Phase behavior and second osmotic virial coefficient for competitive polymer solvation in mixed solvent solutions

SANS Study of PPPO in Mixed Solvents and Impact on Polymer Nanoprecipitation

We investigate the conformation of poly(2,6-diphenyl-p-phenylene oxide) (PPPO) in good and mixed solvents by small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) across its ternary phase diagram. Dichloromethane was selected as a "good" solvent and heptane as a "poor" solvent whose addition eventually induces demixing and polymer precipitation. Below the overlap concentration c*, the polymer conformation is found to be well described by the polymer-excluded volume model and above by the Ornstein-Zernike expression with a correlation length ξ which depends on the concentration and solvent/nonsolvent ratio. We quantify the decrease in polymer radius of gyration R g , increase in ξ, and effective χ parameter approaching the phase boundary. Upon flash nanoprecipitation, the characteristic particle radius (estimated by scanning electron microscopy, SEM) is found to scale with polymer concentration as well as with nonsolvent content. Significantly, the solution volume per precipitated particle remains nearly constant at all polymer concentrations. Overall, our findings correlate ternary solution structure with the fabrication of polymer nanoparticles by nonsolvent-induced phase separation and precipitation.

Lattice theory of competitive binding: Influence of van der Waals interactions on molecular binding and adsorption to a solid substrate from binary liquid mixtures

The reversible binding of molecules to surfaces is one of the most fundamental processes in condensed fluids, with obvious applications in the molecular separation of materials, chromatographic characterization, and material processing. Motivated in particular by the ubiquitous occurrence of binding processes in molecular biology and self-assembly, we have developed a lattice type theory of competitive molecular binding to solid substrates from binary mixtures of two small molecule liquids that interact between themselves by van der Waals forces in addition to exhibiting binding interactions with the solid surface. The derived theory, in contrast to previously existing theoretical frameworks, enables us to investigate the influence of van der Waals interactions on interfacial binding and selective molecular adsorption. For reference, the classic Langmuir theory of adsorption is recovered when all van der Waals interaction energies between the molecules in the bulk liquid phase and those on the surface are formally set to zero. Illustrative calculations are performed for the binding of molecules to a solid surface from pure liquids and from their binary mixtures. The properties analyzed include the surface coverage θ, the binding transition temperature T_bind, the individual surface coverages, θ_A and θ_C, and the relative surface coverages, σ_AC≡θ_A/θ_C or σ_CA≡θ_C/θ_A. The latter two quantities coincide with the degrees of adsorption directly determined from experimental adsorption measurements. The Langmuir theory is shown to apply formally under a wide range of conditions where the original enthalpies (Δh or Δh_A and Δh_C) and entropies (Δs or Δs_A and Δs_C) of the binding reactions are simply replaced by their respective "effective" counterparts (Δh_eff or Δh_A^eff and Δh_C^eff and Δs_eff or Δs_A^eff and Δs_C^eff), whose values depend on the strength of der Waals interactions and of the "bare" free energy parameters (Δh or Δh_A and Δh_C, and Δs or Δs_A and Δs_C). Numerous instances of entropy-enthalpy compensation between these effective free energy parameters follow from our calculations, confirming previous reports on this phenomenon obtained from experimental studies of molecular binding processes in solution.

The Influence of Polymer and Ion Solvation on the Conformational Properties of Flexible Polyelectrolytes

The study of the coupling between the conformational properties of a polyelectrolyte chain and the distribution of counter-ions surrounding the chain is important in developing predictive theories for more complex polymer materials, such as polyelectrolyte gels. We investigated the influence of solvent affinity to counter-ions and the polyelectrolyte backbone on the conformational properties of highly charged flexible polymer chains using molecular dynamics simulations that include both ions and an explicit solvent. We find that the solvation of the polyelectrolyte backbone can be achieved by either increasing the solvent affinity for the polyelectrolyte segments or by increasing the solvent affinity for the counter-ions. However, these two mechanisms influence the conformational properties of the polyelectrolyte chain in rather different ways, suggesting the inadequacy of polyelectrolyte solution models that treat the solvent as a continuum medium.

Mixtures of two self- and mutually-associating liquids: Phase behavior, second virial coefficients, and entropy-enthalpy compensation in the free energy of mixing

The theoretical description of the phase behavior of polymers dissolved in binary mixtures of water and other miscible solvents is greatly complicated by the self- and mutual-association of the solvent molecules. As a first step in treating these complex and widely encountered solutions, we have developed an extension of Flory-Huggins theory to describe mixtures of two self- and mutually-associating fluids comprised of small molecules. Analytic expressions are derived here for basic thermodynamic properties of these fluid mixtures, including the spinodal phase boundaries, the second osmotic virial coefficients, and the enthalpy and entropy of mixing these associating solvents. Mixtures of this kind are found to exhibit characteristic closed loop phase boundaries and entropy-enthalpy compensation for the free energy of mixing in the low temperature regime where the liquid components are miscible. As discussed by Widom et al. [Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 5, 3085 (2003)], these basic miscibility trends, quite distinct from those observed in non-associating solvents, are defining phenomenological characteristics of the "hydrophobic effect." We find that our theory of mixtures of associating fluids captures at least some of the thermodynamic features of real aqueous mixtures.

Solution properties of star polyelectrolytes having a moderate number of arms

We investigate polyelectrolyte stars having a moderate number of arms by molecular dynamics simulations of a coarse-grained model over a range of polyelectrolyte concentrations, where both the counter-ions and solvent are treated explicitly. This class of polymeric materials is found to exhibit rather distinct static and dynamic properties from linear and highly branched star polyelectrolyte solutions emphasized in past studies. Moderately branched polymers are particle-like in many of their properties, while at the same time they exhibit large fluctuations in size and shape as in the case of linear chain polymers. Correspondingly, these fluctuations suppress crystallization at high polymer concentrations, leading apparently to an amorphous rather than crystalline solid state at high polyelectrolyte concentrations. We quantify the onset of this transition by measuring the polymer size and shape fluctuations of our model star polyelectrolytes and the static and dynamic structure factor of these solutions over a wide range of polyelectrolyte concentration. Our findings for star polyelectrolytes are similar to those of polymer-grafted nanoparticles having a moderate grafting density, which is natural given the soft and highly deformable nature of both of these "particles."

Counter-ion distribution around flexible polyelectrolytes having different molecular architecture

We explore the monovalent counter-ion distribution around flexible highly-charged polyelectrolytes with different molecular architectures (linear chains, stars, and unknotted and trefoil rings) using molecular dynamics simulations that include an explicit solvent that interacts with the polyelectrolyte. In particular, we find that the molecular topology influences the fraction of counter-ions transiently associating with the polyelectrolyte on a scale of the order of the chain segments, forming a "condensed" counter-ion interfacial layer. As with the hydrogen bonding of water to proteins and other polymers, the persistence time of these interfacial "bound" counter-ions is relatively short, O(1 ps), and we characterize the fluctuations in the number of the counter-ions populating the interfacial layer. We also find that the counter-ions are distributed in a non-uniform fashion on the polyelectrolyte backbone, forming dynamical clusters whose form and average size is sensitive to molecular architecture. In addition, we find that the residual bound counter-ions, not located in either the interfacial layer or the bulk solution, form a diffuse ionic cloud around the polyelectrolyte due to the uncompensated polyelectrolyte charge along the backbone. Generally charge valence strongly influences the extent of the diffuse counter-ion cloud, but in the case of monovalent counter-ions, we find that the size of the diffuse counter-ion cloud nearly coincides with the polyelectrolyte radius of gyration, independent of molecular topology.
