Structure and thermodynamics of core-softened models for alcohols

Size-Pore-Dependent Methanol Sequestration from Water-Methanol Mixtures by an Embedded Graphene Slit

The separation of liquid mixture components is relevant to many applications-ranging from water purification to biofuel production-and is a growing concern related to the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as "Clean water and Sanitation" and "Affordable and clean energy". One promising technique is using graphene slit-pores as filters, or sponges, because the confinement potentially affects the properties of the mixture components in different ways, favoring their separation. However, no systematic study has shown how the size of a pore changes the thermodynamics of the surrounding mixture. Here, we focus on water-methanol mixtures and explore, using Molecular Dynamics simulations, the effects of a graphene pore, with size ranging from 6.5 to 13 Å, for three compositions: pure water, 90%-10%, and 75%-25% water-methanol. We show that tuning the pore size can change the mixture pressure, density and composition in bulk due to the size-dependent methanol sequestration within the pore. Our results can help in optimizing the graphene pore size for filtering applications.

Density anomaly in water-alcohol mixtures: Minimum model for structure makers and breakers

We modeled the change in the temperature of maximum density (TMD) of a waterlike solvent when small amounts of solute are added to the mixture. The solvent is modeled as a two length scales potential, which is known to exhibit waterlike characteristic anomalies, while the solute is chosen to have an attractive interaction with the solvent which is tuned from small to large attractive potential. We show that if the solute exhibits high attraction with the solvent it behaves as a structure maker and the TMD increases with the addition of solute, while if the solute shows a low attraction with the solvent the TMD decreases, with the solute behaving as a structure breaker.

Phase classification using neural networks: application to supercooled, polymorphic core-softened mixtures

Characterization of phases of soft matter systems is a challenge faced in many physical chemical problems. For polymorphic fluids it is an even greater challenge. Specifically, glass forming fluids, as water, can have, besides solid polymorphism, more than one liquid and glassy phases, and even a liquid-liquid critical point. In this sense, we apply a neural network algorithm to analyze the phase behavior of a mixture of core-softened fluids that interact through the continuous-shouldered well (CSW) potential, which have liquid polymorphism and liquid-liquid critical points, similar to water. We also apply the neural network to mixtures of CSW fluids and core-softened alcohols models. We combine and expand methods based on bond-orientational order parameters to study mixtures, applied to mixtures of hardcore fluids and to supercooled water, to include longer range coordination shells. With this, the trained neural network was able to properly predict the crystalline solid phases, the fluid phases and the amorphous phase for the pure CSW and CSW-alcohols mixtures with high efficiency. More than this, information about the phase populations, obtained from the network approach, can help verify if the phase transition is continuous or discontinuous, and also to interpret how the metastable amorphous region spreads along the stable high density fluid phase. These findings help to understand the behavior of supercooled polymorphic fluids and extend the comprehension of how amphiphilic solutes affect the phases behavior.

Core-softened water-alcohol mixtures: the solute-size effects

Water is the most anomalous material on Earth, with a long list of thermodynamic, dynamic and structural behaviors that deviate from what is expected. Recent studies have indicated that these anomalies may be related to a competition between two liquids, which means that water has a potential liquid-liquid phase transition (LLPT) that ends at a liquid-liquid critical point (LLCP). In a recent study [J. Mol. Liq., 2020, 320, 114420], using molecular dynamics simulations and a core-softened potential approach, we have shown that adding a simple solute such as methanol can "kill" the density-anomalous behavior as the LLCP is suppressed by spontaneous crystallization in a hexagonal close packing (HCP) crystal near the LLPT. Now, we extend this work to realize how longer-chain alcohols will affect the complex behavior of water-alcohol mixtures in the supercooled regime. Besides core-softened (CS) methanol, ethanol and 1-propanol were added to a system of identical particles that interact through the continuous shouldered well (CSW) potential. We observed that the density anomaly gradually decreases its extension in phase diagrams until it disappears with the growth of the non-polar chain and the alcohol concentration, different from the liquid-liquid phase transition (and the LLCP), which remained present in all analyzed mixtures, according to Nature, 2001, 409, 692. For our model, the longer non-polar chains and higher concentrations gradually impact the competition between the scales in the CS potential, leading to a gradual disappearing of the anomalies until the TMD total disappearance is observed when the first coordination shell structure is also affected: short-range ordering is favored, leading to less competition between short- and long-range ordering and, consequently, to the extinction of anomalies. Also, the non-polar chain size and concentration have an effect on the solid phases, favoring the hexagonal close packed (HCP) solid and the amorphous solid phase over the body-centered cubic (BCC) crystal. These findings help to elucidate the behavior of water solutions in the supercooled regime and indicate that the LLCP can be observed in systems without density-anomalous behavior.

Structural properties of the Jagla fluid

The structural properties of the Jagla fluid are studied by Monte Carlo (MC) simulations, numerical solutions of integral equation theories, and the (semi-analytical) rational-function approximation (RFA) method. In the latter case, the results are obtained from the assumption (supported by our MC simulations) that the Jagla potential and a potential with a hard core plus an appropriate piecewise constant function lead to practically the same cavity function. The predictions obtained for the radial distribution function, g(r), from this approach are compared against MC simulations and integral equations for the Jagla model, and also for the limiting cases of the triangle-well potential and the ramp potential, with a general good agreement. The analytical form of the RFA in Laplace space allows us to describe the asymptotic behavior of g(r) in a clean way and compare it with MC simulations for representative states with oscillatory or monotonic decay. The RFA predictions for the Fisher-Widom and Widom lines of the Jagla fluid are obtained.

Temperature of maximum density and excess properties of short-chain alcohol aqueous solutions: A simplified model simulation study

We perform an extensive computational study of binary mixtures of water and short-chain alcohols resorting to two-scale potential models to account for the singularities of hydrogen bonded liquids. Water molecules are represented by a well studied core softened potential which is known to qualitatively account for a large number of water's characteristic anomalies. Along the same lines, alcohol molecules are idealized by dimers in which the hydroxyl groups interact with each other and with water with a core softened potential as well. Interactions involving non-polar groups are all deemed purely repulsive. We find that the qualitative behavior of excess properties (excess volume, enthalpy, and constant pressure heat capacity) agrees with that found experimentally for alcohols such as t-butanol in water. Moreover, we observe that our simple solute under certain conditions acts as a "structure-maker," in the sense that the temperature of maximum density of the bulk water model increases as the solute is added, i.e., the anomalous behavior of the solvent is enhanced by the solute.

Integral equation study of soft-repulsive dimeric fluids

We study fluid structure and water-like anomalies of a system constituted by dimeric particles interacting via a purely repulsive core-softened potential by means of integral equation theories. In our model, dimers interact through a repulsive pair potential of inverse-power form with a softened repulsion strength. By employing the Ornstein-Zernike approach and the reference interaction site model (RISM) theory, we study the behavior of water-like anomalies upon progressively increasing the elongation λ of the dimers from the monomeric case ([Formula: see text]) to the tangent configuration ([Formula: see text]). For each value of the elongation we consider two different values of the interaction potential, corresponding to one and two length scales, with the aim to provide a comprehensive description of the possible fluid scenarios of this model. Our theoretical results are systematically compared with already existing or newly generated Monte Carlo data: we find that theories and simulations agree in providing the picture of a fluid exhibiting density and structural anomalies for low values of λ and for both the two values of the interaction potential. Integral equation theories give accurate predictions for pressure and radial distribution functions, whereas the temperatures where anomalies occur are underestimated. Upon increasing the elongation, the RISM theory still predicts the existence of anomalies; the latter are no longer observed in simulations, since their development is likely precluded by the onset of crystallization. We discuss our results in terms of the reliability of integral equation theories in predicting the existence of water-like anomalies in core-softened fluids.

Lattice model for water-solute mixtures

A lattice model for the study of mixtures of associating liquids is proposed. Solvent and solute are modeled by adapting the associating lattice gas (ALG) model. The nature of interaction of solute/solvent is controlled by tuning the energy interactions between the patches of ALG model. We have studied three set of parameters, resulting in, hydrophilic, inert, and hydrophobic interactions. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations were carried out, and the behavior of pure components and the excess properties of the mixtures have been studied. The pure components, water (solvent) and solute, have quite similar phase diagrams, presenting gas, low density liquid, and high density liquid phases. In the case of solute, the regions of coexistence are substantially reduced when compared with both the water and the standard ALG models. A numerical procedure has been developed in order to attain series of results at constant pressure from simulations of the lattice gas model in the grand canonical ensemble. The excess properties of the mixtures, volume and enthalpy as the function of the solute fraction, have been studied for different interaction parameters of the model. Our model is able to reproduce qualitatively well the excess volume and enthalpy for different aqueous solutions. For the hydrophilic case, we show that the model is able to reproduce the excess volume and enthalpy of mixtures of small alcohols and amines. The inert case reproduces the behavior of large alcohols such as propanol, butanol, and pentanol. For the last case (hydrophobic), the excess properties reproduce the behavior of ionic liquids in aqueous solution.

Phase behaviour of a continuous shouldered well model fluid. A grand canonical Monte Carlo study

The phase behavior of the continuous shouldered well model fluid proposed by Franzese [J. Mol. Liq. 136 (2007) 267] was examined using the Monte Carlo computer simulations in the grand canonical ensemble. The essential parts of the vapour-liquid and liquid-liquid coexistence envelopes were obtained. The Widom lines departing from coexistence envelopes were calculated using maxima of the fluctuations of the number of particles as a function of chemical potential along various isotherms. The region embracing anomalies in the properties of the model was located using the approximate criterion that involves the excess pair entropy.. The temperature of maximum density line was built by performing canonical Monte Carlo simulations. Our results are consistent with previous results from molecular dynamics constant pressure-constant temperature simulations and provide wider insight into the phase behavior of the model by using the chemical potential as the external parameter.

Anomalous diffusion and diffusion anomaly in confined Janus dumbbells

Self-assembly and dynamical properties of Janus nanoparticles have been studied by molecular dynamic simulations. The nanoparticles are modeled as dimers and they are confined between two flat parallel plates to simulate a thin film. One monomer from the dumbbells interacts by a standard Lennard-Jones potential and the other by a two-length scales shoulder potential, typically used for anomalous fluids. Here, we study the effects of removing the Brownian effects, typical from colloidal systems immersed in aqueous solution, and consider a molecular system, without the drag force and the random collisions from the Brownian motion. Self-assembly and diffusion anomaly are preserved in relation to the Brownian system. Additionally, a superdiffusive regime associated to a collective reorientation in a highly structured phase is observed. Diffusion anomaly and anomalous diffusion are explained in the two length scale framework.

Density and structural anomalies in soft-repulsive dimeric fluids

We performed a simulation study of the fluid structure of dimeric particles interacting via a core-softened potential and shed light on their anomalous behaviours upon varying both geometrical and interaction parameters.
