Abstract
The destruction of molecules by photodissociation plays a major role in many radiation-rich environments, including the evolution of the atmospheres of exoplanets, which often exist close to UV-rich stars. Most current photodissociation calculations and databases assume T = 0 K, which is inadequate for hot exoplanets and stars. A method is developed for computing photodissociation spectra of diatomic molecules as a function of temperature exploiting bound state variational nuclear motion program Duo and post-processing program ExoCross. Discrete transition intensities are spread out to represent a continuous photodissociation spectrum either by Gaussian smoothing or by averaging calculations over a range of different grid sizes. Our approach is tested on four different chemical species (HCl, HF, NaCl and BeH+), showing its ability to reproduce photodissociation cross sections and rates computed with other approaches and experiment. The temperature dependence of photodissociation cross sections and rates is studies showing strong temperature variation of the photodissociation cross sections.

Abstract
The potential energy curves of the low-lying electronic states of Hydrogen fluoride (HF) have been investigated by using multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) approach in combination with cc-pV5Z basis sets for H and aug-cc-pV6Z basis sets for F. Three singlet states (X(1)Σ(+),B(1)Σ(+), 1(1)Δ), two triplet valence states ((3)ΠV,(3)ΣV(+)) and five triplet Rydberg states ((3)ΣR1(+),(3)ΠR1,(3)ΔR1,(3)ΣR1(-),(3)ΠR2) of HF molecular are identified. (3)ΠV and (3)ΣV(+) states are repulsive, the spectroscopic parameters (De, Re, ωe, Be and Te) of the bound states are derived in the present work. We find that the order of energy levels of (3)ΣR1(+),(3)ΠR1,(3)ΔR1 electronic states is different with other literatures, (3)ΣR1(+) is the lowest in these three states, which undergoes a strongly avoided crossing with the valence state (3)ΣV(+). The (3)ΣR1(-) state is studied at the first time. In addition, the dipole moments (DM), transition dipole moments (TDM), Einstein coefficients (Av'v'') , Franck-Condon factors (qv'v'') and radiative lifetime (τv') for B(1)Σ(+)-X(1)Σ(+) systems are predicted.

Abstract
Radiative association for the formation of hydrogen fluoride through the A(1)Π → X(1)Σ(+) and X(1)Σ(+) → X(1)Σ(+) transitions is studied using quantum and classical dynamics. The total thermal rate constant is obtained for temperatures from 10 K to 20,000 K. Agreement between semiclassical and quantum approaches is observed for the A(1)Π → X(1)Σ(+) rate constant above 2000 K. The agreement is explained by the fact that the corresponding cross section is free of resonances for this system. At temperatures below 2000 K we improve the agreement by implementing a simplified semiclassical expression for the rate constant, which includes a quantum corrected pair distribution. The rate coefficient for the X(1)Σ(+) → X(1)Σ(+) transition is calculated using Breit-Wigner theory and a classical formula for the resonance and direct contributions, respectively. In comparison with quantum calculations the classical formula appears to overestimate the direct contribution to the rate constant by about 12% for this transition. Below about 450 K the resonance contribution is larger than the direct, and above that temperature the opposite holds. The biggest contribution from resonances is at the lowest temperature in the study, 10 K, where it is more than four times larger than the direct. Below 1800 K the radiative association rate constant due to X(1)Σ(+) → X(1)Σ(+) transitions dominates over A(1)Π → X(1)Σ(+), while above that temperature the situation is the opposite.

Abstract
The photodissociation of vibrationally excited Cl(2)(v = 1) has been investigated experimentally using the velocity mapped ion imaging technique. The experimental measurements presented here are compared with the results of time-dependent wavepacket calculations performed on a set of ab initio potential energy curves. The high level calculations allow prediction of all the dynamical information regarding the dissociation, including electronic polarization effects. Using a combination of theory and experiment it was found that there was negligible cooling of the vibrational degree of freedom of the parent molecule in the molecular beam. The results presented are compared with those following the photodissociation of Cl(2)(v = 0). Although the same electronic states are found to be important for Cl(2)(v = 1) as for Cl(2)(v = 0), significant differences were found regarding many of the observables. The overall level of agreement between theory and experiment was found to be reasonable and confirms previous assignments of the photodissociation mechanism.

Abstract
A theoretical treatment is presented for the nonadiabatic photodissociation of hydroxyl radical. Five electronic states, X 2Π, A 2Σ+, 14Σ-, 12Σ- and 14Π, are included in this simulation. Based on the accurate ab initio calculations of the potential energy curves, transition dipole moments and nonadiabatic couplings between the relevant states, the dissociation dynamics are investigated using the time-dependent quantum wave packet approach. The direct dissociation, following the excitation from the specific vibrational levels of the ground state X 2Π to the repulsive state 12Σ- is examined, where the total and partial cross sections and the branching fractions of spin–orbit fine-structures of O (3 P J) are calculated over a wide range of the incident photon frequencies. For the predissociation via the bound excited state A 2Σ+, the influence of the nonadiabatic interactions in different internuclear regions and the role of the repulsive states in the dissociation starting at different vibrational levels are also analyzed through the spin–orbit branching fractions of products.

Abstract
Velocity mapped ion imaging and resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization time-of-flight methods have been used to investigate the photodissociation dynamics of the diatomic molecule Cl(2) following excitation to the first UV absorption band. The experimental results presented here are compared with high level time dependent wavepacket calculations performed on a set of ab initio potential energy curves [D. B. Kokh, A. B. Alekseyev, and R. J. Buenker, J. Chem. Phys. 120, 11549 (2004)]. The theoretical calculations provide the first determination of all dynamical information regarding the dissociation of a system of this complexity, including angular momentum polarization. Both low rank K = 1, 2 and high rank K = 3 electronic polarization are predicted to be important for dissociation into both asymptotic product channels and, in general, good agreement is found between the recent theory and the measurements made here, which include the first experimental determination of high rank K = 3 orientation.

Abstract
A theoretical treatment of the photodissociation of the molecular ion Li(2) (+) in one-color intense laser fields, using the time-dependent wave packet approach in a Floquet Born-Oppenheimer representation, is presented. Six electronic states 1,2 (2)Σ(g)(+), 1,2 (2)Σ(u)(+), 1 (2)Π(g), and 1 (2)Π(u) are of relevance in this simulation and have been included. The dependences of the fragmental dissociation probabilities and kinetic energy release (KER) spectra on pulse width, peak intensity, polarization angle, wavelength, and initial vibrational level are analyzed to interpret the influence of control parameters of the external field. Three main dissociation channels, 1 (2)Σ(g)(+) (m = -1), 2 (2)Σ(g)(+) (m = -2), and 2 (2)Σ(u)(+) (m = -3), are seen to dominate the dissociation processes under a wide variety of laser conditions and give rise to well separated groups of KER features. Different dissociation mechanisms for the involved Floquet channels are discussed.

Abstract
The multireference Spin-Orbit (SO) Configuration Interaction (CI) method in its Lambda-S Contracted SO-CI (LSC-SO-CI) version is employed to calculate potential energy curves for the ground and low-lying excited states of the ArH(+) cation. For the first time, electric dipole moments are also computed in the approach, including SO coupling for transitions to the states responsible for the first absorption continuum (A-band) of ArH(+). On this basis, the partial and total absorption spectra in this energy range are obtained. It is shown that absorption in the A-band is dominated by the parallel A(1)Sigma(+)<--X(1)Sigma(+) transition. In the low-energy part of the band (<95 x 10(3) cm(-1)) the absorption is caused by the perpendicular B(1)Pi<--X(1)Sigma(+) excitation, but transitions to the b(3)Pi(0(+),1) states are also not negligible. The branching ratio Gamma for the final photodissociation products is calculated and it is shown to increase smoothly from 0 in the red tail of the band to 1 at E>or= 10(5) cm(-1). The latter value corresponds to the exclusive formation of the spin-excited Ar(+)((2)P(1/2)) ions, and thus leads to the inverse population of the Ar(+)((2)P(1/2)-(2)P(3/2)) ion states.

Abstract
We present the quantum mechanical expressions for the angular momentum distribution of the photofragments produced in slow predissociation. The paper is based on our recent theoretical treatment [J. Chem. Phys. 123, 034307 (2005)] of the recoil angle dependence of the photofragment multipole moments which explicitly treat the role of molecular axis rotation on the electronic angular momentum polarization of the fragments. The electronic wave function of the molecule was used in the adiabatic body frame representation. The rigorous expressions for the fragment state multipoles which have been explicitly derived from the scattering wave function formalism have been used for the case of slow predissociation where a molecule lives in the excited quasibound state much longer than a rotation period. Possible radial nonadiabatic interactions were taken into consideration. The optical excitation of a single rotational branch and the broadband incoherent excitation of all possible rotational branches have been analyzed in detail. The angular momentum polarization of the photofragments has been treated in the high-J limit. The polarization of the photofragment angular momenta predicted by the theory depends on photodissociation mechanism and can in many cases be significant.

Abstract
Ab initio potential energy curves, transition dipole moments, and spin-orbit coupling matrix elements are computed for HBr. These are then used, within the framework of time-dependent quantum-mechanical wave-packet calculations, to study the photodissociation dynamics of the molecule. Total and partial integral cross sections, the branching fraction for the formation of excited-state bromine atoms Br(2P(1/2)), and the lowest order anisotropy parameters, beta, for both ground and excited-state bromine are calculated as a function of photolysis energy and compared to experimental and theoretical data determined previously. Higher order anisotropy parameters are computed for the first time for HBr and compared to recent experimental measurements. A new expression for the Re[a1(3) (parallel, perpendicular)] parameter describing coherent parallel and perpendicular production of ground-state bromine in terms of the dynamical functions is given. Although good agreement is obtained between the theoretical predictions and the experimental measurements, the discrepancies are analyzed to establish how improvements might be achieved. Insight is obtained into the nonadiabatic dynamics by comparing the results of diabatic and fully adiabatic calculations.

Abstract
The angular momentum polarization of atomic photofragments provides a detailed insight into the dynamics of the photodissociation process. In this article, the origins of electronic angular momentum polarization are introduced and experimental and theoretical methods for the measurement or calculation of atomic orientation and alignment parameters described. Many diatomic photodissociation systems are surveyed, in order to provide an overview both of the historical development of the field and of the most state-of-the-art contemporary studies.

Abstract
Ultraviolet (UV) photodissociation dynamics of jet-cooled SH radical (in X 2pi(3/2), nu"=0-2) is studied in the photolysis wavelength region of 216-232 nm using high-n Rydberg atom time-of-flight technique. In this wavelength region, anisotropy beta parameter of the H-atom product is approximately -1, and spin-orbit branching fractions of the S(3P(J)) product are close to S(3P2):S(3P1):S(3P0)=0.51:0.36:0.13. The UV photolysis of SH is via a direct dissociation and is initiated on the repulsive 2sigma- potential-energy curve in the Franck-Condon region after the perpendicular transition 2sigma(-)-X 2pi. The S(3P(J)) product fine-structure state distribution approaches that in the sudden limit dissociation on the single repulsive 2sigma- state, but it is also affected by the nonadiabatic couplings among the repulsive 4sigma-, 2sigma-, and 4pi states, which redistribute the photodissociation flux from the initially excited 2sigma- state to the 4sigma- and 4pi states. The bond dissociation energy D0(S-H)=29,245+/-25 cm(-1) is obtained.

Abstract
The photodissociation dynamics of HI and DI are examined using time-dependent wave-packet techniques. The orientation and alignment parameters aQ(K) (p) are determined as a function of photolysis energy for the resulting ground-state I(2P(3/2)) and excited-state I(2P(1/2)) atoms. The aQ(K) (p) parameters describe the coherent and incoherent contributions to the angular momentum distributions from the A 1pi(1), a 3pi(1), and t 3sigma(1) electronic states accessed by perpendicular excitation and the a 3pi(0+) state accessed by a parallel transition. The outcomes of the dynamics based on both shifted ab initio results and three empirical models for the potential-energy curves and transition dipole moments are compared and contrasted. It is demonstrated that experimental measurement of the aQ(K) (p) parameters for the excitation from the vibrational ground state (upsilon=0) would be able to distinguish between the available models for the HI potential-energy curves and transition dipole moments. The differences between the aQ(K) (p) parameters for the excitation from upsilon=0 stand in sharp contrast to the scalar properties, i.e., total cross section and I* branching fraction, which require experimental measurement of photodissociation from excited vibrational states (upsilon>0) to distinguish between the models.

Abstract
We present the quantum-mechanical expressions for the recoil angle dependence of the photofragment multipole moments which explicitly treat the role of molecular axis rotation on the electronic angular momentum polarization of the fragments. The paper generalizes the result of Siebbeles et al. [J. Chem. Phys. 100, 3610 (1994)] to the case of dissociation of rotating molecules. The electronic wave function of the molecule was used in the adiabatic body-frame representation. The obtained rigorous expressions for the fragment state multipoles have been explicitly derived from the scattering wave-function formalism and then simplified using the quasiclassical approximation in the high-J limit. Possible radial and Coriolis nonadiabatic interactions have been taken into consideration. It is shown that the rotation of the molecular axis is described by a number of rotation factors which depend on the rank of the incident-photon polarization matrix, on the dissociation mechanism, and on the classical angle of rotation of the molecular axis gamma.

Abstract
The complete angular momentum distributions and vector correlation coefficients (orientation and alignment) of ground state I((2)P(32)) and excited state I((2)P(12)) atoms resulting from the photodissociation of HI have been computed as a function of photolysis energy. The orientation and alignment parameters a(Q) ((K))(p) that describe the coherent and incoherent contributions to the angular momentum distributions from the multiple electronic states accessed by parallel and perpendicular transitions are determined using a time-dependent wave packet treatment of the dissociation dynamics. The dynamics are based on potential energy curves and transition dipole moments that have been reported previously [R. J. LeRoy, G. T. Kraemer, and S. Manzhos, J. Chem. Phys. 117, 9353 (2002)] and used to successfully model the scalar (total cross section and branching fraction) and lowest order vector (anisotropy parameter beta) properties of the photodissociation. Predictions of the a(Q) ((K))(p), parameters for the isotopically substituted species DI are reported and contrasted to the analogous HI results. The resulting polarization for the corresponding H/D partners are also determined and demonstrate that both H and D atoms produced can be highly spin polarized. Comparison of these predictions for HI and DI with experimental measurement will provide the most stringent test of the current model for the electronic structure and the interpretation of the dissociation based on noncoupled excited state dynamics.

Abstract
The production of spin-polarized hydrogen atoms from the photodissociation of hydrogen chloride with circularly polarized 193-nanometer light is inferred from the measurement of the complete angular momentum distributions of ground state Cl(2P3/2)and excited state Cl(2P1/2)cofragments by slice imaging. The experimentally measured and ab initio predicted a q(k) (p)parameters, which describe the single-surface and multiple-surface-interference contributions to the angular momentum distributions, are in excellent agreement. For laser pulses longer than about 0.7 ns, the polarization of the electron and the proton are both 36%.
