Reversed interfacial fractionation of carbonate and bicarbonate evidenced by X-ray photoemission spectroscopy

Real-Space Pseudopotential Method for the Calculation of Third-Row Elements X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopic Signatures

X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) is a powerful characterization technique that unveils subtle chemical environment differences via core-electron binding energy (CEBE) analysis. We extend the development of real-space pseudopotential methods to calculating 1s, 2s, and 2p3/2 CEBEs of third-row elements (S, P, and Si) within the framework of Kohn-Sham density-functional theory (KS-DFT). The new approach systematically prevents variational collapse and simplifies core-excited orbital selection within dense energy level distributions. However, careful error cancellation analysis is required to achieve accuracy comparable to all-electron methods and experiments. Combined with real-space KS-DFT implementation, this development enables large-scale simulations with both Dirichlet boundary conditions and periodic boundary conditions.

Silica Polymerization Driving Opposite Effects of pH on Aqueous Carbonation Using Crystalline and Amorphous Calcium Silicates

The aqueous carbonation of calcium silicate (CS), a representative alkaline-earth silicate, has been widely explored in studies of carbon dioxide (CO2) mineralization. In this context, we conducted a specific comparison of the carbonation behaviors between the crystalline calcium silicate (CCS) and amorphous calcium silicate (ACS) across a pH range from 9.0 to 12.0. Interestingly, we observed opposite pH dependencies in the carbonation efficiencies (i.e., CaO conversion into CaCO3 in 1 M Na2CO3/NaHCO3 solution under ambient conditions) of CCS and ACS─the carbonation efficiency of CCS decreased with increasing the solution basicity, while that of ACS showed an inverse trend. In-depth insights were gained through in situ Raman characterizations, indicating that these differing trends appeared to originate from the polymerization/depolymerization behaviors of silicates released from minerals. More specifically, higher pH conditions seemed to favor the carbonation of minerals containing polymerized silica networks. These findings may contribute to a better understanding of the fundamental factors influencing the carbonation behaviors of alkaline earth silicates through interfacial coupled dissolution and precipitation processes. Moreover, they offer valuable insights for selecting optimal carbonation conditions for alkaline-earth silicate minerals.

Agglomeration Drives the Reversed Fractionation of Aqueous Carbonate and Bicarbonate at the Air-Water Interface

In the course of our investigations of the adsorption of ions to the air-water interface, we previously reported the surprising result that doubly charged carbonate anions exhibit a stronger surface affinity than singly charged bicarbonate anions. In contrast to monovalent, weakly hydrated anions, which generally show enhanced concentrations in the interfacial region, multivalent (and strongly hydrated) anions are expected to show a much weaker surface propensity. In the present work, we use resonantly enhanced deep-UV second-harmonic generation spectroscopy to measure the Gibbs free energy of adsorption of both carbonate (CO32-) and bicarbonate (HCO3-) anions to the air-water interface. Contrasting the predictions of classical electrostatic theory and in support of our previous findings from X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, we find that carbonate anions do indeed exhibit much stronger surface affinity than do the bicarbonate anions. Extensive computer simulations reveal that strong ion pairing of CO32- with the Na+ countercation in the interfacial region results in the formation of near-neutral agglomerate clusters, consistent with a theory of interfacial ion adsorption based on hydration free energy and capillary waves. Simulated X-ray photoelectron spectra predict a 1 eV shift in the carbonate spectra compared to that of bicarbonate, further confirming our experiments. These findings not only advance our fundamental understanding of ion adsorption chemistry but also impact important practical processes such as ocean acidification, sea-spray aerosol chemistry, and mammalian respiration physiology.

CO2 -Mediated Photocatalytic Chlorine Production Over Bismuth Oxychloride in Chloride Solution

As one of the most commonly bulky chemicals, chlorine is conventionally manufactured by electrolysis of NaCl solution in the chlor-alkali process, which requires a huge supply of electrical energy. The photocatalytic route to produce chlorine by using solar energy and NaCl solution offers a promising strategy to reduce energy consumption and bring economic benefits. Herein, it was found that the introduction of CO2 would enhance the productivity of Cl2 from 8.24 μmol⋅h-1 to 39.6 μmol⋅h-1 in NaCl solution over BiOCl. Experimental studies reveal that the CO2 species (CO3 2- ) entered into the crystal texture of BiOCl and the interlayer space between [Bi2 O2 ]2+ slabs were increased and distorted, accelerating the cycle of Cl species. Besides, the cycle of carbonate species also existed and accelerated the reaction efficiency of Cl- oxidation to Cl2 . This work provides a new feasible method of using abundant CO2 resources to accelerate the process of chlorine production via photocatalysis.

Real-Space Pseudopotential Method for the Calculation of 1s Core-Level Binding Energies

We systematically studied a real-space pesudopotential method for the calculation of 1s core–electron binding energies of second-row elements B, C, N, and O within the framework of Kohn–Sham density functional theory (KS-DFT). With Dirichlet boundary conditions, pseudopotential calculations can provide accurate core–electron binding energies for molecular systems, when compared with the results from all-electron calculations and experiments. Furthermore, we report that with one simple additional nonself-consistent calculation as a refinement step using a hybrid exchange-correlation functional, we can generally improve the accuracy of binding energy shifts, promising a strategy for improving accuracy at a much lower computational cost. The specializations in the present approach, combined with our efficient real-space KS-DFT implementation, provide key advantages for calculating accurate core–electron binding energies of large-scale systems.

Can electric fields drive chemistry for an aqueous microdroplet?

Reaction rates of common organic reactions have been reported to increase by one to six orders of magnitude in aqueous microdroplets compared to bulk solution, but the reasons for the rate acceleration are poorly understood. Using a coarse-grained electron model that describes structural organization and electron densities for water droplets without the expense of ab initio methods, we investigate the electric field distributions at the air-water interface to understand the origin of surface reactivity. We find that electric field alignments along free O-H bonds at the surface are ~16 MV/cm larger on average than that found for O-H bonds in the interior of the water droplet. Furthermore, electric field distributions can be an order of magnitude larger than the average due to non-linear coupling of intramolecular solvent polarization with intermolecular solvent modes which may contribute to even greater surface reactivity for weakening or breaking chemical bonds at the droplet surface.

Electrification of water interface

The surface charge of a water interface determines many fundamental processes in physical chemistry and interface science, and it has been intensively studied for over a hundred years. We summarize experimental methods to characterize the surface charge densities developed so far: electrokinetics, double-layer force measurements, potentiometric titration, surface-sensitive nonlinear spectroscopy, and surface-sensitive mass spectrometry. Then, we elucidate physical ion adsorption and chemical electrification as examples of electrification mechanisms. In the end, novel effects on surface electrification are discussed in detail. We believe that this clear overview of state of the art in a charged water interface will surely help the fundamental progress of physics and chemistry at interfaces in the future.

Kosmotropic Electrolyte (Na2CO3, NaF) Perturbs the Air/Water Interface through Anion Hydration Shell without Forming a Well-Defined Electric Double Layer

The ion-driven electric double layer (EDL) and the structural transformation of interfacial water are implicated in unusual reaction kinetics at the air/water interface. By combining heterodyne-detected vibrational sum frequency generation (HD-VSFG) with differential spectroscopy involving simultaneous curve fitting (DS-SCF) analysis, we retrieve electrolyte (Na₂CO₃ and NaF)-correlated OH-stretch spectra of water at the air/water interface. Vibrational mapping of the perturbed interfacial water with the hydration shell spectra (obtained by DS-SCF analysis of Raman spectra) of the corresponding anion discloses that the kosmotropic electrolytes do not form well-defined EDL at the air/water interface. Instead, the interfacial water forms a stronger hydrogen-bond with the surface-expelled anions (CO₃^2- and F^-) and becomes more inhomogeneous than the pristine air/water interface. Together, the results reveal that the perturbation of interfacial water by the kosmotropic electrolyte is a "local phenomenon" confined within the hydration shell of the surface-expelled anion.

Core level photoelectron spectroscopy of heterogeneous reactions at liquid-vapor interfaces: Current status, challenges, and prospects

Liquid-vapor interfaces, particularly those between aqueous solutions and air, drive numerous important chemical and physical processes in the atmosphere and in the environment. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is an excellent method for the investigation of these interfaces due to its surface sensitivity, elemental and chemical specificity, and the possibility to obtain information on the depth distribution of solute and solvent species in the interfacial region. In this Perspective, we review the progress that was made in this field over the past decades and discuss the challenges that need to be overcome for investigations of heterogeneous reactions at liquid-vapor interfaces under close-to-realistic environmental conditions. We close with an outlook on where some of the most exciting and promising developments might lie in this field.

Structural Stabilization of P2-type Sodium Iron Manganese Oxides by Electrochemically Inactive Mg Substitution: Insights of Redox Behavior and Voltage Decay

Layered P2-type Na_0.8 Mn_0.5 Fe_0.5 O₂ cathode material is a promising candidate for next-generation sodium-ion batteries due to the economical and environmentally benign characteristics of Mn and Fe. The poor cycling stability of the material, however, is still a problem that must be solved. To address the problem, electrochemically inactive Mg²⁺ was introduced into the structure by substituting some of the Fe ions. It was shown that Mg substitution led to a smoother voltage profile with improved cycling performance and rate capability. These observations were attributed to the suppressed structural changes during electrochemical processes. Detailed redox mechanisms, associated local structural changes, and phase transitions were investigated by X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. From the detailed analysis of electrochemical behaviors, it was also identified how the redox reactions and structural disordering occurred in the high- and low-voltage regions and how Mg substitution stabilized the structure.

Electrification at water-hydrophobe interfaces

The mechanisms leading to the electrification of water when it comes in contact with hydrophobic surfaces remains a research frontier in chemical science. A clear understanding of these mechanisms could, for instance, aid the rational design of triboelectric generators and micro- and nano-fluidic devices. Here, we investigate the origins of the excess positive charges incurred on water droplets that are dispensed from capillaries made of polypropylene, perfluorodecyltrichlorosilane-coated glass, and polytetrafluoroethylene. Results demonstrate that the magnitude and sign of electrical charges vary depending on: the hydrophobicity/hydrophilicity of the capillary; the presence/absence of a water reservoir inside the capillary; the chemical and physical properties of aqueous solutions such as pH, ionic strength, dielectric constant and dissolved CO2 content; and environmental conditions such as relative humidity. Based on these results, we deduce that common hydrophobic materials possess surface-bound negative charge. Thus, when these surfaces are submerged in water, hydrated cations form an electrical double layer. Furthermore, we demonstrate that the primary role of hydrophobicity is to facilitate water-substrate separation without leaving a significant amount of liquid behind. These results advance the fundamental understanding of water-hydrophobe interfaces and should translate into superior materials and technologies for energy transduction, electrowetting, and separation processes, among others.

The chemical reactions in electrosprays of water do not always correspond to those at the pristine air-water interface

The recent application of electrosprays to characterize the air-water interface, along with the reports on dramatically accelerated chemical reactions in aqueous electrosprays, have sparked a broad interest. Herein, we report on complementary laboratory and in silico experiments tracking the oligomerization of isoprene, an important biogenic gas, in electrosprays and isoprene-water emulsions to differentiate the contributions of interfacial effects from those of high voltages leading to charge-separation and concentration of reactants in the electrosprays. To this end, we employed electrospray ionization mass spectrometry, proton nuclear magnetic resonance, ab initio calculations and molecular dynamics simulations. We found that the oligomerization of isoprene in aqueous electrosprays involved minimally hydrated and highly reactive hydronium ions. Those conditions, however, are non-existent at pristine air-water interfaces and oil-water emulsions under normal temperature and pressure. Thus, electrosprays should be complemented with surface-specific platforms and theoretical methods to reliably investigate chemistries at the pristine air-water interface.
