfinement, result in fascinating structural and dynamic phenomena, including layering, overscreening and crowding, nanoscale capillary freezing, quantized and electrotunable friction, and superionic state. This review offers a comprehensive analysis of the fundamental physical phenomena controlling the properties of such systems and the current state-of-the-art theoretical and simulation approaches developed for their description. We discuss these approaches sequentially by increasing atomistic complexity, paying particular attention to new physical phenomena emerging in nanoscale confinement. This review covers theoretical models, most of which are based on mapping the problems on pertinent statistical mechanics models with exact analytical solutions, allowing systematic analysis and new physical insights to develop more easily. We also describe a classical density functional theory, which offers a reliable and computationally inexpensive tool to account for some microscopic details and correlations that simplified models often fail to consider. Molecular simulations play a vital role in studying confined ionic liquids, enabling deep microscopic insights otherwise unavailable to researchers. We describe the basics of various simulation approaches and discuss their challenges and applicability to specific problems, focusing on RTIL structure in cylindrical and slit confinement and how it relates to friction and capacitive and dynamic properties of confined ions.

Effects of salinity and shear stress on clay deformation: A molecular dynamics study

The deformation of clay minerals is an important phenomenon that is relevant to many problems, particularly those that occur in subsurface geological formations. The salinity of the formations and external shear stress applied to them are two important factors that contribute to the deformation of such porous media. To gain a deeper understanding of such phenomena, we have carried out extensive molecular dynamics simulations using the Na-montmorillonite (Na-MMT) structure as the model of clay minerals and have studied the effect of salt concentration on its swelling. As the NaCl concentration increases, so also does the basal spacing. We demonstrate the effect of the coupling between the applied shear stress and NaCl salinity on the swelling behavior of Na-MMT, namely, deformation of the interlayer space that results in swelling. According to the results, the extent of Na-MMT deformation depends on both the brine salinity and the shear rate.

Molecular Dynamics Simulations of Glycerol Monooleate Confined between Mica Surfaces

The structure and frictional properties of glycerol monooleate (GMO) in organic solvents, with and without water impurity, confined and sheared between two mica surfaces are examined using molecular dynamics simulations. The structure of the fluid is characterized in various ways, and the differences between systems with nonaggregated GMO and with preformed GMO reverse micelles are examined. Preformed reverse micelles are metastable under static conditions in all systems. In n-heptane under shear conditions, with or without water, preformed GMO reverse micelles remain intact and adsorb onto one surface or another, becoming surface micelles. In dry toluene, preformed reverse micelles break apart under shear, while in the presence of water, the reverse micelles survive and become surface micelles. In all systems under static and shear conditions, nonaggregated GMO adsorbs onto both surfaces with roughly equal probability. Added water is strongly associated with the GMO, irrespective of shear or the form of the added GMO. In all cases, with increasing shear rate, the GMO molecules flatten on the surface, and the kinetic friction coefficient increases. Under low-shear conditions, the friction is insensitive to the form of the GMO added, whereas the presence of water is found to lead to a small reduction in friction. Under high-shear conditions, the presence of reverse micelles leads to a significant reduction in friction, whereas the presence of water increases the friction in n-heptane and decreases the friction in toluene.

Couplings between swelling and shear in saturated slit nanopores: a molecular simulation study

In this article, the coupling between swelling and shear in liquid saturated slit nanopores is studied using molecular dynamics simulations on Lennard-Jones systems. First, the consistency of the simulations using thermodynamics and direct routes is validated when dealing separately with swelling and shear. Then, the coupling between swelling and shear is explored by displacing the solid walls in one direction while letting them move freely on the other. Results indicate that shear can induce swelling and vice versa because of the confined fluid phase structure. This phenomenon, which is neglected in poromechanics modeling, may be non-negligible in highly structured microporous systems, such as clays. It implies that the response to a variation in the external load can be a combination of volumetric and shear deformations, because of the fluid. Finally, we explore the behavior induced by solid walls moving at a constant velocity. Interestingly, when the wall velocity exceeds the swelling velocity, the instantaneous states of the system are no longer at equilibrium and the averaged pore width slightly increases with increasing shear rate.

Influence of confinement on thermodiffusion

This work focuses on a possible influence of a nanoporous medium on the thermodiffusion of a fluid "isotopic" mixture. To do so, we performed molecular dynamics simulations of confined Lennard-Jones binary equimolar mixtures using grand-canonical like and non-equilibrium approaches in sub- and super-critical conditions. The study was conducted in atomistic slit pore of three adsorbent natures for various widths (from 5 to 35 times the size of a molecule). The simulation results indicate that for all thermodynamic conditions and whatever the pore characteristics, the confinement has a negligible effect on the thermal diffusion factor/Soret coefficient. However, when considered separately, the mass diffusion and thermodiffusion coefficients have been found to be largely influenced by the pore characteristics. These two coefficients decrease noticeably when adsorption is stronger and pore width smaller, a behavior that is consistent with a simple hydrodynamic explanation.

Structure and friction of stearic acid and oleic acid films adsorbed on iron oxide surfaces in squalane

The structure and friction of fatty acid surfactant films adsorbed on iron oxide surfaces lubricated by squalane are examined using large-scale molecular dynamics simulations. The structures of stearic acid and oleic acid films under static and shear conditions, and at various surface coverages, are described in detail, and the effects of unsaturation in the tail group are highlighted. At high surface coverage, the measured properties of stearic acid and oleic acid films are seen to be very similar. At low and intermediate surface coverages, the presence of a double bond, as in oleic acid, is seen to give rise to less penetration of lubricant in to the surfactant film and less layering of the lubricant near to the film. The kinetic friction coefficient is measured as a function of shear rate within the hydrodynamic (high shear rate) lubrication regime. Lubricant penetration and layering are observed to be correlated with friction coefficient. The friction coefficient with oleic acid depends only weakly on surface coverage, while stearic acid admits more lubricant penetration, and its friction coefficient increases significantly with decreasing surface coverage. Connections between film structure and friction are discussed.
