Non-adiabatic molecular dynamics of molecules in the presence of strong light-matter interactions

Formulation of transition dipole gradients for non-adiabatic dynamics with polaritonic states

A general formulation of the strong coupling between photons confined in a cavity and molecular electronic states is developed for the state-interaction state-average spin-restricted ensemble-referenced Kohn-Sham method. The light-matter interaction is included in the Jaynes-Cummings model, which requires the derivation and implementation of the analytical derivatives of the transition dipole moments between the molecular electronic states. The developed formalism is tested in the simulations of the nonadiabatic dynamics in the polaritonic states resulting from the strong coupling between the cavity photon mode and the ground and excited states of the penta-2,4-dieniminium cation, also known as PSB3. Comparison with the field-free simulations of the excited-state decay dynamics in PSB3 reveals that the light-matter coupling can considerably alter the decay dynamics by increasing the excited state lifetime and hindering photochemically induced torsion about the C=C double bonds of PSB3. The necessity of obtaining analytical transition dipole gradients for the accurate propagation of the dynamics is underlined.

Generalized Born-Huang expansion under macroscopic quantum electrodynamics framework

Born-Huang expansion is the cornerstone for studying potential energy surfaces and non-adiabatic couplings (NACs) in molecular systems. However, the traditional approach is insufficient to describe the molecular system, which strongly interacts with quantum light. Inspired by the work by Schäfer et al., we develop the generalized Born-Huang expansion theory within a macroscopic quantum electrodynamics (QED) framework. The theory we present allows us to describe electromagnetic vacuum fluctuations in dielectric media and incorporate the effects of dressed photons (or polaritons) into NACs. With the help of the generalized Born-Huang expansion, we clearly classify electronic nuclear NACs, polaritonic nuclear NACs, and polaritonic electronic NACs. Furthermore, to demonstrate the advantage of the macroscopic QED framework, we estimate polaritonic electronic NACs without any free parameter, such as the effective mode volume, and demonstrate the distance dependence of the polaritonic electronic NACs in a silver planar system. In addition, we take a hydrogen atom in free space as an example and derive spontaneous emission rates from photonic electronic NACs (polaritonic electronic NACs are reduced to photonic electronic NACs). We believe that this work not only provides an avenue for the theoretical exploration of NACs in a nucleus-electron-polariton coupled system but also offers a more comprehensive understanding for molecules coupled with quantum light.

Machine Learning Framework for Modeling Exciton Polaritons in Molecular Materials

A light-matter hybrid quasiparticle, called a polariton, is formed when molecules are strongly coupled to an optical cavity. Recent experiments have shown that polariton chemistry can manipulate chemical reactions. Polariton chemistry is a collective phenomenon, and its effects increase with the number of molecules in a cavity. However, simulating an ensemble of molecules in the excited state coupled to a cavity mode is theoretically and computationally challenging. Recent advances in machine learning (ML) techniques have shown promising capabilities in modeling ground-state chemical systems. This work presents a general protocol to predict excited-state properties, such as energies, transition dipoles, and nonadiabatic coupling vectors with the hierarchically interacting particle neural network. ML predictions are then applied to compute the potential energy surfaces and electronic spectra of a prototype azomethane molecule in the collective coupling scenario. These computational tools provide a much-needed framework to model and understand many molecules' emerging excited-state polariton chemistry.

Simulating the Excited-State Dynamics of Polaritons with Ab Initio Multiple Spawning

Over the past decade, there has been a growth of interest in polaritonic chemistry, where the formation of hybrid light-matter states (polaritons) can alter the course of photochemical reactions. These hybrid states are created by strong coupling between molecules and photons in resonant optical cavities and can even occur in the absence of light when the molecule is strongly coupled with the electromagnetic fluctuations of the vacuum field. We present a first-principles model to simulate nonadiabatic dynamics of such polaritonic states inside optical cavities by leveraging graphical processing units (GPUs). Our first implementation of this model is specialized for a single molecule coupled to a single-photon mode confined inside the optical cavity but with any number of excited states computed using complete active space configuration interaction (CASCI) and a Jaynes-Cummings-type Hamiltonian. Using this model, we have simulated the excited-state dynamics of a single salicylideneaniline (SA) molecule strongly coupled to a cavity photon with the ab initio multiple spawning (AIMS) method. We demonstrate how the branching ratios of the photodeactivation pathways for this molecule can be manipulated by coupling to the cavity. We also show how one can stop the photoreaction from happening inside of an optical cavity. Finally, we also investigate cavity-based control of the ordering of two excited states (one optically bright and the other optically dark) inside a cavity for a set of molecules, where the dark and bright states are close in energy.

Theory and modeling of light-matter interactions in chemistry: current and future

Light-matter interaction not only plays an instrumental role in characterizing materials' properties via various spectroscopic techniques but also provides a general strategy to manipulate material properties via the design of novel nanostructures. This perspective summarizes recent theoretical advances in modeling light-matter interactions in chemistry, mainly focusing on plasmon and polariton chemistry. The former utilizes the highly localized photon, plasmonic hot electrons, and local heat to drive chemical reactions. In contrast, polariton chemistry modifies the potential energy curvatures of bare electronic systems, and hence their chemistry, via forming light-matter hybrid states, so-called polaritons. The perspective starts with the basic background of light-matter interactions, molecular quantum electrodynamics theory, and the challenges of modeling light-matter interactions in chemistry. Then, the recent advances in modeling plasmon and polariton chemistry are described, and future directions toward multiscale simulations of light-matter interaction-mediated chemistry are discussed.

Theoretical Advances in Polariton Chemistry and Molecular Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

When molecules are coupled to an optical cavity, new light-matter hybrid states, so-called polaritons, are formed due to quantum light-matter interactions. With the experimental demonstrations of modifying chemical reactivities by forming polaritons under strong light-matter interactions, theorists have been encouraged to develop new methods to simulate these systems and discover new strategies to tune and control reactions. This review summarizes some of these exciting theoretical advances in polariton chemistry, in methods ranging from the fundamental framework to computational techniques and applications spanning from photochemistry to vibrational strong coupling. Even though the theory of quantum light-matter interactions goes back to the midtwentieth century, the gaps in the knowledge of molecular quantum electrodynamics (QED) have only recently been filled. We review recent advances made in resolving gauge ambiguities, the correct form of different QED Hamiltonians under different gauges, and their connections to various quantum optics models. Then, we review recently developed ab initio QED approaches which can accurately describe polariton states in a realistic molecule-cavity hybrid system. We then discuss applications using these method advancements. We review advancements in polariton photochemistry where the cavity is made resonant to electronic transitions to control molecular nonadiabatic excited state dynamics and enable new photochemical reactivities. When the cavity resonance is tuned to the molecular vibrations instead, ground-state chemical reaction modifications have been demonstrated experimentally, though its mechanistic principle remains unclear. We present some recent theoretical progress in resolving this mystery. Finally, we review the recent advances in understanding the collective coupling regime between light and matter, where many molecules can collectively couple to a single cavity mode or many cavity modes. We also lay out the current challenges in theory to explain the observed experimental results. We hope that this review will serve as a useful document for anyone who wants to become familiar with the context of polariton chemistry and molecular cavity QED and thus significantly benefit the entire community.

Ab Initio Molecular Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics Simulations Using Machine Learning Models

We present a mixed quantum-classical simulation of polariton dynamics for molecule-cavity hybrid systems. In particular, we treat the coupled electronic-photonic degrees of freedom (DOFs) as the quantum subsystem and the nuclear DOFs as the classical subsystem and use the trajectory surface hopping approach to simulate non-adiabatic dynamics among the polariton states due to the coupled motion of nuclei. We use the accurate nuclear gradient expression derived from the Pauli-Fierz quantum electrodynamics Hamiltonian without making further approximations. The energies, gradients, and derivative couplings of the molecular systems are obtained from the on-the-fly simulations at the level of complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF), which are used to compute the polariton energies and nuclear gradients. The derivatives of dipoles are also necessary ingredients in the polariton nuclear gradient expression but are often not readily available in electronic structure methods. To address this challenge, we use a machine learning model with the Kernel ridge regression method to construct the dipoles and further obtain their derivatives, at the same level as the CASSCF theory. The cavity loss process is modeled with the Lindblad jump superoperator on the reduced density of the electronic-photonic quantum subsystem. We investigate the azomethane molecule and its photoinduced isomerization dynamics inside the cavity. Our results show the accuracy of the machine-learned dipoles and their usage in simulating polariton dynamics. Our polariton dynamics results also demonstrate the isomerization reaction of azomethane can be effectively tuned by coupling to an optical cavity and by changing the light-matter coupling strength and the cavity loss rate.

Nuclear Gradient Expressions for Molecular Cavity Quantum ElectrodynamicsSimulations using Mixed Quantum-Classical Methods

We derive a rigorous nuclear gradient for a molecule-cavity hybrid system using the Quantum Electrodynamics Hamiltonian. We treat the electronic-photonic DOFs as the quantum subsystem, and the nuclei as the classical subsystem. Using the adiabatic basis for the electronic DOF and the Fock basis for the photonic DOF, and requiring the total energy conservation of this mixed quantum-classical system, we derived the rigorous nuclear gradient for the molecule-cavity hybrid system, which is naturally connected to the approximate gradient under the Jaynes-Cummings approximation. The nuclear gradient expression can be readily used in any mixed quantum-classical simulations and will allow one to perform the non-adiabatic on-the-fly simulation of polariton quantum dynamics. The theoretical developments in this work could significantly benefit the polariton quantum dynamics community with a rigorous nuclear gradient of the molecule-cavity hybrid system and have a broad impact on the future non-adiabatic simulations of polariton quantum dynamics.

Nonadiabatic Molecular Dynamics with Extended Density Functional Tight-Binding: Application to Nanocrystals and Periodic Solids

In this work, we report a new methodology for nonadiabatic molecular dynamics calculations within the extended tight-binding (xTB) framework. We demonstrate the applicability of the developed approach to finite and periodic systems with thousands of atoms by modeling "hot" electron relaxation dynamics in silicon nanocrystals and electron-hole recombination in both a graphitic carbon nitride monolayer and a titanium-based metal-organic framework (MOF). This work reports the nonadiabatic dynamic simulations in the largest Si nanocrystals studied so far by the xTB framework, with diameters up to 3.5 nm. For silicon nanocrystals, we find a non-monotonic dependence of "hot" electron relaxation rates on the nanocrystal size, in agreement with available experimental reports. We rationalize this relationship by a combination of decreasing nonadiabatic couplings related to system size and the increase of available coherent transfer pathways in systems with higher densities of states. We emphasize the importance of proper treatment of coherences for obtaining such non-monotonic dependences. We characterize the electron-hole recombination dynamics in the graphitic carbon nitride monolayer and the Ti-containing MOF. We demonstrate the importance of spin-adaptation and proper sampling of surface hopping trajectories in modeling such processes. We also assess several trajectory surface hopping schemes and highlight their distinct qualitative behavior in modeling the excited-state dynamics in superexchange-like models depending on how they handle coherences between nearly parallel states.

Optical Cavity Manipulation and Nonlinear UV Molecular Spectroscopy of Conical Intersections in Pyrazine

Optical cavities provide a versatile platform for manipulating the excited-state dynamics of molecules via strong light-matter coupling. We employ optical absorption and two-multidimensional electronic spectroscopy simulations to investigate the effect of optical cavity coupling in the nonadiabatic dynamics of photoexcited pyrazine. We observe the emergence of a novel polaritonic conical intersection (PCI) between the electronic dark state and photonic surfaces as the cavity frequency is tuned. The PCI could significantly change the nonadiabatic dynamics of pyrazine by doubling the decay rate constant of the S₂ state population. Moreover, the absorption spectrum and excited-state dynamics could be systematically manipulated by tuning the strong light-matter interaction, e.g., the cavity frequency and cavity coupling strength. We propose that a tunable optical cavity-molecule system may provide promising approaches for manipulating the photophysical properties of molecules.

Cavity quantum-electrodynamical time-dependent density functional theory within Gaussian atomic basis. II. Analytic energy gradient

Following the formulation of cavity quantum-electrodynamical time-dependent density functional theory (cQED-TDDFT) models [Flick et al., ACS Photonics 6, 2757–2778 (2019) and Yang et al., J. Chem. Phys. 155, 064107 (2021)], here, we report the derivation and implementation of the analytic energy gradient for polaritonic states of a single photochrome within the cQED-TDDFT models. Such gradient evaluation is also applicable to a complex of explicitly specified photochromes or, with proper scaling, a set of parallel-oriented, identical-geometry, and non-interacting molecules in the microcavity.

Role of Cavity Losses on Nonadiabatic Couplings and Dynamics in Polaritonic Chemistry

We present a non-Hermitian formulation of the polaritonic structure of azobenzene strongly coupled to a photonic mode that explicitly accounts for the fleeting nature of the photon-molecule interaction. This formalism reveals that the polaritonic nonadiabatic couplings that facilitate cis-trans isomerization can be dramatically modified by photonic dissipation. We perform Fewest-Switches Surface Hopping dynamics on the surfaces that derive from our non-Hermitian formalism and find that the polaritonic isomerization yields are strongly suppressed for moderate dissipation rates and that cavity-free isomerization dynamics are recovered under large dissipation rates. These findings highlight the important role that the finite lifetime of photonic degrees of freedom play in polaritonic chemistry.

Polarized Fock States and the Dynamical Casimir Effect in Molecular Cavity Quantum Electrodynamics

We present a new theoretical framework, polarized Fock states (PFSs), to describe the coupled molecule-cavity hybrid system in quantum electrodynamics. Through the quantum light-matter interactions under the dipole Gauge, the molecular permanent dipoles polarize the photon field by displacing the photonic coordinate. Hence, it is convenient to use these shifted Fock states (termed the PFSs) to describe light-matter interactions under the strong coupling regimes. These PFSs are nonorthogonal to each other and are light-matter entangled states. They allow an intuitive understanding of several phenomena that go beyond the prediction of the quantum Rabi model, while also offering numerical convenience to converge the results with much fewer states. With this powerful new theoretical framework, we explain how molecular permanent dipoles lead to the generation of multiple photons from a single electronic excitation (down-conversion), effectively achieving the dynamical Casimir effect through the nuclear vibration instead of cavity mirror oscillations.

Light-Matter Hybrid-Orbital-Based First-Principles Methods: The Influence of Polariton Statistics

A detailed understanding of strong matter–photon interactions requires first-principle methods that can solve the fundamental Pauli–Fierz Hamiltonian of nonrelativistic quantum electrodynamics efficiently. A possible way to extend well-established electronic-structure methods to this situation is to embed the Pauli–Fierz Hamiltonian in a higher-dimensional light–matter hybrid auxiliary configuration space. In this work we show the importance of the resulting hybrid Fermi–Bose statistics of the polaritons, which are the new fundamental particles of the “photon-dressed” Pauli–Fierz Hamiltonian for systems in cavities. We show that violations of these statistics can lead to unphysical results. We present an efficient way to ensure the correct statistics by enforcing representability conditions on the dressed one-body reduced density matrix. We further present a general prescription how to extend a given first-principles approach to polaritons and as an example introduce polaritonic Hartree–Fock theory. While being a single-reference method in polariton space, polaritonic Hartree–Fock is a multireference method in the electronic space, i.e., it describes electronic correlations. We also discuss possible applications to polaritonic QEDFT. We apply this theory to a lattice model and find that, the more delocalized the bound-state wave function of the particles is, the stronger it reacts to photons. The main reason is that within a small energy range, many states with different electronic configurations are available as opposed to a strongly bound (and hence energetically separated) ground-state wave function. This indicates that under certain conditions coupling to the quantum vacuum of a cavity can indeed modify ground state properties.

Photochemistry in the strong coupling regime: A trajectory surface hopping scheme

The strong coupling regime between confined light and organic molecules turned out to be promising in modifying both the ground state and the excited states properties. Under this peculiar condition, the electronic states of the molecule are mixed with the quantum states of light. The dynamical processes occurring on such hybrid states undergo several modifications accordingly. Hence, the dynamical description of chemical reactivity in polaritonic systems needs to explicitly take into account the photon degrees of freedom and nonadiabatic events. With the aim of describing photochemical polaritonic processes, in the present work, we extend the direct trajectory surface hopping scheme to investigate photochemistry under strong coupling between light and matter.

Cooperative Conical Intersection Dynamics of Two Pyrazine Molecules in an Optical Cavity

Hybrid light-matter states in optical cavities, known as polaritons, offer a novel means of manipulating and controlling photochemical processes. We investigate the cooperative cavity photochemistry of two pyrazine molecules undergoing conical intersection dynamics and interacting with a single cavity photon mode by exact quantum dynamics. When the cavity mode is coupled to the electronic transition between the ground and excited states, we find an enhanced polaritonic splitting and collective dark states. These features dominate the cooperative polariton dynamics and can be observed in the transient absorption spectrum.
