Light collection from a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope using integrated mirror tips fabricated by direct laser writing

Activating Electroluminescence of Charged Naphthalene Diimide Complexes Directly Adsorbed on a Metal Substrate

Electroluminescence from single molecules adsorbed on a conducting surface imposes conflicting demands for the molecule-electrode coupling. To conduct electrons, the molecular orbitals need to be hybridized with the electrodes. To emit light, they need to be decoupled from the electrodes to prevent fluorescence quenching. Here, we show that fully quenched 2,6-core-substituted naphthalene diimide derivative in a self-assembled monolayer directly deposited on a Au(111) surface can be activated with the tip of a scanning tunneling microscope to decouple the relevant frontier orbitals from the metallic substrate. In this way, individual molecules can be driven from a strongly hybridized state with quenched luminescence to a light-emitting state. The emission performance compares in terms of quantum efficiency, stability, and reproducibility to that of single molecules deposited on thin insulating layers. Quantum chemical calculations suggest that the emitted light originates from the singly charged cationic pair of the molecules.

Design and implementation of a device based on an off-axis parabolic mirror to perform luminescence experiments in a scanning tunneling microscope

We present the design, implementation, and illustrative results of a light collection/injection strategy based on an off-axis parabolic mirror collector for a low-temperature Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM). This device allows us to perform STM induced Light Emission (STM-LE) and Cathodoluminescence (STM-CL) experiments and in situ Photoluminescence (PL) and Raman spectroscopy as complementary techniques. Considering the Étendue conservation and using an off-axis parabolic mirror, it is possible to design a light collection and injection system that displays 72% of collection efficiency (considering the hemisphere above the sample surface) while maintaining high spectral resolution and minimizing signal loss. The performance of the STM is tested by atomically resolved images and scanning tunneling spectroscopy results on standard sample surfaces. The capabilities of our system are demonstrated by performing STM-LE on metallic surfaces and two-dimensional semiconducting samples, observing both plasmonic and excitonic emissions. In addition, we carried out in situ PL measurements on semiconducting monolayers and quantum dots and in situ Raman on graphite and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) samples. Additionally, STM-CL and PL were obtained on monolayer h-BN gathering luminescence spectra that are typically associated with intragap states related to carbon defects. The results show that the flexible and efficient light injection and collection device based on an off-axis parabolic mirror is a powerful tool to study several types of nanostructures with multiple spectroscopic techniques in correlation with their morphology at the atomic scale and electronic structure.

Light-Driven Charge Transport and Optical Sensing in Molecular Junctions

Probing charge and energy transport in molecular junctions (MJs) has not only enabled a fundamental understanding of quantum transport at the atomic and molecular scale, but it also holds significant promise for the development of molecular-scale electronic devices. Recent years have witnessed a rapidly growing interest in understanding light-matter interactions in illuminated MJs. These studies have profoundly deepened our knowledge of the structure–property relations of various molecular materials and paved critical pathways towards utilizing single molecules in future optoelectronics applications. In this article, we survey recent progress in investigating light-driven charge transport in MJs, including junctions composed of a single molecule and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of molecules, and new opportunities in optical sensing at the single-molecule level. We focus our attention on describing the experimental design, key phenomena, and the underlying mechanisms. Specifically, topics presented include light-assisted charge transport, photoswitch, and photoemission in MJs. Emerging Raman sensing in MJs is also discussed. Finally, outstanding challenges are explored, and future perspectives in the field are provided.

Applied surface enhanced Raman Spectroscopy in plant hormones detection, annexation of advanced technologies: A review

Plant hormones are the molecules that control the vigorous development of plants and help to cope with the stress conditions efficiently due to vital and mechanized physiochemical regulations. Biologists and analytical chemists, both endorsed the extreme problems to quantify plant hormones due to their low level existence in plants and the technological support is devastatingly required to established reliable and efficient detection methods of plant hormones. Surface Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy (SERS) technology is becoming vigorously favored and can be used to accurately and specifically identify biological and chemical molecules. Subsistence molecular properties with varying excitation wavelength require the pertinent substrate to detect SERS signals from plant hormones. Three typical mechanisms of Raman signal enhancement have been discovered, electromagnetic, chemical and Tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (TERS). Though, complex detection samples hinder in consistent and reproducible results of SERS-based technology. However, different algorithmic models applied on preprocessed data enhanced the prediction performances of Raman spectra by many folds and decreased the fluorescence value. By incorporating SERS measurements into the microfluidic platform, further highly repeatable SERS results can be obtained. This review paper tends to study the fundamental working principles, methods, applications of SERS systems and their execution in experiments of rapid determination of plant hormones as well as several ways of integrated SERS substrates. The challenges to develop an SERS-microfluidic framework with reproducible and accurate results for plant hormone detection are discussed comprehensively and highlighted the key areas for future investigation briefly.

Synthesis and Surface Behaviour of NDI Chromophores Mounted on a Tripodal Scaffold: Towards Self-Decoupled Chromophores for Single-Molecule Electroluminescence

This paper reports the efficient synthesis, absorption and emission spectra, and the electrochemical properties of a series of 2,6-disubstituted naphthalene-1,4,5,8-tetracarboxdiimide (NDI) tripodal molecules with thioacetate anchors for their surface investigations. Our studies showed that, in particular, the pyrrolidinyl group with its strong electron-donating properties enhanced the fluorescence of such core-substituted NDI chromophores and caused a significant bathochromic shift in the absorption spectrum with a correspondingly narrowed bandgap of 1.94 eV. Cyclic voltammetry showed the redox properties of NDIs to be influenced by core substituents. The strong electron-donating character of pyrrolidine substituents results in rather high HOMO and LUMO levels of -5.31 and -3.37 eV when compared with the parental unsubstituted NDI. UHV-STM measurements of a sub-monolayer of the rigid tripodal NDI chromophores spray deposited on Au(111) show that these molecules mainly tend to adsorb flat in a pairwise fashion on the surface and form unordered films. However, the STML experiments also revealed a few molecular clusters, which might consist of upright oriented molecules protruding from the molecular island and show electroluminescence photon spectra with high electroluminescence yields of up to 6×10-3 . These results demonstrate the promising potential of the NDI tripodal chromophores for the fabrication of molecular devices profiting from optical features of the molecular layer.

Boosting Light Emission from Single Hydrogen Phthalocyanine Molecules by Charging

Interest in electroluminescence of single molecules is stimulated by the prospect of possible applications in novel light emitting devices. Recent studies provide valuable insights into the mechanisms leading to single molecule electroluminescence. Concrete information on how to boost the intensity of the emitted light, however, is rare. By combining scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) and quantum chemical calculations, we show that the light emission efficiencies of an individual hydrogen-phthalocyanine molecule can be increased by a factor of ≈19 upon charging. This boost in intensity can be explained by the development of a vertical dipole moment normal to the substrate facilitating out-coupling of the local excitation to the far field. As this effect is not related to the specific nature of hydrogen-phthalocyanine, it opens up a general way to increase light emission from molecular junctions.

Atomic-Scale Dynamics Probed by Photon Correlations

Light absorption and emission have their origins in fast atomic-scale phenomena. To characterize these basic steps (e.g., in photosynthesis, luminescence, and quantum optics), it is necessary to access picosecond temporal and picometer spatial scales simultaneously. In this Perspective, we describe how state-of-the-art picosecond photon correlation spectroscopy combined with luminescence induced at the atomic scale with a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) enables such studies. We outline recent STM-induced luminescence work on single-photon emitters and the dynamics of excitons, charges, molecules, and atoms as well as several prospective experiments concerning light-matter interactions at the nanoscale. We also describe future strategies for measuring and rationalizing ultrafast phenomena at the nanoscale.

3D-Printed Scanning-Probe Microscopes with Integrated Optical Actuation and Read-Out

Scanning-probe microscopy (SPM) is the method of choice for high-resolution imaging of surfaces in science and industry. However, SPM systems are still considered as rather complex and costly scientific instruments, realized by delicate combinations of microscopic cantilevers, nanoscopic tips, and macroscopic read-out units that require high-precision alignment prior to use. This study introduces a concept of ultra-compact SPM engines that combine cantilevers, tips, and a wide variety of actuator and read-out elements into one single monolithic structure. The devices are fabricated by multiphoton laser lithography as it is a particularly flexible and accurate additive nanofabrication technique. The resulting SPM engines are operated by optical actuation and read-out without manual alignment of individual components. The viability of the concept is demonstrated in a series of experiments that range from atomic-force microscopy engines offering atomic step height resolution, their operation in fluids, and to 3D printed scanning near-field optical microscopy. The presented approach is amenable to wafer-scale mass fabrication of SPM arrays and capable to unlock a wide range of novel applications that are inaccessible by current approaches to build SPMs.
