Effective in-field thermal conductivity of ferrofluids

Correlating the Dipolar Interactions Induced Magneto-Viscoelasticity and Thermal Conductivity Enhancements in Nanomagnetic Fluids

The effective thermal management of electronic system holds the key to maximize their performance. The recent miniaturization trends require a cooling system with high heat flux capacity, localized cooling, and active control. Nanomagnetic fluids (NMFs) based cooling systems have the ability to meet the current demand of the cooling system for the miniaturized electronic system. However, the thermal characteristics of NMFs have a long way to go before the internal mechanisms are well understood. This review mainly focuses on the three aspects to establish a correlation between the thermal and rheological properties of the NMFs. First, the background, stability, and factors affecting the properties of the NMFs are discussed. Second, the ferrohydrodynamic equations are introduced for the NMFs to explain the rheological behavior and relaxation mechanism. Finally, different theoretical and experimental models are summarized that explain the thermal characteristics of the NMFs. Thermal characteristics of the NMFs are significantly affected by the morphology and composition of the magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) in NMFs as well as the type of carrier liquids and surface functionalization that also influences the rheological properties. Thus, understanding the correlation between the thermal characteristics of the NMFs and rheological properties helps develop cooling systems with improved performance.

Imaging-Based Optofluidic Biolaser Array Encapsulated with Dynamic Living Organisms

Optofluidic biolasers have emerged as promising tools for biomedical analysis due to their strong light-matter interactions and miniaturized size. Recent developments in optofluidic lasers have opened a new Frontier in monitoring biological processes. However, most biolasers require precise recording of the lasing spectrum at the single cavity level, which limits its application in high-throughput applications. Herein, a microdroplet laser array encapsulated with living Escherichia coli was printed on highly reflective mirrors, where laser emission images were employed to reflect the dynamic changes in living organisms. The concept of image-based lasing analysis was proposed by quantifying the integrated pixel intensity of the lasing image from whispering-gallery modes. Finally, dynamic interactions between E. coli and antibiotic drugs were compared under fluorescence and laser emission images. The amplification that occurred during laser generation enabled the quantification of tiny biological changes in the gain medium. Laser imaging presented a significant increase in integrated pixel intensity by 2 orders of magnitude. Our findings demonstrate that image-based lasing analysis is more sensitive to dynamic changes than fluorescence analysis, paving the way for high-throughput on-chip laser analysis of living organisms.

Experimental and theoretical investigations on thermal conductivity of a ferrofluid under the influence of magnetic field

The effect of the strength and orientation of magnetic field with respect to the temperature gradient on the effective thermal conductivity [Formula: see text], in a kerosene-based ferrofluid with magnetite particles is reported. A new theoretical model to explain the experimental dependence [Formula: see text], obtained for both the parallel and perpendicular orientation of the magnetic field, relative to the temperature gradient is proposed, based on the Sillars equation (which is applied for the first time to a ferrofluid in this purpose). For computing [Formula: see text], we have considered that the particle agglomerations, arranged in field-induced microstructures, have ellipsoid forms and the ratio a/b between the major axis and the minor axis of the ellipsoid increases with increasing the magnetic field strength. Using the proposed theoretical model, we established for the first time a semi-empirical relationship between the ratio, a/b and the magnetic field, H, both for parallel and perpendicular H relative to the temperature gradient, determining then the dependence on H of [Formula: see text]. The theoretical results are in agreement with the experimental measurements. The reported results are of great practical importance and show that ferrofluids may be useful for incorporation in magnetic tuneable heat transfer devices or for other potential thermal applications.
