Abstract
We have monitored the impacts of an increment in the alkyl chain length of the imidazolium-based tetrafluoroborate ionic liquids on the local deuteroxyl probe modes of interest. For this study, we have taken 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [EMIm][BF4], 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [BMIm][BF4], 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [OMIm][BF4], and 1-decyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate [DMIm][BF4] ionic liquid solutions with 5% HOD in H2O as the vibrational reporter of the associated ultrafast system dynamics. Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were employed to determine molecular structure and dynamic properties, while the spectral profiles were derived by applying the wavelet analysis of classical trajectories. Spatial distribution functions reveal the heterogeneity within the molecular structures of the ionic liquids (ILs) with varying alkyl chain lengths. The intense position of the spectral peak, the frequency corresponding to the shoulder peak, and the spectral linewidth of the O-D stretch distribution are not influenced by the increment in the cationic chain length. In addition, the ionic liquid (IL) [BMIm][BF4] exhibits a notable trend; the dynamic timescales are longer than the other studied systems. Therefore, we have performed the Voronoi decomposition analysis of the ionic and the polar-apolar domains, symmetrically increasing the length of alkyl chains on the IL cations. Domain analysis reveals structural microheterogeneity; the anions form discrete domains, and the ionic liquid constituting cations form continuous domains irrespective of the alkyl chain length on the imidazolium cations. Therefore, this computational ultrafast spectroscopy study aids in forming a molecular-level picture of the ionic liquid cations and anions in the liquid phase, providing a detailed interpretation of the spectral properties of the probe stretching vibrations.

Abstract
Li-bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide based ionic liquids with either butyl-trimethylammonium or N,N-dimethyl-N-(2-(propionyloxy)-ethyl)butan-1-ammonium as the anion were studied using proton and fluorine relaxometry as well as using field-gradient diffusometry to gain separate access to cation and anion dynamics in these compounds. The transport parameters obtained for these ionic liquids are compared with the estimates based on the conductivity data from literature and from the present work. The impact of cation size on correlation effects, the latter parameterized in terms of various Haven ratios, is mapped out.

Abstract
Phosphonium-based ionic liquids (ILs) paired with aprotic heterocyclic anions (AHAs) are found to react with CO2 to form both a carbamate product and a carboxyl product. The carboxyl product is formed primarily at elevated temperatures through the formation of a phosphonium ylide intermediate. The formation of the carboxyl product leads to the formation of the neutral azole, which can lead to an irreversible process if the neutral azole is sufficiently volatile. To understand how the ILs would behave in a CO2 capture process operated at elevated temperatures, it was necessary to quantify the two reaction products. CO2 was reacted with seven different AHA ILs to determine the equilibrium amounts of carbamate and carboxyl, the equilibrium constants for both reactions, and the rate of CO2 absorption by each reaction path. The reactions were tracked and quantified in situ by using ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, while NMR spectroscopy was used after equilibrium was reached to determine the extent of each reaction at multiple temperatures and pressures. It was found that both the basicity and molecular size of the anion play key roles in the formation of the phosphonium ylide. In the extreme case of [P66614][4-Triaz] only half of the reacted product was the desired carbamate at 60 °C. Although there is a significant amount of the carboxyl product formed, the carbamate is kinetically favored.

Abstract
The intermolecular dynamics in the THz frequency range of the ionic liquids n-butyl-trimethylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [N1114][NTf2], and methyl-tributylammonium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [N1444][NTf2], were investigated by a combined usage of inelastic neutron scattering (INS), Raman, and far-infrared (FIR) spectroscopies and the power spectrum calculated by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The collective dynamics of the simulated systems is also discussed by the calculation of time correlation functions of charge and mass currents that are projected onto acoustic- and optic-like motions. The INS and Raman measurements have been performed as a function of temperature in the glassy, crystalline, and liquid phases. The excess in the vibrational density of states over the expectation of the Debye theory, the so-called boson peak, is found in the INS and Raman spectra as a peak at ∼2 meV (∼16 cm-1) and also in the direct measurement of heat capacity at very low temperatures (4-20 K). This low-frequency vibration is incorporated into the curve fits of Raman, FIR, and MD data at room temperature. Fits of spectra from these different sources in the range below 100 cm-1 are consistently achieved with three components at ca. 25, 50, and 80 cm-1, but with distinct relative intensities among the different techniques. It is proposed as the collective nature of the lowest-frequency component and the anion-cation intermolecular vibration nature of the highest-frequency component. The MD results indicate that there is no clear distinction between acoustic and optic vibrations in the spectral range investigated in this work for the ionic liquids [N1114][NTf2] and [N1444][NTf2]. The analysis carried out here agrees in part, but not entirely, with other propositions in the literature, mainly from optical Kerr effect (OKE) and FIR spectroscopies, concerning the intermolecular dynamics of ionic liquids.

Abstract
Classical molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out on binary mixtures of N,N-dimethylacetamide (DMA) with hydroxide based ammonium ionic liquids (ILs), tetraethylammonium hydroxide (TEAH), tetrapropylammonium hydroxide (TPAH), tetrabutylammonium hydroxide (TBAH), at three different mole fractions of IL (X IL). The solvation of DMA molecules by ions of ILs was studied by the combined distribution function (CDF). CDFs show that anions have strong correlations with the DMA due to the hydrogen bonding. Increasing the DMA disrupts the nanosegregated domains and causes changes in correlations of cation-DMA and anion-DMA. Also, increased translational motion of ions, as well as the fluidity of IL and a significant improvement in self-diffusion coefficients, are observed with the presence of more DMA. The structural microheterogeneity was investigated using the Voronoi tessellation method. Domain analysis confirms the formation of discreet domains by anions at all the mole fractions. The results also complement the experimental observations, which suggest that two types of aggregations are possible in given mixtures: below and above 0.5 X IL. When the alkyl chain length on the cation increases, a notable decrease in ion translational motion was observed in the IL rich region. In the concentrated IL mixture, the self-diffusion coefficient of the cation is higher than that of the corresponding anion; further addition of IL (X IL < 0.5) results in weaker interactions between DMA and anion when compared to DMA-cation. The mean collision time of each species is found to have an inverse relation with X IL. The analysis of the vibrational density of states provides the low-frequency spectral feature of the mixtures.

Abstract
The competition between Coulomb and van der Waals interactions brings forth unique dynamic features and broad applications to ionic liquids. Herein, we present a combined calorimetric, X-ray diffraction, incoherent elastic, and quasi-elastic neutron scattering study, over a wide temperature range (180-340 K), of the relaxational dynamics of the liquid, supercooled liquid, crystalline, glassy, and glacial states of two model ionic liquids: tributylmethylammonium (a good glass-former) and butyltrimethylammonium (a good crystal-former) cations and the bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide anion. In both systems, we observed two distinct relaxation processes. The Q-dependence of the respective relaxation time shows that the α-process is diffusive, while the β-process is modulated by the structure of the liquids.

Abstract
A local order-disorder transition has been disclosed in the thermophysical behavior of the ionic liquid 1-benzyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide, [Bzmim][N(CN)2], and its microscopic nature revealed by spectroscopic techniques. Differential scanning calorimetry and specific heat measurements show a thermal event of small enthalpy variation taking place in the range 250-260 K, which is not due to crystallization or melting. Molecular dynamic simulations and X-ray diffraction measurements have been used to discuss the segregation of domains in the liquid structure of [Bzmim][N(CN)2]. Raman and NMR spectroscopy measurements as a function of temperature indicate that the microscopic origin of the event observed in the calorimetric measurements comes from structural rearrangement involving the benzyl group. The results indicate that the characteristic structural heterogeneity allow for rearrangements within local domains implying the good glass-forming ability for the low viscosity ionic liquid [Bzmim][N(CN)2]. This work sheds light on our understanding of the microscopic origin behind complex thermal behavior of ionic liquids.
