Abstract
We present the first origin-independent approach for the treatment of two-photon circular dichroism (TPCD) using coupled cluster methods. The approach is assessed concerning its behavior on the choice of the basis set and different coupled cluster methods. We also provide a comparison of results from CC2 with those from density functional theory using the CAM-B3LYP functional. Concerning the basis set we note that in most cases an augmented triple zeta basis or a doubly augmented double zeta basis is needed for reasonably converged results. In the comparison of different coupled cluster methods results from CCSD, CC3 and CC2 have been found to be quite similar in most cases, while CCS results differ remarkably from the results at the higher levels. However, this proof-of-principle study also shows that further benchmarking of DFT and CC2 against accurate coupled cluster reference values (e.g. CCSD or CC3) is needed.

Abstract
Time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) calculations of electronic circular dichroism (ECD) are widely used to determine absolute configurations (ACs) of chiral molecules. Two very popular DFT exchange-correlation functionals, one hybrid (B3LYP) and one long-range corrected (CAM-B3LYP), along with a hierarchical sequence of basis sets were investigated, and the ECD spectra predicted for eight alkenes and compared to gas-phase experimental spectra. Little variation in predicted ECD spectra was found with the basis set size enlargement, but the sensitivity to the functional is greater. Good agreement was obtained only with the CAM-B3LYP functional, leading to the conclusion that TDDFT calculations of ECD spectra can routinely provide reliable ACs if and only if an appropriate functional is used. For camphene, twistene, syn-(E)-bisfenchylidene, and phyllocladene, solvent effects were estimated.

Abstract
Coupled cluster and density functional models of specific rotation and vacuum UV (VUV) absorption and circular dichroism spectra are reported for the conformationally flexible molecules (R)-3-chloro-1-butene and (R)-2-chlorobutane. Coupled cluster length- and modified-velocity-gauge representations of the Rosenfeld optical activity tensor yield significantly different specific rotations for (R)-3-chloro-1-butene, with the latter providing much closer comparison (within 3%) to the available gas-phase experimental data at 355 and 633 nm. Density functional theory overestimates the experimental rotations for (R)-3-chloro-1-butene by approximately 80%. For (R)-2-chlorobutane, on the other hand, all three models give reasonable comparison to experiment. The theoretical specific rotations of the individual conformers of (R)-3-chloro-1-butene are much larger than those of (R)-2-chlorobutane, in disagreement with previous studies of the temperature dependence of the experimental rotations in solution. Simulations of VUV absorption and circular dichroism spectra reveal large differences between the coupled cluster and density functional excitation energies and the rotational strengths. However, while these differences lead to very different specific rotations for (R)-3-chloro-1-butene, they have much less impact on the computed specific rotations for (R)-2-chlorobutane. In addition, the coupled cluster VUV absorption spectrum of (R)-2-chlorobutane compares well to experiment.

Abstract
The complex linear polarization propagator approach has been applied to the calculation of electronic circular dichroism spectra of 3R-chloro-1-butyne, 3R-methylcyclopentanone, 3S-methylcyclohexanone, 4R-1,1-dimethyl-[3]-(1,2)ferrocenophan-2-on, S-3,3,3',3'-tetramethyl-1,1'-spirobi[3H,2,1]-benzoxaselenole, and the fullerene C84. Using time-dependent Kohn-Sham density functional theory, it is shown that a direct and efficient evaluation of the circular dichroism spectrum can be achieved. The approach allows for the determination of the circular dichroism at an arbitrary wavelength thereby, in a common formulation and implementation, covering the visible, ultraviolet, and x-ray regions of the spectrum. In contrast to traditional methods, the entire manifold of excited states is taken into account in the calculation of the circular dichroism at a given wavelength.

Abstract
Accurate quantum-chemical calculations of the excitation energies and the rotatory strengths of dichalcogens R-Ch-Ch-R (Ch = S, Se, Te) were carried out with the symmetry adapted cluster (SAC) and SAC-configuration interaction (CI) methods. A series of straight-chain molecules (dihydrogen dichalcogenide, dimethyl dichalcogenide, and (+)-bis(2-methylbutyl) dichalcogenide) and one cyclic molecule (2,3-(R,R)-dichalcogenadecalin) were adopted for comparative analysis. The calculated excitation and circular dichroism (CD) spectra were in good agreement with experimental ones (Laur, P. H. A. In Proceedings of the Third International Symposium on Organic Selenium and Tellurium Compounds; Cagniant, D., Kirsch, G., Eds.; Universite de Metz: Metz, 1979; pp 219-299) within 0.3 eV. The fitting CD spectra also reasonably reproduced the experimental ones. In all the molecules adopted, the first and second lowest bands were assigned to the n-sigma(Ch-Ch) transition and the third and fourth lowest bands to the n-sigma(Ch-R) transition. The first and second lowest bands apparently depended on the R-Ch-Ch-R dihedral angle, suggesting that the orbital energies of two sigma(Ch-Ch) change with the R-Ch-Ch-R dihedral angle. This calculated trend agrees with two empirical rules: the C(2) rule and the quadrant rule.

Abstract
In principle, the absolute configuration (AC) of a chiral molecule can be deduced from its optical rotation (OR) and/or its electronic circular dichroism (ECD). In practice, this requires reliable methodologies for predicting OR and ECD. The recent application of ab initio time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT) to the calculation of transparent spectral region OR and ECD has greatly enhanced the reliability with which these phenomena can be predicted. TDDFT calculations of OR and ECD are being increasingly utilized in determining ACs. Nevertheless, such calculations are not perfect, and as a result, ACs determined are not 100% reliable. In this paper, we examine the reliability of the TDDFT methods in the case of chiral alkenes. Sodium d line specific rotations, [alpha]D, are predicted for 26 conformationally rigid alkenes of known AC, ranging in size from 5 to 20 C atoms, and with [alpha]D values in the range of 0-500. The mean absolute deviation of predicted [alpha]D values from experimental values is 28.7. With one exception, beta-pinene, the signs of [alpha]D are correctly predicted. Errors in calculated [alpha]D values are approximately random. Our results define a "zone of indeterminacy" within which calculated [alpha]D values cannot be used to determine ACs with >95% confidence. TDDFT ECD spectra are predicted for eight of the alkenes and compared to experimental spectra. Agreement ranges from modestly good to poor, leading to the conclusion that TDDFT calculations of ECD spectra are not yet of sufficient accuracy to routinely provide highly reliable ACs. TDDFT OR calculations for two conformationally flexible alkenes, 3-tert-butylcyclohexene and trans-4-carene, are also reported. For the former, predicted rotations are incorrect in sign over the range 589-365 nm. It is possible that the AC of this molecule has been incorrectly assigned.

Abstract
Coupled-cluster and density-functional methods have been used to determine specific rotations and electronic circular dichroism (ECD) rotational strengths for (S)-2-chloropropionitrile. Coupled-cluster specific rotations using both the length- and velocity-gauge representations of the electric-dipole operator, computed with basis sets of triple-zeta quality containing up to 326 functions, compare very well with recently reported gas-phase cavity-ring-down polarimetry data. ECD rotational strengths for the six lowest-lying excited states are found to vary in sign, and the second excited state, which has a larger rotational strength than the first by a factor of 4, was found to yield a much larger contribution (by a factor of 10) to the overall negative specific rotation observed both experimentally and theoretically. However, both valence and Rydberg states appear to make substantial contributions to the total rotation, often of opposite sign from the converged/linear-response result. Furthermore, the sum-over-states approach was found to be inadequate for reproducing the specific rotations derived from the linear-response approach, even when 100 excited states (well beyond the estimated ionization limit) were included in the summation. Density-functional specific rotations using the B3LYP functional with basis sets of quadruple-zeta quality containing up to 588 functions are found to be too large compared to experiment by approximately a factor of 2. This error appears to be related to both the underestimation of the electronic excitation energies, as well as concomitant overestimation of the corresponding ECD rotational strengths. Although earlier studies reported good agreement between density-functional specific rotations and experiment when electric-field-dependent functions were used in conjunction with a double-zeta-quality basis set, the results reported here, which are near the basis-set limit, suggest that this agreement may be fortuitous.

Abstract
To identify enantioselective nonsteroidal aromatase inhibitors, a multidisciplinary medicinal chemistry approach was pursued. First, our earlier CoMFA model [Bioorg. Med. Chem. 1998,6, 377-388] was extended taking purposely into account previously discovered enantioselective aromatase inhibitors. The 3D QSAR model was then exploited to design chiral ligands, whose configurational assignment was obtained, after HPLC separation, by means of a combination of circular dichroism measurements and time dependent density functional calculations. Finally, the new enantiomeric inhibitors were separately tested to ascertain both their potency against the cytochrome P450 aromatase (CYP19; EC 1.14.14.1), and their selectivity relative to another enzyme of the P450 family. A satisfactory agreement between experimental and predicted data allowed us to assert that a properly built "enantioselective CoMFA model" might constitute a useful tool for addressing enantioselective ligands design.

Abstract
A new implementation of the approximate coupled cluster singles and doubles CC2 linear response model using Cholesky decomposition of the two-electron integrals is presented. Significantly reducing storage demands and computational effort without sacrificing accuracy compared to the conventional model, the algorithm is well suited for large-scale applications. Extensive basis set convergence studies are presented for the static and frequency-dependent electric dipole polarizability of benzene and C60, and for the optical rotation of CNOFH2 and (-)-trans-cyclooctene (TCO). The origin-dependence of the optical rotation is calculated and shown to persist for CC2 even at basis set convergence.
