Electroosmotic Flow in Polarizable Charged Cylindrical Nanopores

We present a simulation method to study electroosmotic flow in charged nanopores with dielectric contrast between their interior and the surrounding medium. To perform simulations, we separate the electrostatic energy into the direct Coulomb and the polarization contributions. The polarization part is obtained using periodic Green functions and can be expressed as a sum of fast converging modified Bessel functions. On the other hand, the direct Coulomb part of the electrostatic energy is calculated using fast converging three-dimensional (3D) Ewald summation method, corrected for a pseudo one-dimensional (1D) geometry. The effects of polarization are found to be particularly important for systems with multivalent counterions and narrow nanopores. Depending on the surface charge density, polarization can increase the volumetric flow rate by 200%. For systems with 3:1 electrolyte, we observe that there is a saturation of the volumetric flow rate. In this case, for polarizable pores, the flow rate is 100% higher than for nonpolarizable pores.

A fast spectral method for electrostatics in doubly periodic slit channels

We develop a fast method for computing the electrostatic energy and forces for a collection of charges in doubly periodic slabs with jumps in the dielectric permittivity at the slab boundaries. Our method achieves spectral accuracy by using Ewald splitting to replace the original Poisson equation for nearly singular sources with a smooth far-field Poisson equation, combined with a localized near-field correction. Unlike existing spectral Ewald methods, which make use of the Fourier transform in the aperiodic direction, we recast the problem as a two-point boundary value problem in the aperiodic direction for each transverse Fourier mode for which exact analytic boundary conditions are available. We solve each of these boundary value problems using a fast, well-conditioned Chebyshev method. In the presence of dielectric jumps, combining Ewald splitting with the classical method of images results in smoothed charge distributions, which overlap the dielectric boundaries themselves. We show how to preserve the spectral accuracy in this case through the use of a harmonic correction, which involves solving a simple Laplace equation with smooth boundary data. We implement our method on graphical processing units and combine our doubly periodic Poisson solver with Brownian dynamics to study the equilibrium structure of double layers in binary electrolytes confined by dielectric boundaries. Consistent with prior studies, we find strong charge depletion near the interfaces due to repulsive interactions with image charges, which points to the need for incorporating polarization effects in understanding confined electrolytes, both theoretically and computationally.

Electroosmotic Flow Grows with Electrostatic Coupling in Confining Charged Dielectric Surfaces

In this work, the effects of polarization of confining charged planar dielectric surfaces on induced electroosmotic flow are investigated. To this end, we use dissipative particle dynamics to model solvent and ionic particles together with a modified Ewald sum method to model electrostatic interactions and surfaces polarization. A relevant difference between counterions number density profiles, velocity profiles, and volumetric flow rates obtained with and without surface polarization for moderate and high electrostatic coupling parameters is observed. For low coupling parameters, the effect is negligible. An increase of almost 500% in volumetric flow rate for moderate/high electrostatic coupling and surface separation is found when polarizable surfaces are considered. The most important result is that the increase in electrostatic coupling substantially increases the electroosmotic flow in all studied range of separations when the dielectric constant of electrolytes is much higher than the dielectric constant of confining walls. For the higher separation simulated, an increase of around 340% in volumetric flow rate when the electrostatic coupling is increased by a factor of two orders of magnitude is obtained.

Surface polarization effects in confined polyelectrolyte solutions

Understanding nanoscale interactions at the interface between two media with different dielectric constants is crucial for controlling many environmental and biological processes, and for improving the efficiency of energy storage devices. In this contributed paper, we show that polarization effects due to such dielectric mismatch remarkably influence the double-layer structure of a polyelectrolyte solution confined between two charged surfaces. Surprisingly, the electrostatic potential across the adsorbed polyelectrolyte double layer at the confining surface is found to decrease with increasing surface charge density, indicative of a negative differential capacitance. Furthermore, in the presence of polarization effects, the electrostatic energy stored in the double-layer structure is enhanced with an increase in the charge amplification, which is the absorption of ions on a like-charged surface. We also find that all of the important double-layer properties, such as charge amplification, energy storage, and differential capacitance, strongly depend on the polyelectrolyte backbone flexibility and the solvent quality. These interesting behaviors are attributed to the interplay between the conformational entropy of the confined polyelectrolytes, the Coulombic interaction between the charged species, and the repulsion from the surfaces with lower dielectric constant.

Connecting energetics to dynamics in particle growth by oriented attachment using real-time observations

The interplay between crystal and solvent structure, interparticle forces and ensemble particle response dynamics governs the process of crystallization by oriented attachment (OA), yet a quantitative understanding is lacking. Using ZnO as a model system, we combine in situ TEM observations of single particle and ensemble assembly dynamics with simulations of interparticle forces and responses to relate experimentally derived interparticle potentials to the underlying interactions. We show that OA is driven by forces and torques due to a combination of electrostatic ion-solvent correlations and dipolar interactions that act at separations well beyond 5 nm. Importantly, coalignment is achieved before particles reach separations at which strong attractions drive the final jump to contact. The observed barrier to attachment is negligible, while dissipative factors in the quasi-2D confinement of the TEM fluid cell lead to abnormal diffusivities with timescales for rotation much less than for translation, thus enabling OA to dominate.

Manipulation of Confined Polyelectrolyte Conformations through Dielectric Mismatch

We demonstrate that a highly charged polyelectrolyte confined in a spherical cavity undergoes reversible transformations between amorphous conformations and a four-fold symmetry morphology as a function of dielectric mismatch between the media inside and outside the cavity. Surface polarization due to dielectric mismatch exhibits an extra "confinement" effect, which is most pronounced within a certain range of the cavity radius and the electrostatic strength between the monomers and counterions and multivalent counterions. For cavities with a charged surface, surface polarization leads to an increased amount of counterions adsorbed in the outer side, further compressing the confined polyelectrolyte into a four-fold symmetry morphology. The equilibrium conformation of the chain is dependent upon several key factors including the relative permittivities of the media inside and outside the cavity, multivalent counterion concentration, cavity radius relative to the chain length, and interface charge density. Our findings offer insights into the effects of dielectric mismatch in packaging and delivery of polyelectrolytes across media with different relative permittivities. Moreover, the reversible transformation of the polyelectrolyte conformations in response to environmental permittivity allows for potential applications in biosensing and medical monitoring.

Simulations of Coulomb systems confined by polarizable surfaces using periodic Green functions

We present an efficient approach for simulating Coulomb systems confined by planar polarizable surfaces. The method is based on the solution of the Poisson equation using periodic Green functions. It is shown that the electrostatic energy arising from the surface polarization can be decoupled from the energy due to the direct Coulomb interaction between the ions. This allows us to combine an efficient Ewald summation method, or any other fast method for summing over the replicas, with the polarization contribution calculated using Green function techniques. We apply the method to calculate density profiles of ions confined between the charged dielectric and metal surfaces.

Quantifying the thickness of the electrical double layer neutralizing a planar electrode: the capacitive compactness

The spatial extension of the ionic cloud neutralizing a charged colloid or an electrode is usually characterized by the Debye length associated with the supporting charged fluid in the bulk. This spatial length arises naturally in the linear Poisson-Boltzmann theory of point charges, which is the cornerstone of the widely used Derjaguin-Landau-Verwey-Overbeek formalism describing the colloidal stability of electrified macroparticles. By definition, the Debye length is independent of important physical features of charged solutions such as the colloidal charge, electrostatic ion correlations, ionic excluded volume effects, or specific short-range interactions, just to mention a few. In order to include consistently these features to describe more accurately the thickness of the electrical double layer of an inhomogeneous charged fluid in planar geometry, we propose here the use of the capacitive compactness concept as a generalization of the compactness of the spherical electrical double layer around a small macroion (González-Tovar et al., J. Chem. Phys. 2004, 120, 9782). To exemplify the usefulness of the capacitive compactness to characterize strongly coupled charged fluids in external electric fields, we use integral equations theory and Monte Carlo simulations to analyze the electrical properties of a model molten salt near a planar electrode. In particular, we study the electrode's charge neutralization, and the maximum inversion of the net charge per unit area of the electrode-molten salt system as a function of the ionic concentration, and the electrode's charge. The behaviour of the associated capacitive compactness is interpreted in terms of the charge neutralization capacity of the highly correlated charged fluid, which evidences a shrinking/expansion of the electrical double layer at a microscopic level. The capacitive compactness and its first two derivatives are expressed in terms of experimentally measurable macroscopic properties such as the differential and integral capacity, the electrode's surface charge density, and the mean electrostatic potential at the electrode's surface.

Strong attractions and repulsions mediated by monovalent salts

Controlling interactions between proteins and nanoparticles in electrolyte solutions is crucial for advancing biological sciences and biotechnology. The assembly of charged nanoparticles (NPs) and proteins in aqueous solutions can be directed by modifying the salt concentration. High concentrations of monovalent salt can induce the solubilization or crystallization of NPs and proteins. By using a multiscale coarse-grained molecular dynamics approach, we show that, due to ionic correlations in the electrolyte, NPs pairs at high monovalent salt concentrations interact via remarkably strong long-range attractions or repulsions, which can be split into three regimes depending on the surface charge densities of the NPs. NPs with zero-to-low surface charge densities interact via a long-range attraction that is stronger and has a similar range to the depletion attraction induced by polymers with radius of gyrations comparable to the NP diameter. On the other hand, moderately charged NPs with smooth surfaces as well as DNA-functionalized NPs with no possibility of hybridization between them interact via a strong repulsion of range and strength larger than the repulsion predicted by models that neglect ionic correlations, including the Derjaguin-Landau-Vervey-Overbeek (DLVO) model. Interactions between strongly charged NPs (>2 e/nm²), both types smooth and DNA-functionalized NPs, show an attractive potential well at intermediate-to-high salt concentrations, which demonstrates that electrolytes can induce aggregation of strongly charged NPs. Our work provides an improved understanding of the role of ionic correlations in NP assembly and design rules to utilize the salting-out process to crystallize NPs.

Control of Selective Ion Transfer across Liquid-Liquid Interfaces: A Rectifying Heterojunction Based on Immiscible Electrolytes

The current rectification displayed by solid-state p-n semiconductor diodes relies on the abundance of electrons and holes near the interface between the p-n junction. In analogy to this electronic device, we propose here the construction of a purely ionic liquid-state electric rectifying heterojunction displaying an excess of monovalent cations and anions near the interface between two immiscible solvents with different dielectric properties. This system does not need any physical membrane or material barrier to show preferential ion transfer but relies on the ionic solvation energy between the two immiscible solvents. We construct a simple device, based on an oil/water interface, displaying an asymmetric behavior of the electric current as a function of the polarity of an applied electric field. This device also exhibits a region of negative differential conductivity, analogous to that observed in brain and heart cells via voltage clamp techniques. Computer simulations and mean field theory calculations for a model of this system show that the application of an external electric field is able to control the bulk concentrations of the ionic species in the immiscible liquids in a manner that is asymmetric with respect to the polarity or direction of the applied electric field. These properties make possible to enhance or suppress selective ion transport at liquid-liquid interfaces with the application of an external electric field or electrostatic potential, mimicking the function of biological ion channels, thus creating opportunities for varied applications.

Mean-field beyond mean-field: the single particle view for moderately to strongly coupled charged fluids

In a counter-ion only charged fluid, Coulomb coupling is quantified by a single dimensionless parameter. Yet, the theoretical treatment of moderately to strongly coupled charged fluids is a difficult task, central to the understanding of a wealth of soft matter problems, including biological systems. We show that the corresponding coupling regime can be remarkably well described by a single particle treatment, which, at variance with previous works, takes due account of inter-ionic interactions. To this end, the prototypical problem of a planar charged dielectric interface is worked out. Testing our predictions against Monte Carlo simulation data reveals an excellent agreement.

Charge neutrality breakdown in confined aqueous electrolytes: Theory and simulation

We study, using Density Functional theory (DFT) and Monte Carlo simulations, aqueous electrolyte solutions between charged infinite planar surfaces, in contact with a bulk salt reservoir. In agreement with recent experimental observations [Z. Luo et al., Nat. Commun. 6, 6358 (2015)], we find that the confined electrolyte lacks local charge neutrality. We show that a DFT based on a bulk-HNC expansion properly accounts for strong electrostatic correlations and allows us to accurately calculate the ionic density profiles between the charged surfaces, even for electrolytes containing trivalent counterions. The DFT allows us to explore the degree of local charge neutrality violation, as a function of plate separation and bulk electrolyte concentration, and to accurately calculate the interaction force between the charged surfaces.

Simulations of Coulomb systems with slab geometry using an efficient 3D Ewald summation method

We present a new approach to efficiently simulate electrolytes confined between infinite charged walls using a 3d Ewald summation method. The optimal performance is achieved by separating the electrostatic potential produced by the charged walls from the electrostatic potential of electrolyte. The electric field produced by the 3d periodic images of the walls is constant inside the simulation cell, with the field produced by the transverse images of the charged plates canceling out. The non-neutral confined electrolyte in an external potential can be simulated using 3d Ewald summation with a suitable renormalization of the electrostatic energy, to remove a divergence, and a correction that accounts for the conditional convergence of the resulting lattice sum. The new algorithm is at least an order of magnitude more rapid than the usual simulation methods for the slab geometry and can be further sped up by adopting a particle-particle particle-mesh approach.

The non-dominance of counterions in charge-asymmetric electrolytes: non-monotonic precedence of electrostatic screening and local inversion of the electric field by multivalent coions

The asymptotic convergence of the thermodynamic and structural properties of unequally-sized charge-symmetric ions in strong electric fields was postulated more than thirty years ago by Valleau and Torrie as the dominance of counterions via the non-linear Poisson-Boltzmann theory [Valleau and Torrie, J. Chem. Phys., 1982, 76, 4623]. According to this mean field prescription, the properties of the electrical double layer near a highly charged electrode immersed in a size-asymmetric binary electrolyte converge to those of a size-symmetric electrolyte if the properties of counterions are the same in both instances. On the other hand, some of the present authors have shown that, in fact, counterions do not dominate the electrical properties of a spherical macroion in the presence of unequally-sized ions, symmetric in valence, if ion correlations and ionic excluded volume effects are taken into account consistently. These ingredients are neglected in the classical Poisson-Boltzmann picture. In the present work, we show the occurrence of the non-dominance of counterions in the opposite scenario, that is, when ions are equally-sized but asymmetric in valence. This is performed in the presence of highly charged colloidal surfaces of spherical and planar geometries for different ionic volume fractions. In addition to the phenomenon of non-dominance of counterions, our simulations and theoretical data also exhibit a non-monotonic order or precedence in the mean electrostatic potential, or electrostatic screening, at the Helmholtz plane of a charged colloid. This interesting behaviour is analyzed as a function of the coion's valence, the ionic volume fraction, and the charge and size of the colloidal particle. All these phenomena are explained in terms of the decay of the electric field near the colloidal surface, and by the appearance of a local inversion of both the electric field and the integrated surface charge density of the colloidal particle in the presence of monovalent counterions and multivalent coions.

Ion-mediated interactions between net-neutral slabs: Weak and strong disorder effects

We investigate the effective interaction between two randomly charged but otherwise net-neutral, planar dielectric slabs immersed in an asymmetric Coulomb fluid containing a mixture of mobile monovalent and multivalent ions. The presence of charge disorder on the apposed bounding surfaces of the slabs leads to substantial qualitative changes in the way they interact, as compared with the standard picture provided by the van der Waals and image-induced, ion-depletion interactions. While, the latter predict purely attractive interactions between strictly neutral slabs, we show that the combined effects from surface charge disorder, image depletion, Debye (or salt) screening, and also, in particular, their coupling with multivalent ions, give rise to a more diverse behavior for the effective interaction between net-neutral slabs at nano-scale separations. Disorder effects show large variation depending on the properly quantified strength of disorder, leading either to non-monotonic effective interaction with both repulsive and attractive branches when the surface charges are weakly disordered (small disorder variance) or to a dominating attractive interaction that is larger both in its range and magnitude than what is predicted from the van der Waals and image-induced, ion-depletion interactions, when the surfaces are strongly disordered (large disorder variance).
