Surprisingly broad applicability of the cc-pVnZ-F12 basis set for ground and excited states

The tautomer-specific excited state dynamics of 2,6-diaminopurine using resonance-enhanced multiphoton ionization and quantum chemical calculations

2,6-Diaminopurine (2,6-dAP) is an alternative nucleobase that potentially played a role in prebiotic chemistry. We studied its excited state dynamics in the gas phase by REMPI, IR-UV hole burning, and ps pump-probe spectroscopy and performed quantum chemical calculations at the SCS-ADC(2) level of theory to interpret the experimental results. We found the 9H tautomer to have a small barrier to ultrafast relaxation via puckering of its 6-membered ring. The 7H tautomer has a larger barrier to reach a conical intersection and also has a sizable triplet yield. These results are discussed relative to other purines, for which 9H tautomerization appears to be more photostable than 7H and homosubstituted purines appear to be less photostable than heterosubstituted or singly substituted purines.

Accurate Thermochemical and Kinetic Parameters at Affordable Cost by Means of the Pisa Composite Scheme (PCS)

A new strategy for the computation at an affordable cost of geometrical structures, thermochemical parameters, and rate constants for medium-sized molecules in the gas phase is proposed. The most distinctive features of the new model are the systematic use of cc-pVnZ-F12 basis sets, the addition of MP2 core-valence correlation in geometry optimizations by a double-hybrid functional, the separate extrapolation of MP2 and post-MP2 contributions, and the inclusion of anharmonic contributions in zero-point energies and thermodynamic functions. A thorough benchmark based on a wide range of prototypical systems shows that the new scheme outperforms the most well-known model chemistries without the need for any empirical parameter. Additional tests show that the computed zero-point energies and thermal contributions can be confidently used for obtaining accurate thermochemical and kinetic parameters. Since the whole computational workflow is translated in a black-box procedure, which can be followed with standard electronic structure codes, the way is paved for the accurate yet not prohibitively expensive study of medium- to large-sized molecules also by nonspecialists.

Thermally-Activated Tunneling in the Two-Water Bridge Catalyzed Tautomerization of Phosphinylidene Compounds

Phosphinylidenes are an important class of organophosphorus compounds that can exhibit tautomerization between tricoordinated P(III) hydroxide (R¹ R² POH) and a pentacoordinated P(V) oxide (R¹ R² P(O)H) form. Herein we show, using the canonical variational transition state theory combined with multidimensional small-curvature tunneling approximation, the dominance of proton tunneling in the two-water-bridged tautomerizations of phosphinous acid and model phosphinylidenes comprising phosphosphinates, H-phosphonates, H-phosphinates and secondary phosphine oxides. Based on the studied system, the contribution of thermally-activated tunneling is predicted to speed up the semiclassical reaction rate by ca. threefold to as large as two orders of magnitude at 298.15 K in the gas phase. The large KIE and the concavity in the Arrhenius plots are further fingerprints of tunneling. The simulations also predicted that the rapid tunneling rate and short half-life span for the forward reaction, as opposed to the reverse reaction in fluorinated secondary phosphine oxides, would result in P(V) being elusive and only P(III) being isolable, which agrees with previous experiments where only P(III) was detected by IR and NMR spectroscopy. We also explored the role of solvent and predicted tunneling to be substantial.

Modulating photoswitch performance with halogen, coordinative and hydrogen bonding: a comparison of relative bond strengths

The behavior of an enediyne photoswitch is modulated with halogen bonding, coordinative bonding and hydrogen bonding. Through NMR and computational studies we demonstrate that the relative strength of the secondary bonding directly influences the rate of photoisomerization and the photostationary state.
