Theoretical Insights into Excitation-Induced Oxygen Activation on a Tetrahedral Ag8 Cluster

Research on small-molecule dissociation on plasmonic silver nanoparticles is on the rise. Herein, we investigate the effect of various parameters of light, i.e., field strength, polarization direction, and energy of oscillation, on the dynamics of oxygen upon photoexcitation of the O₂@Ag₈ composite using real-time time-dependent density functional theory calculations with Ehrenfest dynamics. From our excited-state dynamics calculations, we found that increasing the strength of the external electric field brings a significant contribution to the O-O dissociation. In addition, the polarization direction of the incident light becomes important, especially at weaker field strengths. The light that is polarized along the direction of charge transfer from the metal to adsorbate and the light that is polarized along the long axis of molecular oxygen were found to enhance the bond breaking of O₂ significantly. We also found that at the weakest electric field strength, the oxygen molecule stays adsorbed to the silver cluster when the incident light resonates with low-energy excited states and desorbs away from the metal cluster with high-energy excitations. With strong electric fields, oxygen either desorbs or dissociates.

Elucidation of the molecular and electronic structures of some magic silver clusters Agn (n = 8, 18, 20)

Density functional theory (DFT) calculations were carried out to explore the geometric, spectroscopic, and electronic properties of three magic silver clusters Ag_n (n = 8, 18, and 20) in detail. The computed results show that the global minima of these clusters are compact, near-spherical structures, while other low-lying isomers exhibit oblate or prolate shapes. Vertical ionization energies for the low-lying isomers were also computed and assigned with respect to available experimental values. Although several isomers were predicted to have similar energies, their electronic and vibrational signatures were quite distinctive, meaning that they could be used as fingerprint signals to distinguish between isomers. In addition, the electronic structures of these systems were explored using the phenomenological shell model. Calculations for the coinage metal clusters M₂₀ (M = Cu, Ag, Au) indicated that the structures and properties of the Ag cluster are similar to those of the Cu cluster in that both Cu₂₀ and Ag₂₀ prefer a compact structure whereas Au₂₀ prefers to adopt a tetrahedral form. The adsorption and activation of NO on silver clusters with sizes up to one nanometer: interactions dominated by electron transfer from silver to NO

Evidence for NO unitary adsorption, the formation of (NO)₂ and the reduction to form N₂O is observed on silver clusters with sizes up to one nanometer. The adsorption and activation of NO are enhanced by electron transfer from silver to NO.

Infrared photodissociation spectroscopy of mass-selected silver and gold nitrosyl cation complexes

The [M(NO)n](+) cation complexes (M = Au and Ag) are studied for exploring the coordination and bonding between nitric oxide and noble metal cations. These species are produced in a laser vaporization supersonic ion source and probed by infrared photodissociation spectroscopy in the NO stretching frequency region using a collinear tandem time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The geometric and electronic structures of these complexes are determined by comparison of the distinctive experimental spectra with simulated spectra derived from density functional theory calculations. All of these noble metal nitrosyl cation complexes are characterized to have bent NO ligands serving as one-electron donors. The spectrum of [Au(NO)2Ar](+) is consistent with 2-fold coordination with a near linear N-Au-N arrangement for this ion. The [Au(NO)n](+) (n = 3-4) cations are determined to be a mixture of 2-fold coordinated form and 3- or 4-fold coordinated form. In contrast, the spectra of [Ag(NO)n](+) (n = 3-6) provide evidence for the completion of the first coordination shell at n = 5. The high [Au(NO)n](+) and [Ag(NO)n](+) (n ≥ 3 for Au, n ≥ 4 for Ag) complexes each involve one or more (NO)2 dimer ligands, as observed in the copper nitrosyl cation complexes, indicating that ligand-ligand coupling plays an important role in the structure and bonding of noble metal nitrosyl cation complexes.
