Cortical chimera states predict epileptic seizures

Coupling dynamics of locally active memristor based neurons

Brain-like dynamics require third-order or higher-order complexity. In order to investigate the coupling neuromorphic behaviors of identical third-order memristive neurons, this paper begins with the aim of exploring two identical neuron based dynamics under distinct operating regimes and coupling strengths. Without coupling, the single neuron can exhibit resting states, periodic spikes, or chaos depending on the bias condition. The uncoupled resting neurons can be activated by resistive coupling, inducing inhomogeneous resting states (static Smale paradox) and inhomogeneous spikes (dynamic Smale paradox) due to the edge of chaos regime. Considering the single neuron at the periodic spikes or chaotic states, the coupled neurons can mimic shocking oscillation death, non-periodic asynchronization, and periodic synchronization via the Hopf bifurcation theory. From the above analyses, an artificial ring neural network is constructed using 100 memristive neurons and resistive synapses to further study the coupled mechanism, generating exotic spatiotemporal patterns such as chimera death, amplitude chimera, solitary states, and asynchronization because of symmetry breaking. This sheds new light on exploring exotic spatiotemporal patterns of networks based on memristive neurons from the perspective of the nonlinear circuit theory.

Impact of pulse exposure on chimera state in ensemble of FitzHugh-Nagumo systems

In this article, we consider the influence of a periodic sequence of Gaussian pulses on a chimera state in a ring of coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo systems. We found that on the way to complete spatial synchronization, one can observe a number of variations of chimera states that are not typical for the parameter range under consideration. For example, the following modes were found: breathing chimera, chimera with intermittency in the incoherent part, traveling chimera with strong intermittency, and others. For comparison, here we also consider the impact of a harmonic influence on the same chimera, and to preserve the generality of the conclusions, we compare the regimes caused by both a purely positive harmonic influence and a positive-negative one.

Decoding imagined speech with delay differential analysis

Speech decoding from non-invasive EEG signals can achieve relatively high accuracy (70-80%) for strictly delimited classification tasks, but for more complex tasks non-invasive speech decoding typically yields a 20-50% classification accuracy. However, decoder generalization, or how well algorithms perform objectively across datasets, is complicated by the small size and heterogeneity of existing EEG datasets. Furthermore, the limited availability of open access code hampers a comparison between methods. This study explores the application of a novel non-linear method for signal processing, delay differential analysis (DDA), to speech decoding. We provide a systematic evaluation of its performance on two public imagined speech decoding datasets relative to all publicly available deep learning methods. The results support DDA as a compelling alternative or complementary approach to deep learning methods for speech decoding. DDA is a fast and efficient time-domain open-source method that fits data using only few strong features and does not require extensive preprocessing.

Controlling spatiotemporal dynamics of neural networks by Lévy noise

We explore numerically how additive Lévy noise influences the spatiotemporal dynamics of a neural network of nonlocally coupled FitzHugh-Nagumo oscillators. Without noise, the network can exhibit various partial or cluster synchronization patterns, such as chimera and solitary states, which can also coexist in the network for certain values of the control parameters. Our studies show that these structures demonstrate different responses to additive Lévy noise and, thus, the dynamics of the neural network can be effectively controlled by varying the scale parameter and the stability index of Lévy noise. Specifically, introducing Lévy noise in the multistability mode can increase the probability of observing chimera states while suppressing solitary states. Nonetheless, decreasing the stability parameter enables one to diminish the noise effect on chimera states and amplify it on solitary states.

Network-motif delay differential analysis of brain activity during seizures

Delay Differential Analysis (DDA) is a nonlinear method for analyzing time series based on principles from nonlinear dynamical systems. DDA is extended here to incorporate network aspects to improve the dynamical characterization of complex systems. To demonstrate its effectiveness, DDA with network capabilities was first applied to the well-known Rössler system under different parameter regimes and noise conditions. Network-motif DDA, based on cortical regions, was then applied to invasive intracranial electroencephalographic data from drug-resistant epilepsy patients undergoing presurgical monitoring. The directional network motifs between brain areas that emerge from this analysis change dramatically before, during, and after seizures. Neural systems provide a rich source of complex data, arising from varying internal states generated by network interactions.

Chimera state in a feed-forward neuronal network

Feed-forward effect gives rise to synchronization in neuron firing in deep layers of multiple neuronal network. But complete synchronization means the loss of encoding ability. In order to avoid the contradiction, we ask whether partial synchronization (coexistence of disordered and synchronized neuron firing emerges, also called chimera state) as a compromise strategy can achieve in the feed-forward multiple-layer network. The answer is YES. In order to manifest our argument, we design a multi-layer neuronal network in which neurons in every layer are arranged in a ring topology and neuron firing propagates within (intra-) and across (inter-) the multiply layers. Emergence of chimera state and other patterns highly depends on initial condition of neuronal network and strength of feed-forward effect. Chimera state, cluster and synchronization intra- and inter- layers are displayed by sequence through layers when initial values are elaborately chosen to guarantee emergence of chimera state in the first layer. All type of patterns except chimera state propagates down toward deeper layers in different speeds varying with strength of feed-forward effect. If chimera state already exists in every layer, feed-forward effect with strong and moderate strength spoils chimera states in deep layers and they can only survive in first few layers. When the effect is small enough, chimera states will propagate down toward deeper layers. Indeed, chimera states could exist and transit to deeper layers in a regular multiple network under very strict conditions. The results help understanding better the neuron firing propagating and encoding scheme in a feed-forward neuron network.

Collective dynamics of nonlocally coupled Hindmarsh-Rose neurons modified by magnetic flux

We investigate the dynamics of nonlocally coupled Hindmarsh-Rose neurons, modified by coupling the induced magnetic flux to the membrane potential with a quadratic memristor of strength k. The nonlocal coupling consists of the interaction of each neuron with its neighbors within a fixed radius, which influence the membrane potential of the neuron with coupling intensity σ. For such local dynamics and network of interactions, we investigate how variations of k and σ affect the collective dynamics. We find that when increasing k as well as when increasing σ, coherence typically increases, except for small ranges of these parameters where the opposite behavior can occur. Besides affecting coherence, varying k also affects the pattern of bursts and spikes, namely, for large enough k, burst frequency is augmented, the number and amplitude of the spikes are reduced, and quiescent periods become longer. Results are displayed for an intermediate range of interactions with radius 1/4 of the network size, but we also varied the range of interactions, ranging from first-neighbor to all-to-all couplings, observing in all cases a qualitatively similar impact of induction.

Predicting chromosomal compartments directly from the nucleotide sequence with DNA-DDA

Three-dimensional (3D) genome architecture is characterized by multi-scale patterns and plays an essential role in gene regulation. Chromatin conformation capturing experiments have revealed many properties underlying 3D genome architecture, such as the compartmentalization of chromatin based on transcriptional states. However, they are complex, costly and time consuming, and therefore only a limited number of cell types have been examined using these techniques. Increasing effort is being directed towards deriving computational methods that can predict chromatin conformation and associated structures. Here we present DNA-delay differential analysis (DDA), a purely sequence-based method based on chaos theory to predict genome-wide A and B compartments. We show that DNA-DDA models derived from a 20 Mb sequence are sufficient to predict genome wide compartmentalization at the scale of 100 kb in four different cell types. Although this is a proof-of-concept study, our method shows promise in elucidating the mechanisms responsible for genome folding as well as modeling the impact of genetic variation on 3D genome architecture and the processes regulated thereby.

Alternating chimera states in complex networks with modular structures

Chimera, the coexistence state of synchronization and non-synchronization, widely exists in complex networks. It has a great potentially explanatory power for the unihemispheric sleep of birds and some mammals, in which the synchronizations of the hemispheres of the cerebral cortex are evolving alternately. In this study, a coupled nonlinear oscillator system with a topology of the modular complex network was constructed to simulate the left and right hemispheres of the brain. The results showed that a stable chimera, an alternating chimera, and a breathing chimera were produced when the coupling strength and connection probability of the left and right hemispheres were changed. Further, we studied the effect of noise on rich synchronous patterns and found that the alternating chimera was robust to Gaussian white noise when the strength was not very large. Finally, our study was extended to a complex network with three sub-networks, and an alternating chimera could exist in two or three sub-networks. Our research provides a deeper insight into the mechanism of brain function like unihemispheric sleep.

Unbalanced clustering and solitary states in coupled excitable systems

We discover the mechanisms of emergence and the link between two types of symmetry-broken states, the unbalanced periodic two-cluster states and solitary states, in coupled excitable systems with attractive and repulsive interactions. The prevalent solitary states in non-locally coupled arrays, whose self-organization is based on successive (order preserving) spiking of units, derive their dynamical features from the corresponding unbalanced cluster states in globally coupled networks. Apart from the states with successive spiking, we also find cluster and solitary states where the interplay of excitability and local multiscale dynamics gives rise to so-called leap-frog activity patterns with an alternating order of spiking between the units. We show that the noise affects the system dynamics by suppressing the multistability of cluster states and by inducing pattern homogenization, transforming solitary states into patterns of patched synchrony.

Bumps, chimera states, and Turing patterns in systems of coupled active rotators

Self-organized coherence-incoherence patterns, called chimera states, have first been reported in systems of Kuramoto oscillators. For coupled excitable units, similar patterns where coherent units are at rest are called bump states. Here, we study bumps in an array of active rotators coupled by nonlocal attraction and global repulsion. We demonstrate how they can emerge in a supercritical scenario from completely coherent Turing patterns: a single incoherent unit appears in a homoclinic bifurcation, undergoing subsequent transitions to quasiperiodic and chaotic behavior, which eventually transforms into extensive chaos with many incoherent units. We present different types of transitions and explain the formation of coherence-incoherence patterns according to the classical paradigm of short-range activation and long-range inhibition.

Dynamical ergodicity DDA reveals causal structure in time series

Determining synchronization, causality, and dynamical similarity in highly complex nonlinear systems like brains is challenging. Although distinct, these measures are related by the unknown deterministic structure of the underlying dynamical system. For two systems that are not independent on each other, either because they result from a common process or they are already synchronized, causality measures typically fail. Here, we introduce dynamical ergodicity to assess dynamical similarity between time series and then combine this new measure with cross-dynamical delay differential analysis to estimate causal interactions between time series. We first tested this approach on simulated data from coupled Rössler systems where ground truth was known. We then applied it to intracranial electroencephalographic data from patients with epilepsy and found distinct dynamical states that were highly predictive of epileptic seizures.

Extensions of Granger Causality Calculations on Brain Networks for Efficient and Accurate Seizure Focus Identification via iEEGs

Current epilepsy surgery planning protocol determines the seizure onset zone (SOZ) through resource-intensive, invasive monitoring of ictal events. Recently, we have reported that Granger Causality (GC) maps produced from analysis of interictal iEEG recordings have potential in revealing SOZ. In this study, we investigate GC maps’ network connectivity patterns to determine possible clinical correlation with patients’ SOZ and resection zone (RZ). While building understanding of interictal network topography and its relationship to the RZ/SOZ, we identify algorithmic tools with potential applications in epilepsy surgery planning. These graph algorithms are retrospectively tested on data from 25 patients and compared to the neurologist-determined SOZ and surgical RZ, viewed as sources of truth. Centrality algorithms yielded statistically significant RZ rank order sums for 16 of 24 patients with RZ data, representing an improvement from prior algorithms. While SOZ results remained largely the same, this study validates the applicability of graph algorithms to RZ/SOZ detection, opening the door to further exploration of iEEG datasets. Furthermore, this study offers previously inaccessible insights into the relationship between interictal brain connectivity patterns and epileptic brain networks, utilizing the overall topology of the graphs as well as data on edge weights and quantity of edges contained in GC maps.

Chimera states and frequency clustering in systems of coupled inner-ear hair cells

Coupled hair cells of the auditory and vestibular systems perform the crucial task of converting the energy of sound waves and ground-borne vibrations into ionic currents. We mechanically couple groups of living, active hair cells with artificial membranes, thus mimicking in vitro the coupled dynamical system. We identify chimera states and frequency clustering in the dynamics of these coupled nonlinear, autonomous oscillators. We find that these dynamical states can be reproduced by our numerical model with heterogeneity of the parameters. Furthermore, we find that this model is most sensitive to external signals when poised at the onset of synchronization, where chimera and cluster states are likely to form. We, therefore, propose that the partial synchronization in our experimental system is a manifestation of a system poised at the verge of synchronization with optimal sensitivity.

Chimera states in a neuronal network under the action of an electric field

The phenomenon of the chimera state symbolizes the coexistence of coherent and incoherent sections of a given population. This phenomenon identified in several physical and biological systems presents several variants, including the multichimera states and the traveling chimera state. Here, we numerically study the influence of a weak external electric field on the dynamics of a network of Hindmarsh-Rose (HR) neurons coupled locally by an electrical interaction and nonlocally by a chemical one. We first focus on the phenomena of traveling chimera states and multicluster oscillating breathers that appear in the electric field's absence. Then in the field's presence, we highlight the presence of a chimera state, a multichimera state, an alternating chimera state, and a multicluster traveling chimera.

Mechanism for Strong Chimeras

Chimera states have attracted significant attention as symmetry-broken states exhibiting the unexpected coexistence of coherence and incoherence. Despite the valuable insights gained from analyzing specific systems, an understanding of the general physical mechanism underlying the emergence of chimeras is still lacking. Here, we show that many stable chimeras arise because coherence in part of the system is sustained by incoherence in the rest of the system. This mechanism may be regarded as a deterministic analog of noise-induced synchronization and is shown to underlie the emergence of strong chimeras. These are chimera states whose coherent domain is formed by identically synchronized oscillators. Recognizing this mechanism offers a new meaning to the interpretation that chimeras are a natural link between coherence and incoherence.
