Structural reversibility of Cu doped NU-1000 MOFs under hydrogenation conditions

Enhancing CO2 Hydrogenation Using a Heterogeneous Bimetal NiAl-Deposited Metal-Organic Framework NU-1000: Insights from First-Principles Calculations

The hydrogenation of CO2 to high-value-added liquid fuels is crucial for greenhouse gas emission reduction and optimal utilization of carbon resources. Developing supported heterogeneous catalysts is a key strategy in this context, as they offer well-defined active sites for in-depth mechanistic studies and improved catalyst design. Here, we conducted extensive first-principles calculations to systematically explore the reaction mechanisms for CO2 hydrogenation on a heterogeneous bimetal NiAl-deposited metal-organic framework (MOF) NU-1000 and its catalytic performance as atomically dispersed catalysts for CO2 hydrogenation to formic acid (HCOOH), formaldehyde (H2CO), and methanol (CH3OH). The present results reveal that the presence of the NiAl-oxo cluster deposited on NU-1000 efficiently activates H2, and the facile heterolysis of H2 on Ni and adjacent O sites serves as a precursor to the hydrogenation of CO2 into various C1 products HCOOH, H2CO, and CH3OH. Generally, H2 activation is the rate-determining step in the entire CO2 hydrogenation process, the corresponding relatively low free energy barriers range from 14.5 to 15.9 kcal/mol, and the desorption of products on NiAl-deposited NU-1000 is relatively facile. Although the Al atom does not directly participate in the reaction, its presence provides exposed oxygen sites that facilitate the heterolytic cleavage of H2 and the hydrogenation of C1 intermediates, which plays an important role in enhancing the catalytic activity of the Ni site. The present study demonstrates that the catalytic performance of NU-1000 can be finely tuned by depositing heterometal-oxo clusters, and the porous MOF should be an attractive platform for the construction of atomically dispersed catalysts.

High-Throughput Experimentation, Theoretical Modeling, and Human Intuition: Lessons Learned in Metal-Organic-Framework-Supported Catalyst Design

We have screened an array of 23 metals deposited onto the metal-organic framework (MOF) NU-1000 for propyne dimerization to hexadienes. By a first-of-its-kind study utilizing data-driven algorithms and high-throughput experimentation (HTE) in MOF catalysis, yields on Cu-deposited NU-1000 were improved from 0.4 to 24.4%. Characterization of the best-performing catalysts reveal conversion to hexadiene to be due to the formation of large Cu nanoparticles, which is further supported by reaction mechanisms calculated with density functional theory (DFT). Our results demonstrate both the strengths and weaknesses of the HTE approach. As a strength, HTE excels at being able to find interesting and novel catalytic activity; any a priori theoretical approach would be hard-pressed to find success, as high-performing catalysts required highly specific operating conditions difficult to model theoretically, and initial simple single-atom models of the active site did not prove representative of the nanoparticle catalysts responsible for conversion to hexadiene. As a weakness, our results show how the HTE approach must be designed and monitored carefully to find success; in our initial campaign, only minor catalytic performances (up to 4.2% yield) were achieved, which were only improved following a complete overhaul of our HTE approach and questioning our initial assumptions.

Computational and Experimental Characterization of the Ligand Environment of a Ni-Oxo Catalyst Supported in the Metal-Organic Framework NU-1000

Heterogeneous catalysts exhibit significant changes in composition due to the influence of operating conditions, and these compositional changes can have dramatic effects on catalytic performance. For traditional bulk metal heterogeneous catalysts, relationships between composition and catalytic operating conditions are well documented. However, the influence of operating conditions on the compositions of single-site heterogeneous catalysts remains largely unresolved. To address this, we report a combined computational and experimental characterization of a Ni oxo catalyst under catalytic hydrogenation conditions. Specifically, pair distribution function (PDF) analysis is combined with ab initio thermodynamic modeling to investigate ligand environments present on a Ni oxo cluster supported in the metal-organic framework NU-1000. Comparisons of the experimentally observed and simulated Ni-O coordination numbers and Ni-O, Ni···Ni, and Ni···Zr distances provide insight into the Ni ligand environment under H₂ (g). These comparisons suggest significant OH and H₂O content and, further, that different Ni ions within the cluster and/or NU-1000 structure may comprise subtly different numbers of these ligands. Further, the observation of significant H₂O content under H₂ (g) suggests that the NU-1000 support supplies H₂O to the cluster. Examples of ligand environments that could lead to the observed PDFs are provided. The combination of simulations and experiments provides new insights into the ligand environment for Ni-NU-1000 catalysts that will be useful for understanding the ligand environments of other single-site Ni catalysts as well.

Defined metal atom aggregates precisely incorporated into metal-organic frameworks

Nanosized metal aggregates (MAs), including metal nanoparticles (NPs) and nanoclusters (NCs), are often the active species in numerous applications. In order to maintain the active form of MAs in "use", they need to be anchored and stabilised, preventing agglomeration. In this context, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), which exhibit a unique combination of properties, are of particular interest as a tunable and porous matrix to host MAs. A high degree of control in the synthesis towards atom-efficient and application-oriented MA@MOF composites is required to derive specific structure-property relationships and in turn to enable design of functions on the molecular level. Due to the versatility of MA@MOF (derived) materials, their applications are not limited to the obvious field of catalysis, but increasingly include 'out of the box' applications, for example medical diagnostics and theranostics, as well as specialised (bio-)sensoring techniques. This review focuses on recent advances in the controlled synthesis of MA@MOF materials en route to atom-precise MAs. The main synthetic strategies, namely 'ship-in-bottle', 'bottle-around-ship', and approaches to achieve novel hierarchical MA@MOF structures are highlighted and discussed while identifying their potential as well as their limitations. Hereby, an overview of standard characterisation methods that enable a systematic analysis procedure and state-of-art techniques that localise MA within MOF cavities are provided. While the perspectives of MA@MOF materials in general have been reviewed various times in the recent past, few atom-precise MAs inside MOFs have been reported so far, opening opportunities for future investigation.

Mechanism of Catalytic CO2 Hydrogenation to Methane and Methanol Using a Bimetallic Cu3Pd Cluster at a Zirconia Support

For very small nanocluster-based catalysts, the exploration of the influence of the particle size, composition, and support offers precisely variable parameters in a wide material search space to control catalysts' performance. We present the mechanism of the CO₂ methanation reaction on the oxidized bimetallic Cu₃Pd tetramer (Cu₃PdO₂) supported on a zirconia model support represented by Zr₁₂O₂₄ based on the energy profile obtained from density functional theory calculations on the reaction of CO₂ and H₂. In order to determine the role of the Pd atom, the performance of Cu₃PdO₂ with monometallic Cu₄O₂ at the same support has been compared. Parallel to methane formation, the alternative path of methanol formation at this catalyst has also been investigated. The results show that the exchange of a single atom in Cu₄ with a single Pd atom improves catalyst/s performance via lowering the barriers associated with hydrogen dissociation steps that occur on the Pd atom. The above-mentioned results suggest that the doping strategy at the level of single atoms can offer a precise control knob for designing new catalysts with desired performance.

Engineering Dendrimer-Templated, Metal-Organic Framework-Confined Zero-Valent, Transition-Metal Catalysts

We describe and experimentally illustrate a strategy for synthesizing reactant-accessible, supported arrays of well-confined, sub-nanometer to 2 nm, metal(0) clusters and particles-here, copper, palladium, and platinum. The synthesis entails (a) solution-phase binding of metal ions by a generation-2 poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) dendrimer, (b) electrostatic uptake of metalated, solution-dissolved, and positively charged dendrimers by the negatively charged pores of a zirconium-based metal-organic framework (MOF), NU-1000, and (c) chemical reduction of the incorporated metal ions. The pH of the unbuffered solution is known to control the overall charges of both the dendrimer guests and the hierarchically porous MOF. The combined results of electron microscopy, X-ray spectroscopy, and other measurements indicate the formation and microscopically uniform spatial distributions of zero-valent, monometallic Cu, Pd, and Pt species, with sizes depending strongly on the conditions and methods used for reduction of incorporated metal ions. Access to sub-nanometer clusters is ascribed to the stabilization effects imposed by the two templates (i.e., NU-1000 and dendrimer), which significantly limit the extent to which the metal atoms aggregate; as the thermal input increases, the dendrimer template gradually decomposes, allowing a further aggregation of metal clusters inside the hexagonal mesoporous channel of the MOF template, which ultimately self-limits at 3 nm (i.e., the mesopore width of NU-1000). Using CO oxidation and n-hexene hydrogenation as model reactions in the gas and condensed phases, we show that the dual-templated metal species can act as stable, efficient heterogeneous catalysts.

Pyrene-based metal organic frameworks: from synthesis to applications

Pyrene is one of the most widely investigated aromatic hydrocarbons given to its unique optical and electronic properties. Hence, pyrene-based ligands have been attractive for the synthesis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) in the last few years. In this review, we will focus on the most important characteristics of pyrene, in addition to the development and synthesis of pyrene-based molecules as bridging ligands to be used in MOF structures. We will summarize the synthesis attempts, as well as the post-synthetic modifications of pyrene-based MOFs by the incorporation of metals or ligands in the structure. The discussion of promising results of such MOFs in several applications; including luminescence, photocatalysis, adsorption and separation, heterogeneous catalysis, electrochemical applications and bio-medical applications will be highlighted. Finally, some insights and future prospects will be given based on the studies discussed in the review. This review will pave the way for the researchers in the field for the design and development of novel pyrene-based structures and their utilization for different applications.
