A compact ultrahigh vacuum scanning tunneling microscope with dilution refrigeration

A novel STM for quality atomic resolution with piezoelectric motor of high compactness and simplicity

Scanning tunneling microscope (STM) is a renowned scientific tool for obtaining high-resolution atomic images of materials. Herein, we present an innovative design of the scanning unit with a compact yet powerful inertial piezoelectric motor inspired by the Spider Drive motor principle. The scanning unit mainly consists of a small 9 mm long piezoelectric tube scanner (PTS), one end of which is coaxially connected to the main sapphire body of the STM. Of particular emphasis in this design is the piezoelectric shaft (PS), constructed from piezoelectric material instead of conventional metallic or zirconium materials. The PS is a rectangular piezoelectric stack composed of two piezoelectric plates, which are elastically clamped on the inner wall of the PTS via a spring strip. The PTS and PS expand and contract independently with each other to improve the inertial force and reduce the threshold voltage. To ensure the stability of the PS and balance the stepping performance of the inertial motor, a counterweight, and a matching conical spring are fixed at the tail of the PS. This innovative design allows for the assessment of scanning unit performance by applying a driving signal, threshold voltage is 50 V at room temperature. Step sizes vary from 0.1 to 1 µm by changing the driving signal at room temperature. Furthermore, we successfully obtained atomic-resolution images of a highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) sample and low drift rates of 23.4 pm/min and 34.6 pm/min in X-Y plane and Z direction, respectively, under ambient conditions. This small, compact STM unit has the potential for the development of a rotatable STM for use in cryogen-free magnets, and superconducting magnets.

Atomic resolution imaging using a novel, compact and stiff scanning tunnelling microscope in cryogen-free superconducting magnet

We present the design and performance of a novel scanning tunnelling microscope (STM) operating in a cryogen-free superconducting magnet. Our home-built STM head is compact (51.5 mm long and 20 mm in diameter) and has a single arm that provides complete openness in the scanning area between the tip and sample. The STM head consists of two piezoelectric tubes (PTs), a piezoelectric scanning tube (PST) mounted on a well-polished zirconia shaft, and a large PT housed in a sapphire tube called the motor tube. The main body of the STM head is made of tantalum. In this design, we fixed the sapphire tube to the frame with screws so that the tube's position can be changed quickly. To analyse the stiffness of the STM head unit, we identified the lowest eigenfrequencies with 3 and 4 kHz in the bending modes, 8 kHz in a torsional mode, and 9 kHz in a longitudinal mode by finite element analysis, and also measured the low drift rates in the X-Y plane and in the Z direction. The high performance of the home-built STM was demonstrated by images of the hexagonal graphite lattice at 300 K and in a sweeping magnetic field from 0 T to 9 T. Our results confirm the high stability, vibration resistance, insensitivity to high magnetic fields and the application potential of our newly developed STM for the investigation of low-frequency systems with high static support stiffness in physics, chemistry, material and biological sciences.

Band-resolved Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon states of multiple-flux-quanta vortices in a multiband superconductor

Superconductors are of type I or II depending on whether they form an Abrikosov vortex lattice. Although bulk lead (Pb) is classified as a prototypical type-I superconductor, we show that its two-band superconductivity allows for single-flux-quantum and multiple-flux-quanta vortices in the intermediate state at millikelvin temperature. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, the winding number of individual vortices is determined from the real space wave function of its Caroli-de Gennes-Matricon bound states. This generalizes the topological index theorem put forward by Volovik for isotropic electronic states to realistic electronic structures. In addition, the bound states due to the two superconducting bands of Pb can be separately detected and the two gaps close independently inside vortices. This yields strong evidence for a low interband coupling.

Atomic imaging with a 12 T magnetic field perpendicular or parallel to the sample surface by an ultra-stable scanning tunneling microscope

We present the first nonmetallic scanning tunneling microscope (STM) featuring an ultra-stable tip-sample mechanical loop and capable of atomic-resolution imaging within a 12 T magnetic field that could be either perpendicular or parallel to the sample surface. This is also the first STM with an ultra-stable tip-sample mechanical loop but without a standalone scanner. The STM head is constructed only with two parts: an improved spider-drive motor and a zirconia tip holder. The motor performs both the coarse approach and atomic imaging. A supporting spring is set at the fixed end of the motor tube to decrease the tip-sample mechanical loop. The zirconia tip holder performs as the frame of the whole STM head. With the novel design, the STM head in three dimensions can be as small as 7.9 mm × 7.9 mm × 26.5 mm. The device's excellent performance is demonstrated by atomic-resolution images of graphite and NbSe₂ obtained at 300 K and 2 K, as well as the high-resolution dI/dV spectrums of NbSe₂ at variable temperatures. Low drift rates in the X-Y plane and Z direction further prove the imaging stability of our new STM. High-quality imaging of the Charge Density Wave (CDW) structure on a TaS₂ surface shows the STM's good application capability. Continuous atomic images obtained in magnetic fields rangs from 0 T to 12 T with the direction of the magnetic field perpendicular or parallel to the sample surface show the STM's good immunity to high magnetic fields. Our results illustrate the new STM's broad application ability in extreme conditions of low temperature and high magnetic field.

Proximity-Induced Superconductivity in Atomically Precise Nanographene on Ag/Nb(110)

Obtaining a robust superconducting state in atomically precise nanographene (NG) structures by proximity to a superconductor could foster the discovery of topological superconductivity in graphene. On-surface synthesis of such NGs has been achieved on noble metals and metal oxides; however, it is still absent on superconductors. Here, we present a synthetic method to induce superconductivity of polymeric chains and NGs adsorbed on the superconducting Nb(110) substrate covered by thin Ag films. Using atomic force microscopy at low temperature, we characterize the chemical structure of each subproduct formed on the superconducting Ag layer. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy further allows us to elucidate the electronic properties of these nanostructures, which consistently show a superconducting gap.

A Novel Atomically Resolved Scanning Tunneling Microscope Capable of Working in Cryogen-Free Superconducting Magnet

We present a novel homebuilt scanning tunneling microscope (STM) with atomic resolution integrated into a cryogen-free superconducting magnet system with a variable temperature insert. The STM head is designed as a nested structure of double piezoelectric tubes (PTs), which are connected coaxially through a sapphire frame whose top has a sample stage. A single shaft made of tantalum, with the STM tip on top, is held firmly by a spring strip inside the internal PT. The external PT drives the shaft to the tip-sample junction based on the SpiderDrive principle, and the internal PT completes the subsequent scanning and imaging work. The STM head is simple, compact, and easy to assemble. The excellent performance of the device was demonstrated by obtaining atomic-resolution images of graphite and low drift rates of 30.2 pm/min and 41.4 pm/min in the X-Y plane and Z direction, respectively, at 300K. In addition, we cooled the sample to 1.6 K and took atomic-resolution images of graphite and NbSe₂. Finally, we performed a magnetic field sweep test from 0 T to 9 T at 70 K, obtaining distinct graphite images with atomic resolution under varying magnetic fields. These experiments show our newly developed STM's high stability, vibration resistance, and immunity to high magnetic fields.

Atomic-Resolution Imaging of Micron-Sized Samples Realized by High Magnetic Field Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) can image material surfaces with atomic resolution, making it a useful tool in the areas of physics and materials. Many materials are synthesized at micron size, especially few-layer materials. Limited by their complex structure, very few STMs are capable of directly positioning and imaging a micron-sized sample with atomic resolution. Traditional STMs are designed to study the material behavior induced by temperature variation, while the physical properties induced by magnetic fields are rarely studied. In this paper, we present the design and construction of an atomic-resolution STM that can operate in a 9 T high magnetic field. More importantly, the homebuilt STM is capable of imaging micron-sized samples. The performance of the STM is demonstrated by high-quality atomic images obtained on a graphite surface, with low drift rates in the X-Y plane and Z direction. The atomic-resolution image obtained on a 32-μm graphite flake illustrates the new STM's ability of positioning and imaging micron-sized samples. Finally, we present atomic resolution images at a magnetic field range from 0 T to 9 T. The above advantages make our STM a promising tool for investigating the quantum hall effect of micron-sized layered materials.

Indirect Spin-Readout of Rare-Earth-Based Single-Molecule Magnet with Scanning Tunneling Microscopy

Rare-earth based single-molecule magnets are promising candidates for magnetic information storage including qubits as their large magnetic moments are carried by localized 4f electrons. This shielding from the environment in turn hampers a direct electronic access to the magnetic moment. Here, we present the indirect readout of the Dy moment in Bis(phthalocyaninato)dysprosium (DyPc_{2}) molecules on Au(111) using milli-Kelvin scanning tunneling microscopy. Because of an unpaired electron on the exposed Pc ligand, the molecules show a Kondo resonance that is, however, split by the ferromagnetic exchange interaction between the unpaired electron and the Dy angular momentum. Using spin-polarized scanning tunneling spectroscopy, we read out the Dy magnetic moment as a function of the applied magnetic field, exploiting the spin polarization of the exchange-split Kondo state.

A millikelvin scanning tunneling microscope in ultra-high vacuum with adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration

We present the design and performance of an ultra-high vacuum scanning tunneling microscope (STM) that uses adiabatic demagnetization of electron magnetic moments for controlling its operating temperature ranging between 30 mK and 1 K with an accuracy of up to 7 μK rms. At the same time, high magnetic fields of up to 8 T can be applied perpendicular to the sample surface. The time available for STM experiments at 50 mK is longer than 20 h, at 100 mK about 40 h. The single-shot adiabatic demagnetization refrigerator can be regenerated automatically within 7 h while keeping the STM temperature below 5 K. The whole setup is located in a vibrationally isolated, electromagnetically shielded laboratory with no mechanical pumping lines penetrating its isolation walls. The 1 K pot of the adiabatic demagnetization refrigeration cryostat can be operated silently for more than 20 days in a single-shot mode using a custom-built high-capacity cryopump. A high degree of vibrational decoupling together with the use of a specially designed minimalistic STM head provides outstanding mechanical stability, demonstrated by the tunneling current noise, STM imaging, and scanning tunneling spectroscopy measurements, all performed on an atomically clean Al(100) surface.

Removing background and estimating a unit height of atomic steps from a scanning probe microscopy image using a statistical model

We present a statistical method to remove background and estimate a unit height of atomic steps of an image obtained using a scanning probe microscope. We adopt a mixture model consisting of multiple statistical distributions to describe an image. This statistical approach provides a comprehensive way to subtract a background surface even in the presence of atomic steps as well as to evaluate terrace heights in a single framework. Moreover, it also enables us to extract further quantitative information by introducing additional prior knowledge about the image. An example of this extension is estimating a unit height of atomic steps together with the terrace heights. We demonstrate the capability of our method for a topographic image of a Cu(111) surface taken using a scanning tunneling microscope. The background subtraction corrects all terraces to be parallel to a horizontal plane, and the precision of the estimated unit height reaches the order of a picometer. An open-source implementation of our method is available on the web.

A scanning tunneling microscope capable of electron spin resonance and pump-probe spectroscopy at mK temperature and in vector magnetic field

In the last decade, detecting spin dynamics at the atomic scale has been enabled by combining techniques such as electron spin resonance (ESR) or pump-probe spectroscopy with scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). Here, we demonstrate an ultra-high vacuum STM operational at milliKelvin (mK) temperatures and in a vector magnetic field capable of both ESR and pump-probe spectroscopy. By implementing GHz compatible cabling, we achieve appreciable RF amplitudes at the junction while maintaining the mK base temperature and high energy resolution. We demonstrate the successful operation of our setup by utilizing two experimental ESR modes (frequency sweep and magnetic field sweep) on an individual TiH molecule on MgO/Ag(100) and extract the effective g-factor. We trace the ESR transitions down to MHz into an unprecedented low frequency band enabled by the mK base temperature. We also implement an all-electrical pump-probe scheme based on waveform sequencing suited for studying dynamics down to the nanoseconds range. We benchmark our system by detecting the spin relaxation time T₁ of individual Fe atoms on MgO/Ag(100) and note a field strength and orientation dependent relaxation time.

Achieving μeV tunneling resolution in an in-operando scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and magnetotransport system for quantum materials research

Research in new quantum materials requires multi-mode measurements spanning length scales, correlations of atomic-scale variables with a macroscopic function, and spectroscopic energy resolution obtainable only at millikelvin temperatures, typically in a dilution refrigerator. In this article, we describe a multi-mode instrument achieving a μeV tunneling resolution with in-operando measurement capabilities of scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, and magnetotransport inside a dilution refrigerator operating at 10 mK. We describe the system in detail including a new scanning probe microscope module design and sample and tip transport systems, along with wiring, radio-frequency filtering, and electronics. Extensive benchmarking measurements were performed using superconductor-insulator-superconductor tunnel junctions, with Josephson tunneling as a noise metering detector. After extensive testing and optimization, we have achieved less than 8 μeV instrument resolving capability for tunneling spectroscopy, which is 5-10 times better than previous instrument reports and comparable to the quantum and thermal limits set by the operating temperature at 10 mK.

A modular ultra-high vacuum millikelvin scanning tunneling microscope

We describe the design, construction, and performance of an ultra-high vacuum (UHV) scanning tunneling microscope (STM) capable of imaging at dilution-refrigerator temperatures and equipped with a vector magnet. The primary objective of our design is to achieve a high level of modularity by partitioning the STM system into a set of easily separable, interchangeable components. This naturally segregates the UHV needs of STM instrumentation from the typically non-UHV construction of a dilution refrigerator, facilitating the usage of non-UHV materials while maintaining a fully bakeable UHV chamber that houses the STM. The modular design also permits speedy removal of the microscope head from the rest of the system, allowing for repairs, modifications, and even replacement of the entire microscope head to be made at any time without warming the cryostat or compromising the vacuum. Without using cryogenic filters, we measured an electron temperature of 184 mK on a superconducting Al(100) single crystal.

Light collection from a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope using integrated mirror tips fabricated by direct laser writing

We report on a cryogenic scanning tunneling microscope (STM) designed for single molecule studies, in which the light emitted from the tunneling junction is collected by an integrated optics on the tip. Using direct laser writing, the tip and the surrounding microscopic parabolic mirror are fabricated as one piece, which is small enough to collimate the collected light directly into an optical multimode fiber fixed inside the STM. This simple and compact setup combines high collection efficiency and ease of handling while not interfering with the cryostat operation, allowing uninterrupted measurements at 1.4 K for up to 5 days with low drift.
